2025 IS HERE , and we are excited to launch the latest and greatest version of Real Maine Weddings! This new issue results from our continuing desire to offer the best Maine wedding content available to our readers and more valuable opportunities for our industry partners. We have also looked closely at the years that followed the pandemic in 2020. The magazine industry has been knocked sideways in the last four years. Like everything else, paper and printing costs have skyrocketed, and we have identified new goals, and changed course. This will also improve our carbon footprint moving forward, and we are grateful for that. I am excited about this new format and hope you will be, too!

We had a record number of submissions for this issue, and we are grateful for the beauty and talent represented in the images we have featured. Keep an eye on realmaineweddings.com as well! Additional content will be featured there throughout the year. Our featured weddings and styled shoots are once again arranged in the geographic regions highlighted by the Maine Office of Tourism: Aroostook County, Downeast & Acadia, Greater Portland & Casco Bay, The Kennebec Valley, Maine’s Lakes and Mountains, Maine’s Midcoast and Islands, The Maine Beaches, and The Maine Highlands. These regions each have unique charm and amenities for couples planning the perfect Maine wedding. We hope that highlighting these regions not only makes it easier for couples planning their weddings, but for anyone interested in learning more about what Maine has to offer its residents and guests.

As always, feel free to reach out to editor@realmaineweddings.com. I’d love to hear from you!

Sincerely,

where to begin

HOW EXCITING!

You are recently engaged and starting to plan your wedding. There are so many moving parts and possibilities. Where do you start? Here are some tips and suggestions to help you get started. Remember: there are no hard and fast rules to wedding planning anymore. Sit down with your partner and determine what the essential pieces are to you. Everything else will fall into place.

Did you know?

Whether you are a native “Mainah” or planning a destination wedding, thank you for choosing to have your wedding here and helping keep Maine moving in this significant way! Weddings in Maine represent $1,000,000 in annual revenue. Everything you spend on venue rentals, catering, hair & makeup, transportation, equipment rentals, photography, videography, etc., supports a small local business. Every dollar goes back into the local economy, and we love you for that.

CURVING YOUR CEREMONY CHAIRS

BUDGETING 101

Every wedding is different, and you’ll discover what is essen-

semi-circle creates a more intimate ceremony and helps all your guests see you. When the chairs are curved ever so slightly around the ceremony spot:

It creates a cozier experience for your guests. Your guests will hear everything better as the sound bounces off the curved rows of chairs. The guests at the ends of each row will be able to see better, and no one feels left out. You’ll be able to see your guests better. It looks beautiful and elegant in photos. And, best of all, the rounded edges of rows make it feel like you’re getting a big hug during the ceremony!

Three things to consider when hiring your wedding planner/coordinator:

1. PERSONALITY. Meet in person or Zoom with them and get to know them. Do you jive with that person and feel comfortable? 2. TRUST. After meeting, do you feel confident they will have your back and make the best decisions for your big day?

3. REVIEWS/REFERENCES. Check out their social media and wedding websites for reviews from past clients!

— Renee Strange-Farnham, Strange Events

It is customary to feed the professionals you have hired for your wedding celebration. This team varies but often includes your event planner , photographer, band or DJ, and officiant . Talk to your caterer about the best way to feed the team efficiently — timing is everything! Your caterer can also walk you through the best options for vendor meals. Sometimes the team eats the same meal that the guests are having. Sometimes a separate buffet area is set up for the team members to eat on their schedule. Figure out what works best for your particular situation.

HONEYMOON ESSENTIALS

You are thinking ahead and planning your honeymoon. Good idea! Where to start? A travel agent:

1) saves you time by doing the research for you, 2) has access to exclusive promotions, 3) is your advocate if anything goes wrong on the trip.

PHOTOGRAPHY:

Getting Started!

You might think you should be able to compare photographers the way you’d compare plumbers — who can do the job at the price you want to pay and guarantee it will turn out the way you want. Considerations such as personality, products, artistic styles, how working with us will make you feel on your wedding day, and how you’ll feel with the finished product afterward should be on your radar.

We all have different pricing structures, shooting styles, and ways of interacting with our clients. Some photographers charge a low base price and let you add options to customize your finished package. Others have an all-inclusive

price, which may or may not include prints, files, albums, or other products.  Some won’t share pricing until they meet with you, and some photographers write custom quotes for each wedding. Your wedding will be different from any other we’ll see this year, so please forgive us if we spend a little more time trying to understand how we can help you before just quoting you a price. You’re not a leaky faucet to us, and you probably want more than just a washer replaced!

