What Do Uber and Office Products Have in Common? How could anyone think there's anything in common between Uber and Office Products? High-tech transportation versus ink, toner and paper clips! "I don't think so!", I hear you all saying. Well, hold on for a moment and think about the following. The taxi business is a big industry involving a lot of dollars. According to theNew York City Taxi & Limousine Commission Report of 2014, there is an average of 485,000 Yellow Taxi trips in New York City per day with an average fare of $13.40. That adds up to $2.4 billion per year - just for New York City Yellow Cabs. Hmmm ... you start to get to see why Uber was drawn to the paid-ride business?

10

www.rechargeasia.com

Let's assume the average cost of an Uber ride in New York City is 70% of a regulated Yellow Taxi fare, or $9.38. If 100% of rides converted from Yellow Taxis to Uber rides, the overall cost in New York City for rides would decrease from $2.4 billion to $1.7 billion - saving consumers $700 million per year. The Uber founders saw an opportunity to disintermediate the taxi cartel and its government-sponsored medallion system originally introduced in the 1930s. In 2014 a medallion (license to operate a Yellow Taxi) cost nearly $1 million and, historically, licenses have generated a 10% ROI for their owners. Of course, that ROI is incrementally earned by way of fares

154th Issue - February 2017

paid by consumers - think perhaps, overpaying! However, two to three years on, and the market price for a Medallion is down nearly 50% to $500,000. Many investors, who didn't see the Uber disruptor coming, are now "under water" by hundreds of thousands of dollars on mortgages owed on the medallions. This reduction in the value of a Medallion is directly related to the entry of Uber and other, similar rival services. Now let's switch gears to the ink and toner business where $25 billion is spenteach year in the United States. 80% of this spend ($20 billion) is on original brand (OEM) cartridges, such as those provided by Hewlett Packard, Brother, Samsung, etc. The remaining $5 billion is spent on aftermarket cartridges that may sell anywhere between 10% and 70% of the typical OEM cartridge sell price. Let's focus on the $20 billion OEM ink and toner spend for a moment. Most of these cartridges are sold through the BigBox channels such as Office Depot and Staples. These resellers typically don't promote aftermarket cartridges and, those they do, are usually at the top-end of the aftermarket pricing scale (i.e. 70% or so of the OEM price). When Uber came along, it disintermediated the Yellow Taxi service through the use of technology and the App customers installed on their smartphones. This enabled waiting times, cash, and tipping to all be eliminated. Consumers have been deserting Yellow Taxis in droves ever since. American businesses have mostly

purchased their office products from Office Depot, Staples, and other BigBox outlets, evidently not believing (or knowing) there are other viable options (resellers) for them to select from. Until now, it's been almost impossible to disintermediate the Big Box resellers. There’s really “no other place besides Office Depot and Staples to get everything you need for your office," said Scott Wagner, a partner at law firm Bilzin Sumberg and an antitrust expert. "But everything you can get there, you can get somewhere else. The taxi business is not very sexy but a disruptor still saw the opportunity, deployed technology, and turned the entire industry on its head. The office products business is also not very sexy but, besides this subjective element, has other economic similarities to the taxi model. Uber depends on thousands of independent drivers to hit the road when they choose to do so, joining the Uber Platform and connecting supply (their vehicle and driving service) to demand (paying customers wanting a ride). There are thousands of independent office products resellers, struggling to compete with the OEM marketing machine and the Big Box resellers with

their combined grip on corporate America. Uber is more convenient, a better experience, and usually, costs less than a Yellow Taxi ride. Aftermarket office supplies can offer just as good an experience as the OEM brand while saving consumers significant amounts of money. The only piece of the puzzle that's been missing is the "Office Products" equivalent of the Uber Platform that's necessary for the independent resellers to start to disintermediate the Big Box resellers. A Platform that has the potential to save consumers up to $6 billion per year. ($20 Billion x 70% = $14 billion = $6 billion saving). Joining the Platform, enabling the use of technology for ensuring transactional efficiency, logistical reliability, and a customer experience comparable to that currently provided by the Big Box resellers means the final piece of the puzzle is now available. Not only may this facilitate consumers to start enjoying up to $6 billion in annual savings but it may also transform the outlook for office supplies dealerships!

