ART

From pretty to gritty, contemporary urban landscapes have become the ultimate in luxury vacations: They allow viewers to travel to all their favorite places around the world without breaking social-distancing rules.

The genre, which has a long history, has been taken up by painters like Tom Christopher, who focuses on the streets of New York City; Lindsey Kustusch, whose latest works show London in a new light; and Ana Schmidt, who has put Bilbao, Spain, on the map.

“I usually choose my street scenes where I live,” says Schmidt, who sees cityscapes as social spaces. “But these images do not try to be realistic depictions of these areas.

They are reflections of the transformation of the cities; they are detailed representations of urban landscapes, without human presence and without horizons or skies.”

Schmidt, whose works are in the Art Renewal Center, a digital museum for realist art, is drawn to what she calls “peripheral landscapes, formed in part around motorways and transport systems” where “nature appears sometimes domesticated or invading unexpected spaces.”

To get the right scene, Schmidt goes sightseeing, creates a variety of images of the city site, composes outdoor studies, and eventually sketches a definitive point of view.

The paintings, she says, have multiple layers of meaning that go far beyond the viewer’s memory of a specific space.

“They also have aesthetic values—composition, unity, and variety,” she says.

ARCHITECTURE

In this age of working from home, interior spaces become multitasking hubs, taking on a variety of functions to accommodate the needs of everyone in the household.

Sometimes new spaces that put everyone together in an orderly manner are created; other times several spaces are reconfigured to accommodate new uses and users.

“We have been providing spaces for working at home long before the pandemic,” says Gary Brewer, a partner at New York City-based Robert A.M. Stern Architects, adding that the firm has designed not only work spaces for parents but also for children.

For a family with two grade-school children who live in the New York suburbs, the firm gave new purpose to an upstairs hall.

“We built in a pair of desks—one for each child, and near to each other, but separate—just outside the kids’ bedrooms, each wide enough to seat a child, and when necessary, a helpful parent,” Brewer says. “Each desk has its own window, so it’s flooded with natural

light, and its own bookcase.”

He adds that with wireless connections, any room in the house can be repurposed for a variety of tasks.

“Some people use breakfast tables, some use dining room tables, others work in family rooms—often the same people but at different times of the day or depending on how much privacy or collaboration they might want or need for specific activities,” he says.

DESIGN

Tapestries, which since ancient times have been popular wall decorations, are being used to bring a touch of comfort to contemporary interiors.

“They are functional as well as decorative,” says Dawn Elise Hamilton, owner of DawnElise Interiors International, which is based in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. “They are great noise absorbers, which is especially important in modern glass and stone homes,” she adds.

“I’ve used tapestries from all time periods and in all styles to create eclectic collections,” Hamilton says. “They bring variety—I don’t want to hang a bunch of framed prints or canvases together.”

In the family room of a Fort Lauderdale home, Hamilton made a 5-by-7-foot woven cotton tapestry the focal point of the main seating area.

“It’s in an Asian/Indian design,” she says. “The owner’s mother gave it to her when she bought the house. It’s perfect for Florida because it’s not too heavy. Because it was so light in weight, I framed it, which I don’t typically do.”

Tapestries, she says, make spaces and their inhabitants feel snug and safe.

“A lot of us are looking for this now,” she adds. “Tapestries remind us of simpler, easier times.”

EVER - POPULAR GLASS HOUSES MIX INSIDE AND OUT TECHNOLOGY HAS ALLOWED ARCHITECTS TO PUSH BOUNDARIES

Glass houses bring in an abundance of light, blurring the lines between the exterior and interior. Philip Johnson’s the Glass House, shown above, was originally on five acres in New Canaan, Conn., but the property has been expanded to 50 acres.

ight and landscape are truly integrated in a glass house.

There are no obstructions, only views that go on and on.

Technology has allowed architects to push the boundaries of these structures, making them more efficient and sustainable. But the style has its origins in the first part of the 20th century.

“The whole idea of glass construction goes back to the earliest days of modernism,” says Hilary Lewis, chief curator and creative director at the Glass House.

The Glass House, designed by Philip Johnson in New Canaan, Conn., is one famous example of the style. The architect completed the home in 1949 and lived there until his death in 2005.

Johnson’s design was inspired by the work of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s Farnsworth House just outside of Chicago, Lewis notes. Although the Farnsworth House wasn’t built until 1951, it was designed in 1945. Both sites are now open to the public and maintained by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

In addition to the use of industrial elements, such as glass, brick, and steel, hallmarks of these homes were open layouts with direct access to the outside. Johnson’s Glass House was 9

originally set on five acres of expertly landscaped grounds—the property is now about 50 acres.

“Johnson was thinking about integrating with nature,” Lewis explains.

“It was really about the idea of bringing the inside into connection with the outside, or indoor-outdoor living.”

Many of these elements are now key features of modern buildings, from coastal mansions in Florida and California to country estates.

“It used to be an extravagance to build with glass, but now it’s not so much,” Lewis says.

Contemporary architecture firms such as Deborah Berke Partners and Toshiko Mori continue to push the style

forward, Lewis notes. Both based in New York, they use today’s technology to make glass homes more efficient to build and run.

Take the East End Compound in Bridgehampton, N.Y., by Deborah Berke Partners. The 6,900-square-foot home incorporates a flat roof for solar panels and canopies that extend over outdoor spaces to create shade and diminish glare. Built in 2013, it is LEED Gold Certified, meaning it fulfills certain energy efficiency, sustainability, and other requirements established by the U.S. Green Building Council.

“In using glass, we try to balance the great views with a careful attention to comfort and simple ways of

achieving energy performance,” says Ameet Hiremath, a partner at Deborah Berke Partners. That includes “shade structures along glass lines, the optimal orientation of the building for the sun, and super-insulating the building [in] solid walls and roofs.”

Glass itself has also come a long way.

Today the material can be embedded with materials that provide insulation and protection from the sun without changing the look. And clever use of shading can assist in heating and cooling the space.

Deborah Berke Partners is working on another project that not only shares the aesthetic of Johnson’s Glass House, but also its ZIP Code.

Today’s glass can be insulated and protect owners from the elements.

New England Guest Pavilion in New Canaan is a rectangular glass structure designed to maximize views of a pond on the eight-acre property.

“Just as earlier generations of glass houses pushed the technology of their time, we are doing the same now,” according to Hiremath.

For example, its floor-to-ceiling sliding window walls have ultrathin profiles. And the German-made glass panels for the pavilion are close to 10 square feet.

It’s “the very edge of what can be produced for a triple-pane window,” Hiremath explains. “We also detailed it in a way that makes inside and outside seamless, by setting the glass edge right into the floor.”

In addition, the firm has taken on all aspects of the project, including the architecture, interiors, and landscape, to create a unified design throughout.

The Ghost House, a 5,500-squarefoot home designed by United Kingdom–based BPN Architects in Warwickshire, is another ultramodern design. In addition to glass, the main materials are poured in-situ concrete and black steel. The home was completed in December 2018, and won accolades from the Royal Institute of British Architects and was shortlisted for Grand Designs House of the Year.

Inside, the glass walls and almost 10-foot ceilings give the home an expansive feeling. From the outside, the structure almost seems to hover

over the two pools on either side of the entrance.

When a home is so minimal in design, the outside landscaping and lighting become even more important, Lewis notes.

