ONE-ON-ONE WITH REBEL FASHION DESIGNER

ANGELA KNOWLES Do you remember when you first became aware of fashion?

Not exactly. I think it has always been a part of conscience thought for me.

I remember entering an art competition in kindergarten and I submitted a dress made entirely out of rainbows. As long as I can remember fashion has been a very big part of my life.

Who’s the cheerleader you envision when you design your collections?

Honestly, if Ginger Spice was a cheerleader that is who I envision. I am all about Girl Power! I think of young women who are strong, sassy, and powerful.

What inspired you for this year’s 2017 Purple Label Collection?

So many different inspirations come to mind! I would say architecture, early 2000’s Pop music, and 1970’s embroidery and needlework. I know that sounds completely random but that is kind of how my brain works. It’s a kitchen sink up there.

Who is your favorite Rebel and why?

Frida Khalo. Frida was such a pioneer. She really put herself into her work whether or not it was considered socially acceptable. I have read about her for years and I think she is incredibly admirable, and so brave! To be a fashion designer I believe you have to be an artist at heart. Frida is an artist I always look to when I am feeling lost or uninspired.

What trends from the runway this year have translated especially well to allstar cheerleading uniforms?

This year I have seen a lot of laser cut designs, brocades and embroidery, and lacing. All of these are trending on the runways and have definitely infiltrated the cheer world.

What’s a typical workday like for you?

Busy, busy, busy! I am designing all day as well working on other projects and technical work that is necessary to get the job done. I am an expert multi-tasker.

How would your friends describe you?

Creative, reliable, and open-minded.

What do you love most about being a Rebel Fashion Designer?

I am allowed to be as creative as I want to be! Our customers are challenging us and it never gets old. Also, seeing our Rebels hit the matt in a uniform that makes them feel beautiful and strong is soooooo fulfilling.

What is the most challenging part about being a designer?

Deadlines and all the behind the scenes work! Fashion seems really glamorous but it is A LOT of work. So much goes into each design, some days are long and tiring but it is always worth it in the end.

What are your top three must-haves for the summer?

SPF, holographic accessories, and embroidered denim shorts.

What is the method to your design process?

My method changes depending on what I am trying to accomplish, but for the most part, I try and start with inspiration images and I see where that takes me. For a customer ordering a couture uniform for example, I will look through their previous uniforms and get a feel for their style. Then I will find a new inspiration and start designing combining both elements.

Where do you go for inspiration?

Inspiration is everywhere, sometimes it just a mood or feeling. I listen to music a lot when I am designing. It helps me get in the right mind set. Other days it might be high fashion designs, art, or even Pinterest. I look at color boards on Pinterest all the time.

Why did you choose fashion as your creative outlet?

Fashion is art for the body. I paint and create using other types of mediums all the time but fashion allows me to wear those creations. It doesn’t get much better than that.

KARINA GARZA

Do you remember when you first became aware of fashion?

Before I started preschool I spent every day with my best friend, my grandma, who made my dresses my entire childhood. She loved to sew and create things for me. As soon as I learned how to hold a needle, she taught me to sew rag dolls and their clothes. I credit my mother too, for she taught me about seasons and colors—how to coordinate, mix and match, and layer.

When it was time to shop for school clothes, she would let me choose my own outfits.

Who’s the cheerleader you envision when you design your collections?

I envision the cheerleader who is her own trendsetter—the artist herself—wearing the art she’s actually performing. He or she is a non-conformist, the one who will not settle for less than who he or she is and represents. The cheerleaders I envision are the ones who are going big or going home. They are in it to win it.

What inspired you for this year’s 2017 Purple Label Collection?

Clients with whom I’ve had Skype sessions with are a great source of inspiration. What they speak of during our process sticks to me, so, during the development of new styles, their words replay in my head. I also am active in street style and styling blogs. So people—real people—are my inspiration.

Who is your favorite Rebel and why?

