Located in the heart of the 1.8 million acre San Juan National Forest and nestled under 1,500-foot Hermosa Cliffs, The Silverpick Lodge sits along the San Juan Scenic Skyway at 9,000 feet above sea level and one mile from Purgatory Ski Resort. It is located halfway between, and 25 miles from, both Durango and Silverton, Colorado. The area records 300 days of sunshine and 200 inches of snow per year. The woods, which are just across the street, are full of game and the streams are full of trout. Hiking, boating, mountain biking, rock climbing, four-wheeling and horseback riding are the predominant daytime activities. The small town of Durango, with its highly educated and diverse population, offers an unusually sophisticated cultural, sports, and culinary scene. The lodge is one of very few commercial properties in the North County Resort District. With tight zoning restrictions and high buildings costs, new resorts will be very limited. Existing resorts are set to benefit from a steady increase of new tourists with the ski area’s ongoing improvement program, which is already seeing increased skier counts. At nearly 20,000 square feet, the Silverpick Lodge houses 13 guest rooms, 18 baths, a game room, a tv room, three hot tubs, a sauna and steam room, a massage room, a breakfast/private dining room, and a 95-person occupancy family room with kitchen, dining facilities, and private entrance. Maximum occupancy is 48 people. The lodge consistently books out a year ahead for weddings, family reunions and groups of all kinds. Non refundable deposits of 50% are taken at booking. Condominiums in the development, some managed by the lodge and others independently, house another 50 people. The five-star restaurant located within the lodge, the Sow’s Ear, is among the best in the region. The Sow’s Ear has a well established and well healed clientele of full-time residents, second homeowners and tourists. With massive windows on three sides, the restaurant offers the most stunning views in the Four Corners region. It has a maximum occupancy of 144 people and operates 5 nights a week in season. The Sow’s Ear is closed to the public, but open for private parties, in April and November. The average check is upwards of $60 and gratuities generally exceed 20%.