Pitney Bowes, HP and TagG Develop New IPDS Controller for IntelliJet Family of Printers Pitney Bowes (PBI), a global technology company that provides innovative products and solutions to power commerce, today announced an agreement with TagG and HP to develop a new native IPDS (Intelligent Printer Data Stream) Controller for the Pitney Bowes IntelliJet and HP PageWide Web Press printing systems to deliver higher-value communications. The new controller will allow Pitney Bowes to serve transactional print and mail clients who value native IPDS printer controllers to leverage AFP (Advanced Function Presentation) workflows. The announcement was made at Hunkeler Innovationdays 2017 in Lucerne, Switzerland. Hunkeler Innovationdays is a premier global event for production print and finishing solutions. “The IPDS controller will allow Pitney Bowes to offer an additional option for clients who desire to create higher value communications, or move to higher quality inkjet printing,” said Jason Dies, President, Pitney Bowes Document Messaging Technologies. “We’re grateful for the collaboration with our long-term partner HP and our new partner TagG, and excited to bring this new capability to market.”

3D Printing One of Five Innovative Techs 3D Printing is one of five innovative manufacturing technologies that are changing the face of the industry. Along with drones, wearables, AGVs, and handheld devices, 3D printers are pushing the boundaries of what is possible in manufacturing and are also, of course, bringing costs down. Interestingly, these technologies might come at odds with each other over time. For example, drones are now a great way to take inventory remotely. But 3D printers may very well make inventories obsolete, which means there will be one less application for drones.

12

www.rechargeasia.com

The new IPDS controller will be sold and supported by Pitney Bowes and will be available globally beginning Q3 2017. At Hunkeler Innovation days, HP announced the new HP PageWide Web Press T235 HD, bringing high quality HDNA (High Definition Nozzle Architecture) to entry-level commercial inkjet printing. It operates at a maximum duty cycle of 48 million full color impressions per month and a speed of 400 fpm (122 mpm). Pitney Bowes will sell this model as part of their IntelliJet 20 HD series for transactional print and mail operations. In 2016, HP and Pitney Bowes launched HDNA technology on PageWide Web Presses and IntelliJet Printers. HDNA doubles print resolution to an industry-leading 2400 nozzles per inch. It will also allow for faster print speed of up to 1000 feet per minute (305 meters per minute). “The upgradability of our high-volume printers is one of their key benefits,” said Dies. It allows us to constantly test new innovations and bring those innovations to our clients faster, without requiring them to absorb the lost time, expensive costs and operational disruptions of a traditional ‘fork-lift’ upgrade.”

Old Copiers Can Turn into 3D Printers Two e-waste hubs in Australia are teaching the local unemployed residents valuable technical skills through sorting and reusing electronic waste. As part of this handson work experience, it turns out that a 3D printer can be made from old copiers and other waste, except the extruder and controller. Then, other parts unavailable among the e-waste can be designed and 3D printed themselves. This is one new way of making 3D printing tech more popular.

3D Printed Pills Get New Boost

UCLA researchers have developed a special bio ink, to be used in the 3D printing of medicines in the form of pills. The ink consists of hyaluronic acid, which is a vital ingredient in our skin and connective tissues, and a photoinitiator, which solidifies the mixture on contact with light. This mixture is poured in preformed tablets and then the active ingredients of the drug are added via a nozzle. The ink can be used with Stratasys’ PolyJet 3D printing method, according to the scientists. The objective was to develop drugs that can be customized depending on a patient’s individual characteristics, making them more efficacious.