Johnson, himself, used to refer to the grounds of his property as “very expensive wallpaper,” which was meticulously cared for. There was also an intricate lighting system at the Glass House, so the gardens were on view both in the day and nighttime hours.

“Johnson used to joke that when clients would say to him, ‘design me a glass house,’ his response would be, ‘ah, but do you have land,’” Lewis says. “It’s really about experiencing that exquisite landscape.”

Glass surroundings give a home a more expansive feel.

Now, conservationists find themselves scrambling for support from government and private entities.

Beyond tourism’s crucial economic impact on various African economies, the industry contributes to community development and conservation in rural, underserved areas.

on the continent, but among those who have staked their lives and careers on helping Africa, its people, and wildlife, there’s a renewed sense of urgency to solicit the aid of the public.

The Oscar-winning actress and philanthropist Lupita Nyong’o lends her support to various organizations in Africa, and serves as WildAid’s ambassador for elephants and Africa. The San Francisco-based organization aims to reduce global consumption of wildlife products while growing local support for conservation efforts. In addition to working on women’s issues and supporting the arts, Nyong’o has traveled to her native Kenya with WildAid to advocate for elephant conservation.

“The work of WildAid is so important because it is a re-education, a reorientation of the value of nature to

us,” Nyong’o says. “What they are doing is making a huge difference in raising awareness on behalf of elephants, on behalf of wildlife, and on behalf of human beings, as well. It’s for our own good.”

One of Africa’s other foremost fashion icons, Behati Prinsloo might be known around the world for her glamorous exploits, but the Namibian-raised supermodel remains closely tied to her homeland through her work as Save the Rhino Trust’s (SRT) Global Ambassador.

The Namibian-based organization works to protect the last free-roaming population of black rhinos left in the world. While there were more than 100,000 black rhinos roaming Africa as recently as the 1960s, current estimates place fewer than 5,630 remaining in the wild. Covering an area of 25,000

square kilometers, SRT trackers come from local communities and maintain long patrols on foot through rough, unfenced terrain.

“Covid-19 and restrictions to travel have been difficult for all of us, and for some much more than others,” Prinsloo says. “I’m thinking of the SRT trackers, Rhino Rangers, and local communities involved in rhino conservation and tourism in the northwest of Namibia, my home country.”

Prinsloo helped design a collection of T-shirts, sweatshirts, and caps, proceeds of which went to the Save the Rhino Trust, for the Los Angeles retailer M.Fredric. (The collection sold out in a week when it debuted in December 2019, with additional productions subsequently planned.)

guys on the ground to help support their efforts to protect the rhinos, stop poaching, and support their families is critical,” she says.

In January 2020, SRT launched the B2Gold Rhino Gold Bar in collaboration with B2Gold, a Canadian gold producer with a mine in central Namibia. All proceeds go to rhino conservation. Sales of the gold bar have provided support ranging from salaries for rangers and field staff to funding to upgrade the organization’s communications system.

Notable among the continent’s conservation-minded philanthropists is Luke Bailes, the founder and CEO of Singita, a conservation and ecotourism brand with 15 luxury safari lodges.

“Africa doesn’t have the same financial firepower as first-world countries, so the pandemic could be far more damaging here for people and wildlife,” Bailes says. During the pandemic, Bailes has focused on supporting antipoaching units and emergency food relief efforts, distributing more

than 700 food parcels in South Africa.

Tswalu Kalahari Reserve, South Africa’s largest private game reserve, relies on the support of the billionaire philanthropist Nicky Oppenheimer and the Oppenheimer family, the driving force behind the Tswalu Foundation and Oppenheimer Research Conference. Tswalu’s low-impact, high-value approach to ecotourism ensures that revenue flows directly back into conservation work.

“Most of the funding in the conservation industry comes from the tourism sector...The tourism industry in South Africa, for lack of a better word, is dead,” says Duncan MacFadyen, head of research and conservation at Tswalu.

Prior to the pandemic, various organizations reported that more than tourism was needed to fund their conservation efforts. Virginia-based The Nature Conservancy (TNC), a charitable environmental organization founded in 1951, had already been working pre-Covid on a number of diversified

financial mechanisms, including debtfor-nature deals, carbon offsets, and endowment/trust funds for nature.

The conservancy enlists the aid of supporters such as John D. Bernstein, a partner of Generation Investment Management, the sustainable investment firm co-founded by Al Gore.

“The last 10 years of conservation gains are at risk,” says Bernstein, the current chair of the conservancy’s Africa Council. Bernstein has redoubled his efforts to create more wilderness conservation areas, including a new wilderness reserve in Namibia.

Nyong’o, meanwhile, is using her voice to remind others of the steps they can take to combat poaching. “I am proud of my Kenyan heritage, and part of that heritage is the incredible wildlife haven that is in our care,” Nyong’o says. “I have come to realize that when you know more, you do more. I want to encourage people all over the world to learn more about these incredible animals.”

design’s latest stars are putting their marks on the world, creating styles for a new generation. Here are some of Ithenterior world’s most sought-after designers worth checking out.

LAURENT CHAMPEAU AND KELLI WILDE OF CHAMPEAU & WILDE, PARIS

“We like to call our signature style ‘understated chic,’” says Laurent Champeau. “But what defines our style most,” adds Kelli Wilde, “is probably ‘modern classic.’”

Their understated chic/modern classic style was established in their first commission, a Paris apartment where they paired a contemporary art collection with a traditional environment. They used furniture and fabrics to connect the contemporary and classical areas, creating what Wilde calls a “sophisticated yet livable space where our clients can have amazing parties but also have much more formal dinners.”

Champeau, who is 42, and Wilde, 54, have several projects in the works—from an apartment in Paris, where the ballroom has a 26-foot-high ceiling, to a 1930s house in Nevada.

CHARU GANDHI OF ELICYON, LONDON

Charu Gandhi, the founder and director of the award-winning architecture and interior design firm Elicyon, sees design as a form of storytelling, and in her view, “the pursuit of beauty is a story in itself.”

The plots of her stories are always informed by the location, the surroundings, the history, and the heritage of the space. “It can be hard to define our style,” she says, “but I would say it is quite bold, characterful, playful, and stylized.”

Her six-year-old firm has worked on a variety of residential commissions in London as well as in the Middle East, Shanghai, Los Angeles, New York City, and the South of France.

She joined the London offices of the architectural firm Allies and Morrison in 2006 and worked as an interior designer for Candy & Candy starting in 2011.

“For me, it’s always been about creating spaces where time and place stand still and to capture that moment,” she says.

SAHRA SAMNANI OF HOW TO BE VANCOUVER/VICTORIA

Clean, long lines, simple details, and quiet moments that play with light.

These are hallmarks of Sahra Samnani’s signature style, which she has christened “comfortable minimalism.”

“I am fascinated by the idea of removing all the excess. I think a simple line and clean, white walls are so beautiful and quiet. In a world where we have so much, what a wonderful thing it is to pull away from that and focus upon simplicity, quietness, and softness.”

In her residential and commercial projects, Samnani, who is 30, endeavors to “bring a sense of old-world romance—nooks for candles, filtered light through textured glass, and imperfect plaster walls.”

Samnani, who primarily works in Vancouver, was a winner of the 2018 Fantini Design Awards and in 2019 was nominated for West Living Magazine’s Robert Ledingham Memorial Award for Emerging Interior Designers.

