EXPLORE MASSACHUSETTS: A Rich History Meets A Prosperous Future As the winter snow begins to melt and spring begins to awaken, life becomes more exciting in the Northeastern part of the United States. For months the nor’easters have held New Englander’s at bay, but now the sun is beginning to shine and it’s time to get back outside and explore all that these states have to offer.

At the heart of New England is Massachusetts, bordered by Rhode Island and Connecticut to the south, New York to the west, Vermont and New Hampshire to the north, and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. Massachusetts is the 7th smallest state by land area, but the 15th most populous (U.S. Census Bureau, December 2015), with an estimated 6.8 million residents in 2015, and the most populated of the New England states. Regardless of its size, Massachusetts packs a punch with a multitude of activities to keep you busy.

Steeped in history, the Bay State has played a significant historical, cultural, and commercial role, beginning with the first colony established in Plymouth in 1620, to one of the most prestigious and oldest scholastic institutes, Harvard University, founded in 1636, to America’s most infamous case of mass hysteria in 1692 with the Salem Witch Trials. Before the Civil War, Massachusetts was a center for temperance, transcendentalism, and abolitionist movements. In the late 18th century, Boston became known as the “Cradle of Liberty” for the uprising that led to the American Revolution and the independence of the United States from Great Britain. In 1786, Revolutionary War Veteran Daniel Shays led Shays’ Rebellion, an uprising to protect war veterans, prompting the United States Constitutional Convention, and eventually the signing of the Constitution. It is also home to several political dynasties, including the Adams and Kennedys. And today Massachusetts is still making history. In 2004, as a result of the decision by the state’s Supreme Judicial Court, Massachusetts became the first state to legally recognize same-sex marriage.

WESTERN MASSACHUSETTS

Natural beauty abounds in every direction in Western Massachusetts, from the rolling green hills of the Berkshires, to the serene landscape along the Mohawk Trail, to the fertile Connecticut River valley.

Framed by picturesque college towns like Northampton and Amherst, Western Massachusetts offers the unity and diversity many people seek. With a plethora of things to do, it is easy to check off the to-do list.

In 1777, George Washington and Henry Knox selected Springfield for the site of the National Armory, built atop a bluff overlooking the Connecticut River. Washington and Knox agreed that Springfield provided the ideal location — beside the great river locale — because it could be easily defended. For the next 200 years, the armory would bring prosperity and innovation to Springfield and the surrounding towns. After the American Revolution, a rebellion led by Daniel Shays culminated in a battle at the National Armory. Shays and his followers hoped to win government reform, including the issue of new currency and help for Continental soldiers who had incurred debts while fighting. Shays’ Rebellion is often considered the turning point in the formation of the United States Constitution. Although crushed, this rebellion led Thomas Jefferson to declare that “a little revolution every twenty years or so is a good thing.”

Connecticut River Valley

Peppered throughout Western Massachusetts are several unique locales like Tanglewood and Mohawk Trail. Tanglewood is a classic music venue, and since 1937 it has been home to the Boston Symphony Orchestra. It also hosts contemporary music and jazz festivals during the spring and summer months, so bring a blanket, pack a picnic basket, a bottle of wine, and relax as the music fills the mountain air.

Mohawk Trail is another must-see! It once was a Native American trade route, but today it serves as a 63-mile touring road across 50,000 acres of state forests, parks, and reservations.

Some of the events to enjoy in the upcoming months are: MASS Gatherings, May 28th and 29th with the MASS Music Festival featuring performers like the Gin Blossoms and Deer Trick, and MASS Races with options to run in half marathons, 10K, and 5K races, with all proceeds benefiting military causes and charities.

In Pittsfield, the First Fridays Artswalk occur on the first Friday of every month.

This hidden gem is a region of dichotomies, with urban grit in the declining industrial areas, and cosmopolitan flavor emerging with the close proximity to Boston. The numerous colleges, art galleries, museums, vibrant downtown, and food from all over the globe are making their mark on Central Massachusetts. As Boston’s growing suburbs have begun to envelop the area east of Worcester, the west remains heavily forested.

The main city of Worcester is the second largest city in Massachusetts. Home to nine colleges and universities, but without the “college town” feel, it has a low crime rate, several parks, green spaces, small bodies of water, and tree-lined streets, making it the place to raise a family.

One of most intriguing times in U.S. history came during The Salem Witch Trials.

In January of 1692, the daughter and niece of Reverend Samuel Parris fell ill.

With no signs of improvement, the village doctor was called in to examine the girls. His diagnosis: bewitchment. In doing so, he put into motion the forces that would ultimately result in the false accusations of witchcraft and the hanging of 19 men and women, with even more dying in prison. Life in Salem would forever be changed, and it would go down in history as the first mass hysteria. At the Salem Witch Museum, visitors can experience the drama of that dark time though 13 life-size stage sets, figures, lighting, and a stirring narration as they are witness to the web of lies and intrigue of the Salem Witch Hunt.

Concord. Riders, including Paul Revere, alerted the countryside that the British were coming, and when the British troops arrived in Lexington, they were greeted by 77 Minutemen in formation on the village green. Shots were exchanged, killing several Minutemen, and as the British moved on to Concord, they were once again greeted by 500 Minutemen and routed to the North Bridge. As the British retreated back to Boston, they were attacked again by thousands of militiamen along the roads, causing several casualties and bruised egos. After the Battles of Lexington and Concord, the war had begun. The Concord Museum brings Concord’s remarkable story to life with a distinguished collection of American treasures, including the famous “one, if by land” lantern. Visit other historic sites like Lexington Battle Green, the North Bridge, made famous for “the shot heard round the world,” along with several other important historical sites.

If you love history like we do, then you must visit The Greater Merrimack Valley.

Home to the Battles of Lexington and Concord, many believe these two sites were the start of the Revolutionary War. In February 1775, British Parliament declared Massachusetts to be in a state of rebellion. Or take the 2.5 mile Freedom Trail Walking tour and visit historical places like the Bunker Hill Monument, where the famous order “Don’t fire until you see the whites of their eyes” was issued, or grab a pint at Paul Revere’s stomping grounds, or visit “Old Ironsides” in Boston Harbor, or pay homage to the first woman to step off the Mayflower at King Chapel Burial Grounds, or view some of the rarest and most important documents in U.S. history, including John Adams’ personal library at the Boston Public Library.

Don’t forget, Boston is “wicked” smart with over 50 colleges and universities. It is an international center of higher education and medicine, including prestigious
