Welcome To Eagle Lake, Texas Greetings, On behalf of the Chamber of Commerce, Mayor and City Council, Welcome to Eagle Lake!

We have been known for decades as the “Goose Hunting Capital of the World,” but there is much more than hunting that our community has to offer. If you have never been to Eagle Lake, or, if it’s been a while since you have, explore the pages of this guide to sample only a few of the reasons to visit or make us your hometown.

Eagle Lake is located in southeast Colorado County, on US Highway 90A, some 60 miles West of Houston, 140 miles east of San Antonio, and 100 miles southeast of Austin.

Highways serving the community are US Hwy 90A, Texas FM 102, FM 3013, FM 1093 and 12 miles to the north is Interstate 10.

One of our greatest assets is the people of Eagle Lake and the surrounding areas. However, we recognize that it is business that provides

the fuel that runs our economy, and provides jobs to our residents; it is business that makes the investments of money and other resources that keep our community strong. This guide will furnish you with valuable information about the community, our rich history and the wealth of opportunities that await you in Eagle Lake and its surrounding areas.

The Eagle Lake area has long been an agricultural community. Rice is the major crop; however, cotton, grains, and cattle production are also important to our economy. Sand and gravel mines around Eagle Lake supply the materials for construction to a large part of southeast Texas. Today, Eagle Lake and surrounding areas are diversifying their economy with a strong emphasis on bringing new industry into the area, as well as helping existing business prosper and grow.

Rice fields, along with the largest private lake in the State of Texas, Eagle Lake, provide a wintering ground

for many migratory birds. In addition to the ducks and geese that winter here, many other species of fowl find an attractive habitat in the Eagle Lake area. The city has developed a nature area that includes an observation platform overlooking the lake. This provides the public with a view of the lake and the many birds, alligators, and other wildlife that make this beautiful lake their home.

Eagle Lake is also known as “A Small Town With A Big Heart.” More than just a slogan, it is a way of life here, and we look forward to welcoming you to Eagle Lake!

Historic Downtown on National Register Eagle Lake’s Commercial Historic District, which is listed in the National Register of Historic Places, encompasses approximately ten blocks of commercial development from the late 1800s to an extended period of the late 1950s.

Thirty-five of the thirty-nine buildings throughout the ten-block area contributed to the historical designation. (Unfortunately two of our historic buildings have been lost to fire) Driving through the commercial historic district, you will see amongst the 37 buildings: Ficklen-Frank Stephens Building (1885-’86), Norris Building (1903), Dobbins-Nathan Building (1904), Santa Fe Depot (1911), Hotel Dallas (1912), City Hall, Fire Station, Jail (1926).

David Wintermann Wildlife Area

Take a stroll along the creek to admire beautiful wildlife. The viewing platform allows a panoramic scene overlooking the lake that cannot be rivaled.

The sounds of bullfrogs, the splashes of fish, the buzzing of dragonflies, the slow lazy paddle of alligators and the many species of birds take flight while taking in the beauty of Eagle Lake at its finest. Part of the Eagle Lake Municipal Park, located at Hwy 90A across from Dairy Queen.

area attractions Prairie Edge Museum

Located on Main Street in downtown Eagle Lake, the Prairie Edge Museum was created to preserve and record important information about the natural and cultural history of the Eagle Lake past and present for the education and enjoyment of all.

The museum was established in 1983 and incorporates exhibits that feature plant and animal life from the Ice Age to present time. Exhibits include artifacts that explore the prehistoric Native American cultures, trials and tribulations of pioneers, agriculturalists, homemakers, modern life styles, and effects of human intrusions into the prairie edge environment. There is also documentation of the role of local citizens in politics, education, journalism, agriculture, athletics, conservation, the military and more.

The Prairie Edge Museum Thrift Shop is open the 1st and 3rd Saturday of every month from 9AM to 1PM. The Thrift Shop located at the Museum provides the community an outlet for recycling their clothing and household goods while also giving them an opportunity to purchase gently used items at a reasonable price. Staffed totally by volunteers, the Thrift Shop is the major fundraiser for the museum, allowing us to open the Museum 7 days a week at no charge to the public.

area attractions Annual Fourth Of July Fireworks

Eagle Lake knows how to celebrate Freedom! Each July, a group of dedicated volunteers put together a tremendous fireworks show on Calhoun Rd. After the sun sets, the music starts and the sky is filled with starbursts and sparkles. Cheers and “oohs and ahhs� can be heard all along the roadside.

Bring a couple of chairs to sit in front of your vehicle, or just pop open the tailgate of your pickup and enjoy this free event.

area attractions Eagle Lake Depot Museum

Located at 322 East Main Street in downtown Eagle Lake, the Eagle Lake Depot Museum interprets the importance of railroad transportation for Eagle Lake and the surrounding area.

Eagle Lake was served by 3 railroads at the peak of the era, and artifacts from these lines and many other Texas railroads, are on exhibit. The building was the former Santa Fe depot built in 1911 and used by that railroad until the agency transferred to Lakeside in 1970.