Congratulations!

YOU’VE DECIDED TO GET MARRIED IN MAINE. WONDERING WHAT’S NEXT?

NO WORRIES! WE’VE GOT YOU COVERED WITH OUR TOP 50 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW TO GET HITCHED IN MAINE WITHOUT A HITCH!

ILLUSTRATIONS BY JOSH ALVES & LILLY ALVES

If you are planning a wedding in Maine from thousands of miles away, it helps to have a local person steer you in the right direction. If you don’t have friends or family in the area, consider hiring a MAINE WEDDING PLANNER .

SCOPE OUT TRANSPORTATION options early. When you plan your Maine wedding, remember there aren’t multiple airports, bus stations, or public transportation venues for your guests to choose from.

2 LEAVE TIME for people “from away” to get lost.

If people are driving, provide SUGGESTED REST STOPS. I-95 can go on for miles without one, so be prepared.

Coastal Maine is a popular place in the summer, and Route 1 can come to a standstill, making travel time between the church and the reception longer than planned. 5

If you’re flying in from out of state, KEEP YOUR WEDDING ATTIRE ON HAND. Pack it in your carry-on bag and have it pressed when you arrive.

PUT SIGNS UP along the road in rural areas so your guests won’t get lost.

BE AWARE OF TRAFFIC.

CONSIDER PROVIDING TRANSPORTATION. If people are coming in from out of town for your wedding, consider hiring a party bus, van, or even a trolley to take guests from their hotels to the wedding ceremony, to the reception (if it’s in a different location), and back to their hotels. It will save on parking spaces and offer your guests a safe alternative to driving.

& reservations

If you are renting tenting, tables, chairs, etc., doublecheck the details of your RENTAL DELIVERY, especially if you are having a rural wedding. It may be easier for your rental company to deliver your order earlier in the week, giving you more time to set things up.

10

There are many beautiful, natural places in Maine to get married without access to a restroom. Plan accordingly to have RESTROOM TRAILERS available for your guests.

11

Rural areas can lack a large number of available accommodations. Be prepared to BOOK ROOMS AND GUEST HOUSES well in advance.

Planning an island wedding?

Remember these two words: FERRY SCHEDULE. You don’t want your guests to miss the boat.

Give your guests MAINE-MADE FAVORS

It’s an easy way to be unique and send your guests home with a reminder of the time they spent with you.

Want to send your guests home with a small piece of Maine? How about a sapling? The Maine state tree is the EASTERN WHITE PINE. Have your guests plant the tree and help the environment.

If you’re getting married in the fall, book hotel rooms early. Autumn is “LEAF PEEPER” SEASON in New England, and accommodations book up fast with out-of-state tourists.

SERVE LOCAL FAVORITES like Maine microbrews, blueberries, whoopie pies, and fiddleheads. Many people can’t get these things where they live.

Lobster is a Maine tradition, but it’s messy! If you plan to serve lobster, consider serving it “LAZY LOBSTER” style — pre-cracked and ready to eat. It will keep your tables and guests tidy.

Maine summers are short! Be sure to BOOK YOUR VENDORS WELL IN ADVANCE. Twelve to eighteen months in advance is not too early.

21 If you plan a Maine wedding from afar, try to MAKE AT LEAST ONE TRIP to your destination site and meet with all of the companies you have booked.

VISIT THE CEREMONY SITE during the same time of day and year that you have scheduled your ceremony and make notes of external or environmental noise. There’s nothing like a foghorn to ruin the moment.

16 One great way to have an authentic and greener wedding is to PURCHASE SUPPLIES LOCALLY Incorporate Maine food, drink, and favors.

Figure out what flowers are in season in Maine for your wedding. Using SEASONAL FLOWERS in your bouquet and decor will save you money and will still look beautiful.

If you are planning a destination wedding in Maine, a great place to start is to CONTACT A LOCAL WEDDING PLANNER in the area you’d like to be wed. They’ll know all of the helpful details to get you going!

Maine is just as beautiful in the winter as it is in the summer. CONSIDER A WINTER WEDDING in the woods or on the ski slopes of one of Maine’s premiere ski resorts.

Have a PHOTO BOOTH at your wedding. It’s still fun, and people love it. There are many great photo booth rental companies that offer a variety of options.

