The First Lady of Las Vegas – Helen J. Stewart

Helen J. Stewart settled in Las Vegas in 1882. At that time, she was the first and only female resident in Las Vegas, NV. Helen was a female pioneer in Las Vegas and truly paved the path for generations of women in the west to come. Helen J. Stewart was born in Springfield, Illinois on April 16, 1854. Hiram Wiser, her father, moved the family to Sacramento, California where she went to public school and eventually college in Woodland, California.

She married Archibald Stewart In April of 1873 and the young couple moved to Pony Springs near Pioche, Nevada. Helen’s husband, Archibald operated a freighting business near Pioche, a wood ranch, a cattle ranch where he also raised vegetables, hauled mining equipment, as well as other businesses he ventured into.

As a successful businessman, Stewart loaned $5,000 in gold to Octavius D. Gass and eventually gained the Las Vegas ranch as collateral for the loan upon default. It was said that Gass had been trying to sell the ranch for years and rumored that he may have never had intended on

ever paying back the debt.

The growing family moved to Las Vegas in April of 1882. They took possession of what was called at the time the “Los Vegas Rancho”.

Helen wasn’t particularly fond of the isolated ranch life in Pioche and Archibald told her they would only be in Las Vegas for 2 years. She started to embrace and enjoy the constant flow of travelers in Las Vegas, though.

She desired female friends and feminine companionship; therefore, she was said to be overly joyed when a new group of travelers had women in their groups for the female camaraderie. Helen was however concerned upon initial arrival of not having another female present when she gave birth and the absence of educational opportunities for her children. They settled into the 960-acre ranch and started to do what they set out to do – make it successful and profitable. Archibald continued to travel and supply produce and farm animals to miners in El Dorado Canyon. He was gone for a few days when a ranch handler confronted Helen, told her he was quitting and demanded his final wages. Helen declined and told the ranch hand, Schyler Henry, that he would have to wait until Archibald’s return so he could adequately

Helen’s children and she became very close with. He became the first schoolteacher in the Las Vegas School District in Lincoln County before his unfortunate passing in 1894. He was also buried in the families 4-acre plot.

She sold the 1,834 acres of the ranch along with the rights to the water to the Los Angeles and Salt Lake Railroad in 1902 and moved into a newer home in the growing community of Las Vegas, where she had many additional contributions.

In 1886, Frank Roger Stewart arrived in Las Vegas, with coincidentally no relation to the late Archie Stewart.

He and his partner operated a post office and general store. He helped Helen as a ranch handler and would entertain guests and travelers often in the wine cellar.

Helen and Frank’s relationship grew into more than an employee work relationship/friendship and in 1903, into marriage between the couple, along with a prenuptial agreement that would allow Helen and her children to retain their assets. Travelers would often leave messages for those coming into town for Helen to give them upon their arrival. And in 1893, Stewart was named the first postmaster of the “Los Vegas” postal office. The incorrect spelling was an attempt to not confuse the post office with mail for Las Vegas, New Mexico. She became the 1st woman elected to the Clark County School District’s Board of Trustees, donated land for the Las Vegas Grammar School,

the 1st public school that would be attended by Native American students from the Southern Paiute Indian Tribe and Colony. She maintained and still maintains to be a vital piece of Las Vegas history in business, social, political and educational aspects. Today, there is a public school named after Helen J. Stewart, which I’ve had the pleasure of volunteering and it’s an incredibly awarding experience and school; not solely based on what you learn about Helen and her historic and noble native roots, but the school is a special education school that serves students with significant intellectual disabilities and other secondary disabilities who range in age from 6-22 years old.

If you’ve ever walked the ground of Helen J. Stewart, you will be pleased to know that the resources provided to these students in our local community that have significant disabilities are met with specialized instruction in daily living, functional academics, vocational, communication, behavioral, and transitional needs in their large facility which boasts an indoor swimming pool, a barn, sensory room, computer lab, daily living skills room, and a greenhouse facility.

These facilities are used to enhance student learning and to develop life-long skills and interests that can be generalized to the community in which they live. The school also helps students with communication, and life skills goals.