DANI ARPS OF DANI ARPS, NEW YORK CITY

Specializing in start-ups, Dani Arps creates comfortable yet productive spaces that seamlessly blur the lines between residential and commercial.

Arps, who’s designed “resimmercial” spaces for the organic frozen-food purveyor Daily Harvest, the mobile ticket platform SeatGeek, and the techteaching online school Codecademy, always includes what she calls “a unique feature” in each project.

She describes her style as “minimalist with an industrial touch. There’s nothing flamboyant,” she says.

Arps, who is 35, opened her design firm in New York City in 2014 and earned a master’s degree in interior design from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. In 2017, she was declared a “Star on the Rise” by the Decoration and Design Building.

Her line of “resimmercial” furniture, for the New York City store Industry West, includes two styles of bar stools, a coffee table, and a dining table that doubles as a conference table.

Blending historical precedents with progressive ideals, architect Chet Callahan imbues spaces with what he calls “romantic functionalism.”

“We aim to create environmentally sensitive buildings and enhance our clients’ and our community’s experience,” he says.

Before opening his eponymous firm in 2017, Callahan, who is 39, worked for Marmol Radziner + Associates, XTEN Architecture, and AGPS. His firm has worked on a variety of projects, including a multigenerational compound in Culver City; an artists’ complex in North Hollywood; and the re-envisioning of Los Feliz’s oldest estate.

A two-time winner of Interior Design magazine’s Best of Year (2007 and 2014), Callahan became interested in design at a young age.

“I used to watch my dad build furniture—and just about everything else,” he says. “And I went antiques shopping with my mom.”

ow that she’s retired from skiing, three-time Olympic medalist and four-time World Cup championship winner N Lindsey Vonn can finally relax a little.

“We’ve been really enjoying this time to ourselves,” says Vonn, who lives in her modern Los Angeles home and fiancé P.K. Subban’s woodsy New Jersey abode. (He plays for the New Jersey Devils.) “P. K. and I don’t usually get this much time together, so it’s actually been a bit of a blessing for us,” says the athlete, who proposed to her NHL star boyfriend in December, with whom she quarantined.

Due to a shared low-key aesthetic and divided decorating duties, cohabitating has been a cinch. “P. K. is more of the art guy. He used to sketch when he was younger, so he’s in charge of all the artwork now,” Vonn says.

“I’ll get the bed sheets and the smaller stuff, but we have pretty similar taste, so it’s not like we have to do a lot to merge our two styles.” Their L.A. life is a mix of casual entertaining (backyard barbecues and movie nights with friends) and the occasional soiree for the Lindsay Vonn Foundation, which provides scholarships for education, sports, and enrichment programs. “We’ll string up these nice lights in the backyard.

It sounds hoity toity,” she says, “but we keep it intimate.”

Though she made her name on the slopes and was born and raised in Minnesota, the 35-year-old Vonn is a self-proclaimed California girl. “I love warm weather.

That’s why I love being out in L.A. I feel like I’m still thawing out from living my life in the snow,” she says.

What else does she love? Here, she shares her five favorite things at home.

GREEN WALL

“In the backyard, we have a living mural—basically it’s a wall filled with plants,” she says.

The previous homeowners were given it as a gift and she decided to keep it there. “I definitely do not have a green thumb, but the gardener takes special care of it. Fortunately, he knows what he’s doing.”

“After winning the bronze medal in downhill at the Olympics in Korea, I was given this beautiful jarlike vessel by a group of older gentlemen who served in the Korean War—as did my grandfather,” she says.

While she doesn’t know what it’s made of, she appreciates the beauty.

“It’s kind of purple and white and gold and I keep it by my bed. I usually put my phone in it at night to disconnect.

They gave me an in memoriam letter thanking my grandfather for his service, and the box was an additional token of gratitude. It’s really special to me.”

“It may sound strange, but I keep my Olympic medals in my sock drawer. Now that I’m retired, we’re thinking of doing something special with my Olympic Gold and P. K.’s Olympic Gold, so that’s our next project,” she says.

For now, they’re in socks because if they hit each other, they scratch.

Her backyard, Vonn says, is her retreat, and the outdoor projector is a highlight. “When it’s not too cold, we can sit outside under the trees and project movies onto the side of the house. Last night we watched Anchorman, which is pretty funny. My dog Lucy absolutely freaked out when the movie dog, Baxter, came on.”

“It’s a watercolor, I think,” she says.

“It was specially made for my foundation. I bought it and the proceeds went to the foundation. I love the message and the bright, rainbow colors—it just sets the tone for the day.”

DEVOTED DESCENDANT AFTER A CAREER IN FASHION, ALEXANDER VREELAND TRAINS HIS BRAND - BUILDING TALENTS ON THE LEGACY OF HIS LEGENDARY GRANDMOTHER, DIANA

ne could say, without exaggeration, that Alexander Vreeland has a O passion for trees—of both the arboreal and familial variety. Though, to be fair, if one did start exaggerating, you’d get no arguments from his flamboyant grandmother.

That particular branch of his family tree has consumed his attention for the past decade, ever since the dutiful grandson took over the estate of the late Diana Vreeland, legendary editor of Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue, and a consultant at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute.

Prior to this, Alexander Vreeland had worked in fashion, running communications for Ralph Lauren and sales and marketing for Giorgio Armani.

He knew about building brands, and set to work securing hers, first by writing the 2013 book Diana Vreeland Memos: The Vogue Years, then developing Diana Vreeland Parfums, a line of scents as bold and vibrant as the woman herself.

Vreeland has now edited a new book, Diana Vreeland: Bon Mots: Words of Wisdom from the Empress of Fashion, with illustrations by Luke Edward Hall.

Published by Rizzoli in March, the pocket-size compendium ranges from the scissor-sharp (“Unshined shoes are the end of civilization”) to the sublime (“Don’t give people what they want.

Give people what they never dreamed they wanted.”)

Vreeland, 65, has been hunkered down with his wife, Lisa Immordino Vreeland (director of the documentary Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel), and their daughter, Olivia, 18, in their Bridgehampton, N.Y., cottage, surrounded by a forest of trees—ginkgos,

maples, Kousa dogwoods—all lovingly planted by Vreeland himself. He caught up with RESIDE® to talk hiking, advice he learned from his grandmother, and more.

It must be comforting to be surrounded by nature.

It’s wonderful. We have wild turkey, deer, ducks. I bought this land 30 years ago. It was a hayfield. Barren. It would’ve been a potato field if it were flatter, but it’s sort of roll-y, which is quite wonderful. I’ve planted tens of thousands of trees on the place. I take great pleasure transplanting, moving them around. I’m very tree-oriented.

It sounds like a great place to go for a hike, with your grandmother’s Bon Mots in your back pocket.

That’s the idea. The book is a small format, with a waxed soft cover. I really wanted it to be a companion book, something you could take with you, read slowly. Her quotes are quite magical.

What advice would she give us today?

My grandmother started working at Harper’s Bazaar in 1936. She was a voice for living a modern life. A voice for women working, doing their thing, looking great, being aware of their body, their clothes, and owning what they were doing with their lives.

Finding your thing and doing it—that applies today.

You’d never worked in fragrance or beauty. Was it a tough adjustment?

The worlds of beauty and fashion are very different. If you show someone a photo of a handbag, they sort of know

if they like it or not. But fragrance is a personal experience. You have to know what it smells like on your skin. Buyers of high-end fragrances are tremendously knowledgeable about scent. It’s a passion, like the way men feel about an extensive watch collection. They know the great years for Rolex or Patek Philippe. So it was a wonderful education. We ended up with 16 fragrances— the most successful is Simply Divine, a tuberose scent.

