READING

The Flash Boys by Michael Lewis is selected as the best book of 2014 in business and investing, and I hope this book will help get a glimpse of the financial world. Here is the review from Amazon: Flash Boys is about a small group of Wall Street guys who figure out that the U.S. stock market has been rigged for the benefit of insiders and that, post–financial crisis, the markets have become not more free but less, and more controlled by the big Wall Street banks. Working at different firms, they come to this realization separately; but after they discover one another, the flash boys band together and set out to reform the financial markets. This they do by creating an exchange in which high-frequency trading—source of the most intractable problems—will have no advantage whatsoever.

PR-2 Gear Leaves Door Open for Remanufactured Cartridges Is a photosensitive drum including an OEM “dongle” gear and a third party’s sleeve classified as a permissible “repair”? This question is critical to each side of the currently ongoing 337-TA918 investigation. However, nobody has yet given a convincing answer to this question. More respondents are settling with Canon under a term that any cartridge, including a photosensitive drum that was not made by or on behalf of Canon or its affiliates, is not permitted unless there is a final adjudication of permissible repair or any analogous defense. As such, if no respondents challenge this point and subsequently win their case, then Canon’s terms would severely impact the remanufacturing industry, as reuse of an OEM “dongle” gear with a non-OEM drum sleeve would be prohibited, and reuse of an OEM ‘dongle” gear with an OEM drum sleeve is not practical. Remanufacturers are becoming more and more concerned that the door to remanufactured OEM “dongle” gear cartridges would be closed and the corresponding manufactured products would soon be cleared from the market. As a market leader, Print-Rite has always respected other manufacturers’ patents, but in an effort to address this industry concern our R&D department has dedicated a large part of its resource in an effort to find a workable solution to this problem. After many months of research & development, Print-Rite is pleased to announce a breakthrough

with our PR-2 drum gear, an innovation to replace the OEM “ d o n g l e ” g e a r. The PR-2 drum gear has received non-infringement opinions from two prominent US patent firms and, f u r t h e r, t h e P R - 2 gear has obtained worldwide patent protection. Print-Rite has strong confidence that the PR-2 gear will alleviate the industry concerns of “dongle” patents and leave a door open for remanufacturers to invigorate the manufacturing business regardless of the aftermath of the ITC investigation. The PR-2 gear is suitable for a wide range of monochrome cartridges and drums, including but not limited to HP CE505, Canon CF280, and HP CE255 series.

Fuji Xerox Eyes Sales of 11 Mln Printers to China in 2014/15

129th Issue - January 2015

Printing Market Seen Growing 8% 2011-2017

Japanese imaging giant Fuji Xerox expects its total printer shipments to China to reach 10.9 million in financial 2014/15, bringing it closer to its stated revenue target of $1 billion for mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau. For its last full financial year that ended this March, Fuji Zerox generated revenues of nearly $800 million in the country. Despite the overall positive outlook, company president Tadahito Yamamoto admitted the Fuji-Xerox joint venture still faced challenges in terms of market share, as consumers in China overwhelmingly prefer cheaper printers. However, the challenge could be seen as an opportunity as well, as this state of affairs gives Fuji Xerox more room for growth, Yamamoto pointed out. Another company official, the head of Fuji Xerox's business in greater China, said the way to achieving the $1 billion milestone was focusing more on the provision of managed print services to large local companies. It started offering these around 2010 and now has the ambitious goal of raising the contribution of MPS to the overall revenues to 50% over the next two years.

Analysts Say HP Did Well to Go into 3D Printing Two new analytical reports should be like music to the ears of HP's management -both of them suggest that the company is in for a huge payoff after entering the 3D printing sector. The first report, by ID TechEx Research, says that the uses and applications of 3D printing technology is increasing at a fast pace and a wide scale, driving respective growth in 3D printing materials. The firm predicted that the 3D printing market will reach $8 billion by 2025. The second report was compiled by Brean Capital and concluded that HP's entry into the industry will play a major role in the company's future as 3D printing becomes a mainstream technology.