Retailers Use 3D Printing to Lure Customers

3D printers are one of the new tools that retailers are using to expand their customer base, by offering them custommade items, printed, or in some cases knitted, within an hour. Also in the tool box of the modern generation of retailers is augmented reality, which allows customers to shop online but get a feel as if they are in the shop. For brick-and-mortar shops, VR characters help turn windows into screens, offering passers by a screen experience. Robots are also among the trends: instead of shop assistants, you get robots, who are operated by people in different locations, offering customers customized service depending on their special area of knowledge.

3D Printing Helps Complex Heart Operations

Two medical teams in China recently used 3D printed models of their patients’ hearts in order to prepare for very complex surgical operations. In both cases the patients were children, one with hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy and the other with a severe case of left ventricular outflow tract obstruction. This, says Xinhua, is the first time 3D printing has been used in pediatric heart surgery in Hunan.

Stratasys Launches New 3D Printer Line

Stratasys has presented a new product line, targeting specifically designers by offering them its rapid prototyping capabilities. The F123 Series covers the whole prototyping cycle, from concept verification to design validation and final functional performance. In this, designers can use almost any CAD file, with no previous expertise in prototyping required. According to Stratasys officials, the company found that the majority of users for its rapid prototyping printers were using them for all of their use cases: over 60%. A recent survey revealed to the company that ease of use and accessibility are key for workgroups dealing with rapid prototyping. The company therefore decided to target these workgroups by offering them what they need, in a bid to encourage the wider adoption of 3D printing in product development.

3D Printing’s Bright Future in Medicines Supported by Study

Research from the University of Cambridge has concluded that 3D printers can produce very accurate pharmaceutical formulations, confirming the technology has a bright future in pharmaceuticals. The researchers used X-ray computed microtomography and teraherz pulse imaging to establish the accuracy of 3D printed pills and found that the technology could much more accurately reproduce specific structures – something critical for the right dosage of the medicine as they define the drug release characteristics and, consequently, its performance, the team wrote.

Ottawa Hospital Implements 3D Printing Program

The Ottawa Hospital has become the first to adopt a comprehensive 3D printing program aimed at helping medical professionals improve diagnostics, surgery planning and treatment, using the capabilities of the technology. 3D modeling will let surgeons plan operations in a much more detailed way, reducing the time of the operation and improving the chances of it being successful. Modeling could also reduce the need for invasive treatments and anesthetics and can generally offer better outcomes at lower costs, according to the hospital’s chief of medical imaging and chair of radiology, Dr. Frank Rybicki. The program also envisages the 3D printing of customized prosthetic limbs, at much lower prices for patients than standard prosthetics.

Researchers Develop Superstretchable 3D Printed Materials

Researchers from Israel and Singapore have developed a line of exceptionally stretchable and UV-curable resin-based materials, by mixing two types of resins. The materials are novel because usually this extent of stretchiness is achieved by combining 3D printing and traditional manufacturing methods. These, however, are entirely 3D printed, using the digital light processing method. The team, however, believe that other 3D printing methods involving vat polymerization of resins can also be successfully employed for the creation of these super-stretchy materials.

Study Finds Household 3D Printing Can be Very Economical

A study from Michigan Technological University has revealed something that may come as a surprise to those who question the viability of consumer-grade 3D printers. Researchers Joshua Pearce and Emily Petersen found that if you buy a desktop 3D printer, you can get a 100% return on the investment in six months and a 1000% return over five years. Pearce and Petersen simulated a case where a household would use a low-cost printer – their choice was Lulzbot – equipped with open-source software and hardware, and compatible with all operating systems. They also restricted the use to 26 popular household items that can easily be 3D printed, such as showerheads, binder clips for snowboards and tool holders. Then they estimated the cost savings for each item, based on its frequency of use, print time, and energy. It turned out that with a low-cost 3D printer you can save money on all of these 26 items, even if you only print one item per week. Of course, not all households need to print any of these items on a weekly basis but the study certainly raises the question of whether desktop 3D printers are really that far from becoming mainstream.