The former agent’s office, waiting room, and baggage room all appear as they would have in the early 1900s with pertinent furniture and furnishings, and the freight room is dedicated to exhibit space.

Exhibits include artifacts such as tools, signs, signals, lamps and lanterns, spittoons, velocipede, telephone/telegraph equipment, tinware, and much more.

The museum is open the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of the month from 10:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. or by appointment and on special occasions such as the Eagle Lake Home Tour.

Spend your day playing nine holes of golf, playing tennis on the lighted tennis courts or just enjoying a nice leisurely lunch at the Joe Reed Recreation Center picnic tables. Across the street you can cool off in the swimming pool, relax under the gazebo and watch the kids play on the playground. There is something for everyone at the Eagle Lake Municipal Park.

area attractions Goose and Duck Hunting

Every winter Eagle Lake’s year-round wildlife inhabitants take a back seat to millions of invaders from the north.

During those months Eagle Lake becomes the home of the largest concentration of migratory waterfowl in North America. Known internationally as “The Goose Hunting Capital of the World,” Eagle Lake is the wintering site for all species of geese and ducks that migrate the great Central Flyway. They feed on grain stubble in the surrounding rice and corn fields. The geese provide one of Eagle Lake’s largest industries - goose hunting. Each year thousands of hunters pour into Eagle Lake for the finest waterfowl hunting to be had anywhere. Hunters come from all parts of the U.S., Mexico, Europe and the Far East. They seldom go away empty handed. You never know who you might be rubbing elbows with when hunting in the area. area attractions Attwater Prairie Chicken National Wildlife Refuge

The Attwater Prairie Chicken National Wildlife Refuge is one of the largest remnants of coastal prairie habitat remaining in Southeast Texas and home to one of the last populations of the endangered Attwater prairie chicken, a ground-dwelling grouse of the coastal prairie ecosystem.

Formerly occupying some 6 million acres of coastal prairie habitat, the Attwater prairie chicken was once one of the most abundant resident birds of the Texas and Louisiana tall grass prairie ecosystem.

Presently, less than 200,000 fragmented acres of coastal prairie habitat remain, leaving the birds scattered between two Texas counties.

The refuge is one of a handful of national wildlife refuges managed specifically for an endangered species; however, recovery activities for this imperiled bird and management of its declining ecosystem go beyond the refuge’s boundaries.

area attractions Eagle Lake League of Arts (ELLA) The Eagle Lake League of Arts, ELLA, was established by area artists and patrons of the arts to stimulate and improve creative endeavors and art skills. It is believed that ELLA can provide an economic stimulus to further revitalize downtown Eagle Lake. Artistic work in our community includes Sculpting and 3 Dimensional Art, Painting and Drawing, Fiber Arts, Quilting, Writing and Poetry, Performing Arts and Photography.

area attractions Eagle Lake Regional Airport

The City of Eagle Lake has an excellent General Aviation Airport. Since 2002 the City of Eagle Lake has built 21 T-hangars for storing individual aircraft. We also built 2 large box hangars that can accommodate up to 4 aircraft each.

Current services include aircraft fuel available 24/7, flight training, and flight physicals. Our AWOS (Automated Weather Operating System) is fully functional, and aids pilots in landings and in flight planning, weather forecasting, and also provides assistance to emergency life flight operations through our local full service hospital.

General Aviation Airports provide many services to the community. These include medical emergency flights, law enforcement, emergency relief, aerial firefighting, and search and rescue. Agricultural spraying is also an important service in the Eagle Lake area. General aviation aircraft conducts three out of every four takeoffs and landings at U.S. airports and most of these flights occur at general aviation airports.

Eagle Lake is proud to be a member of the National Airport System (NPIAS). Of the 19,000 airports and landing facilities in the United States, only 3,300 are selected to be a part of the national system. Be being a member of the national system, the airport is eligible for state and federal grant funding to further the development of the airport. We are currently working on a 2-year grant to extend the runway and make overall general improvements to the airport.

The Eagle Lake area is unique in that we not only are in the North American Central Flyway, but the existence of a lake area with marshes, river habitat, old timber, wetland (listen for rails and swamp sparrows), dry land farming area (a myriad sparrows, sandpipers, etc.), and most especially natural undisturbed Prairie habitat may provide a glimpse of ducks, egrets, herons, bald eagles and even terns. During the winter months, LeConte Sparrow watch for return of migratory peregrine falcons.

The Attwater Prairie Chicken National Wildlife Refuge is only minutes east of Eagle Lake on FM 3013, where walking and driving tours are available to the public from dawn to dusk BlueJay daily (stop by the visitor’s center to learn more about this endangered species and pick-up a local birding list).

Venture north on FM 102 to the Ramsey area and take a leisurely drive down Lyle Road, known in the Audubon circles Male House Finch as “Eagle Lake’s Good Birding Road.”