New US-China Accord Could Remove Tariffs on $1 Trln Worth of IT Goods A new accord between the US and China, which is an expansion of the 1996 Information Technology Agreement, could see the face of global sourcing changed. When finalized, the accord will strip some $1 trillion worth of IT equipment and products of current tariffs, opening the doors of purchasing managers to higher-quality, more costly materials and equipment at an affordable price. The accord concerns things like semiconductors, MRI machines, printer ink cartridges, GPS devices, and other IT products. The accord is expected to be finalized at the World Trade Organization summit later this year.

3D printing may have taken some of the attention away from traditional printing but the industry is by no means dead or dying. According to a recent report by Research and Market, the printing market will grow 8% between 2011 and 2017, reaching $668 billion by the latter year. The biggest single contributor to this market size will be China, as opposed to the biggest contributor in 2011, which was the US. In terms of business types, package print will have a 43% market share in 2017, up from 35% in 2007. The reason for this positive development is the revival of the global economy following the financial crisis. With the economy doing better, people's spending power is improving and printer sales are rising, Research and Market notes. This is particularly true of the developing world, which offers print products and services providers the biggest growth potential. While China will account for $141.8 billion of the market in 2017, countries such as the Philippines, Indonesia, and some of the countries in Eastern Europe, like Hungary and Ukraine, will also offer fertile ground for the print industry.

3D Printed Body Parts Could Soon Become Mainstream Medicine is one of the most promising areas for the further development of 3D printing technologies. A growing number of doctors are using it to aid their work. And it's not just prosthetic limbs that surgeons are making. One team of scientists, for instance, 3D printed an airway that saved the life of a three-month baby, and that was back in 2012. Another, more recently, used 3D printing to create a model for the jaw of a baby who was born with a malformation in this part of her body. Based on the 3D model, doctors managed to fix the baby's jaw, and have since then been using 3D modeling on a regular basis. And what does the future hold for medics? 3D printing human tissues, for one thing. And tissues created from natural human cells. Experiments with human tissue complete with blood vessels have been successful, and now the next challenge is to come up with complete organs. It sounds like science fiction maybe but we may live to see it happen.

3D Printing in Space Successful NASA's project aiming to discover whether 3D printing would work in zero gravity has been successful. The first item the machine completed was a component part for it -- a print tray. The project, which got a lot of attention due to the numerous implications it would have if successful, was started last month when the space agency sent a specially built 3D printer to the International Space Station.

3D Printed Organs, Food Coming Our Way Because the 3D printing industry is so fascinating and there are thousands of potential and actual applications for the technology, the sector abounds with speculation. But some of this has already become reality: 3D printing is increasingly used in medicine, experiments with 3D printed food are bearing fruit, so to speak, and there is a host of other applications that would not have been thought possible just a decade ago. Speaking of medicine, prosthetics are perhaps the first thing that comes to mind with relation to 3D printing. But scientists have also managed to 3D print blood vessels and liver tissue. No, that doesn't mean that liver transplants are a day away, it means that now researchers would be able to perform tests on these tissues that would be impossible on living humans. And what about food? One company, Natural Machines, is planning to start mass-scale production of its 3D printer Foodini after June next year. It will be marketing a consumer model with a price tag of just $1,000 that can 3D print any food you want. It is also planning a second model that will 3D print cooked food. Firearms are another area of development for 3D printing. Although the first one that was released last year, the Liberator, was shunned as unreliable (after it exploded), the technology is moving fast, and a few people have proven that 3D printed guns have a future with the right ammunition that prevents them from overheating. The future could also see 3D printed houses, cars, musical instruments, clothes, and bicycles becoming mainstream, as well as hundreds of other things that are now manufactured the traditional way or things that are currently impossible to make.

After this first success, the crew of the ISS will go on to print a variety of tools and parts that will be transported back to Earth, to be compared with identical tools and parts printed there. Based on this comparison, the 3D printer's manufacturer, Made In Space, will build an upgraded version of its machine and then send it to the ISS early next year.

3D Printing Pen Writes in Nano

3D Systems Releases 3 New Printers, 4 Filaments

South Korean scientists have created a 3D printing pen, which works in nanoscale. This may sound mind-boggling, so here's how it works.

Israel-based 3D Systems, one of the main players in the 3D printing market is releasing three new machines and six new printing materials ahead of the EuroMold 2014, an industry expo that will take place in Germany at the end of this month.