Students Build Six-Axis 3D Printer

Two students from the Zurich University of Applied Sciences have developed a 3D printer whose print bed can move along three axes, which makes it possible to print overhanging structures without the need for support. This could theoretically make the printing of complex structures involving overhangs not just easier but faster. There is a drawback, however: for lack of time and money, the authors did not develop software allowing both the printhead and the bed to move simultaneously. This means that soft curves are for the moment impossible, limiting the usefulness of the prototype machine.

Swedish Printer Maker Launches Crowdfunding for 3-in-1 3D Printer

Swedish Febtop Tech has launched a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo for a new hybrid 3D printer that doubles as laser cutter and CNC mill. The milestone set by the company, $50,000, was reached within hours. The Optimus uses fused deposition modeling for its 3D printing function and, together with the other two functions, aims to provide individual makers with the full set of tools from the beginning of an idea to a final product, rather than stopping at the prototyping stage. Given its multiple functions, the developers of the Optimus have made it from strong metal alloys to ensure strength and durability. As a 3D printer, it has a build volume of 240x300 mm and as a laser cutter it has a work area of 500x500 mm. The machine is compatible with a variety of materials, depending on the strength of the laser used.

These inflatable cartridge airbags are commonly used by many OEM manufacturers, and remanufacturers as well. They ship in 100 pcs/box, and are available in a variety of sizes and configurations. The Q-Type is very popular among remanufacturers, and it does not require heat-sealing, but rather has a fold over end cap design. To inflate airbagthe use of a special air nozzle is required to provide proper pressure. Once the bag is inflated, fold back the endcap, and insert the cartridge into the bag; then pull the endcap back over the exposed end of the cartridge. The bag (and cartridge) can then be placed into the shipping box. The end user simply opens the box, removes the airbag and cartridge, folds back the endcap and removes the cartridge from the bag. Another feature of the Q-Type airbag is that these can be used again. The end user can take that used cartridge, slide it back into the airbag, place it back into the box and return it to the remanufacturer. For further information, please visit www.uninetimaging.com

CIG’s TCO Worksheets Reveal Cost Benefits of OEM Conversion Chicago, Ill. — Clover Imaging Group (CIG) just launched Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) worksheets for imaging dealers. The TCO worksheets demonstrate to print customers their potential savings when they switch to CIG remanufactured cartridges from national brand (OEM) cartridges. “CIG’s Buyers Laboratory testing results offer a huge opportunity for dealers to prove to their customers the cost savings of switching to CIG imaging supplies, specifically highlighting that there is no loss in quality when making the change,” said Luke Goldberg, EVP Global Sales and Marketing for Clover Imaging Group. “This influential testing verifies once and for all that CIG rivals the OEM in quality, reliability, and page yield, and the TCO worksheets allow dealers to prove that to their customers before they even make the switch.”

18

www.rechargeasia.com

The convenient TCO worksheets help dealers demonstrate to customers the cost savings of switching from highpriced OEMs to CIG remanufactured cartridges without sacrificing quality or performance. Dealers input pertinent information into the TCO such as the impressions or page prints per month, sell price for the OEM cartridges, andsell price for CIG cartridges. The TCO worksheets do all the work for dealers, factoring in the price of the printer, total prints per month, and costs of cartridges, to calculatefor customers the total savings of choosing CIG cartridges over OEM cartridges. Dealers can tailor items such as volumes and pricing in the worksheet to individual customers.

The independent testing showed zero out of box failures, image quality highly comparable to the OEM, and 100% of cartridges met or exceeded stated yields.

Recently, third-party tests by Buyers Laboratory (BLI) proved that print cartridges manufactured by CIG rival the performance of OEM cartridges.

Current CIG dealers should contact their sales representative to obtain the TCO worksheets.

Couple this proof with CIG’s GreenSweep program, and now is the perfect time for imaging dealers to suggest OEM conversion to customers. The GreenSweep program offers dealers up to a 10 percent rebate when they convert existing customers using only OEM cartridges to CIG’s remanufactured products. Dealers can position OEM conversion with GreenSweep to increase margins and to offer customers substantial cost savings, as demonstrated with the TCO tool.