Since going barefoot on the beach is a norm, offer your guests PRE-MOISTENED TOWELETTES so that they can wash their feet before putting their shoes back on. 26

Planning a backyard wedding? Call the local town hall to see if there is any CONSTRUCTION PLANNED for the area around the time of your wedding. Summer in Maine is also road construction season.

It’s also a good idea when planning a backyard wedding to LET THE NEIGHBORS KNOW what time it’ll take place, so they’ll be sure to cease mowing their lawns during the ceremony.

BRING A PAIR OF SHOES to wear during the scenic photoshoot on the rocky coast of Maine. The last thing you need on your wedding day is a sprained ankle.

Planning a beach wedding?

NIX THE IDEA OF A LONG TRAIN on your wedding dress. Delicate fabric doesn’t mix well with sand and seaweed. If you are going to take beach photos, make sure your BUSTLE keeps your dress from dragging in the sand.

Beach weddings have a casual feel, so why not SAY “NO” TO STILETTOS and wingtips and choose flip-flops?

The weather can change quickly in Maine. If you plan on having an OUTDOOR WEDDING, have an inside space ready as a backup.

Planning an outdoor wedding? Rent a SOUND SYSTEM. You want your guests to be able to hear your heartfelt vows.

37

If you are planning a romantic ceremony outside on the coast, be aware that it can get quite WINDY. Make sure your hairstyle pulls your hair away from your face to keep from holding it back with your hand throughout the vows.

If you’re worried about bugs, put a bottle of INSECT REPELLENT on each table at the reception and make use of citronella candles when decorating.

If your ceremony is in a church without a cooling system or outside in a hot area, have PAPER FANS for your guests to cool themselves.

BLACK FLY season runs from mid-May to early July. MOSQUITOS can be an issue, too. Try not to schedule your ceremony during the buggiest times of day — like dusk — if you are having an outdoor wedding.

Two words. MUD SEASON. If you’re getting married outside in the spring, beware.

42 Summer evenings can be chilly in Maine. Plan on renting PATIO HEATERS if people are going to be outside in the dark, especially on the coast, where it can be windy.

On the coast it can get especially chilly at night in summer. Remind guests to PACK A SWEATER.

BRING AN UMBRELLA If it’s not going to rain, you can use it as shade.

licenses & permits

BOTH PEOPLE GETTING MARRIED must visit the town office in person to apply for a marriage license. If either of you were married before, bring a copy of your divorce decree. You do not need to apply in the town where the wedding is planned. Different rules apply depending on where you are from, so check out maine. gov for information.

A Maine marriage license is valid for 90 DAYS

Licensed to Wed

GETTING MARRIED IN MAINE? YOU NEED A LICENSE IN ORDER TO MAKE IT LEGAL. HERE’S HOW.

If you are getting married at a PUBLIC PLACE, such as a park or a beach, check to see if you need permits, especially for alcohol.

Getting married in the OFF-SEASON (aka winter) may save you money on the reception site and the vendors you choose.

W E KNOW WH AT WE’RE TA L K I N

There are only so many Saturdays in the summer! Consider having a wedding on ANOTHER DAY OF THE WEEK, like a Friday or Sunday — especially if the venue you want to use is already booked.

It is an urban myth that throwing rice at weddings is harmful to birds, but it does make a very real mess. Think about another FESTIVE KIND OF SEND-OFF: blow bubbles, play musical instruments, throw birdseed, or light sparklers.

FILE MARRIAGE INTENTIONS: The first step in obtaining a marriage license is to record the marriage intentions in writing. Both of you must sign the intentions stating you are free to marry.

WHERE TO FILE: If you are both Maine residents, file your intentions at the municipal office in the town or city where at least one of you resides.

If only one of you resides in Maine, then both of you must file your intentions at the municipal office in the town or city where you hold residency.

If neither of you is a resident of Maine, you can file intentions at any municipal office in Maine.

If either of you happen to be divorced, remember to bring a copy of your divorce decree. If you don’t have one, this can be obtained from the district court where the decree was issued. This needs to be an original document issued by the court with an embossed seal, not a photocopy. Present this to the clerk when you apply for your license and you will be good to go!

Once your intentions are filed and the license is issued, you are free to marry anywhere within the state.

TUOBA sage advice

ISSUING LICENSE: There is no waiting period in the state of Maine. Once your intentions to marry are filed, the license may be issued immediately with your signatures. The license must be used within 90 days (not three months) from the date the intentions were filed and can only be used in the state of Maine.

