It is a mixed farm with 360 robot milked Holsteins. As a University farm it not only has to compete commercially but also provide facility for extensive research trials, mainly for the dairy industry, as well as a teaching hub for the agriculture students and training facility for the University’s vet school.

“There is a lot going on” explains Joe Greenfield, who manages the estate alongside Dairy manager Nigel Armstrong. “We have to manage so many aspects above and beyond a normal farm; it is a living classroom, a training facility and a research station. It is all in the public eye… the farming is actually the easy bit!”

With so much going on Joe doesn’t like to mess around when it comes to dealing with suppliers he goes onto explain:“I want good relationships with helpful people that provide cost effective solutions and can also meet the demands of education procurement systems.The sales department has been superb from tender to after-service.With service, I have not had a bad lad out in the yard and there have been a few occasions when I have had stoppages late on in the weekend and they have still been able to get someone out within a couple of hours to get me going again.”

“The parts service is on another level, it is fast, cost effective and keeps me running, vital when so many highly scientific trials depend on the farming operation for consistency of feeding and forage” adds Joe. The farm runs six John Deere machines including four 6R tractors and an R962i sprayer but isn’t fazed about RVT becoming a New Holland dealer in November explains Joe: “Brands come and go, I’ve driven them all over the years, what matters is the professional relationship to meet my financial and procurement targets so that will be the key factor in what I buy next”.
