Where History Lives Nestled midst oak trees dripping with Spanish moss, majestic pecan trees, and the mighty Brazos River, West Columbia is a great place to call home. Historical sites and markers tell the history of the land, where Texas was born. Located about an hour from Houston and just minutes from the Gulf of Mexico, West Columbia provides a gateway to “big city” fun and entertainment as well as the lure of the Gulf with its many saltwater activities. Locally, residents take pleasure in the slower-paced lifestyle of golfing, fishing, sport activities, local festivals and events. A city rich in Texas history, West Columbia is also home to the Varner Hogg State Historic Site; Veteran’s Memorial Park; Replica of the First Capitol of the Republic of Texas; Columbia Historical Museum; Rosenwald School; Capitol of Texas Park; Old Columbia Cemetery; Underwood House; Sweeny Waddy Cabin; Nash Prairie Preserve; site of the Dance Gun Shop; Aycock Crews House (Bed & Breakfast) and Stephen F. Austin Death Site.
We invite you to experience all that West Columbia has to offer—
it’s all here!

with a Christian emphasis.
LCA offers a strong academic program with individualized instruction using the Accelerated Christian Education curriculum. Students are given a Diagnostic Test prior to enrollment to determine their performance level. They are then placed in appropriate curriculum for their level. Each student progresses at his or her own pace, placing emphasis on quality rather than quantity. The student masters the material he or she is studying before moving on to new concepts, which provides for a higher retention of information. Because of the low student to staff ratio, each student receives individualized assistance. The current staff members, who have been involved with the school since its founding in 1996, serve as guides to help the students learn more easily and efficiently. For more information, please call 979-345-3354 or stop by the office at The Lighthouse Church, 501 West Brazos, West Columbia.

Our Heritage West Columbia is a community rich in early Texas history. The first duly elected Congress of the Republic of Texas met at Columbia on October 3, 1836. The provisional government had been forced to move many times after the Texans declared their independence from Mexico on March 2, 1836 at Washington on the Brazos. The temporary capitol was first established at Harrisburg on March 22, but less than a month, the officials were forced to leave to escape Santa Ana’s troops. The government fled to Galveston just one day before Santa Ana arrived at Harrisburg with intentions to burn it down. A few weeks after moving to Galveston, the government once again moved to Velasco, on the Texas Gulf Coast. Facilities at Galveston and Velasco were inadequate, so in July an interim President David G. Burnett called for an election and ratification of the constitution, and decreed that the first duly elected legislature of the Republic of Texas would convene at Columbia on the first Monday in October, 1836. Columbia was chosen as the capitol for two reasons: there were greater facilities available, and the early newspapers, The Telegraph, along with the Texas Register, were there. Columbia had served as a seat of justice for the municipality of Columbia under Mexico and had a number of buildings, including a large hotel, offices, and some log cabins. Columbia was quite crowded while it was the capitol. There was such an influx of people that the Congress voted to move the capitol to Houston in 1837. Historians generally agree that this first Congress accomplished a great deal. They ratified the Constitution, appointed committees, provided for the Army and Navy, provided protection from the Indians, created a judiciary, a postal department, a land office, and established a financial system.
The Columbia Rosenwald School The Columbia Rosenwald School served the African-American children in East Columbia from 1921-1948. The one-teacher school was constructed with the assistance of the Rosenwald School Fund created by Sears Roebuck CEO Julius Rosewald and Booker T. Washington of the Tuskegee Institute. Over 5, 300 Rosenwald Schools were built across the rural South: over 580 in Texas. The Columbia Rosenwald School is one of 40 still in existence in Texas. It was rescued by the Museum after being used for decades as a hay barn, moved into West Columbia behind the Museum and officially opened for tours in October 2009. Tours are by appointment only. 22