AFTER CEREMONY: The person who performed the ceremony is responsible for completing the appropriate section of your marriage license. This includes obtaining the signatures of two witnesses (traditionally your maid of honor and best man) plus the signature of the officiant.

FILLING OUT & FILING: The marriage license must be completed in black ink only. The officiant is responsible for filing the license with the municipal clerk at the municipality where the license was issued. They have seven days from when the ceremony took place to file. Once it’s filed, you’re officially married.

BOOTHBAY PLAYHOUSE

Completed in 1937 and tucked away on Route 27 in Boothbay, ME, the Boothbay Playhouse barn theater hosted local, regional, and national talent for over 80 years. The Playhouse was also featured as a point of interest in the June 1968 issue of National Geographic. The 1930’s renovation of the then state-of-the-art barn theater included a fly house and modern theater lighting. Owners John and Sara Berkeley acquired The Boothbay Playhouse in September 2020 while searching for the perfect venue for their own wedding. When they happened across the Playhouse they fell in love with the antique building and had finally found the perfect venue.  Not only did the first chapter of their lives together begin, but so did the next chapter in the story of The Boothbay Playhouse.

WEDDING TRENDS FOR 2025 AND BEYOND

EMBRACING MOCHA MAGIC & ELEVATED ELEGANCE

JACKIE WATSON OF JACLYN WATSON EVENTS OFFERS HER THOUGHTS ON WEDDING TRENDS IN 2025

AS WE LOOK AHEAD in 2025 and beyond, weddings take on fresh ideas and elevated styles. Whether you’re dreaming of an intimate gathering or a big celebration, this year’s trends are all about creating unforgettable moments that feel personal and timeless.

THE COLOR OF THE YEAR: MOCHA MOUSSE

Pantone has named Mocha Mousse the 2025 Color of the Year. This versatile shade can inspire a range of creative ideas. Its warm, rich tone feels grounding and elegant, perfect for creating a timeless and welcoming atmosphere. Mocha pairs beautifully with soft hues like ivory, blush, and sage, or you can take a bolder route alongside deep burgundy or navy.

Couples are also exploring palettes that feel luxurious yet approachable. Some favorites include:

Earthy neutrals like sand, taupe, and champagne paired with Mocha for a tonal, sophisticated look. Muted jewel tones like dusty emerald, burnt sienna, and slate blue for a cozy yet elegant vibe.

Playful pops of color like citrusy orange or sunny marigold for a cheerful touch in modern designs.

Mocha Mousse 17-1230

FLORAL TRENDS: SOFT MEETS STATEMENT

In 2025, florals are all about contrast and texture. Couples are leaning into designs that feel lush yet intentional. Picture arrangements featuring:

Earthy blooms like cappuccino roses, chocolate cosmos, and toffee-colored ranunculus.

Delicate accents like bleached fern, dried lunaria, and bunny tail grass for a touch of whimsy.

Large installations create dramatic focal points, such as oversized arches or hanging floral chandeliers filled with wisteria, that will inspire your guests.

LIGHTING TRENDS: THE KEY TO AMBIANCE

Lighting continues to be the unsung hero of wedding design. In 2025, it’s all about layering. Couples are opting for multiple lighting elements to transform their spaces.

Twinkling light canopies that light up the whole ceiling.

Statement chandeliers with intricate designs to wow your guests.

Candles of varying heights and colors add dimension and a romantic glow.

String lights and lanterns remain popular for outdoor weddings, but we’re also seeing an uptick in creative backdrops and floating candles in water elements.

TRENDING TUNES

COUPLES TAKE EXTRA CARE WITH THEIR WEDDING SONGS AND PLAYLISTS

THE MUSIC AND SONGS you select for key parts of your wedding ceremony set the tone and represent your feelings about the day and the special people celebrating with you. DJ Jason Strycharz of The Music Man DJ Service offers insight into wedding music trends, and DJ Kevin Durand of Double Platinum Celebrations lists the current trending wedding songs for each special moment during your reception.

FIRST DANCE

I’m seeing more “classic” selections for first dances this year than in previous years. I’m not sure if couples are gravitating towards the great songs of the mid-century or if more couples are “old souls,” but some of the most popular first dance songs I’ve seen this year are Etta James’ “At Last,” Elvis’s “Can’t Help Falling in Love” and Elton John “Your Song.” However, many “Swifties” are still out there, so “Lover” by Taylor Swift is still popular.