The Eagle Lake Golf Course is yet another protected area with nesting Great Horned Owls, Purple Gallinules, Killdeer, Egrets, Mississippi Kites and much more.

While birding don’t fail to look-up often, as we have nesting Bald Eagles and multitudes of raptors that remain in the area Cardinal fishing along the river, lake and in the rice canals all year.

Texas Challenge is a 5 1/2 month residential military style academy sponsored by the Texas National Guard. It is a tuition free education program for youth ages 16 to 18 who are disengaged from school. They offer academic instruction, but more importantly, provide structure and discipline to help cadets develop personal accountability and become successful adults.

area attractions Public River Access to Colorado River

The closest public boat ramp and canoe/kayak launch site to the Colorado River from Eagle Lake is only 6 miles away on the Eagle Lake side of the Colorado River Bridge on HWY 90A. It is known as the Altair Boat Ramp and is one of the few public river access sites. In addition to the launch ramp, facilities include paved parking and a picnic site within the highway right of way. This boat ramp is for day use only.

Picnic areas are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

area attractions Agriculture – Rice Culture in Colorado County

In 1898, Captain William Dunovant (1845-1902), a local plantation owner and entrepreneur, planted 40 acres of rice at the southeast corner of Eagle Lake as an experiment. He used convict labor from a nearby prison farm to construct levees and harvest the new crop. The small tract produced such encouraging results that in 1899 Dunovant built a pumping plant on the lake and irrigated 250-300 acres. The second venture proved so successful that over 30,000 acres of rice were cultivated in the Colorado River Valley in 1900 and over 56,000 acres in 1901, mostly in Colorado County.

Rice quickly replaced cotton and sugar cane as the primary cash crop in Colorado County. That crop’s widespread economic impact was reflected in the increase of property values, the influx of new families, the reclamation of abandoned croplands, the rise in new railroad construction, and the rapid development of allied service industries, such as rice mills and irrigation and canal companies.

While driving around Colorado County you will see many local farmers growing rice and other crops. You can also admire the Texas A&M University, David R. Wintermann Rice Research Station at Eagle Lake. The station provides 120 acres of land for research activities.

Rice cultivation continues to be a major industry in Eagle Lake.

a brief history Eagle Lake’s history stretches back to the time when the vast prairies were abundantly covered with tall grass, wild flowers and wild game.

The Karankawa Indians were known to have settled here. They fished in the lake, ate the alligators, and used the grease from them to ward away the mosquitoes. Legends have grown around the presence of the Indians, and the earliest known version of “The Legend of the Lake” was printed in the “Morning Star”, published in Houston June 13, 1839.

Later, it was reprinted by the “Richmond Telescope”. “The Legend of the Lake” is a romantic tale of two ill-fated lovers beside the waters of the lake.

Eagle Lake is marked on early Texas maps. The name was probably given in 1821 by William W. Little and James Beard, two of Austin’s scouts, when one of them killed an eagle on the lake and called the water “Laguna del Aquila.”

On March 22, 1838, Patrick Reels was granted 2,391 acres on the shores of the lake, adjoining land grants owned by A. L. McLain and James McNair.

In 1848 this grant was patented to the heirs of P. Reels by the state.

Harris purchased 2,300 acres of Patrick Reels’ property in 1856. It was divided among Good and his sons. Good subsequently deeded half interest in 600 acres to DeWitt Clinton Harris a director of the Buffalo Bayou, Brazos and Colorado Railway. Together they planned the town to be a station on a new railroad between Harrisburg and Austin.

The rails reached Eagle Lake in 1859. Later the Southern Pacific, the Cane Belt, the San Antonio and Aransas Pass, and the Santa Fe Railroads all made Eagle Lake accessible for shipment of crops and, later, of gravel.

Judge J. J. Mansfield, a distinguished congressman from Texas, began his law practice in Eagle Lake and edited a small newspaper called “The Canoe”. He was elected county judge in 1888, and on September 13, 1888, Mansfield issued the order of incorporation of Eagle Lake.

Captain J.W. McCarty was the first mayor and T.W. Eldridge was the first city marshal. Eldridge was the founder of Sugar Land Industries.

After the Civil War, Capt. William Dunovant started raising sugarcane and built a sugar mill at Lakeside, on the eastern shore of the lake. In 1913 the mill was sold and moved to Jamaica. Dunovant also introduced the cultivation of rice irrigated by lake water (and river water) in 1896.

Huge sand and gravel deposits were mined west of the lake, leaving stretches of water for fishing and water skiing and bringing the manufacture of concrete products to Eagle Lake.

Numerous bones of ancient animals were found in the gravel mines.

Production of both oil and natural gas in the area also contributed to the economy.

In the 1960s Eagle Lake became a recreational center for hunting geese and ducks that wintered on the prairies in the rice stubble and around the lake.

The growing of rice on the prairies surrounding the town has attracted a vast number of ducks and geese to the area. The fine hunting prompted Eagle Lake to be proclaimed the “Goose Hunting Capital of the World.”
