About the firm Experience of internship

The Garage Aid is a firm that believes in a holistic approach, let it be the design or the services they provide. They do Architecture, landscape, and interior design. They have in the past done majorly small-scale projects that include redevelopment projects, Luxury Villas, commercial buildings, repurposing functionality, interiors, and landscape.

The team

Principal architects: Ar.Ezra D'Souza and Ar. Giselle Ann Lobo

Senior architects: Ar Siddharth Malur, Ar Sonali Bahugini and Ar Shubham Nagarkar

Site engineer: Sunil Angadi

Intent for the internship

My main intention for the internship was to be able to develop a good skillset and to be able to understand how an architectural firm works I also wanted to work in a firm in which I could contribute to projects significantly and I had many such opportunities.

I also wanted to know the entire process of construction, from the conceptual stage to execution Along with that, I want to know how an architectural office functions, how things work on-site, and what is the architect’s role in the entire process.

Initially I was very worried as to how I would cope with the work environment, however when I started interning at the Garage AID, everyone in the team was very warm. There is no rigid hierarchy in the firm which allows everyone from senior architects to interns to contribute to projects

I also had great mentors who corrected me and helped me in my work with utmost patience. Of course, there were some days which were hard and pressurising and yet other days where I felt so motivated about architecture, but I also got a chance to understand my interests in architecture and found out my weaknesses and strengths.

Interning completely changed my perspective about architecture in the real world The amount of effort that went into even a small projects and how accuracy is key for proper execution is something I learnt through this experience.

I also had the opportunity to deal with selection and ordering of materials for interiors and coordinating with the site supervisor to make sure the work was being done as per drawings. Overall the experience gave me a reality check of how an architectural firm runs and what an architect should and should not do to make sure its smooth.

Fluted Glass

What is Fluted Glass?

Fluted glass also known as ribbed glass is a vertical textured glass. The whole glass is made of vertical stripes, which are regular and concise.

Applications:

Fluted glass is a new trend both for architects and interior designers, it has a wide range of uses:

Material feature

Fluted glass has the ability to provide privacy while allowing light to shine through.

It also does not have an overly bearing strong attribute and can thus adapt to most design styles.

Physical characteristics

1.High intensity :

Because fluted glass is pressed it's strength is much greater than ordinary glass.

2. Low breakage rate:

Due to high strength and the ribbed texture the breakage rate is comparatively lower

3. 3-D texture:

Strong visual impact and creates a better decorative impact.

4.Translucent:

Allows light without compromising with privacy like flat glass.

Limitations of use

1.Maintenance:

Apart from the great strength the texture provides, the concave and convex surfaces are difficult to clean.

2.Cost:

The fluted glass price is 200-300% than the same thickness of glass.

Thickness and sizes:

Main thicknesses: 6mm, 8mm, 10mm. 12mm can be customized.

Size: 1830x2140mm, 1830x2440mm, 3300x2140mm, 3300x2440mm. Other size can be customized.

Pricing per square feet:

200-400 Rs/sq ft

1.Door or window panels 2.Partition walls 3. Fluted glass balustrade 5. Kitchen cabinets 6. Light fixtures 5. Shower sscreens

PEACOCK HOUSE

Location: Anjuna, Bardez- Goa

Site area: 1155.05 Sq m

Total build up area: 470 Sq m ~ 40.70 %

Architect: Ezra D'Souza, Giselle Ann Lobo

The project is a luxury 5-bedroom guest the village of Anjuna.

Concept:

The aim of the architect was to give the space ability to be a part of its surroundings.

The main elements to bring in from the were 1. 2.

Visual connectivity

The aspect of light and visual connectivity achieved through multiple skylights as well length windows while the aspect of ventilation achieved through cross ventilation.

Space planning was done so as to achieve connectivity

Key design features:

The spaces are designed such that there is visual connectivity of the indoor and outdoor spaces Almost 60% of the site is left open for landscape. Being a renovation and extension project the aim was to reduce breakage and to maintain the essence of the old house. Use of skylights to avoid dark and dingy spaces like corridors.

Light Ventilation
3

Interiors:

The interiors are inspired by a modern Bali with hues inspired from the peacock feathers.

Roofing:

For the common spaces the traditional wooden frame with two layers of tiles - roof + ceiling will help with insulation.

The bedrooms have a layer of ply (along with a bitumen or aluminum sheet for waterproofing) and easier maintenance.

Old houses tend to get dark and gloomy; the introduction of skylights transforms these spaces; with the already high ceilings and thick walls bringing the spaces to life.

The extension roof matches the roof of the old house, to form a cohesive massing.

Structure:

The structure of the old house is retained as adding a few walls and creating niches in order reduce breakage.

The extension however is made of RCC incorporates mouldings like the old structure amalgamate the two.

Walls to be constructed

Walls to be demolished

Material palette:

Flooring: Granite/ Ceramic tiles

Walls: Lime plaster and paint

Windows: Wooden with fluted glass

Analysis:

Despite bringing in plenty of light, one drawback is excessive heat which is not ideal in a hot and humid environment. Some spaces are larger and not utilised to the fullest.

Considering it is a luxury guest house planning is done adequately.

Landscape:

A well thought of landscape throughout the site with tropical indigenous plants which adds to the beauty of the site.

The space between the two houses acts as a beautiful transition space. Very porous in terms of visual connectivity as well as circulative connectivity