Columbia Historical Museum In 1950 a beautiful bank made of stone and marble was built in West Columbia. It was a building like no other in the area, sitting on a prominent corner in downtown West Columbia. When it became available for sale, Mrs. Emma Womack visited the City Council and described how it could be used for a museum and why it needed to be a museum to showcase Historic West Columbia. There had not had a museum up to that point and, as the First Capital of the Republic of Texas, all agreed one was needed, so the City leased the beautiful, well-located building to the Museum. A Board of Directors was elected, the 501 3 c 3 status was established and the hard work began. Much clean-up and repair was necessary to present this bank/museum to the public. When citizens realized what was happening, beautiful and important artifacts ranging as far back as the Texas Revolutionary Period were brought to the Museum and it became obvious what was to be the story the Museum wanted to tell. Even papers and documents from the early years were loaned or donated. The mission statement was written and it gave direction to this group of volunteers. The purpose of the Museum would be to bring better understanding and appreciation of the rich history The purpose of the Museum would of West and East Columbia with an be to bring better understanding emphasis on the families that helped settle and develop this part of Texas, and appreciation of the rich history home to many of the original 300 of West and East Columbia with an settlers who came up the Brazos with emphasis on the families that helped Stephen F.th Austin in the first quarter of the 19 century.
settle and develop this part of Texas, home to many of the original 300 settlers who came up the Brazos with Stephen F. Austin in the first quarter of the 19th century.
Special areas would showcase the five areas of commerce important to West Columbia’s early days: the Brazos River with cargo and passenger boats; farming of cotton, cane and rice; ranching; and oil. Displays would reflect the tools, the toys, the weapons, as well as activities and clothes and items such as beautiful dishes and other items necessary for life. Today, the Museum is still expanding and honors our military, fire departments, doctors, and events important to our area. The recent addition of the Columbia Rosenwald School has brought new pride and significance to our area. Investor Directory and Newcomer Guide

Honoring Our Veterans On Veteran’s Day, 2003, Veteran’s Memorial Park was dedicated to, and in honor of all veterans who have served our Country since the Revolutionary War. Three plazas, named “Duty”, “Honor”, and “Country”, display black granite pavers with the names of former and active service men and women. A special plaza honors the memory of the “West of the Brazos” veterans who have been killed in the line of duty, prisoners of war, and those missing in action. A project of the American Legion, Mattson-Ringgold Post 503, the park is located on Fourteenth Street in West Columbia between the American Legion Hall and the Replica of the First Capitol of the Republic of Texas. Visitors are welcome to view Veteran’s Memorial Park at any time: 24-hours a day, all year. To purchase a granite paver or for more information on the park, contact Mr. Sandy Weems at 979-345-5777. 24

Republic of Texas Around the year 1833, Leman Kelsey built a story-and-a-half clapboard structure near this location. When Columbia became Capitol of the Republic of Texas in 1836, the building was one of two which housed the newly formed government. The First Republic of Texas Congress convened in Columbia. Here Sam Houston took office as President and Stephen F. Austin as Secretary of State. In 1837 the government moved to Houston. The 1900 Storm destroyed the original Capitol building, but the replica is open for tours by appointment only. For tour arrangements or more information, please call West Columbia Chamber of Commerce at 979-345-3921.

San Jacinto Festival The San Jacinto Day Festival began in 1953 when the First Capitol Study Club of West Columbia sponsored a historical pageant of Brazoria County titled “Song of The Brazos.” This first pageant in this first festival was a historical tour and a “Green Back Tea” was held at the Varner-Hogg Plantation. In 1954, “The Belle of the Brazos” contest and a Grand Ball were added to the celebration. Also that year, Miss Ima Hogg gave permission for tours of the Varner-Hogg Plantation. In April of 1954 the San Jacinto Day Festival was formally incorporated to promote youth welfare in West Columbia, Texas, and the surrounding area, and to present an annual show, festival and/or exhibit featuring and perpetuating the history of Brazoria County, Texas in music, pageantry and story. The corporate charter was subsequently forfeited in September, 1965. The festival was celebrated from 1953-1956, and was not celebrated again until 1971, when a group of locals and organizations revived the celebration. Since 1971, the festival has been celebrated each year. The original events are still featured, but each year new and exciting events are added. Subsequent to the 1983 celebration, sponsorship of the event was assumed by the West Columbia Chamber of Commerce. The San Jacinto Day Festival was one of the sponsoring organizations that helped build the replica of the first capitol of the Republic of Texas. The dedication of the replica was held during the 1977 celebration with Governor Dolph Briscoe officiating. Other dedications held in conjunction with the festival were the town park, the Underwood Home, and many others. Thanks to the help of many people who worked very hard, we are able to celebrate this historical event. 32