Your grandmother once wrote, “I believe in back-cracking…I practice it with my grandsons all the time.”

Did you really walk on her back?

[He pauses.] Well….She had this wonderful imagination. If we walked on her back, or if she discussed us doing that, there sort of became a oneness to that.

Ah. You mean...she loved a good story more than the cold-hard facts of things.

As a child, my father was at the American Embassy in Rabat, Morocco, and she was convinced my brother and I rode camels in our backyard, and went to school on horses. In fact, we took a yellow school bus, but she was convinced we’d just saddle up and gallop into class.

[He laughs.]

And no clarifications or visits to the school would change her mind. Sometimes people think the world of fashion is a bunch of catty people sitting around saying mean little quips to each other.

She didn’t come from that school.

She was intent on working with brilliant people and helping them express their imagination. So hers was a very different kind of world.

A FORMER ROWER BRINGS A PREPPY EDGE TO THE CLASSIC GARMENT

By Brent Crane few years ago, Jack Carlson, an Oxford graduate and former memA ber of the U.S. national rowing team,

was putting stickers on a lamppost in SoHo, Manhattan, when two police officers approached. The stickers featured logos for his recently launched clothing brand, Rowing Blazers, and, though the post was already covered in stickers, the officers wrote him up for it. Carlson challenged the ticket in court and won.

Afterward, Carlson memorialized the incident in a graphic tee.

As a brand, Rowing Blazers, which fuses streetwear with prep, is not afraid of a little risk. Genre-defying and tapping into an increasingly trendy aesthetic one might call post-prep, the brand, which has collaborated with Sperry, Lands’ End, J. Crew, and Barbour, among other powerhouses, appeals to a certain kind of posh, ironic consumer. The actor and art-house doyen Timothée Chalamet is a fan, often seen sporting Carlson’s rugby shirts paired with a bomber jacket, a look GQ described as resembling “breaking boarding school dress code and on his way to detention.”

Carlson, 32, is happy to keep Rowing Blazers within the shiny realm of exclusivity. He often turns down offers to sell his wares in big-box stores and restricts

sales to his website, SoHo storefront, and a select number of pop-ups. But he bristles at both the words preppy and streetwear; he wants his brands to “defy” categories.

“The people who are the most interesting or switched on don’t fall neatly into these categories,” he said. “What we’re doing is not a copy of any other brand, and it doesn’t fit nicely into the same categories that other brands do.”

The story of the brand is the story of the founder. A native of suburban Massachusetts, Carlson excelled in rowing in high school. His junior year, he attended the Henley, a competition which he describes as “the Wimbledon of rowing—very prestigious, very British.” There, Carlson had his first schooling in fine blazers.

Rowing clubs from all over Europe attended the Henley, and Carlson loved hearing from them about “all these weird traditions associated with their blazers.” There was so much variety. Blazers from a Dutch club were conspicuously beat-up because the members made a point of wearing them while fighting. Another club made its blazers from the university’s dining hall curtains. “I thought, man, someone should write a book about this.”

Carlson continued rowing at Georgetown University and then at Oxford for graduate school, where he worked toward a Ph.D. in archeology. It was there that he embarked on his book idea seeded at the Henley. At this point, Carlson had rowing friends all over the world. In a global odyssey, he visited their various rowing clubs, in South Africa, Argentina, Europe, and Canada, all the while scribbling down their unique blazer-wearing traditions. For many of these quirky practices, it was the first time they had ever seen paper.

His passion project took four years to complete. The photo-heavy book,

Rowing Blazers, was published in 2014.

Though Carlson had written it thinking only fellow rowers would take interest, it garnered some attention in the menswear world. Eventually, it was picked up

by Ralph Lauren, who hosted a series of events around the book with Carlson.

“This was my first introduction to the industry,” he recalls. “It started the seed of starting my own brand.”

In 2016, he moved to New York City with his girlfriend. That year, while still training with the U.S. national rowing team, he launched Rowing Blazers.

“Almost everybody has some kind of blazer hanging in their closet, but very few people realize that the blazer actually originates in the sport of rowing,” Carlson says. Designed as sportswear for English rowers, the garment was something to keep wearers warm on chilly waters, “almost like the windbreaker or hoodie of its time.” Sewn in club colors, blazers became popular at social events in Cambridge and Oxford.

“They became status symbols, kind of showing who’s in, that you’re a big man on campus,” Carlson says.

Carlson’s passion for history is integral to the brand. “Pieces of clothing are artifacts, just like a piece of pottery, a coin, or piece of jewelry,” he says.

In fact, many of Carlson’s designs are inspired by his sprawling collection of vintage blazers he has amassed over the years, “much to my girlfriend’s dismay.”

It is a constant search for inspiration. The brand releases a new product almost every week. “I’m often very idiosyncratic and specific about these things,” he says.

Much of the output is in limitededition products. In this teasing, getit-while-it-lasts way, they are similar to well-known streetwear brands, like Supreme. “It has a sense of tonguein-cheek, a sense of rebellion to it,” Carlson says.

Soon after, it was almost as hard to come by as the proverbial pot of gold.

Rolex produces only a handful of Rainbows each year, partially due to the difficulty of sourcing the 36 perfectly matched, colored sapphires that create a mesmerizing ombré effect on the bezel.

Only Rolex’s most loyal and successful authorized dealers have a shot at being allocated one. They, in turn, offer them only to their most loyal, spendy VIP clients as a way of saying thank you.

And values have also skyrocketed on the secondary market since its debut. The rose-gold model reached US$310,000 at a Sotheby’s auction in London in April 2019, only a year after

its debut. That’s quite a tidy profit, considering the watch’s list price is about US$97,000.

It’s exactly this kind of speculation that retailers try to fight when determining who will have the opportunity to buy one.

Other highly sought-after production models that are famously hard to find include Patek Philippe’s sporty retro Nautilus Ref. 5711, Audemars Piguet’s timeless Royal Oak “Jumbo” Extra Thin, and astronomically expensive pieces from Richard Mille, such as this past summer’s RM 11-05.

“When a piece like that comes out, of course we want to reward our best customers,” says Greg Simonian, president of Westime in Los Angeles, who reports that demand is so high for Richard Mille and Audemars Piguet models at the mono-brand boutiques Westime operates that they’re not even taking deposits anymore. “At the same time, if there is a new customer who legitimately wants the watch, that’s interesting to us as well, so we make some exceptions here and there,” he says.

“The main thing is we want to make sure we are selling to end consumers who are going to understand, appreciate, and love the watch.”

When it comes to its rarest and most complicated watches, such as minute repeaters and grand complications, Patek Philippe makes the call as to who can acquire one, much like Ferrari allocates its supercars only to its most devoted collector base.

Also in response to market speculators, collectors who are interested in these exceptional Pateks go through an application process to ensure they are brand loyalists.

This year, Patek introduced a trio of six-figure, high-complication watches based off existing models: the Ref. 5303 Minute Repeater Tourbillon, the Ref. 5370 Split-Seconds Chronograph, and the Ref. 5270 Perpetual Calendar Chronograph.

Rarer still are those watches they’re

not producing anymore.