She stated not much about the incident to anyone including Archibald; but stated that the ranch hand had a “black-hearted slanderer’s tongue.” Upon Archibald’s return to the ranch, it wasn’t long before a short rest and meal that he was saddled back up and on his way to the Kiel Ranch. Owner, Conrad Kiel was present along with Schyler Henry and Hank Parrish, who were said to frequent the ranch with other unsavory characters and outlaws.

A gunfight took place and Archie Stewart was shot and killed in 1884.

Message was sent to Helen and she was on her way to the Kiel Ranch, which is located near where the cross streets of Losee Road and Carey Ave. meet currently in N. Las Vegas. She helped to load her late husband’s body and he was buried on their land in a family plot with four acres the following day. At this time Helen was pregnant with the couple’s 5th child. After some legal battles, the probate was finalized in 1885 and she and her children owned the entire land. She sought to sell the land but to no prevail and then in 1889, speculation started to occur that there was a possible railroad in the works. She continued to run the ranch with the help of her father, Hiram and Helen started purchasing property adjacent to the ranch. She eventually became the largest landowner in all of Lincoln County, Nevada. Helen now felt better about remaining living in Las Vegas, especially after the arrival of a teacher of Mr. James Ross Megarrigle, who agreed to tutor

I recently spoke with Gresham about his development as an artist, his approach to the craft of writing, and his current and future projects.

The absurd and vital humanism that distinguishes his entire oeuvre as a novelist and screenwriter has its roots in his rough-and-tumble Texas childhood.

Suburban Borderlands Gresham grew up in southeast Texas just north of Houston in a mid-sized town that straddled the divide between suburban and rural. “There was a cow pasture right across the street from my house,” says Gresham. That boundless threshold served as fertile ground for Gresham and his friends, an energetic group of boys who reached their teens in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

They loved watching movies, either at the theatre or on VHS. Over-the-top action-adventure or sci-fi films were their favorites: Freaked (1993), Speed (1994) Independence Day (1996) Godzilla (1998). Soon they began attempting remakes of their favorite scenes, or even parodies of entire films.

Those early forays into filmmaking were seminal for Gresham as an emerging artist. “We didn’t get any parental interference on anything; we were what you might call ‘a little bit wild.’ A part of me thinks that that was important. In my adult life, I’ve done what I’ve wanted to do. I’ve pursued my dreams. Without my childhood experiences, I don’t know that I’d be able to do that. What we did together cultivated my confidence. It gave me strength to follow the next idea, wherever it might lead—to develop it and see it through to completion.”

Dreams of Writing What Gresham most wanted to do was script a film that would get produced, but the path to success was not clear. After high school, he wrote movies and music and had the notion that he would sell a screenplay and leap to acclaim. Writers and directors who had succeeded young provided exhilarating examples: Steven Spielberg, Christopher Nolan, Paul Thomas Anderson, Richard Linklater.

But as time passed, it seemed that youthful success would not be his. Self-doubt crept in.

Gresham stepped away from his ambitions and got a succession of jobs involving manual labor: plumbing supply, an air conditioning warehouse. He didn’t write for two years.

But then one fateful evening he found the script for a horror movie he’d penned and sat down and read it. He thought, “This isn’t too bad, but it feels like a book, not a script.” And in that instant, he decided to begin work on a novel. He hunched over the desktop computer he

had on the floor of his tiny Austin apartment, and started writing. He cranked out twelve thousand words that very night.

And then he set about reinventing himself not just as a screenwriter, but as a writer.

MFA Program at UNLV

He thought, “No one will take me seriously unless I have a degree,” so he attended Texas State University. At TSU, he took a graduate-level creative writing class and his professor, Deborah Monroe, encouraged him to continue his education, telling him that his writing was good enough that he “could and should” apply to an MFA program.

Inspired by a biography of David Foster Wallace written by D.T. Max, Gresham applied to San Diego State University, where he was accepted into the MFA program in Creative Writing. During his time at SDSU, screenwriting was on the back burner for Gresham. “Prose fiction was my thing,” he says. He honed his unconventional approach to constructing offbeat, intensive narratives, and produced his first novel, Heck, Texas, published in 2020. It paints a vivid, darkly humorous portrait of a divided town and its inhabitants. Werner Herzog has called it an “unruly book” whose anger ingeniously expresses “the mood of our times.”

