We remember the names of the most destructive hurricanes — Andrew, Katrina, Sandy, Irene (pictured here), among others — but even a tropical storm can test a roof.

All along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts, as far north as New York and New England, people are learning the hard truth that even tropical-storm winds of 70 miles per hour pack enough punch to rip off shingles, tear down gutters and toss tree limbs through their home’s protective helmet. Major hurricanes like Andrew or Katrina, with gusts measured well into triple digits, easily match a tornado for wrecking-ball terror. At the top end, it’s almost impossible to secure a roof from the catastrophic fury of a Category 3 hurricane or higher. But there are ways to limit damage from lesser threats, some of them mandated by beefed-up building codes and others through basic design choices. As a rule, researchers say, a four-sided hip roof stands up to a hurricane’s lifting force far better than a roof with gabled ends. Flat roofs are more