When it comes to vintage Patek Philippes, Paul Boutros, who oversees American watches for Phillips auction house, places the Ref. 1518 at the top of the list. Launched in 1941 and produced through 1951, the 1518 was the first perpetual-calendar chronograph that was serially produced.

“That model was so important that it set the architecture for all future perpetual-calendar chronographs that Patek Philippe uses to the present day, including the modern 5270,” he says.

“And within the 1518 range, the holy grail is one in stainless steel.”

Phillips sold one of the four known steel examples for $11 million in November 2016, setting a record price for a wristwatch at the time.

Outside of purchasing at an auction, Boutros says acquiring such rarities requires being well-connected with proven, reputable sellers because of the preponderance of convincing fakes.

“Exceptional trophy watches are always offered to sellers’ best clients,” Boutros says. “And there are always buyers for them.”

THE PRIVATE CONCOURS CLUB WILL BE A MIAMI CAR LOVER’S PARADISE COVID -19 HAS CAUSED DELAYS, BUT THE CHECKERED FLAG SHOULD BE WAVING BY THE END OF THE YEAR

lthough auto makers such as Porsche have built “experience cenA ters” that include race tracks for its car

owners, Miami’s new Concours Club is something different, and very private.

The enclave is exclusive—40 founding members who like to drive fast paid $350,000 (earning them a lifetime of no dues) and a limited number of new members will come in at $150,000, plus $35,000 annually. The 75-acre site is not only near downtown but on the grounds of the Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport, providing easy access for the many out-of-town members. Planeside car drop-off and pickup can be arranged.

The Concours Club’s twisty, twomile track was designed by Alan Wilson, who also crafted 37 other such courses around the world, including the Thermal Club in Palm Springs, Calif. (also a private facility centered on the track), the Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Ala. (used by Porsche for driving experiences), and the Utah Motorsports Campus in Grantsville. South Florida resident and three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Hélio Castroneves was an early champion of the club, drove the planned circuit in digitized form, and made suggestions to improve it.

All of these driving facilities have been affected by Covid-19. According to Concours owner Neil Gehani in an interview, the club was supposed to open in August but has been delayed to later in the year.

The club includes a gourmet restaurant under the direction of Chef Brad Kilgore (who has four upscale eateries in Miami) and is set up for private member dinners that Gehani said would be carefully socially distanced. And Aaron Weiss, the club’s president, said in an interview that members can sign in with their smartphones at the gate, enter via the pit lane and drive on the track, and leave without any significant staff contact.

“Covid has slowed us down, but it hasn’t stopped us,” Weiss says. “We’re positioned incredibly well for the coronavirus. The club was designed to cater to our members’ convenience and privacy, and that works well with social distancing.”

Members, half living outside Miami, will be able to keep their cars in the club’s 48 garages, available for sale

or rental with more than 700 spaces total. And they can have their vehicles inspected for track fitness, serviced, or upgraded by the in-house team from HP-Tech Motorsport, a successful South Florida-based Ferrari Challenge competitor. And some track cars will be on hand if members don’t have their own ride handy.

Gehani, who’s had a home in Miami for 16 years, is the founder and chief executive officer of the $1.7 billion Trilogy Real Estate Group, which operates in nine states with multifamily development. Concours is his passion project, with a $95 million investment so far.

Gehani says he started out as a tax attorney, didn’t care for the work, and moved into real-estate development.

His first modicum of success led to the purchase of a Porsche 911 and then a GT3, fueling an abiding interest in fast cars. He joined the Autobahn Country Club outside Chicago in 2006, and made frequent use of its private track, eventually competing in events such as the aforementioned Ferrari Challenge (emerging as a North American class champion in 2019).

“In thinking about a club in Miami, I studied how the existing racetrack projects operated,” Gehani says. “And none of them were actually in the city, with

some being hours away. We’re based at a regional airport, and just 13 miles from downtown Miami, nine miles to Miami International Airport, and 14 miles to Miami Beach. You could come here to drive on the track at noon or 1 p.m. and still be home for dinner. If you don’t want to drive, you can eat while your car is being detailed. Our concierges will curate your day.”

The Concours Club is set up for corporate events, including new car model introductions, and there will be driving instruction headed by Jon Branam, an experienced Ferrari coach and Walt Disney stunt driver. But actual races won’t be held on the track—the goal is drivers competing against their own former lap times. The corporate events facility was styled by famed Italian auto design firm Pininfarina, whose U.S. branch is located in Miami.

While it waits to open, Gehani and his team are fine-tuning the nearly completed facility—a $500,000 redo of the track’s first turn, for instance, to make it more exciting—and preparing for a grand opening that, because of these troubled times, has no firmly set date. “We expect to be fully open in the fourth quarter of this year,” Gehani says. “It’s a private club, so it won’t be like reopening Disneyland.”

THE FUTURE OF ART BUYING GALLERIES EMBRACE TECHNOLOGY AND VIRTUAL SHOPPING

hen galleries closed their physical locations earlier this year, ownW ers had to fine-tune how their clients

purchase art. They approached business with a different perspective than preCovid-19, and online viewing rooms, digital exhibitions, and virtual tours began taking the art world by storm. With the future still uncertain and art fairs being postponed or canceled, galleries continue to boost their online presence, offering collectors the opportunity to buy art from the comfort of home.

“We have seen the online viewing room as a natural evolution for the gallery,” says Elena Soboleva, director of online sales at David Zwirner, a contemporary art gallery with locations in New York, London, Paris, and Hong Kong.

Launched in 2017, the gallery’s digital space was the first of its kind, and “has been vital for keeping our business moving forward and our community engaged,” Soboleva says. Once David Zwirner’s physical locations closed, the company generated well over $10 million in art sales through their online viewing room in just a few months.

Clients interested in a piece in the viewing room click the “Inquire” button on the gallery’s website, which leads to information on the work and the artist as well as a space to enter contact information. Based on geography and a client’s language, a sales associate will be in touch to discuss details about the piece, purchasing, and delivery options.

On the West Coast, Traver Gallery in Seattle placed their latest endeavor—new works by celebrated glass artist Dale Chihuly—in the digital arena. Traver offers myriad ways for guests to explore these new works— from online tours and 3-D digital renderings to Zoom gatherings and a video of Chihuly and his wife, Leslie Jackson Chihuly, talking about the work.

The team works directly with clients to provide videos and photos of the artwork in situ in the gallery, additional information about the specific piece, and even mock-up images of the piece in their home, says Sarah Traver, director of the gallery.

She believes virtual gatherings and video exhibition tours have been instrumental in connecting collectors with artists. “You’ll definitely see more digital content and events from us, and most galleries, in the future,” she says.

Rosenfeld Gallery—set originally in a space on Manhattan’s Upper East

Side before relocating to the Miami Design District—is putting energy into promoting its exhibitions online to encourage sales. A recent virtual exhibit, Graffiti Innovators, features the daring work of Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Kenny Scharf.

Rosenfeld is expanding the company website to be more interactive, adding audio tours to works in virtual shows, and bolstering social-media accounts.

“Over the last six years, 30% of our overall sales have been conducted virtually from start to finish,” says Allison Rosenfeld, director of the gallery. “A collector may inquire as to the availability and price of a work. We will fashion them with full provenance, detailed images, a current-condition report, and auction comps if requested,” she explains. If they do make a purchase but aren’t satisfied once they receive the art, she says the gallery “will refund upon return of the piece.”