Canon U.S.A. Announces New Approach to Premium-Quality InkJet Printing Canon U.S.A, Inc. announced its new Océ ProStream series inkjet press, a solution designed to open up new business opportunities for commercial p ri n t e r s . L e v e ra g i n g t w o y e a r s o f development and a greenfield approach regarding design, this series is built on new innovative technology that takes high-speed inkjet to the next level of color output quality and media versatility, particularly in high-growth segments such as publishing, premium direct mail, graphic arts, and marketing collateral.

"The ProStream combines and optimizes proven, but previously separate inkjet technologies such as full-page precoating, polymer inks, and extended drying in an elegant design to achieve offset substrate flexibility and output

quality,” said Marco Boer, vicepresident, IT Strategies, Inc. “It is the closest to offset in productivity, color vibrancy, and solid area ink coverage that I have seen from an inkjet press to date."

With a resolution of 1200 dpi and a print rate of 262 feet per minute, this heavy-duty production engine, delivers outstanding quality on a broad range of media. The new series is already winning accolades even before launch: the ProStream has earned a coveted iF design award for 2017. "We are excited about the ability to deliver premium quality on a wide range of media, which in the past was

incredibly hard to achieve with inkjet technologies," said Christine Soward, president, DMS Inc. The latest piezo drop-on-demand inkjet print head generation is leveraged with Océ Multilevel technology for sharper details, smoother half tones and economized ink usage. An Océdeveloped set of ColorGrip and polymer pigment inks creates exciting, vibrant colors that leave a lasting impression The sensitive floatation air dryer ensures that the printed paper is not touched until the print images are fully robust – there are no scratches or changes to gloss levels and minimal paper stress for maximum quality. "As someone who has been in the commercial print industry for 30 years, I was amazed by the quality and versatility this press offers," said Chris Petro, vice president of strategic accounts, Creel Printing. "This product has the opportunity of changing the market as we know it."

Canon PIXMA G4200 Wireless Gets Five-Star Review Canon’s PIXMA G4200 Wireless all-in-one MegaTank has won a praise-filled review from Forbes author Scott Kramer, not least because of its long-lasting ink tank, allowing for 6,000 monochrome and 7,000 color pages, or a year’s worth of printing on average. In addition to the ink, the PIXMA G4200 also has an easy-on-the-eye sleek design and, perhaps more

importantly, is easy to set up, taking less than five minutes. The print quality is also above average, according to Kramer, with photos notably good. There’s also a software suite that goes beyond the minimum, allowing for the printing and scanning of a range of different types of images and layouts.

HP MPS Target All-Network Security Managed print services are a growing market and HP is, due to its size and history, one of the better placed players on this market. According to the company, it focuses more than others on comprehensive protection of the devices it manages from hacking attacks. Rather than protecting just one printer, it secures the whole network of which this printer is part, using realtime threat detection, automatic monitoring and a built-in software validation system that, according to HP is unique on the MPS market. This attention is based on the fact that printers are an especially vulnerable point of entry into an IT system and finding a way to sensitive documentation.

Ken ANG CONVERSATION

by

SUNNY SUN

Editor’s note: I have known Ken Ang, Business Planning Consultant, from RJF Group Pte Ltd Singapore, for many years. Our paths used to often cross at industry events, where we would meet and chat about the latest news in the consumables sector. Then, for a while, he seemed to be absent from these same events, until I noticed him in recent years actively engaged in the Southeast Asia consumables market, most notably the emerging market of Myanmar. Through Ken’s lens, I think you, my readers, will be interested in getting a glimpse into this growing market’s vast potential.

