And it therefore stands to reason: The more bedrooms, the more valuable a home is.

That’s why experts recommend that if you’re considering a bedroom renovation, do not combine two smaller rooms into a larger room.

“Removing a bedroom is one of those homeimprovement blunders that can ding a home’s worth, even if it creates a larger bedroom — or other living space — in its place,” writes Amy Hoak, Personal Finance editor for MarketWatch. “The reasoning is simple: The more bedrooms a home has, the higher the

So instead of renovating to combine spaces, renovate or simply redecorate to create defined areas for specific tasks while keeping those smallish rooms.

CREATE A HOME OFFICE: Turn a smaller room into a functional yet stylish spot for doing your work. Separating work life from the bedroom is a good idea for stress levels, as the bedroom should be a destination for relaxation at the end of the day.

DESIGN A PLAYROOM: Many homes have an extra, smaller room that may seem like a good choice for integrating into another room.

Instead, choose to give the kids a dedicated space for their toys and imagination. Coat walls in chalkboard paint, and fill the closet with games and toys to inspire creativity.

DESIGNATE TV TIME AND SPACE: A current trend: homes where living rooms do not have a television. So if you have a smaller room, perhaps this can be both a functional guest bedroom as well as the spot where you and the family enjoy an occasional show on TV. Consider a wall-mounted television if space is particularly limited.
