are to cut your home energy bill by 70 percent or more? Tired of power outages, grid dependence, friends going on about the dire consequences of burning fossil fuels?

Sounds like you’re in the market for solar power. Like other renewables including wind, water and biomass, unlimited energy harvested from the sun has long had its supporters as a future replacement for the world’s finite supplies of gas, coal and oil.

But the future is now for nearly half a million homeowners nationwide.

Second only to natural gas in new generating capacity this past year, some 140,000 solar installations were added to residential rooftops from sunny California and Arizona to far less likely New England. Photovoltaic power stations — “solar farms” with acres of interconnected silicon panels that automatically track the sun’s path across the sky — convert its rays into enough electricity to feed the needs of several small cities.

Noiseless, non-polluting and increasingly competitive in price with traditional energy sources, PV cells are rapidly becoming major

players in the power generating game either as stand-alone systems or tied into the local power grid.

Free energy from our own private star is only one reason solar has come out of the shadows, so to speak. Advocates point out that cell technology has made giant strides in the past few years both in efficiency and lifespan.

Properly maintained, cells will gather sunlight for up to 30 years at peak capacity, while panel prices have dipped 60 percent since 2011 thanks in large part to mass production and market competition.

In addition to battery-stored electricity for home consumption, solar water-heating units and pool heaters have gained significant market share. As the world’s fastest growing energy source, power from the sun may soon match the trajectory of cell phones — from a 1990s novelty to world supremacy now.

Quick tip

Tying into the grid Simply by connecting your rooftop solar array to the utility meter, you can cut energy bills to the bone as the grid tie-in literally runs your meter backwards when the system generates more power than it uses. Called net-metering, it allows you to sell excess electricity or buy it as needed. Be aware, though, that net-metering regulations vary by state and province, and the service is not available in all areas.

Leasing offers alternative path to alternative power In theory, converting sunlight into energy takes only four working parts: a photovoltaic panel, inverter, charger and battery. Problem is, all those gadgets cost money, as much as $40,000 for a typical home installation.

solar companies, prices can be reduced to near zero through leasing arrangements in which the company covers installation costs and the homeowner pays a set rate for electricity along with a rental charge.

The result: Companies collect any tax rebates while

homeowners’ monthly bills are less than their previous utility payment. Although contracts vary, most stipulate a long-term lease agreement and guaranteed power-purchase rate. It’s a good idea if you’re short of upfront cash, less so if you plan to move in the near future.

Cue the special effects to create a unique look for walls

here they are. The walls.

They’re white or they’re beige, but they’re just standing there, holding up the ceiling. You may have splurged on furniture, rugs or lovely drapes, but those walls are doing nothing at all to help the decor.

Of course, your decorating goals may seem out of reach. You’d like to recreate the feel of that Tuscan villa where you vacationed. Or maybe you’d like a game room with edgy metallic highlights. In either case, the walls can help. With a few tricks you turn them into everything from wood to marble to linen to Venetian plaster. It’s all done with decorative and faux (false) finishes, many of which are surprisingly easy for the do-ityourselfer to produce with practice and a little time.

Let’s say you’re after the soft, antique plaster look of a country inn outside of Paris. Use a good primer first. Then apply a soft grey latex and let dry. Next, put

a slightly darker shade of paint in one corner of a paint tray and in another corner some translucent glaze. Dip a roller so that each end is covered with either paint or glaze. Then roll in all directions on the wall in 6-by-6-foot sections.

While the paint is still wet, ball up a square of cheesecloth, and “pull off” some of the paint/glaze mix by pressing the cheesecloth into the paint. The result is an aged, mottled look that is intimate and charming.

The look of fine silk-covered walls is achieved by pressing a wrinkled 1-mil-thick plastic drop cloth onto a wet-glazed wall, and then slowly pulling it off. The striations and color variations are reminiscent of formal watered silk.

Even the thick stucco look of the Southwest can be achieved by using a mixture of joint compound and paint in a “mashed potatoes” slurry. Apply it to the wall with a trowel, swirl thinly, and let dry. Later add a second darker colored “stucco” mix to add depth and age.

Quick tip

Give yourself an extension Glazes are wonderful. Their translucent quality allows light to penetrate through them and onto the colors below, making a pleasing reflected glow. But glazes dry quickly, and that limits the size of the area in which you can work. Michelangelo knew this and used linseed oil as an extender. You can extend your work time with purchased glaze extenders recommended for specific coatings.

get a little practice on a 5-by-5-foot piece of plywood. Start by covering the entire surface with a good latex primer, then block off four or five areas in which you’ll practice your painting techniques.

Ragging: Paint base color. Let dry. With ball of cheesecloth, blot darker glaze onto surface in random patterns.

brush, drag darker glaze in long strokes downward, followed by horizontal strokes crossing over.

Woods: Mahoganies, oaks … each requires a special technique. Here’s one basic approach: Use a warm coral or orange undercoat. Follow with a lighter or darker glaze in an earthy tone. Use a fine-toothed comb to run through the glaze, and a special angled-brush to create arcing grain patterns.
