Welcome to Roatan The Island Jewel of the Western Caribbean


he island of Roatán is a place few have ever seen, yet over $500 million in luxury development projects are currently under construction. Roatán is magnificent. Clear water, great climate, lush, hilly, friendly, and modern in the ways you want in a resort destination. Indeed, Roatán is one of those few remaining places that seems untouched…and it’s a little over two hours from Texas! Roatán, located between the islands of Útila and Guanaja, is the largest of Honduras’ Bay Islands. The island was formerly known as Ruatan and Rattan. It is approximately 60 kilometres (37 mi) long, and less than 8 kilometres (5.0 mi) across at its widest point. The island consists of two municipalities (out of a total of four in the department): Jose Santos Guardiola in the east (named for the former president of Honduras) and Roatán (also including the Cayos Cochinos) further south in the west. The most populous town of the island is Coxen Hole, capital of Roatán municipality, located in the southwest. Other important towns include French Harbour, West End, and Oak Ridge, the capital of Jose Santos Guardiola municipality. The easternmost quarter of the island is separated by a convoluted channel through the mangroves that is 15 meters wide on the average. This section is called Helene, or Santa Elena in Spanish. Satellite islands at the eastern end are Morat, Barbaretta, and Pigeon Cay. Further west between French Harbour and Coxen Hole is Barefoot Cay. Known as Burial Key until 2001, Barefoot Cay now is privately owned and houses a luxury resort popular with celebrities. Located near the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the largest barrier reef in the Caribbean Sea (second largest worldwide after Australia’s Great Barrier Reef), Roatán has become an important cruise ship and scuba diving destination in Honduras. Tourism is most important economic 6

sector, though fishing is also an important source of income for islanders. Roatán is located within 50 minutes of LGS. The island is served by the Juan Manuel Gálvez International Airport. HISTORY The pre-Columbian indigenous peoples of the Bay Islands are believed to have been related to Paya, Maya, Lenca or Jicaque, which were the cultures present on the mainland. Christopher Columbus on his fourth voyage (1502–1504) came to the islands as he visited the neighboring Bay Island of Guanaja. Soon after the Spanish began raiding the islands for slave labor. More devastating for Native American communities was exposure to Eurasian infectious diseases to which they had no immunity, such as smallpox and measles. Diseases ran in epidemics, and no indigenous people survived. Throughout European colonial times, the Bay of Honduras attracted a diverse array of individual settlers, pirates, traders and military forces, engaged in various economic activities and playing out political struggles between the European powers, chiefly Britain and Spain. Roatán and the other islands were used as frequent resting points for sea travelers. On several occasions, they were subject to military occupation. In 1723/1724 an approximately 20-year-old-man from New England, Philip Ashton, managed to survive as a castaway on the island for sixteen months until he was rescued (see Edward E. Leslie, Desperate Journeys, Abandoned Souls, 1988, pp. 100–120). During that time they were governed by self-proclaimed King Kyle Edward Chauncey, a redhaired white man leading mostly Spanish speakers among those of European descent. In contesting with the Spanish for colonization of the Caribbean, the English occupied the Bay Islands on and off between 1550 and 1700. During this time, buccaneers found the vacated, mostly unprotected

The 20th century saw continued population growth resulting in increasing economic changes, and environmental challenges. A population boom began with an influx of Spanish-speaking Mestizo migrants from the Honduran mainland. In the last decades they tripled the original resident population. Mestizo migrants settled primarily in the urban areas of Coxen Hole and Barrio Los Fuertes (near French Harbour). In these areas Spanish is common, with English speakers more common among descendants of early colonists, as well as in the other areas inhabited chiefly by islanders rather than former mainlanders.

islands a haven for safe harbor and transport. English, French and Dutch pirates established settlements on the islands. They frequently raided the cumbersome Spanish cargo vessels carrying gold and other treasures from the New World to Spain. In 1797, the British defeated the Black Carib, who had been supported by the French, in a battle for control of the Windward Caribbean island of St. Vincent. Weary of their resistance to British plans for sugar plantations, the British rounded up the St. Vincent Black Carib and deported them to Roatán. The majority of Black Carib migrated to Trujillo on mainland Honduras, but a portion remained to found the community of Punta Gorda on the northern coast of Roatán. The Black Carib, whose ancestry includes Arawak and African Maroons, remained in Punta Gorda, becoming the Bay Island’s first permanent post-Columbian settlers. They also migrated from there to parts of the northern coast of Central America, becoming the foundation of the modern-day Garífuna culture. The majority permanent population of Roatán originated from the Cayman Islands near Jamaica. They arrived in the 1830s shortly after Britain’s abolition of slavery in 1838. The changes in labor force disrupted the economic structure of Caymanian culture. Caymanians were largely a seafaring culture and were familiar with the area from turtle fishing and other activities. Former Caymanian slaveholders were among the first to settle in the seaside locations throughout primarily western Roatán. Former slaves also migrated from the Cayman Islands, in larger number than planters, during the late 1830s and 1840s. Altogether, the former Caymanians became the largest cultural group on the island.