Gabriel & Guillaume—a traveling decorative-arts gallery that started in Beirut and Paris—exhibits in pop-up spaces rather than traditional brickand-mortar locations. Their latest exhibit is set in the penthouse of the landmarked Steinway Hall on West 57th Street in Midtown Manhattan. The exhibition shows off contemporary and vintage art and furnishings by the likes of Joaquim Tenreiro, Carlo Bugatti, Zaha Hadid, and Jean Prouvé.

Since the soaring space had to close due to the city’s shutdown, the design exhibition went virtual and will remain online at least through the end of 2020.

Buyers interested in purchasing from the online exhibition can contact the owners, after which the partners coordinate delivery from Steinway Hall.

At the same time, with the cancellation of art fairs such as Art Basel and Frieze New York, galleries had to find new and creative ways to connect with collectors. “Their absence for the foreseeable future demands that we are vigilant when reaching out and engaging that clientele independently,” Rosenfeld says.

Traver thinks there’s a future for digital art fairs, which have already begun for Art Basel Hong Kong and Switzerland, and others. While attendees and exhibitors will miss the vibrant energy of art fairs, online alternatives “will continue to spark conversations and interest, resulting in sales,” she explains. “I look forward to seeing how the art world can make these platforms reflect the brilliance of the creative people behind them.”

Meanwhile, David Zwirner has recognized their online viewing room as a seventh exhibition space, in addition to the company’s six brick-and-mortar galleries. And with the possibility of increasing sales in the digital space, it makes sense for fine-art galleries to dedicate more energy to their online capabilities—even post-pandemic.

Soboleva expects to continue reaching “a very wide global audience through our online platform,” she says. “We see physical exhibitions and online-only exhibitions existing shoulder to shoulder.”

THE MAGIC OF MARINE CITY IN BUSAN, SOUTH KOREA THE YOUNG NEIGHBORHOOD OFFERS LOTS OF AMENITIES AND BEAUTIFUL SIGHTS — ESPECIALLY AT NIGHT

By Claire Carponen he waterfront district of Marine City in Busan’s Haeundae District is all glamour with its yacht-filled T waters, shiny skyscrapers, and colorful nighttime views.

The area, in southeast Busan, has water on three sides and was created on reclaimed land in the mid-1980s as a yacht marina and a resort district for the 1986 Asian Games and the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games.

In the mid-2000s, it saw the development of high-rise residential towers, sparked by the growing popularity of the Haeundae District as a tourist destination.

Haeundae Beach, which was featured in the 2009 disaster film Tidal Wave, is famous in Korea and beyond.

At night in Marine City, a canvas of colorful lights from its skyscraper-filled skyline reflects onto the surface of the water. The nearby Gwangan suspension bridge, with its vivid light beams, adds to the futuristic scenery.

Towering above its wide streets are skyscrapers such as the Haeundae Doosan We’ve the Zenith, a landmark development whose 80-story centerpiece tower is one of the tallest in South Korea, according to the Skyscraper Center database.

BOUNDARIES

Marine City lies in southeast Busan, South Korea’s secondlargest city, which has about 3 to 4 million inhabitants.

The area sits south of Centrum City, west of Haeundae Beach and east of the Suyeong River, where it flows out to meet the Korea Strait sea passage.

Marine City 1-ro is a coastal road that runs parallel to its waterfront on its western, southern, and eastern edges. Haeundaehaebyeon-ro forms its northern border.

WHAT MAKES IT UNIQUE

In Marine City, everything is on a grand

scale. It has cinematic streetscapes, with high-volume blocks and long, wide avenues, which open out onto the coastal road offering panoramic sea views.

It has five-star hotels and plenty of places to shop, drink, and dine. In addition, it lies in a prime spot, close to the popular Dongbaekseom island and Haeundae Beach, while being a short distance from central Busan.

Film fans may know that its coastal area—or promenade—is also known as Cinema Street, as it features a brief

history of the Korean film industry.

The Busan International Film Festival (BIFF), dubbed the Cannes of Asia, is held annually in October in the Haeundae District.

The Gwangan highway suspension bridge, which features colorful beams at night and offers a seasonal light display, also starred in the high-speed car chase scene in the 2018 film Black Panther.

entrepreneur Blake Mycoskie sold half the company founded, Toms Shoes, to Bain Capital in a deal that valued Ithenhe2014, brand at $625 million, and stepped down as CEO. For the first time in his life, he had plenty of free time, much of which he spent picking up new hobbies and with his newborn son.

Eventually he found himself “kind of rudderless, and [I realized] that all those years of starting companies really took a toll on my body physically and my mind mentally,” he says.

Mycoskie, now 43, was diagnosed with mild depression, which shocked his friends.

“I realized his passion was really human performance,” Myscoskie says.

“How does he take what he’s learned in the SEALs, and through his engagement with some of the best minds in the world, and apply that to everyday people working a nine-to-five job and dealing with modern living?”

Mycoskie and Dossett went on to start Madefor, a 10-month program aimed at improving body and brain through science. Madefor focuses on habits or practices people have trouble sustaining that can yield untold benefits. These include sleep, hydration, and gratitude. Each month, Madefor clients receive a wellness kit that walks them through these practices.

We spoke to Mycoskie to find out more.

Can you walk me through the basics of the Madefor program?

“I think unfortunately a huge percentage of our population are now experiencing in their life—a lot of uncertainty, a lot of anxiety,” he says.

He started investigating the basic building blocks of human wellbeing. He also met former Navy SEAL, Pat Dossett, who had also obtained an M.B.A. and worked at Google. The two connected over a mutual love of surfing.

Our whole program is built on two foundational things that we learned from the science. The first was you really can’t learn more than one new practice at a time, and it takes 30 days. And the problem, especially today, is so many people are trying to learn too many things at once—I mean, podcast, books, anything like that. You get thrown 10 things to try out, and then you end up doing none of them. What we realized was we had to get back to the basics of deep learning.

And that really is to practice or learn one new thing at a time and really do it diligently for a full month. So each of the 10 things, we teach you over a month.

The second thing that was really surprising to us…[was that] everyone said that the program needed to be completely analog, so no digital component, no app, no device that tells you how you’re doing, no feedback digitally. [Editor’s note: Although Madefor has no digital component, there is a private Facebook group for each class to share experiences, hold others accountable, and ask questions to the company, and more.] We had people create physical tools that they can learn these things in an analog fashion

so that the brain can really rewire…

What we’re trying to do with Madefor is create new pathways in your brain so that these habits become so easy that you don’t even know that you’re doing them anymore. But that takes getting off these digital distractions.

What exactly do customers receive?

Every month, you get a Madefor kit in the mail. You don’t know what you’re going to get, so we believe that there’s an element of entertainment and surprise that’s important, so people are kind of excited and anticipating what’s going to be this month.

So I’ll use an example. One of the months, the most basic month, is all about hydration. What people don’t understand is based on their diet, based on what climate they live in, based on their activity level, their weight, their age, all of our hydration levels are really different. And so we take you through the science of hydration and why it’s so important and explain to you that 70% of your body is made of water and that a huge percentage of Americans are chronically dehydrated, and here’s all the symptoms, from dry skin to lack of energy, to having trouble sleeping, all of these things that happen when you’re dehydrated by 1% or 2%. You get a book that takes about 20 to 25 minutes to read. It’s a very simple language, a lot of stories, a lot of, kind of like, I would say, [how] Malcolm Gladwell writes.