The device has a tip that is actually a microscopic hydrogel pyramid. The tip of this pyramid is soaked in a type of electrolyte that causes an electrochemical reaction. This electrolyte creates a contact area between the hydrogel and the printing surface, which is an ultramicroelectrode. The pen also has a nanopositioning system, which is responsible for its precision. This it does by regulating the faradaic reaction that results in electroplating. As for the applications of this pen, they include making nanoscale films in a cheaper and more environmentally friendly manner, as well as making these films more geometrical; traditional electrodeposition methods create rather flat, onedimensional nanowires.

3D Printing with Stainless Steel Now Gets Special Shine A 3D printer filament producer, Proto-pasta, has launched a couple of new printing materials that can yield different results depending on your liking. Both are based on polylactic acid, but one also includes stainless steel, and the other features magnetic iron. That's right, items printed with that filament will attract iron objects. The stainless steel PLA filament can produce objects that you could leave looking like they were made from cast iron, or you can polish them to a brilliant shine. The second boasts the option of oxidized iron, which adds a rusty patina to the printed item. Because of the presence of metal in the filament, the items printed with them feel like they are entirely made of metal rather than a plastic-containing material.

22

www.rechargeasia.com

The printer lineup includes the ProX 400 Direct Metal Printer, the ProX 800, and the ProX500 Plus. The first machine is a complete production unit for larger items. The ProX 800 is a stereolitography printer that boasts high speeds allowing for greater volumes of items to be printed in a short time, including parts with complex geometrical forms. The last product in the lineup, the ProX 500 Plus, a selective laser sintering machine, is also a faster printer, which will use a range of new materials. In the materials segment, 3D Systems will be showcasing four new ones for its microSLA ProJet 1200. These include FTX Cast, a material for ash-free wax casts, TFX Gold and Silver, for shimmering models, and the FTX Clear, which as the name suggests will be used for transparent prototypes. The last material, FTX Gray, for items such as figurines, to be later painted. In addition, 3D Systems will be releasing other printing materials, for its ProJet 5500X, which prints using multiple materials. The company boasts an option with up to 14 composite materials for a single build.

A 3D Printing Multifunctional? Here It Is. The 3D printing industry has truly provided innumerable opportunities for anyone with a maker's mind-frame. The latest example is a multifunctional device that can work as a 3D printer, laser engraver, and scanner. Called FLUX, the device has a modular head that can be changed for the different jobs a user wants to have it do. It really brings a lot in one place: you can 3D scan an item and have it printed immediately, and you can have some parts laser cut, saving a lot of time. FLUX also has some remarkable software -- it allows the user to draw a simple picture and then turn it into a 3D model, effectively making the 3D printing technology ever more accessible. The price tag is also accessible, starting at $499 and ending at $1,999. The first shipments are planned for summer 2015.

2014 -- The Top 3D Printing Advances This year has been a good one for the 3D printing industry -- a lot of newcomers, chief among them HP, a lot of new breakthroughs, and a lot of plain quirky stories. Here are ten of the best stories from the industry this year. 1. 3D printing possible in space -- Just a couple of weeks ago, ISS astronauts demonstrated that 3D printing is possible in zero gravity. NASA commissioned and Made in Space designed the special 3D printer, whose output will now be compared with objects made on Earth to see if the print job quality is equal. 2. Cars can be 3D printed -- A company called Local Motors succeeded in printing a whole vehicle using direct digital manufacturing. The Strati is a twoseater that is easy on the eye and took just 44 hours of printing and two days of assembly.