Would you like to briefly describe the history of your business in this consumables industry? How did you get started and why? A friend of mine introduced me to this industry. I was skeptical about it initially, but after doing some market research I was convinced that remanufactured products have a “Green Environmental” value. In 1996, we started off with the remanufacturing of laser toner cartridges. There were not many players in Singapore during that time and we didn’t really face competition. Five years later, in 2001, we started with our copier drum and toner business. From 2014 to 2017, we set up our overseas offices. There are currently 10 offices in Myanmar, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Bangladesh, India and Singapore. We continue to look for opportunities to make ourselves more accessible to our customers.

20

www.rechargeasia.com

What was the biggest challenge you faced, and what was your most rewarding experience during your years in this business? More and more new players are entering this field each year, therefore we continually have to change our strategy to accommodate every unforeseen situation that arises. We knew that price was one of the key challenges for the past few years, but we believe in providing quality products and aftersale services. Other than businesses, over the years we have come upon many different nationalities and we have learned about one another’s cultures. I should say this is already a reward I have being given.

mar and Cambodia. The standard of living has improved for the past 10 years in these countries. Therefore, the requirements have changed as well.

How do you summarize the consumables market in Southeast Asia? More or less, the market is already stagnant in Southeast Asia but I can still see growth in countries like Vietnam, Myan-

You visited Myanmar, how do you view this market in particular and its growth potential? After the sanctions, we have seen big OEM companies like Kyocera and Konica Minolta making their way into the

Where do you see market space still containing opportunities for growth in that region? Due to the increase in labor costs even in the least developing countries, like Myanmar, the people are looking for consistency in their products. Cutting down on the time travel to the site is essential. They require good products to make things happen. The growth I am mentioning here is referring to the increase in demand for higher quality products.

CONVERSATION CORNER th

country. We foresee that demand for aftermarket consumables will increase over the next few years. Moreover, foreign investors are coming in and more hotels and offices are being built. These contribute to the growing demand for consumables, too. What is your company’s growth strategy? “Branding” is a key to success in this new era in the consumables world. We have created the Colt Xtra brand for toners and the Himmel brand for OPC Drums. You need a brand to create awareness with marketing through social media, which I think is a must now. Besides these, we have to make each new product better in order to compete in this fast changing environment. Our principle is to maintain quality consistency to keep our customers. How do you perceive the pricing competition from China? Yes, I do agree that pricing is very sensitive now. This is due to the increase in the number of manufacturers in China. I believe you will need to pay more for better quality products. In this new era in the consumables world, quality and consistency are the two top priorities. Price is secondary.

FEATURE ARTICLES Please share one or two stories that you think would be valuable to the young entrepreneur. There are no shortcuts in life; each step you take could be painful, but ultimately you will enjoy it once it bear fruit. Always listen to advice. It can come from anybody, not only people from the same industry. There is a Chinese idiom that I always keep in mind: “Three dirty cobbler over Zhuge Liang”. It speaks of three ordinary people with a combined wisdom winning over a smart and capable chancellor in state of Shu Han during the three kingdom period. This is what I have learned from my 20+ years of experienced in this industry. What shall we expect from your business development between now and the next five years? The cost of maintaining a business is increasing day by day. However, there is no way we can compromise our quality, even with the rising cost of materials and overhead. We will continue to work on value added services by conducting more workshops and discussion groups to exchange ideas and knowledge.

What is your management style? I give authority to my team leaders. We conduct daily meeting to ensure problems are being addressed and solved instantly. What kind of style, in your view, will work better for business? Sincerity—if you do things with sincerity, people will trust you. Along with patience and compassion, sincerity is one of those qualities we all probably wish we had more of and wish other people had more of, too. People who show sincerity appear to be serious, kind, and truthful. You seem to be a nice and personal person? I am a rewarding person. I want to show to each person that he or she has done something valuable and I encourage those who need improvement. I am strict when it comes to work, but at the end of the day we become more like friends having fun together. What do you like to do most in your spare time? I will spend quality time with my family whenever time permits, as most of the time I am away for business.