The second thing is a physical tool that we’ve specifically designed and produced to help you learn the new habit. So with hydration, it’s a glass water bottle with this silicone sleeve that has a special way to keep track of how much water you’re drinking.

And then the third thing is the challenge card and a little bracelet, just a very simple color string bracelet that reminds you of your month that you’re on...it’s just a physical reminder of what you’re committed to that month.

“They provide a unique focal point that helps to extend the role of indoor spaces to the outdoors,” says Roya Plauche, principal of the fire-pit designer plodes studio, which is based in Baytown, Texas. “There is something primal yet familiar about sitting around a fire that exudes a comforting and peaceful ambience.”

“When fire is present in a landscape, it draws us in, both visually and physically, ” says Khai Foo, designer and creative director of Toronto-based fire-pit brand Paloform. “It is a design element that is dynamic and engaging, while soothing and mesmerizing.”

Luxury fire pits, which generally range in price from US$2,000 to US$43,000, come in a variety of styles, most of them minimal and modern in design to fit with any architectural style. Higher price tags are a result of size, technology, and brand prestige.

“You would be surprised how well a contemporary fire pit fits into a

classical English mansion,” says Brad Carpenter, CEO of the design firm Solus Decor, which has offices in the metro area of Vancouver and in Surrey, England.

Solus Decor’s newest, The Pacific Rim, is a simple vessel that contains a single central flame surrounded by a selfcirculating ring of water.

“It can be operated during the day as a standalone water feature gently providing ambience, light-flowing sound, and visual appeal with the fire,” he says. “As the sun goes down, you can add the flame to make it a truly spectacular fire and water combination.”

Fueled by wood, natural gas, or propane, fire pits typically are sited in outdoor lounge or seating areas or by swimming pools or outdoor kitchens or gardens.

“They not only provide a unique crucible for the theater of dancing flames, but they also offer year-round outdoor architecture for any outdoor space,” says Simon S. Ray, managing director for Encompass Furniture, which is based in Hampshire, England, and is the U.K. agent for the AK47 brand of fire pits that are produced in Italy. “We’ve installed them everywhere from California gardens notable for their simple desert-planting schemes to London town houses and large holiday homes in the South of France.”

The positioning of fire pits, Plauche says, depends not only on the amount of space but also on the type of living space desired.“For larger outdoor spaces, the fire pit might be the focal point of a formal outdoor setting or a casual moment of pause along an intimate outdoor path,” she says. “For smaller outdoor spaces, a fire pit may be safely positioned and incorporated into an intimate patio space.”

In addition to conventional fire pits, some of which include seats and serve as coffee tables, GlammFire, which is based in Monção, Portugal, has expanded the concept to create bowls of fire that float upon the water like lilies.

AK47’s fire pits, which are fueled by seasoned wood to provide a maximum of heat with a minimum of smoke, are available in a variety of materials, including stainless steel and concrete. Finishes include solid marble or recycled chestnut hardwood surrounds. The fire pits often include bespoke benches complete with integrated log storage.

Ray notes that typical add-ons include a stainless-steel grill for cooking, smoked-glass fire screens, and covers.

Regardless of placement or fuel source, many purchasers opt for electronic ignitions that sync with smart-home systems. And, Foo notes, some opt for adding LED lighting in the vessels.

“We are in the apps age, and the consumer is seeking, more and more, everything that can be a click away from the smartphone, tablet, or remote control,” says Sonia Lopes, chief marketing officer of GlammFire.

CHATTING WITH STUDIO GLASS PIONEER DALE CHIHULY THE SEATTLE- BASED ARTIST KNOWN FOR HIS SPECTACULAR GLASS INSTALLATIONS ON HIS NEWEST COLLECTION AND WHY HE LIKES WORKING WITH A TEAM

ale Chihuly has been creating mesmerizing, beautiful works out of glass for decades, pushing the boundaries of what D glass can look like in intricately designed objects and massive,

breathtaking installations bursting with color in cities and museums around the world.

Home for Chihuly, 79, is Seattle, where Chihuly Merletto, his latest project, was recently featured—virtually—by the Traver Gallery.

Like all of Chihuly’s efforts, Chihuly Merletto is inventive, playful, and beautiful—inspired by ancient Italian cane-working techniques, but showing up in lacy loops within irregular, undulating shapes of glass, like those he began playing with in his original basket series in the 1970s.

Chihuly recently answered questions about his work and his latest collection.

Dale Chihuly: I fell in love with glass in the ’60s, when I was studying interior design and architecture at the University of Washington. My first experiment involved weaving pieces of glass into a textile I was making for my mother’s window. Then on a whim, I tried to blow a bubble out of glass using a regular metal pipe I had in the basement. I didn’t have any training or the right tools, but as soon as I saw that bubble forming, I was hooked.

During a visit to the Washington State History Museum in Tacoma, I explored an exhibition of Northwest Native American woven baskets. Over time, and with the help of gravity, the baskets had evolved into irregularly shaped, slumped forms. I was struck by the beauty and perfection of their imperfection. This moment was pivotal to my approach to glassmaking. The woven baskets inspired me to buck the historic glass-blowing traditions of perfection by pursuing the creation of organic, asymmetrical forms using fire, gravity, and centrifugal force.

I understand that you first began creating “organic and asymmetrical” forms out of glass in your basket series in the late 1970s. What prompted that?

The Chihuly Merletto collection is the latest extension of this series.

What drew you to merletto, the Italian cane-working technique?

A big question to start: Why did you originally turn to glass as your primary medium of expression?

One of the key drivers to my art-making practice is a need to challenge myself and my team. There is a particular energy and satisfaction that comes out of pushing the medium through scale or utilizing techniques that I have never explored.

With merletto, I noticed a similarity between the patterns of the ancient technique and early pencil drawings that I created with a bundle of pencils held in my hand. This similarity inspired me to take on a new challenge, and to explore the merletto technique in a new way…in my way.

Your aim with the collection was to “capture the movement of lace in the glass.” How do you do that?

My organic approach to glassmaking, relying on gravity and centrifugal force, is central to my experiments with the technique and to creating the dynamic, flexible, lacelike patterns that flow freely around the Basket form. Merletto was developed by the Muranese in the 15th century, and historically, Venetian glassmaking strives for perfection and symmetry. The traditional approach to merletto results in more static patterns.

In a video [showing the collection being made] I saw that you draw first,

clutching a handful of pencils, or sometimes using sweeps of colored chalk, or even a pile of ice cubes, and then these wonderful, surprising glass pieces are created. How does the work go from drawing paper to glass art?

I’ve been drawing since I was a student in the ’60s, and I utilize a variety of materials in the process. When I lost the sight in my eye [in a 1976 car accident] and could no longer blow glass myself, I began using drawings to communicate ideas to my team. There is an incredible energy that comes from the artistic dialogue between my drawing and the glass blowing. I like to be on the hotshop pad with the team doing my work while they do theirs; it’s a thrilling experience.

I understand that you work using a team in your glass studio, which seems necessary given the physical labor and size of some of these pieces. Can you tell me more about the team and the creative process?

I learned the team approach to glass blowing while studying at the Venini Glass Factory on the Venetian island of Murano in the ’60s. I quickly adopted this approach and have been fortunate to build a team of skilled artists who help me realize my creative vision. The

size of the team each day depends on the type of work we are doing; larger scale works require more hands on deck. I love the team approach. If art making required that I always work alone, I probably would not have been an artist.