Falling 3D Printer Prices, Software Advances Increase Tech's Versatility

3. New ceramics printing technique -- A Dutch artist, Olivier van Herpt, came up with a new technique that uses ceramics as a printing material. The technique allows for the 3D printing of objects up to 80 cm high and up to 42 cm in diameter, effectively making rapid prototyping closer to human scale. 4. Pirate3D creates photos for blind people -- One more proof of the huge versatility of 3D printing is this company's "Touchable memories" -- a conversion of ordinary photographs into 3D structures that can help visually impaired people take part in the pastime known as "just looking at some family pictures". 5. A new letter press font -- Three companies -- New North Press, A2-Type, and Chalk Studios -- created a whole new 3D printed letterpress font as a creative way of connecting history and modernity. The letters are 3D printed but pressed in a traditional print studio. 6. 3D printed architecture -- In further proof that the possibilities are endless, a Minnesota engineer, Andrey Rudenko, has built a whole castle made of concrete and fully inhabitable. While the whole structure could not be 3D printed in one go, it still looks quicker and more accurate to have the walls and the towers 3D printed, albeit separately, than having the whole thing built the traditional way. 7. A 3D printing pen -- This aluminum device created by British LIX allows you to literally draw and doodle in the air. Apart from doodles, you can make a small prototype in a matter of seconds, as well as any accessory or a 3D drawing. 8. Adobe makes modeling easier -- The company said this year it will be offering 3D printing support in Photoshop CC as a way of simplifying the production process and making it more accurate. The update includes a number of new features such as a perspective warp and linked smart objects, plus a host of capabilities allowing users to do everything themselves, then just send the ready design to a 3D printing provider. 9. Nike prints bag -- While 3D printing already has a place in fashion, Nike was the first to bet on the technology for a sports bag. Its lightweight Rebento duffel is made of leather and laser-sintered nylon, without the use of adhesives or glue -just what an athlete needs. 10. Van Gogh's ear is alive -- 3D printing has made it possible to re-create the infamous severed ear of the Dutch genius, using cartilage made from human tissue, and not just anyone's but that of a living relative of van Gogh's. And it really is alive -- it's kept in a jar of nutrient solution.

3D printers are becoming more accessible in terms of price and their creators are expanding their color and design capabilities in a way that is bringing the technology step by step closer to regular household use. Advancements in software are aiding this development. The color palettes are getting more extensive, and the software now allows designers to turn even their boldest visions into reality. One such example is designer Francis Bitonti, who earlier created a 3D printed dress. While that garment was all black, Bitonti has just recently presented a pair of 3D printed platform shoes with gradient colors that gently flow from yellow to dark blue. The designer used Adobe Photoshop software and a Stratasys printer to make the shoes, which he named Molecule. Exciting as this is, industry insiders admit that this particular technology is still too complex for the regular household user. Yet, according to Adobe Photoshop's product manager Andy Lauta, the company is aiming to make the 3D modeling process more democratic, allowing users without a background in engineering to create equally complex models.

Aerospace Industry Increasingly Trusting 3D Printing The aerospace industry is not known for hasty innovation. The safety levels required in manufacturing processes there are reason enough. Yet, the business is opening up to 3D printing, using it for more and more parts. Aircraft makers are starting small, but soon we may be able to see wings, engine components, and drones being 3D printed. In space, 3D printing is used to create on-demand parts, and in the future it could be used as a service for preprototyping. Boeing, for instance, is planning to start making whole wings using 3D printers once the technology allows it -- for now, there are spatial constraints for such large objects, as well concern about the solidity of the printed object when it is of such size. However, BAE Systems has developed a technique that involves repeatedly striking the component with an ultrasonic tool, to make the metal stronger. Jet engine parts are also an area where 3D printing is already being used, in prototyping for now. This is especially true for complex, intricate elements, which could be made with a higher degree of accuracy by a 3D printer.

Autodesk Launches Ember 3D Printer By Order

3D printing in space could be a major blessing, as it will greatly reduce the supply chain and, respectively, time between ordering a specific part and having it made and delivered. At the moment, there are tests being made on the International Space Station, to see if 3D printing could work in zero gravity, which would allow astronauts to make their own parts and tools when they need them. Unmanned aircraft is an even richer soil for the development of 3D printing applications. Drones are all the rage these days, and they are being used for an increasing number of things. 3D printers could make them uniquely suited for the mission they will be used for, such as disaster area surveillance. When it comes to 3D printing as a service, one obvious application is quick pre-prototyping, as NASA has already sensed. With it, aerospace engineers could get feedback from other experts, get access to fresh design perspectives, and be able to approve new prototypes much quicker than before, thanks to open source software.