Print-Rite’s 3D Technology –A Boon for Precision Medicine Orthopedics in Zhuhai The latest revolutionary cutting-edge technology of 3D printing has taken the world by storm and found its applications in almost all aspects of life. And, if creating a breakthrough in manufacturing was not enough, this technology has achieved yet another milestone in the medical field by going on to become a principal tool for precision medicine. As a new rapid prototyping and manufacturing technology, 3D printing has increasingly garnered the attention of the masses, and also gained huge popularity among medical scholars. Precision, complexity, and customization are some of the most salient features of 3D printing technology. The “Orthopedic 3D printing laboratory”, jointly established by the Second People’s Hospital of Xiangzhou District and Print-Rite Unicorn Image Products Co., Ltd. of Zhuhai, was unveiled on January 18, 2017, and marked the first orthopedic 3D printing laboratory in Zhuhai. The cooperation between PrintRite Unicorn Image Products Co., Ltd. and the Second People’s Hospital of Xiangzhou District is the result of organic integration of clinical applications and the R & D of production enterprises. It also symbolizes the advancement of orthopedics towards a new era in terms of digital technology. “Fracture surgery was previously performed by means of a patient’s X-ray, but the drawback of X-ray mainly lies in its planarization,” said Zhong Botao, Vice President of the Second People’s Hospital of Xiangzhou District. 3D printing can deliver models in real size. A 3D model of a real size part is built based on the data from three-dimensional CT reports of patients before the surgery, thus providing detailed information and visual experience to doctors and even patients. It has sound application prospects and high application value in terms of diagnosis of diseases, design of preoperative surgical planning, demonstration of preoperative surgical simulations, intra operative assisted surgery and postoperative recovery. Mr. Zhong added that 3D printing technology can also be applied to develop preoperative surgical guide for the various complex fractures, severity of joint damage, etc. Doctors leverage 3D printing technology to formulate surgical programs, thereby designing a surgical guide: they first determine the location of internal fixtures after fracture reduction, the orientation, length, and dimensions of screws as well as the required three-dimensional spacing. Surgeries are conducted entirely based on such guides, thus simplifying the surgical process, reducing the surgical trauma to patients and speeding up postoperative recovery. Su Jianqiang, one of the directors on the board of Print-Rite Unicorn Image Products Co., Ltd. of Zhuhai, expressed that “we can produce solid objects of practically any size, shape or internal structure by using 3D printing. Thanks to this technology, patients can now be treated with ‘customized’ skeletal parts as required by their respective treatment, rather than purchasing products of fixed specifications. In other words, products required by patients in the future will be more customized for more accurate treatment. We will continue to explore and create a variety of 3D printing equipment and supplies for the benefit of the medical industry, to better enable the printing of customized parts needed in treating patients."

It is reported that Print-Rite, by virtue of being a pioneer in the world for manufacturing and selling generic printing supplies with 35-years of history, relies on proprietary patents and technical experience and brings together domestic and overseas experts to form the industry’s most professional R&D and business teams. It now boasts of 166 patents in the 3D industry. Meanwhile, they are totally oriented towards the development of 3D printing materials, and is committed to bring 3D solutions for various industries. In the future, it desires to enhance cooperation with more partners in the medical sector and become a leader for 3D holistic solutions in the field of medicine.

Remanufacturing the HP LaserJet Pro M26 Series Toner Cartridge CF279A By Mike Josiah and the Technical Staff at Uninet

Mike Josiah Mike Josiah is the Technical Director at UniNet’s East Coast office, a global distributor of toner, Smartchips, OPC drums, and other toner remanufacturing components. Mr. Josiah is an industry veteran since 1987, and a member of ASTM committee F.05, the STMC Technician Certification committee, as well as an STMC trainer. He and his support team at UniNet contribute with technical articles to industry trade magazines, and conduct seminars at association meetings and tradeshows worldwide.

In October 2016, Hewlett Packard released the LaserJet Pro M26 series of printers. This series of laser printers are based on a 19 ppm, 600dpi engine with a stated first page out in 9.0 seconds. The CF279A toner cartridge is rated for 1,000 pages.