But in terms of population and economic influence, the mainlander influx was dwarfed by the overwhelming tourist presence in most recent years. Numerous American, Canadian, British, New Zealand, Australian and South African settlers and entrepreneurs engaged chiefly in the fishing industry, and later, provided the foundation for attracting the tourist trade. The rapid and dramatic demographic changes that Roatán has experienced in the 21st century has contributed to the complexity of the environmental challenges of the island. In 1998, Roatán suffered some damage from Hurricane Mitch, temporarily paralyzing most commercial activity. Native islanders claimed the storm broke three previously undisturbed Aguila shipwrecks. CARACOLES The Caracol people are an English-speaking people who have been established in Northern Honduras (specifically, the Bay Islands) since the early 19th century. They are chiefly of European and British-AfroCaribbean descent. Caracol is Spanish for “conch, snail or shell”, and relates the people of the Bay Islands to their unique environment and their sea-faring culture. In its current usage, the term caracol refers to all people born in the Bay Islands region, and their descendants. The region of the Bay Islands encompasses the three major islands of Roatan, Utila, and Guanaja, and the smaller islands or keys. These people are also called “Islanders,” especially locally. Over time the form of English spoken by the Caracol has changed. The language differs mostly in morphology but also in pronunciation and accent and, to a lesser extent, in syntax and vocabulary, from the English of the other British Caribbean colonies. They are similar enough to be mutually intelligible.

For a brief period in the 1850s, Britain declared the Bay Islands its colony. Within a decade the Crown ceded the territory formally back to Honduras. British colonists were sent though, and asked William Walker, a freebooter with a private army, to help end the crisis in 1860 by invading Honduras; he was captured upon landing in Trujillo and executed there. In the latter half of the 19th century, the island populations grew steadily and established new settlements all over Roatán and the other islands. Settlers came from all over the world and played a part in shaping the cultural face of the island. Islanders started a fruit trade industry which became profitable. By the 1870s it was purchased by American interests, most notably the New Orleans and Bay Islands Fruit Company. Later companies, the Standard Fruit and United Fruit Companies became the foundation for modern-day fruit companies, the industry which gave Honduras the sobriquet “banana republic”.

“By far it’s the most difficult sport I’ve ever tried,” says Tom Spitsnaugle, co-founder of a website that presents training videos by world-class ropers. “With two horses, two riders and an unpredictable steer, you’ve got five brains and that means anything can happen. It happens very fast; you have to be able ride your horse and handle a rope.” As it happens, Tom Cusick, owner and developer of the 1,000-acre Estancia gated residential community, is an avid team-roping competitor


along with friend, country recording star and Estancia homesteader George Strait. This explains the presence of a world-class equestrian center and arena on the grounds where they and friends can improve their methods. The arena’s professional quality and features such as an arena balcony, perfect for capturing shots of bucking horses and steers, persuaded Spitsnaugle – a successful Dallas businessman in an earlier life – to select Estancia as one of several arenas nationwide in which to shoot training videos and action vignettes. He and a crew of champion team ropers, Jake Barnes, Clay O’Brien Cooper, Bobby Harris, Cesar de la Cruz, Charles Pogue and Bret Beach, from throughout the United States spent several days in late October and early February shooting at the facility. an exciting sport. The potential earnings are considerable and these cowboys expect the best in facilities and locales. Plus, they enjoy the plush, but rustic proximity of the arena’s private cantina. Since team roping is catching on nationally and worldwide – Spitsnaugle says up to 300,000 people globally are estimated to participate in the pricey sport. – Estancia’s covered equestrian center and cedar riding ring may add to the community’s luster for adventurous homebuyers. However, for most families, Estancia’s other recreational offerings more than meet their requirements. They seem to be everywhere you look: There’s the 400-acre private lake, Lake Estancia, stocked with bass and catfish, perfect for fishing and canoeing. There’s the 200 acres of greenbelt with 10 miles of tree-lined riding, biking and hiking trails, the football and soccer fields and the lakeside baseball diamond. The Lakeside Pavilion, with a 1,400 square foot patio and handcrafted stone fireplace, is a spectacular place for family picnics. Stablewood Springs