24

Autodesk has started marketing its own 3D printer, Ember, but unlike other manufacturers, it will sell by order only. That's because the company has no intention of competing with the big players in the 3D printing hardware field but is instead aiming to use the machine as a means to showcase its Spark platform. Spark was released in May, and Ember was first presented there. Now, however, Autodesk is starting the Ember Explorer Program, a community of software developers, scientists, and other stakeholders, who will have the opportunity to try Ember and the associated software and support services. Autodesk is looking forward to the feedback of the Ember Explorer Program, which will go towards improving the whole Spark ecosystem, which the company aims to develop on an open-source basis.

About Mcor Technologies Ltd

One of the majors in 3D printing, Voxeljet, has announced a new printing method called phenolic direct binding (PDB), which, they say, offers much more accurate and high-precision results than the other currently available methods. What's more, items printed using phenolic resin binders are significantly stronger than their counterparts produced with another method. An added benefit is that the material that is left after the print job is completed does not go to waste as it does with other printing method, which require a pre-treatment of the silica sand that's used in the printing job. Instead, the sand used with PDB can be collected afterwards and recycled. The PDB method is particularly suitable for the printing of ceramic molds, the company notes, adding that it will be available on the market around mid-2015.

Mcor Technologies Ltd is an innovative manufacturer of the world's most affordable, full-colour and eco-friendly 3D printers. They are the only 3D printers to use ordinary business letter and A4 paper as the build material, a choice that renders durable, stable and tactile models. Established in 2004 with a talented team of specialists in the area of 3D printing, software and CAD/CAM, Mcor's vision is to make 3D printing more accessible to everyone. The company operates internationally from offices in Ireland, the UK and America. www.mcortechnologies.com.

NovaCopy Announces Launch of 3D Printing University Hands-On Class Instruction to Begin With "Introduction to 3D Printing" NASHVILLE, TN-- NovaCopy, Inc., 3D Systems top reseller in the South, is taking its 3D Printing education to a new level with hands-on 3D Printing classes. Launching "NovaCopy 3D University" (3DU), NovaCopy offered the first official 3D Printing class at its facilities in Nashville in October. NovaCopy's President of 3D Printing Solutions, Melissa Ragsdale, said the educational initiative stems from increased interest in NovaCopy's 3D solutions as well as the lack of base knowledge and confidence the enduser usually has. "We are seeing a strong interest in 3D technology and solutions in our markets," Ragsdale said. "However, there currently is no easy route for an end-user to gain experience with both the hardware and software of 3D Printing. NovaCopy decided to create a 3D university centered around hands-on instruction in 3D modeling and printing via classroom-style training courses." Attendees of the entry-level, three-hour class, which is open to anyone interested in 3D Printing technology, will be held at NovaCopy's 3D Print lab in Nashville. The promotional cost of the class is $299 per registrant. Class curriculum include basic information from how 3D Printing works to more involved processes such as what it takes to design a 3D model. Utilizing NovaCopy's state-of-the-art hardware and taught by experts in the 3D printing industry, attendees work at their own 3D workstation (complete with 3D printer) enabling them to leave class with an actual 3D-printed object. Plans for additional hands-on courses and enhanced certification are currently being developed and will be presented through NovaCopy 3D University in the coming months. Classes will be held at NovaCopy's branch offices, but can also be offered on-location at a business or organization provided certain criteria are met. "We're excited about what the future holds for 3D Printing," said Ragsdale. "Education has always played a key role in advancing technology and having NovaCopy 3DU provide that education to businesses and 3D enthusiasts will only help speed that advancement." Open Materials Development Paves Way for HP in 3D Hewlett-Packard (HP) recently released a white paper detailing its planned 3D printer. HP’s "Multi Jet Fusion" system claims a tenfold increase in build speed, improved part quality with controllable properties like color, elasticity and strength, and better "economics" than current offerings. HP's accompanying press release said the printers would be available in 2016. Along with its decision to split into two companies, this move into the 3D printing space would appear geared at turning around the company’s financial fortunes and reversing a declining culture of innovation. However, to maximize its opportunity, it will need to avoid importing innovation-unfriendly practices from its conventional printer businesses. “However lucrative it might be for an established inkjet printer business, the emerging field of 3D printing will reward more open material models, like the one that 3D printer company Arcam used to break into aerospace and medical device markets,” said Ross Kozarsky, Lux Research senior analyst covering Advanced Materials. “HP should avoid the shortsighted razor/blade business model--already employed by the likes of 3D Systems, Stratasys, and EOS--which prioritizes next quarter’s profits over innovation and long term growth.” What's more, a closer reading of the white paper reveals reasons for caution about the hype for HP's performance claims, in several key areas:

• Speed and part precision. HP is not the first to try to improve printer throughput; technologies like Loughborough University’s High Speed Sintering (HSS) printer have achieved similar tenfold improvement in print speed. However, the tradeoff is part precision, as printed parts require post-processing to achieve surface quality--HP’s printer will likely also feature quality trade-offs. • Part properties. HP’s white paper contains a laundry list of impressive properties that the new printer will be able to control: surface roughness, friction, opacity, color, and electrical and thermal conductivity. There is a catch, however; reading the footnotes reveals that these are just possibilities, and not all have been selected for inclusion in the first generation of printers. At this time, HP has only demonstrated parts with multiple colors, which is likely the only capability that will make it into the 2016 model printers. • Economics. HP compares its offerings only to expensive selective laser sintering (SLS) printers like those of 3D Systems or EOS, that range in price from $200,000 to $1.2 million. Meanwhile, companies like Z Corp (now owned by 3D Systems) offer printers cheaper than $40,000, which would make HP's look far less favorable

in comparison. HP also gives no estimate of material or binder costs, a critical input for total cost of ownership. Despite these significant questions regarding the value proposition of the Multi Jet Fusion, HP’s entry into the 3D printing space remains significant as it is sure to attract attention and catalyze innovation and investment activity industry-wide. If HP can deliver on refining its hardware technology and allow material experts to help it push the envelope with an open model, it can play a key role in bringing 3D printing mainstream. Until then, HP’s claims of revolutionizing the 3D printing space will remain as flimsy as the paper they are printed on.

Regulators Keep Close Eye on 3D Printing Despite a bright growth outlook for 3D printing globally, regulators are still mistrustful of the technology, perhaps because it is a completely new way of making objects. The main issues that concern watchdogs is the behavior of 3D printed items as times passes by, whether or not their quality is durable, and the materials that are used for printing them. While such concerns are easily understandable, they could also slow down the development of new applications of the technology. The problem, according to one industry insider, is

28

www.rechargeasia.com

that 3D printed products are much more difficult to evaluate than ones produced with standard manufacturing processes such as molding. But another insider says that the problem lies with the fact that additive manufacturing is just too novel a concept for regulators, and this novelty breeds the mistrust. it's very likely, actually, that there are more than one factor at play here. Whatever the reasons, companies using 3D printing in their operations have consistently reported much lower costs and much quicker production times for certain objects.

The Impact of the Durability of A Cartridge On the Profit of MPS Contracts Long term, the purpose of any business is to maximize profit. MPS is not an exception. Controlling the profitability of each MPS contract is not only recommended: it is indeed a very healthy exercise for your company. So what happens when you find out that the expected durability of the cartridge you ship to your customers is not being reached? In other words, for every page your customers print you lose money. This situation happens more frequently than what people think. Let’s see the reasons behind and the actions that the MPS service provider can take.

Theoretical vs actual durability. There are two types of durability: the theoretical durability, also called expected durability, and the actual durability. The expected durability is determined at an early stage during the proposal phase, but it is only fixed upon the contract signature. The theoretical durability is the first risk that is assumed and taken by the MPS provider. It is also the only risk that he cannot control by himself, but for which he is the one assuming it all. The yield published by the cartridge manufacturer is the starting point for the calculation of the theoretical durability. Though in most cases the contract validates this yield (97% of signed contracts take the published manufacturer yield as the expected yield for the contract), in some cases, during contract negotiations, the durability is modified in order to address the printing specificity of the customer. In these cases, the customer negotiates a better cost per page with the argument that his average printing document uses less coverage than normal. Once the contract starts, we start talking about actual durability. This is the average durability of the cartridge in the end customer’s printers. The actual durability is the empiric observation of the average number of pages per cartridge that a printer has been able to print during a specified period of time. Please note how simple this concept is, which is in contrast with the complexity to calculate it in real life. But the actual durability does not mean anything per se. It needs to be compared with the expected durability. Should the actual durability be higher than theoretical, then the MPS service provider is making an extra margin (operational

32

www.rechargeasia.com

margin). Should it be lower, then the MPS service provider is losing margin and action is required.