Cartridge Theory:

The printer itself has a very small foot print. It’s a nice small office/home machine. The memory is fixed and not expandable at 128Mb. The “W” versions in this series have wireless capability and also mobile print for Android, Google and HP ePrint.

In the first step, the Primary Charge roller (PCR) places a uniform negative DC Bias voltage on the OPC drum surface. The amount of the negative DC Bias placed on the drum is controlled by the printer’s intensity setting. This process is part of the latent Image formation block. See Figure B

*As of 12/15/16 Because it’s been a long time since we have covered basic printer theory, I have included it here. You don’t have to know the theory to remanufacture cartridges, but it sure helps if you have a problem. Troubleshooting time can be dramatically reduced.

In the second step, the laser beam is fired onto a rotating mirror (called the scanner). As the mirror rotates, the beam reflects into a set of foc u s i n g l e n s . T h e b e a m t h e n strikes the OPC’s surface, which neutralizes the negative charge on the drum and leaves a latent electrostatic image on the drum. See Figures C & D The third step (developing block) is where the toner image is developed on the drum by the developing section, (or supply chamber), which contains the toner particles. The toner is held to the magnetic roller sleeve by the stationary magnet inside the sleeve, and a DC bias voltage supplied by the high voltage power supply. This DC bias voltage is controlled by the printer’s density setting, and causes either more or less toner to be attracted to the drum. This in turn will either

increase or decrease the print density. Both the Primary Charge roller and magnetic roller DC Bias voltages are controlled by the printer’s density setting. The amount of toner on the magnetic roller sleeve is also controlled by the rubber Doctor blade, which uses pressure to keep the amount of toner on the magnetic roller sleeve constant. This blade also causes a static charge to build up on the toner, which helps keep the coating of toner even, and allows easy transfer to the OPC drum.

At the same time an AC signal is also placed on the magnetic roller sleeve. This signal decreases the attraction of the toner to the Magnetic Roller sleeve, and increases the repelling action of toner against the areas of the drum that was not exposed to the laser beam. This AC potential improves the density, and contrast of the toner on the printed page. See Figure E

Figure E As the laser exposed areas of the OPC drum approach the magnetic roller, the toner particles are attracted to the drum’s surface due to the opposite voltage potentials of the toner, and laser exposed surface of the OPC drum.

In the fourth step (transfer block) the toner image is then transferred to the paper as it passes below the drum by the transfer charge roller, which places a positive charge on the back of the paper. This positive charge causes the

negatively charged toner on the drum’s surface to be attracted to the page. The small diameter of the drum, combined with the stiffness of the paper causes the paper to peel away from the drum. See Figure F In the fifth step (also part of the transfer block) the paper separates from the drum. The static charge eliminator weakens the attractive forces between the negatively charged drum surface, and the positively charged paper. This prevents toner dropouts onto the paper at low temperatures and humidity and also prevents paper from wrapping around the drum. In the Sixth step the image is then fused on to the paper by the fuser assembly, which is comprised of the upper fixing film assembly and the lower fuser roller. The paper passes between a heated upper fixing film assembly and a soft lower rubber roller. The upper heated element then melts the toner into the paper. The fixing film assembly consists of a Teflon sleeve with a ceramic heating element inside. These fusers are a bit different in that they have a Brush which has a DC Bias charge on it to help keep the film clean. See Figure G In the Seventh step the OPC drum is cleaned. On average, approximately 95% of the toner is transferred to the paper during the print cycle. As the drum rotates during printing, the remaining 5% of the toner that is on the OPC drum is cleaned off the drum by the wiper blade. It is then guided into the waste chamber by the recovery blade, and stored in the waste chamber. See Figure H Step 8 is where the residual charge is eliminated. Both the PCR and the laser unit are used for this. The Primary Charge Roller places an AC voltage across the drum surface and the laser unit’s