he luckiest among us, at least once in our lives, wind up holding something so beautiful, so wonderful, that we feel compelled to share it with others. That is how Houston developer Tom Fatjo felt about the slice of Texas Hill Country that became Stablewood Springs Resort. “I’m well acquainted with the Hill Country,” said Fatjo from across an expansive conference table in his Houston office. “I’ve been going there since I was 10. Went to summer camp there as a child.” During the years that followed, Fatjo said he came in contact with hundreds of adults who, like himself, longed for some sort of child-like reconnection to that special place in their pasts. When he bought the 540 acres within which Stablewood Springs is built, the property was earmarked as a family retreat where he, his children and their children could escape whatever weighed on their souls whenever they liked. From any of dozens of hilltops and meadows there, they could take in a deep breath of Hill Country air and let out whatever baggage needed expulsion that week or day or minute. The more he visited the property, which in many ways reminds him southern France, Fatjo said, the more public his long-term vision for that land became. A talented team was assembled, plans were drawn, and from those rolling hills was carved a uniquely magnificent oasis. The level of luxury to which guests of Stablewood Springs are exposed is extreme, almost excessively so and invariably beyond expectation. In this resort, Fatjo and his collaborators have created something of an adult


summer camp, a place where men and women – and their families – can enjoy every good thing that the Texas Hill Country has to offer. “One of the comments I hear most from our guests is that it wasn’t what they thought it would be, that it was in so many ways more,” said Tiffany Townsend, guest services manager for Stablewood Springs. “It’s been described as having a sort of ‘mom-and-pop’ feel with luxury amenities.” Visitors also sometimes underestimate the property’s inclusion of children, all ages, in its activities. Most anything the adults can do, within reason, children can do, as well. Barely five years old, Stablewood Springs already has garnered national attention for its impeccable service and style. The New York Times named it Texas’ most grand resort and further heralded the place as ranking among the top 10 properties in the entire nation. Such notoriety is no accident. Staff members at Stablewood Springs, each and all of them, are genuinely friendly and hand-picked for their ability to anticipate their guests’ needs and wants. Although the majority of the resort’s guests come from Houston, Dallas and San Antonio, in that order, the appeal of Stablewood Springs is increasingly worldwide. Visitors from numerous countries already have discovered and marveled at Stablewood Springs. Most were drawn here by the insistent recommendation of friends who already had hiked or golfed or dined or simply reclined on a private patio and witnessed a Hill Country sunset.

“This is more than just another luxury property,” said Townsend. “We offer things you can’t find elsewhere, like kayaking trips down the Guadalupe River and mountain biking Texas style.” The resort also has seven miles of hiking trails and several fishing lakes on property, and guest-access to a championship golf course nearby. And at the end of a day spent witnessing whatever the Texas Hill Country has to offer that day, guests can retreat to Stablewood Resort’s pool, which Townsend said is among the guests’ favorite places to land after whichever activity they’ve enjoyed. For some guests, lounging around the exquisite pool is activity enough to pass the day. Something uniquely Stablewood is the ability to own a private retreat within its boundaries and, at a whim, enjoy all the property’s amenities. In addition to pampering its guests, Stablewood Springs also includes select parcels set aside for private accommodations. Two dozen private residences are built or nearly so, and a handful more will be built as the property continues its development. Adding to the attraction, Stablewood Springs offers its owners the opportunity to participate in a rental pool under two distinctly different options. Both are fair, and one or the other has appealed to roughly half the current owners. “More than 8,000 families come to the Hunt (Texas) area every summer for the camps,” said Fatjo. Now, he said, parents who make that drive to deliver their children into the care of the region’s high-end summer camps have good reason to linger for a lazy, luxurious night or two, perhaps the entire week, or to simply keep the family intact and enjoy that same time together. Build an appetite. Extraordinary food is made all the more so if you’ve worked up an honest hunger throughout the day. To help with that, Stablewood Springs offers a variety of physical activities to burn calories, raise a heart rate get its guests thinking about the good food that awaits them. The resort features dedicated hiking and running trails, an outstanding pool in which to swim until your fingers wrinkle, and several miles of mountain biking trails. Those cycling trails are designated with signage

as suitable for beginner, intermediate and advanced riders; rental bikes and professional instructors are available. Additionally, resort owners and guests have playing privileges at Riverhill Country Club, a Byron Nelson-designed layout just 15 minutes down the road. Swim. Ride a bike. Tee it up. Play like a kid all day. Then reclaim the privileges of adulthood for an exquisite meal and, if you fancy, retreat to Stablewood Springs’ spa for an evening massage. Strictly business There is opportunity to for a select few people who own units at Stablewood Springs to recoup some of their investments through participation in a somewhat unique rental program. Owners may select from a plan that returns 45 percent of rental revenue to them or another that guarantees them an 8 percent return. There are details involved with such creativity, of course, but both programs reflect the confidence of Fatjo and his team in the long-term future of Stablewood Springs.