Example: During the period from June 1st till September 30th a printer has printed 23,465 pages and it has used 1.53 cartridges. The actual yield of the cartridge for this printer during the period has then be 15,337pages/cartridge. As mentioned, the actual yield is just one more piece of data, and it is meaningless unless we compare it. Let’s suppose that the theoretical durability of the cartridge in this contract is 20,000 pages. The lower actual durability implies that the MPS provider is losing margin (or even having a net loss) on each page that his customer prints. In our example, the dealer has a loss of profit equal to 23.32% of the revenue. Should the dealer have priced the contract with a margin of 30%, his actual margin would decrease to just 6.7%!

Contract vs printer level analysis. A contract is the sum of all printers managed for this customer. A loss generated by an individual printer in a contract is in most cases compensated by extra profit obtained in other printers of the same contract. The overall result is what matters. If the average durability of the cartridges utilized in a Contract during a specific period of time is overall lower than the expected durability, the MPS provider is then losing money in this contract. If he doesn’t react, he will find himself after 5 years with significant dollars lost with this customer.

Why can the expected durability be higher than actual durability? There are reasons why a cartridge’s durability is less than its expected yield. One of them is that the cartridge does not really last as long as expected. Opposite to what many people think, this happens with great frequency. Most of the toner manufacturers and high quality remanufacturers perform tests in their labs to determine the yield of their cartridges. But in a real environment it may differ quite significantly. This is why some complement the lab results with quality controls in a real world production environment using the information that Nubeprint yield management tool provides.

129th Issue - January 2015

MARKET SEGMENTS

The profitability analysis. No matter if this is an OEM cartridge or a remanufactured cartridge. The fact is that the durability directly impacts the profit of an MPS contract. The control of the actual durability is therefore part of the profitability analysis of a contract. It is performed for the first time at an early stage in the life of the MPS contract. But the profitability can change over time. The customer may change its printing habits with new documents that have a higher coverage. The manufacturer may also change the specificities of his cartridges without even perceiving the impact during his tests in labs. For these reasons, the MPS provider must regularly do a follow-up and control any new deviation.

HP Leads LargeFormat Printer Market

Solving a low durability issue.

HP is the leader on the large-format printer market as of the end of the third quarter, thanks to growth in shipments of technical machines and HP Latex printers. The market itself registered growth of 0.6%, with shipments increasing on the year, but revenues remaining largely unchanged because of product promotions.

When the cartridges do not print as many pages as they are expected to, the dealer has to come back to his cartridge supplier and re-open the negotiation. Of course, proving that the actual yield is lower than the published yield is complex unless the dealer has Nubeprintsystem managing his printers. This is one of the most complex though useful functionalities, and guaranties the permanent control of the profitability of each contract. The negotiation with the supplier is tough, and the success is not guaranteed. For this reason, it is always recommended that the MPS provider has alternatives for the supplies. Using printer models for which there are multiple alternatives in the market (manufacturer and re-manufactured products) is a sane business strategy. MPS is about managing risks. A good starting point is accepting the fact that the most important risk one must manage in a multiyear contract is the supplies. So, controlling that the toners, drums and other supplies are performing as expected is a fundamental necessity for an MPS provider.

The CAD/technical business segment seems to be the most lively one, with shipments there growing notably, especially of inkjet machines, which more than compensated for the decrease in the sales of wide-format tonerbased printers. Projections for this segment this year are for a 5.2% increase.

Remanufacturing the Brother HL L8350 Series Toner Cartridges TN-331/336 Color Toner Cartridges By Mike Josiah, Technical Director of UniNet Imaging

Mike Josiah Mike Josiah is the Technical Director at UniNet’s East Coast office, a global distributor of toner, Smartchips, OPC drums, and other toner remanufacturing components. Mr. Josiah is an industry veteran since 1987, and a member of ASTM committee F.05, the STMC Technician Certification committee, as well as an STMC trainer. He and his support team at UniNet contribute with technical articles to industry trade magazines, and conduct seminars at association meetings and tradeshows worldwide.