Through the Chihuly Foundation, you have supported artists and youth arts education, and you’ve worked with the elderly, veterans, and the disabled.

Recently you also donated to the Covid-19 Artist Trust Relief Fund to support artists in Washington state.

Why is this important to do?

People in our community and around the world are suffering. We are all affected by the restrictions of the pandemic, and as a nation, we are also experiencing a time of mourning and much-needed reflection.

I choose to be hopeful for positive change and strive to keep my focus on the healing and uplifting power of art, which is especially important in difficult times. My wife, Leslie, and I are grateful for our health and a deeply connected community of colleagues and friends to rely on. In turn, we are honored to support other artists in their pursuits and serve the most vulnerable populations.

SPICE UP YOUR LIFE ( AND YOUR SPICE RACK )

SPRINKLE ON A LOT OF FLAVOR WITH MINIMAL EFFORT

t’s easy to get into a seasoning rut. But if you’re tired of tossing basil and oregano into every sauce, chicken dish, or stew, it’s easier than you think to try out some new and unique flavorings.

“When you’re running out of ways to perk up your recipes, spices are actually your best friend,” says Lauren Moran, the head baker at Eastern Standard Provisions, a gourmet snack brand that produces handcrafted soft pretzels and artisanal salts in South Hamilton, Mass. “In fact, experimenting with spices can transform something that’s typically bland or boring into your new favorite dish.”

Moran’s suggestions are as simple as they are fun.

For example, she urges us to add curry powder to potato salad, celery salt to a hot dog, or cloves to a bowl of morning oatmeal.

“These are all great examples of how a single spice can put a delicious spin on a dish that most people are already comfortable making,” she says.

Ready to move your meals from bland to flavorful? Here are eight spices to add to your rotation:

CARDAMOM

Not only can cardamom be used in sweet or savory dishes, its perfume will permeate your home. “You’ll be amazed at the aroma cardamom can bring to your kitchen,” says Asha Gomez, a chef and Atlanta-based author of I Cook in Color: Bright Flavors From My Kitchen and Around the World. “Open that lid after you’ve steamed rice with cardamom, and the whiff of that steam is magical.”

HARISSA

If you like chili powder blends, harissa is an ideal substitute. “Use it for meat or shake it on hummus, chickpea dishes, or slow-cooked chili,” says Meredith Chen, lead R&D scientist at Simply Organic, a 100% certified organic line of spices, seasoning mixes, and baking flavors in Norway, Iowa.

MADRAS CURRY POWDER

PASTRAMI SPICE

If you love a pastrami on rye, homemade pastrami spice is simple to make—and will amp up any meal.

“The blend is made up of items you most likely have in your pantry,” Johnson says. Specifically “coriander seeds, yellow mustard seeds, brown sugar, smoked paprika, salt, garlic cloves, and black pepper.”

SMOKED PAPRIKA

It’s easy to get in a rut when grilling a steak or roasting vegetables. “If you’re used to seasoning things with salt and pepper, dried garlic and onion, smoked paprika is a great flavor enhancer and adds this unique woodsy flavor,” Chen says. “It doesn’t contain sodium, either, so there’s no additional salt in any dish you make with it.”

SUMAC

This dried, tart red berry is a great dish finisher thanks to the citrus flavor it

evokes, says Jill Donenfeld, co-founder of The Culinistas, a weekly home chef service in New York, Los Angeles, the Hamptons on Long Island, and Aspen, Colo. “You want to think of flavor profiles,” she says. “So something as simple as chicken and broccoli can be enhanced when you differentiate it with an interesting finishing spice like sumac.”

WHITE PEPPER

This fully ripened black pepper has an interesting depth to it. “It’s got a little floral note to it and it’s a little earthy,” Chen says. Hint: If you want to reconfigure a gingerbread recipe, simply add white pepper and anise, and suddenly you have Speculaas batter ready to go in the oven.

Interesting spices can transform a bland dish into something special, and add a new element of flavor to a cooking staple.

ZA’ATAR

There’s been an explosion of interest in this blend of savory, dried herbs that includes sumac, sesame, thyme, sea salt, and oregano. “This is a great zesty option to keep on hand,” Johnson says.

“I suggest using it as a seasoning for meats, vegetables or simply sprinkle it on hummus. I always keep it on hand.”

THE BIGGEST INNOVATORS IN KENTUCKY BOURBON BIG PRODUCERS AND UPSTARTS ALIKE ARE USING TECHNOLOGY AND INGENUITY TO REIMAGINE THE STATE’S WHISKEY

cranking out the same whiskey their distilleries have been making for generations. In reality, it’s a world ripe with innovation from players big and small.

There are doctorate-wielding employees and laboratories stocked with sensory and analysis equipment that would make the most prestigious universities envious.

“There’s lots of innovation happening right now with new process discoveries, from the type and quality of accessible grains, to how the grains are processed, how the mash is made, fermentation, distillation, new barrel technologies and experimentation, and more,” says Danville-based Wilderness Trail Distillery co-founder Pat Heist.

Amid the turmoil of the coronavirus pandemic, this willingness to experiment came to the forefront, with many of Kentucky’s biggest distilleries pivoting to produce hand sanitizer made from high-proof alcohol off their stills.

But many distillers are going far beyond that. At Buffalo Trace Distillery, which has seen enormous success over the past decade, it would be easy to stay comfortable, but according to master distiller Harlen Wheatley, “that would be like burying your head in the sand, which is not our style.”

Instead, the distillery is embracing its willingness to experiment. Warehouse X, for example, is a project that examines maturation conditions in a controlled warehouse.

NEW WAVE & NEW ‘RIFFS’

The founders of Wilderness Trail Distillery entered the industry from a scientific background. The approach has served them well, as their early releases have been among the most highly touted new whiskeys on the market. “Being more scientific about the process allows us to hit each part of the whiskey-making process more precisely,” says Heist, who has a background in microbiology.

For certain upstarts, a willingness to experiment is a fundamental component of their ethos. The legacy producers in Kentucky have a massive advantage in the market, thanks to their name recognition and economies of scale. Distinguishing yourselves is an important factor in achieving success.

This spring, New Riff Distilling released an experimental pair of whiskeys dubbed Backsetter that incorporated peatsmoked grains into its “backset”—the portion of spent grain from a prior mashing run, which is used to help kick-start the next batch and provide consistency. It’s the foundation of the sour mash process, from which the bulk of Kentucky bourbon is made.

Distillers like New Riff are turning to experimentation to distinguish themselves from competition with more name recognition.

A BRIGHT BOURBON FUTURE

At Jim Beam, eighth-generation distiller Freddie Noe’s first spearheaded project was the Little Book series, a collection of experimental blended whiskeys. In one instance, Jim Beam’s Kentucky bourbon was blended together with Canadian rye and corn whiskeys, and in another, the four different Jim Beam-produced Small Batch collection bourbons were blended together: Knob Creek, Booker’s, Baker’s, and Basil Hayden’s.

Maker’s Mark was long the picture of steadfast focus, with only a single product in its lineup. The distillery has shifted to a more experimental mindset in recent years. It began with the release of Maker’s Mark 46, which is finished with a unique maturation process in which 10 seared Frenchoak staves are inserted into already matured bourbon. That led to the development of an expanded Wood-Finishing Series. This fall’s limited release is a blend of three different stave-finished bourbons, a first for the distillery.