Sophia Amoroso, CEO & Founder of Nasty Gal & #GirlBoss. She has said, “One of my favorite quotes is from George Bernard Shaw, ‘Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.’ I think we as a culture spend too much time looking at role models or other fascinating lives instead of spending time creating our own.”

Her comments about that quote make me feel that I don’t need to say anything more. It’s selfexplanatory. #RebelLevel is a lifestyle.

What trends from the runway this year have translated especially well to allstar cheerleading uniforms?

Mesh! Laser cuts! Graphics!

What’s a typical workday like for you?

I am one of Rebel’s remote designers, based in Colorado. So I like working from different places where I get to see people. Coffee shops are my best friends! I stay inspired all day— from the design on my latte, to my MacBook, to the people who come and go.

How would your friends describe you?

I had to reach out to my close friends and colleagues for this one. They described me as: talented, kind, a risk-taker, go-getter, caring, passionate, compassionate, and adventurous. I would have to agree. ;) Why did you choose fashion as your creative outlet?

I’ve always been an artist. As a kid I loved drawing people. My favorite part to draw was their clothing. So I would say that was the foundation. It was area of my art that I had most fun with.

What do you love most about being a Rebel Fashion Designer?

The entire Rebellion part of it! Standing up for being different. Not wanting to look like your neighbor but actually creating your own look! I have so much passion and respect for Rebel’s vision and business philosophy.

What is the most challenging part about being a designer?

To be quite honest, I can’t think of one difficult thing about it. It has been my lifestyle for as long as I can remember. It’s who I am. I eat, live, and breathe it.

What are your top three must-haves for the summer?

I can’t emphasize enough the importance of well-being and hydration. Especially when having fun in the sun! So for this question, I am going with a big water bottle (Water is Life), SPF moisturizer, and good lip balm! Well-being and health is the only kind of imitation I am interested in. I would not want to look like someone else by imitating his or her outfit. If you feel a million dollars, you will most definitely look it! The best part is to be you!

What is the method to your design process?

I start off by researching my teams. Social media plays a big role in our generation so it’s pretty simple to see a team’s inspiration with what they post on their Instagram or Facebook in representation of themselves. Or, if client opts for a Skype session, I get the perfect feel of who they are and what they are trying to self-express out on the stage!

Where do you go for inspiration?

Inspiration Is EVERYWHERE. As I mentioned previously about design being a lifestyle, I mean it 100 percent. Inspiration is in the colors painted across the skies when I travel all over the U.S. for design sessions, it’s the crackle designs on the frozen lake across my house, and the shapes the clouds and tree branches make. But, most importantly real people, and how the self-express with what they wear are my main inspiration.

Do you remember when you first became aware of fashion?

I remember going school clothes shopping and being able to picture outfits that I would want to look for at the store but never being able to find exactly what I wanted. This is when I knew I had to be a designer to create my own idea of fashion.

Who is the cheerleader you envision when you design your collections?

I envision a girl who loves to look athletic and girly at the same time, and who is not afraid to go against the grain and take rebellious risks.

What inspired you for this year’s 2017 Purple Label Collection?

My inspiration for the newest Purple Label Collection came from mixing very athletic and sporty elements with classic feminine elements found in fashion.

Who is your favorite Rebel and why?

My favorite Rebel will forever be Queen Bey, Beyonce. I love that she’s not afraid to be unapologetically herself despite negativity being thrown her way. She is #girlboss goals for me.

What trends from the runway this year have translated especially well to allstar cheerleading uniforms?

Mesh accents are really big now and fit perfectly in cheer uniforms.

Not only does it give a peekaboo look without being too revealing, but also adds an elegant touch. Simple classic lines paired with heavy embellishments are also great to give you a classic look that stands out from the rest. And finally, statement pieces such as a crazy logo detail, using alternative fabrics or crystal molds, are a great way to make a cheer uniform not only stand out but also be memorable.

What is a typical workday like for you?