Perhaps more importantly, Heck, Texas is a potent example of Gresham tapping into the rich experiential vein of his East Texas upbringing, just as William Faulkner famously employed an apocryphal Mississippi county, Yoknapatawpha, to plumb the depths of Southern life.

While studying creative writing at SDSU, Gresham started working on a multi-character film script called Austin, Texas. When classmates and friends responded positively, he submitted it to the Nicholl Fellowships, a major international screenwriting competition. It got into the top 20% and earned Gresham a spot in CineStory, a screenwriting retreat. That was another turning point.

“I need to get back into this,” Gresham told himself. He started splitting his time between prose and screenwriting.

With one MFA under his belt, Gresham found himself yearning for another—this time focused on screenwriting. That is when he discovered the Master of Fine Arts program in Writing for Dramatic Media in the Department of Film at UNLV. “I searched for programs that would allow me to immerse myself in screenwriting. I love the idea that this program pushes its students to produce as many completed scripts as possible.”

Gresham also appreciates the expert mentorship he’s received in the Department of Film, particularly from Professor Sean Clark, the Graduate Coordinator, and Professor Charles Burmeister. “I learn more in 5 minutes with Sean than in any other screenwriting class I’ve ever taken.

He trusts ideas and our ability to run with them. He’s very into ‘you do your thing and I’m going to help you.’ And Charles—he absolutely cracked open television for me. I did not understand it.

After one or two lectures, I had grasped the ‘equation of TV’ and was able to craft an effective pilot.”

The origins of Fix Daddy—as a screenplay—can be traced to Gresham’s first semester at UNLV. Fix Daddy’s initial narrative was loosely inspired by My Life (1993), a feature-length film in which Michael Keaton and Nicole Kidman play a couple expecting their first child. They unexpectedly and tragically learn that he has terminal cancer, and that the only way he’ll be able to communicate with their

corders, and no shortage of ideas for their next masterpiece. He’d declare, “Let’s do this thing!” and they’d jump into action, pulling in their core group plus any other friends they could recruit. Their epics included a remake of the entire finale of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) and a 25-minute Reservoir Dogs (1992) parody called “Reservoir Dolls,” a twisted web of blackmail and deceit in which a demented Mr. Blonde tortures a Tickle Me Elmo plush toy.

unborn child is by recording video messages. The film’s concluding scene of the son watching a tape from his dad made a strong impression on Gresham.

What if the only way a child knows their parent is through pre-recorded tapes? Intrigued by this proposition, Gresham began working on a novel that explored media influence and identity. He got about 90 pages in, but it wasn’t going well. He decided to reconceptualize it as a screenplay, and to start from scratch. He pitched the idea in FILM 722, the Graduate Screenwriting Seminar, in the fall of 2018.

Gresham describes Fix Daddy as a “raised by wolves” scenario. If a child is raised by wolves, they believe the wolf is their parent. A baby duck imprints on the first creature it meets as its mother. What if a boy imprints on a television as his father?

It’s a premise that leads to absurdity, which Gresham relishes. “I like to let the absurdity be the humor. I make moments that are directly ridiculous but presented ‘straight.’” That kind of ironic gravitas is both the charm and beauty of Fix Daddy, and Gresham deftly employs it to confront our reliance upon technology for maintaining everyday relationships and even our sense of self.

David, the hero of Gresham’s tale, is looking for love and connection inside a lonely existence. How does technology both comfort and limit him? Gresham pushes his character to step from a cocoon of safety into the “real” world, a painful yet ultimately rewarding journey. “With technology as our buffer, we risk nothing,” argues Gresham. “In face-to-face communications, we are at risk. We are vulnerable. What we say—and what we hear from others—holds weight.”

The first person to read a complete draft of Fix Daddy was V, Gresham’s life partner and a published poet with a book of celestial poetry dealing with the struggle for identity in the face of eternity, In Stories We Thunder, forthcoming in 2022. “They are always very supportive and encouraging of my work,” says Gresham. As V finished reading Fix Daddy, “I walked in on them crying.” That reaction was pivotal for Gresham; it gave him confidence that David’s narrative arc, though preposterous, packs emotional power.

