Dear Norwalk Community, As we welcome the fall season, I’m excited to share updates and invite you to take part in everything our Recreation and Park Services Department has planned. This season is filled with opportunities to connect, stay active, and celebrate together. Construction continues at Hermosillo Park, where the new community building is taking shape. As we look ahead to the future use of the park, we want to hear from you. Community surveys are helping us determine the types of programs, events, and activities you’d like to see offered in the new facility, as well as future uses for the outdoor, multipurpose fields. Your input will help create a space that reflects the community’s interests and needs. To take the survey or for the latest park project updates, check out the new Parks Projects Section on pages 4-5, to stay informed about the new park improvements taking place throughout Norwalk. Along with park improvements, Fall also brings many favorite traditions. The popular Halloween Parade will begin from Holifield Park and end at Sanchez Elementary, this year. Our Halloween Festivals will culminate into one exciting event at Norwalk Park, for a larger, family-friendly experience. For events that are great for little ones, make sure to stop by the Pumpkin Float at the Norwalk Aquatic Pavilion, a unique seasonal favorite that promises fun for all ages. Looking to stay active? Be sure to sign up for our youth and adult basketball leagues, offering friendly competition and opportunities to build skills and teamwork throughout the season. We’re also proud to continue our Adaptive Recreation Program for teens and adults ages 13 and older. Through engaging recreational and social activities, participants can make meaningful connections while enjoying new experiences. One seasonal highlight is the Heart Club Halloween Dance, where spooky fun and lasting memories are always on the schedule. Whether you’re joining us for a special event, participating in a league, or helping shape the future of Norwalk’s Park system, thank you for being an important part of our community. Get ready for a spooky good time at one of Norwalk’s most beloved traditions! Join us for the 41st Annual Arturo Sanchez Sr. Halloween Parade & Costume Contest. A fun, family friendly event filled with music, costumes, and community spirit. Enjoy performances from amazing marching bands across Southern California. March alongside ghosts, goblins, and ghouls in your favorite Halloween costume. No pre-registration required to participate in the costume contest! Don’t miss the annual Halloween Festival that brings the community together for a night of music, dancing, and celebration at Norwalk Park! All ages are welcome to participate in this free family event. There will be game booths, a costume parade, raffles, music, crafts, and of course, lots of candy! Food will be available to purchase. The festival provides a safe alternative to door-to-door trick-or-treating and promotes the safe celebration of Halloween.

Built in 1891, the D.D. Johnston-Hargitt House Museum is a two-story Eastlake Victorian farmhouse originally owned by Darius David Johnston, one of Norwalk’s earliest pioneers. Johnston played a significant role in shaping the community, serving as a founding organizer of the Norwalk School District and as a school board member from the late 1880s until his passing in 1917. At its peak, the surrounding property encompassed up to 200 acres of grapevines, prune orchards, avocado groves, and citrus trees. Today, the Museum is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and offers a unique window into Norwalk’s early days. The interior features family heirlooms, photographs, period furnishings, and artifacts that reflect both the JohnstonHargitt family’s legacy and the broader history of the Norwalk area. Guided tours led by the Friends of Hargitt House docents bring this history to life with stories and insights into the region’s past. Admission is free, though donations are gratefully accepted. The Museum may close during inclement weather. To schedule a group tour for ten or more, please call (562) 929-5521.

There are a variety of classes, workshops, and special events for all ages in the following categories: Li’l munchkins, tots, youth, tweens, teens and adults. If you are looking for something a little more on the cultural side, we offer Mariachi classes for youth ages 7-18. The CAC also houses the Mary Paxon Art Gallery where local and regional artists have the opportunity to exhibit their art. Please Note: The Cultural Arts Center will be closed Sept 7. EXHIBIT: RECONOCIENDO A MARTIN Y LA MORA ARTIST: ERIC MAGANA Reception: Sat., Sept. 19, 6 – 8pm Reconociendo a Martin y La Mora, a self portrait series explores the relationship and dialogue between the artists and his grandfather, Martin Barbosa. His image and Bracero history serve as a departure point by embodying his positionality on his land. The exhibit brings forward ancestral ideas and a sense of belonging. Martin also serves as one of the many inspirations to photograph and uplift living Braceros and their families,such as in, Bracero Salvador Chavez and Cuca Oceguera.

We investigate acts of visibility and erasure, examining how individuals, communities, are often marginalized. Whether through systematic violence, exploitative labor, or fading of family history, each body of work seeks to make the invisible visible. By bringing together diverse artistic responses and mediums to these intersecting issues, the exhibition resists silence and insists on visibility: asserting that what is deemed as erased has always been there, and continues to shape our sociopolitical reality.

Two half-day programs are offered for preschool age children. Creative Li’l Hands takes place at the Cultural Arts Center Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday each week, while Toddler Town is held at Sara Mendez Park with a choice of Monday, Wednesday, Friday or Tuesday and Thursday. Toddlers will get a head start for Pre-school and Kindergarten in this learning program. They will practice listening skills, sharing, and taking turns. Students will participate in many activities including art, crafts, music, and storytelling. Activities are selected to enhance the learning of shapes, colors, and the ABC’s.

NORWALK STINGRAYS YOUTH SWIM TEAM (AGES 6-18) The Norwalk Stingrays is a novice swim team designed to teach and encourage young people to participate in water sports in a competitive yet fun basis. Team members will learn the basic skills and train to compete in swim meets against other local swim teams. The team is divided into different levels for practice. Group assignment is based on the swimmer’s maturity level, commitment to training, experience and participation in swim meets. Parental support is essential to the success of the program. Children should be able to swim front crawl 50 yards continuously and have a basic knowledge of the competitive strokes at time of registration. The monthly fee is due at the beginning of each month. If applicant is serving alcohol at an event, in addition to the reservation total, the following fees also apply: – All reservations with an alcohol permit will be required to pay for two security guards at $35 an hour for each security guard. – Reservations with no alcohol and with guests exceeding 100 will be required to pay for one security guard at $35 an hour. – A deposit is also required for all reservations: $1,000 for events with alcohol and $500 for events without alcohol. Security guards are required from the start of event to end of clean up. If it is determined that Sheriff Deputies are required, a fee of $102 an hour per deputy will apply. Security Deposit Refund: Please allow five weeks following your reservation for refund to arrive by mail.