The Brother HL-L8350 printer engine is based on a new 32 ppm black and color, 2400 x 600 DPI color LED engine. The machines come standard with 128Mb expandable to 384Mb of memory, and all run off a 400 MHz processor. All models come standard with duplex built in and some have wireless interfaces. With print speeds of up to 32ppm and street pricing starting at $349.00, these machines have become very popular. The toner cartridges do not have a reset chip on them, but do have a reset gear that must be positioned properly for the machine to accept it as a new cartridge. The proper reset position of the gear will be covered later in this instruction. The gears themselves can be a bit confusing as there are different configurations worldwide. Basically it comes down to this. For STD yield cartridges (1.5 or 2.5K) color or black use a White reset gear. For High Yield cartridges (3.5 or 4k) color or black use a Gray reset gear. Extra High Yield cartridges (6k) color or black use a Black reset gear. All three gears are slightly different. Starter cartridges do not come with a reset gear. Any starter cartridge can be converted to a STD, HY or EHY cartridge. In different areas of the world different yields are available so there is not a separate color reset gear nor a separate black reset gear. Below is a chart of which cartridges are used in what location, the part numbers and yield. The gear that should be used for each is indicated by the yield. North, South, Central, America Region (USA Brother.com) SY = TN331 C/M/Y (1,500pages)

44

www.rechargeasia.com

SY = TN331 BK (2,500 pages) HY = TN336 BK/C/M/Y (4,000 pages) EHY = TN339 BK/C/M/Y (6,000 pages) (HL-L9200 only) European Region (UK Brother.com) SY = TN321 BK (2,500 pages) SY = TN321 C/M/Y (1,500pages) HY = TN326 BK (4,000 pages) HY = TN326 C/M/Y (3,500 pages) EHY = TN329 BK/C/M/Y (6,000 pages) Asia, Oceania Region (HK Brother.com) SY = TN351 BK/ C/M/Y (1,500 pages) HY = TN359 BK/C/M/Y (6,000 pages) Asia, Oceania Region (Australia Brother. com) SY = TN341 BK (2,500 pages) SY = TN341 C/M/Y (1,500 pages) HY = TN346 BK (3,500 pages) HY = TN336 C/M/Y (4,000 pages) Japan Region (Japan Brother.com) SY = TN391 BK (2,500 pages) SY = TN391 C/M/Y (1,500pages) HY = TN396 BK (4,000 pages) HY = TN396 C/M/Y (3,500 pages) When the printer senses a new toner cartridge, the printer bias voltage is set to a specific high voltage. As the cartridge is used, the bias voltage is reduced gradually down to a lower voltage. This process is necessary because according to Brother, a new toner cartridge has a tendency to print light. As the cartridge is used, the density increases (Lower voltage = higher density). To keep the density level even throughout its life, the density bias voltage is reduced accordingly. Each time a new cartridge is installed, the reset gear engages the gear train. The

rib on the reset gear pushes down on the new toner sensor. The bias voltage is then reset, and the cartridge page count is reset to zero. All three cartridges have different stages set for the bias voltage, that’s why there are three different gears. While the cartridge yield is stated in pages printed, it actually is based on the revolutions of the developer roller. The larger the run, the better the yield. There are roller cycles for every print job and automatic ones too. There is the warm-up cycle, color registration cycle, developer bias cycle etc. As these cycles are normally run once per job, the bigger the print job, the better the yield. There are multiple revolutions for each cycle and some will run upon turning the printer on or opening the front cover. They can range from 35 rotations to as much as 262 rotations for each function so you can see how they can add up quickly. Brother has charts that cover different sized print jobs and how they relate to the total effective yield.

About Color Control: Help to Deeply Understand ICC

这些问题都可以将因 ICC(InternationalColorConsortium) 工业标准的出现而获得妥善的解决。

An Introduction of Wuhan Zongxiang Company

Two Special Methods of Taking Out Cartridges from Tablet Printers