Fix Daddy’s sharply humorous, poignant take on the values and dangers of communication technology has arguably been made even more timely by the COVID-19 pandemic, which has isolated many of us in our homes, limiting our interaction with others to emails, social media posts, and video conferencing apps.

As we struggle to maintain and build our personal relationships during this trying time, as we ask ourselves what our COVID-19 hibernation has taken from us and what possibilities it may have created, Fix Daddy offers a brilliantly conceived and executed vision for retaining and enriching our humanity.

On the Horizon After the major recognition of a Humanitas prize, the looming question for any recipient is, “What’s next?”

To date, Gresham has had success as both a novelist and a screenwriter. “The form I employ depends on the story I’m trying to tell,” he explains. “With prose, I can go in whatever direction I want, and I can tell everyone everything. With screenwriting, I need to consider what is filmable.”

His big writing influences are virtuosic, inscrutable figures: Thomas Pynchon, Don DeLillo, Janicza Bravo, Charlie Kauffman. Like them, he enjoys putting peculiar characters in unorthodox, intense situations. “I’m always going to do something like that. I want to write about characters that people may not relate to in their day-to-day experience but can connect to on an emotional level.”

For aspiring screenwriters, Gresham emphasizes the importance of reading and watching everything. “Watching movies is something we should do all the time. If you’re writing movies and not watching them, what are you doing? And read. Reading is just as important as watching movies because you learn language. Good writing is essential to a good story.”

He’s into violence, not as a sensational device but as the harbinger of sudden change that characters must confront. “I don’t like to preach,” Gresham asserts. “I like to present extreme situations and have characters and audience members explore their ethical framework.” Through uncomfortable moments, he believes, we can find our moral ground and clarify our values and principles.

In every waking moment—and even in his dreams—Gresham pursues his craft. “I am a writer. I write, whether it is prose or screenplays. That’s all I do. I write.”

The volume and range of Gresham’s work in the pipeline lends credence to that statement and makes him an attractive prospect for literary agents in New York and talent agencies in Hollywood. He has aspirations to be published by a big press and to direct one of his own scripts, perhaps someday soon.

Sunflower is a speculative sci-fi absurdist novel that he’s been writing for several years. A satire of cinematic storytelling about a veteran film projectionist and a millennial screenwriter who discover a screenplay that predicts the end of the world, it features an intermission that is 21 pages of the same sentence.

He’s also scripting an LGBTQ revenge acid western about a mute artist battling a town of religious zealots called Sometimes the Devil Wins; a 70s-style action thriller about an anything-goes errand man named “Get” who teams up with a special effects makeup-artist-turned- professional-thief in order to stop a military-trained serial killer called “Get Gone”; a coming-ofage dramedy about a music-obsessed girl told through four vignettes from her life called Her Song; an absurdist low-budget monster movie called DAM! about an asteroid that turns a harmless lake fish into an ever-mutating beast that terrorizes a small town; and a TV pilot called Jack Rabbit he’s co-authoring with writing partner Kurt Kroeber about an actor who desperately wants to be famous and wakes up as a cartoon bunny.

“But,” says Gresham with a wink in his eye, “My real secret weapon is Cat Night, a screenplay about a small town trying to survive until the sun rises when a lunar phenomenon causes every feline on Earth to become ravenous for human flesh.”

“Ravenous” may be the best word to describe Gresham, a voracious reader and writer who will not stop, who simply cannot stop, because writing, for him, is life.

All the world is his stage, and he’s just getting started.

Austin, Texas, another project that hearkens back to Gresham’s East Texas upbringing, is a script that he describes as his “Crash and Magnolia rip-off.” It’s a shifting mosaic of interlinked characters experiencing failure, desperation, violence, and redemption over the course of one night in Austin. At the center of it all is a bag of cash, a lottery ticket, and a kidnapping gone wrong. “If I could find an interested producer,” says Gresham, “I’d be ready to direct this film tomorrow.”

s a local bar owner in Las Vegas, in early March of 2020, Erica Harvey started creating a plan for the shutdown after watching other major cities and how they were pivoting during the beginning phase of the pandemic. She added online ordering to their website with delivery options which she knew would help keep some of her staff

employed. She also hired some to do cleaning, landscaping and other odd jobs, taking out a loan to cover payroll for 2 weeks. At that time, she wasn’t aware that they would be getting extra unemployment and she attempted to navigate the unknown keeping the best interest of her employees on the forefront of her mind.