The workday for me always starts with upbeat music and a cup of tea to get the creative juices flowing. When working on a uniform order I try to take into consideration what each team is asking for and also think of what I can do to take it to the next level. There’s no greater satisfaction than a team happy with what I’ve presented to them.

How would your friends describe you?

Optimistic, loyal, artistic, and kind.

Why did you choose fashion as your creative outlet?

I’ve always had clothing ideas in my head that I wasn’t seeing in stores, so I knew fashion was the place for me. I decided when I was in elementary school I wanted to be a designer.

What do you love the most about being a rebel fashion designer?

My favorite part of my job is the creative freedom. We are encouraged to go crazy and think outside the box. I love the fact that I am not restricted.

What is the most challenging part of being a designer?

The most challenging part of being a designer is being able to keep your ideas fresh and innovative. The way I combat this is finding inspiration everywhere, not just in fashion.

What are your top 3 must haves for the summer?

A cute retro-looking pair of sunglasses, bright nail polish (my go-to color is a neon coral), and embellished strappy sandals.

What is the method to your design process?

My phone is full of screenshots and pictures of things that inspire me. I find inspiration in the most random things so taking pictures is my way of keeping up with them. Anytime I need an idea that is my go to place to start. It’s just as vital as a sketchbook for me.

Where do you go to for inspiration?

Although I do find inspiration in runway fashion, a lot of times I can draw inspiration by normal everyday things. Nature, cities, movies, and art are a few of my favorite places to draw from.

ALLISON MAYES Do you remember when you first became aware of fashion?

It wasn’t until I moved to Texas because I went to a private school in California and had to wear uniforms. :/ My family moved to Texas when I was in elementary school—no more uniforms!—and I realized I could have fun with my clothes!!!

Who’s the cheerleader you envision when you design your collections?

I don’t envision a particular person, instead I try and think about the actual girls that will be wearing them, the different body types, different ages, bases vs. flyers, etc.

What inspired you for this year’s 2017 Purple Label Collection?

Well definitely the whole dreamy, Rebel in Paris idea. But really I try and concentrate on what I think is actually sellable. I want every gym from a small gym in the mid-west to Cheer Athletics to wear my designs!

Who is your favorite Rebel and why?

Britney Spears!!!! If she can make it through 2007, then I can make it through anything.

What trends from the runway this year have translated especially well to allstar cheerleading uniforms?

Athletic criss-cross lacing for sure! Shoulder cutouts and stripes.

What’s a typical workday like for you?

Busy!! Balancing new art, with art revisions, with tech packing art and any sort of special projects we have going on.

How would your friends describe you?

Weird.

Why did you choose fashion as your creative outlet?

I was into art and drawing before I was serious about fashion. I thought my creativity flowed more with fabrics than with paint.

What do you love most about being a Rebel Fashion Designer?

A large amount of my job is just designing!! Of course we have the perimeters of the lookbooks or of a certain customer, but I have so much creative freedom here!!

What is the most challenging part about being a designer?

Constantly designing something new and innovative!

What are your top three must-haves for the summer?

My cat tanks, cat eyeliner and my cats. :) What is the method to your design process?

I sort of image the vague finished design in my head first. I usually start with the neckline and front bodice area first since that is the most visible!

Where do you go for inspiration?

Everywhere!! When I sew for myself, I love drawing inspiration from the fabric. The fabric tells me what it can do and how it can drape and I start seeing the designs in my head. For Rebel, I definitely focus on what the customer requests. The customer usually gives me enough uniform inspiration ideas that I have enough to get started.

Our experience working with Rebel has been amazing from the very beginning.

Shawn has made every step of the way so easy and hassle free. They took my ideas and horrible drawings and made my dream uniform a reality. Meeting in person with a Rebel designer was the icing on the cake.

It was exhilarating to watch my idea come to life in front of my eyes and collaborating with the designer made the uniform design even more beautiful than I had originally imagined. When we received the prototype it was everything we had dreamed of and more! The quality of materials and the way the rhinestones glisten make this uniform stand out from the crowd.
