Winter in the rye

T

he success of winter pastures is in direct correlation to the amount of rainfall. Last year’s incredibly mild winter in Marion County brought ample sustenance to the perennial Bahia and Bermuda grasses, leaving the county rich in greenery. Annual Ryegrass is often used with the warm-season grasses to extend the grazing season.

To the end of the year, the Old Farmer’s Almanac is predicting colder, rainy and possibly windy conditions for Florida. Before the winter solstice, tropical moisture is expected to meet colder, more stable air sweeping southward as frontal storms. Annual Ryegrass grows best when nighttime temperatures drop below 60 degrees. With the first gratuitous cold front in November, plan to overseed warm season perennial lawns and permanent grass pastures with Ryegrass. This emerald green herbage will grow over a wide range of soil pH levels but grows best at a pH level of 6.0 to 7.0.

Only buy seed varieties adapted to the Southeastern United States as northern varieties will be easily damaged by leaf rust in Florda’s milder temperatures and heavy dew. Seeding rates range from 20 to 30 pounds per acre. Shop around for the best prices. The feed and hardware stores in and around Ocala tend to price 50 pound bags much lower than the nurseries at the big name brand stores.

ave you visited your local hardware store in search of a standard 40-watt bulb recently? If so, chances are you didn’t find exactly what you were after, and for good reason. Six years ago, lawmakers passed a federal energy bill phasing out energy-wasting bulbs, and as of 2013, inefficient 40- and 60-watt bulbs — which represented over half the market — could no longer be produced or imported for markets in the United States.

Now, consumers have three major types of bulbs from which to choose: ■ IMPROVED INCANDESCENTS

that use 28 percent less energy than old versions.

■ COMPACT FLUORESCENT LAMPS

(CFLS), which typically last 10 times longer than incandescents and burn cooler.

Recycle those bulbs Small amounts of toxic mercury can be released when CFLs break, or if CFLs are improperly disposed. LED bulbs don’t contain mercury but do contain nickel, lead and even traces of arsenic. So don’t toss burned-out bulbs — recycle them. ■ LIGHT-EMITTING DIODES (LEDS), which provide energy savings of at least 75 percent over incandescents, may last up to 25 times longer and generate less heat than other bulbs.

The new bulbs use less power to give off the same amount of light, which means with this improved technology comes new terminology. Consumers no longer buy bulbs based on their power in watts. Bulbs are now rated on their light output, expressed in lumens.

And the changes are anticipated to help consumers where it matters: The new energy bill is projected to ultimately save Americans $13 billion on annual energy bills and help protect the environment.

Confused by the changes? The U.S. Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency

have an easy answer. No matter the technology, bulbs with the ENERGY STAR label meet strict guidelines for energy efficiency and performance.

According to the EPA, if every home in the U.S. replaced one incandescent light bulb with an ENERGY STAR compact fluorescent, the energy savings could light more than 3 million homes and prevent greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to those of more than 800,000 cars annually.