In late March, “since the grocery stores were empty, I ordered food for my staff from the bars vendors’ and made care packages for them with enough groceries to last them a month. I also made and delivered 50 care packages for the elderly in town so they wouldn’t have to risk their health to go grocery shopping,” said Erica.

Fast forward to June 2020: Erica hadn’t paid herself since February, and she knew that even when the bars reopened, she wouldn’t be able to continue to pay herself what she could prior to the shutdown. “So, I sold my house, and used the money to pay off some of the bars’ debt, and I moved into a small rental.” Erica’s daughter also left for the army to be a combat medic at this same time, so it was a highly challenging and emotional time for her.

In July 2020, Erica decided to get her real estate license as a second source of income. During a camping trip in August in Utah, Erica was informed that she would have to pay some pretty significant outstanding fees, or her business license would be suspended. “I hadn’t had any revenue in months, so I ended up having to take cash out of the buildings to pay it. At this point, I had taken out 3 loans and sold my house to save the bars, so I admitted defeat and shut them down permanently and walked away. Telling almost 50 people that they didn’t have jobs anymore was the most heart-wrenching thing I’ve ever had to do.”

Erica started her career in real estate in September, and she quickly worked her way up as a top producing new agent in her office. By January 2021, she was tied for second place in listings as an individual agent for her entire office.

Unfortunately, right as things were finally starting to look up, Erica lost her best friend when he died unexpectedly. With grit and determination, Erica continued to work hard and rise above the challenges she faced in 2020.

“Needless to say, it was a rough year, but I came out on top somehow.”

Erica continued on with perseverance and remained grateful to continue to grow and excel in her new career doing something that she thoroughly enjoys and helping locals secure their American dreams as homeowners. To say that she remained strong is an understatement. Erica rose to the challenge, worked harder and harder to overcome the defeat that she and so many others experienced last year.

Right away, I thought to myself, ‘no way am I going to have anything permanent on my face!’ Just the thought of something not going right and being there permanently was enough for me not to consider that option whatsoever. However, I started looking at her eyebrow technician’s work and admiring her flawless eyebrows she did for tons of clients, as they say a picture is worth a thousand words. So, I contacted her eyebrow master and scheduled a consult. I still was a little apprehensive and wasn’t sure if I was actually going to get the procedure done, but from the minute I met her, she put me at ease, explaining the entire process. Paula is originally from Brazil and she explained that Brazilian women have been using this process for hundreds and hundreds of years. Permanent tattooing, microblading and brow lamenting has apparently been a thing in the US for years, being brought over from the original techniques used by beautiful Brazilian women.

I went ahead and scheduled the treatment and Paula showed me how she measures and temporarily marks where she will work on your eyebrows to ensure symmetry. She thoroughly explained the process and what to expect. I was completely in LOVE with the way she shaped them and the way they looked. Although it’s not a medical “health treatment,” I didn’t realize how important eyebrows are to your overall aesthetic look and let’s of how they look. Some women may realize that their brows could use some work, while others are completely unaware of how this treatment would enhance their overall look and leave them more confident than they were prior to the treatment. Now, let’s face it… We’ve all seen these victims of atrocious eyebrows and there’s no nice or easy way to tell someone they should consider getting theirs fixed. If I took things personal when my friend suggested the treatment to me, I may have never experienced what I now believe is completely worthwhile and I’m a strong believer that if you look in the mirror and are unhappy whatsoever about your eyebrows, you should at least book a consult and draw your own conclusion about the treatments available. Paula is a phenomenal eyebrow master, and I can assure you, you will be glad you did!

“There is no Plan B, there is only Plan A,” says human force of nature Gabriella “Gabi” Walters, with an infectious grin and an energy so calming it’s like a gentle breeze on a warm spring day. Working at a breakneck pace in 8 short years she has made Inferno Hot Pilates a global brand on every continent, except Antarctica, leading one to believe Plan B doesn’t exist simply because there hasn’t been time for it.

Her journey began in Budapest, Hungary, where as a child she attended athletic school enduring twice daily workouts focusing on running, pole vaulting and diving to fulfill her dream of one day becoming an athlete. Reluctantly giving into her mother’s request that she get a “real” job, she took 4 years off to attend school for finance, but her true passion for fitness won over and shortly after graduation, she moved to Las Vegas to train for bodybuilding competitions. Unfortunately, it was not in the cards, and after sustaining a knee injury shortly before her first competition, fate closed 1 door on 1 dream, but opened a brilliant 1 to her future when Pilates was prescribed for her rehabilitation. The Pilates principle, fusion of mind and body, not only helped with healing, it became a passion she knew she had to pursue. Once certified, Gabi was an instructor at a local hot Pilates studio where she perfected her method, with the vision of Inferno never far from her thoughts. Eventually along with her best friend, biggest inspiration and now husband, Jay, she opened a tiny studio with a temporary portable heater where she taught 6 classes a day, 7 days a week for the first 2 years while building a clientele. To bring some relief to her stressful schedule, she started training instructors for her studio; before long the world was knocking at her door for teacher training as well and to date, she has traveled over 500,000 miles to certify nearly 3,000 instructors in over 250 Inferno Hot Pilates studios! All this while expanding to a larger location after outgrowing her original 1, this time

of her fitness passions, all with instructed classes for safety, variety and balance to her members.

Even a pandemic couldn’t slow her down! “There are no obstacles” she says with a will of steel, and within hours of the city shutting for COVID, she offered classes online and continues to do so for those who wish to social distance at home.

After all of this, when asked what’s next, she just flashed that megawatt smile and said, “world domination!” Considering there’s only 1 continent left for her to conquer, I’d say Antarctica, you’re about to get Inferno Hot!

Jodie was awarded German Radio’s Newcomer of the Year Award in 1984. That same year she was selected to represent (then) West Germany in the Yamaha World Popular Song Festival in Tokyo, Japan. She was selected from over 3500 entries from around the world with a song she co-wrote. That song, “Don’t Break the Silence”, won Outstanding Song Award and 2nd Place. The song was also considered for the movie White Nights losing out to Phil Collins “Separate Lives”.

Some other top names that competed in the festival during its 30-year existence are Céline Dion, Bryan Adams, Bonnie Tyler, and Cissy Houston.

In 1988 in Rosbach Germany she was asked to sing with her twin sister Linda on a track titled “Girl You Know It’s True” by a new, unknown group called Milli Vanilli. When the single took off Jodie and her sister went back in the studio and recorded vocals on 22 tracks for the group’s first album “All or Nothing”. The album sold more than 46 million copies and generated 3 number one hits on Billboard’s Top 100. The biggest selling single, “Girl I’m Gonna Miss You”, a duet, sold more than 6 million copies in the US alone. The group won a Grammy and three American Music Awards. In the fall of 1990 Milli Vanilli went back in the studio and recorded another 23 tracks for their second release “Keep on Running”. Jodie was awarded numerous Platinum and Gold records for her work on both releases. She has also worked with top European artists and world stars including Michael Jackson.

Her Marketing career began in Germany in the 1980’s with her music and her cocktail bar, Bogarts. Her lucrative career brought her back to the US, the San Francisco bay area and Las Vegas where her family has lived for more than 40 years. In 2004 Jodie accepted the position of Call Center Supervisor and eventually Marketing Manager of Genesis Entertainment, Inc. in Las Vegas dba nightclubs.com, travelnice.com, vegascasinos.com and 200 other websites. Nightclubs.com merged with What’s On Magazine and Highway Radio in 2009 and Jodie was promoted to Director of Marketing, Social Media, and Public Relations. In addition, she had 2 weekly radio shows for entertainment and nightlife on Highway Radio. These shows were heard by hundreds of thousands of listeners in Nevada, California, Arizona and Utah for more than 5 years.

Jodie volunteered side by side with Nevada Wild Fest and Highway Radio to benefit The Lili Claire Foundation for more Magazine and Highway Radio to NWF and New Vista Community Wine/Beer Walks for more than 3 years. Jodie volunteered as a Catechist for 9 years, both in Northern California and in Las Vegas. She now volunteers her time for the Clark County Museum.

In 2018 Jodie was inducted into the Nevada Women’s Hall of Fame.

In 2017 Jodie was honored with the Women’s Chamber of Commerce Nevada Entertainer of the Year Award; In 2014 Jodie was voted one of Las Vegas’ Top 100 Women of Influence.

Yet, the Alpha female’s dating life can be challenging leaving some of us Alpha females wondering what’s wrong with me? Trust me, you are more than enough. There is a shift in times and roles and now both men and women need some reevaluating and balancing.

I asked some men the pros of dating an Alpha female and they shared that they loved the fact they are so independent and that she goes after what she wants. They perceive it as being confident, sexy and attractive. It is her natural leadership qualities that bring out the best in people, including him. She attracts and complements him. She does not want anything or need anything from him except great conversation and quality time together.

She will elevate him even more. Being with an Alpha female means leveling up.

CONS for Dating the Alpha Female

What they didn’t like about dating the Alpha female, is how their intrinsic traits of being competitive, controlling, and aggressive can result in clashing of power, control, and even egos. Also, they don’t like being on a leash or always having to answer to her. There is no such thing as doing nothing and not progressing in life. You must be ambitious and want to level up.

As an Alpha female, I know that we have high expectations of ourselves and therefore have high expectations of those around us. We tend to

help elevate those around us but struggle when it’s time to turn their business savvy mindset off and just relax. What I have learned is that you become a greater force to be reckoned with when you learn to be less controlling, and without lowering standards, exuded more compassion while being seen as less judgmental. There is also power in learning when to listen more, when to ask engaging questions, and when to speak less.

Furthermore, in a conversation with some Alpha men, I learned that the very thing they fell in love with was the thing that pushed them away. My initial response was that these men do not know what they want. They desire the independent woman; however, they struggle with understanding her and what she needs.

Things that Alpha women need in a relationship: • • • • • • • • •

Respect.

Trust.

Their Independence. Don’t try and control or place them in a box.

Someone Who Can Keep Up...

Need to Be Challenged. A partner to an Alpha woman needs to be able to hold his own...

Need to Laugh.

Need Someone who is Informed. They must be able to learn from you.

Need Someone with Tact.

Need to Be Called Out When Necessary. **PLEASE** do this wisely and when needed or they will lose their respect for you.

What I have researched and learned through experience is that Alpha females should do these things to improve and enhance their relationships:

Point out what their partner did right as this will boost their ego.

Complain less about what they are doing wrong as this can emasculate their partner and strip them from their confidence. Know that their partner values their opinion above others.

Don’t tear them down.

Learn to ask and rely on their partner and know that there is more than one way to handle things.

Instead of speaking a directive to their partner, ask non-threatening questions, listen and learn to comprmise more.

Make your partner laugh.

Be feminine as even Alpha males are attracted to femininity.

Just know that being with an Alpha female can be liberating as it can relieve the pressure of always havingto handle everything. She is with you because she wants to be with you, not because she needs you. You can worry less about her because she can take care of herself, and she is extremely loyal to the one she loves.

Crime Victims’ Rights Week calls on citizens, community leaders, law enforcement and judicial representatives to remember victims of crime across America and provide them a voice and consideration through the judicial process, in these extraordinary times as we face the COVID-19 outbreak, and in brighter days to come.

Here in Nevada, we were proud to see residents vote YES for Marsy’s Law/Question 1 in November of 2018, which solidified Constitutional rights for crime victims statewide.

Just like the suspects in criminal cases, Nevada victims of crime now have the right to a protected voice, information and

consideration during the judicial process, from an arrest through the defendant’s release. A statewide list of RESOURCES and assistance organizations can be found on the Mary’s Law for NV website.

• Right to notice of all public proceedings in the case.

• Right to be reasonably heard, upon request, at all public proceedings regarding the case.

• Right to reasonably confer with the prosecuting agency, upon request, regarding the case.

• Right to full and timely restitution.

History of Marsy’s Law The effort is named after Marsalee “Marsy” Nicholas who was murdered by her ex-boyfriend in California in 1983. A week later he was released pending his court proceedings and went face to face with the victim’s family, who had no idea he was out of jail. Today her family is working to secure a voice and protection for victims’ and their families, nationwide. Individual Marsy’s Law measures have now been approved in 12 states including Nevada. Nearly 140-million people, or 40-percent of all Americans, now receive protected rights under Marsy’s Law.