PARENT DANCES

I see less variance with parent dances, but some changes remain. Classics like Rascall Flatts’s “My Wish” and Lee Ann Womack’s “I Hope You Dance” are

still popular. However, I have seen songs that are more upbeat, whimsical, and fun for parent dances, like Phil Collins’s “You’ll Be In My Heart” from the Tarzan soundtrack or Van Morrison’s “Days Like This.”

MOTHER-DAUGHTER DANCE

One recent trend is to showcase both motherdaughter and father-daughter dances. Many couples wanted to recognize their mother and father with a special dance this year.

CEREMONY

The “Bridgerton” vibe is still trendy: current pop songs covered by a string quartet. This provides a polished and sophisticated atmosphere before a ceremony but still adds fun.

POST CEREMONY

I see many couples putting more emphasis on the songs we play during cocktail hour and dinner hour. This allows couples to share their musical tastes during those moments, promoting conversation and catching up while saving all the great dancing tracks until later.

POPULAR WEDDING TRENDS

1. Pre-dinner dance set: A quick dance session before dinner service begins.

2. Table dash: Couples run from table to table for quick photos using the length of a song. It’s a fun way to maximize dancing time later in the night.

3. Intelligent uplighting: Controlled by software, these lighting setups have been a hit for enhancing a venue’s ambiance.

4. On-the-fly remixes: DJs increasingly use software to create live, custom remixes during dance sets. It’s a clever way to energize guests by giving familiar songs a fresh twist.

ALL-INCLUSIVE Choosing the Right

All-Inclusive resorts throughout Mexico and the Caribbean have become extremely popular for both honeymoons and destination weddings, but it should be known that they’re not all created equal. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes, so choosing the right all-inclusive resort for your style can be a complex equation. To get you started, we’ve broken down the basics for you here. So, take some time to discuss as a couple which of these are must-have features, and then let your travel advisor guide you to your ideal all-inclusive resort.

CLEANLINESS

In today’s world, cleanliness is a critical factor in choosing your resort. It’s important to feel safe and secure at your destination so that you can relax and enjoy your wedding or honeymoon for all it’s worth. Most resorts have recently upped their game when it comes to onsite hygiene, implementing new health and safety protocols that include reduced capacity, touchless check-ins, frequent cleaning of public spaces and much more.

QUA LIT Y

Just like any hotel, the star rating of an all-inclusive resort is a general indicator of the overall quality. Properties can range from moderate to deluxe to luxury. Thankfully, most resorts are typically impressive, since they want you to become a frequent visitor. So even the lower-rated properties

are 10 times fancier than anything you’ll find next to an interstate. Just know, the higher rating the resort has, the better the food and drinks will be.

RESORT F ORMAT

Most all-inclusive resorts fall into three categories: family-friendly, a dults-only a nd c ouples-only. Family-friendly resorts cater to everyone, although some offer sections within the property that are restricted to adults. If you definitely do not want kids around on the honeymoon, check out the adults-only or couples-only options. The difference between those two: couples-only is more romantic, while adults-only caters more to partiers.

Sunset in the Seychelles

LATE-NIGHT E NTERTAINMENT

Some resorts really heat up after dark. If you are a social couple looking for after-dinner excitement, focus on a resort that offers theme nights, live music and stage shows. Your nightlife options can range from a quiet lobby bar to sports bars, karaoke lounges and full-scale nightclubs. Then again, some resorts keep the late-night revelry down, allowing you to relax and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere more.

ONSITE E XTRAS

Some couples choose their resort based solely on whether or not it includes a spa and/or golf course. Spa treatments are almost always an additional cost, but the size and style of spa facilities vary significantly. If the idea of a relaxing day of pampering at the spa is on your agenda, it is good to know the options in advance so you can plan accordingly. As for golf, many of the deluxe and luxury all-inclusive resorts include golf green fees as part of the package. Some resorts even have their own onsite courses designed by celebrity architects.

A CTIVITIES

Most resorts include dedicated staff who help facilitate and plan a variety of onsite activities. Some resorts focus on active options (pool games, sand volleyball, yoga), while others center on educational or cultural activities (cooking classes, dance lessons, mixology). But almost all beachfront resorts offer watersports programs, ranging from non-motorized options like kayaking, s ailing, p addleboardi ng a nd s norkeling t o excursions like scuba diving and waterskiing.

DINI NG

If you are a foodie, this should be your focus. Choices here range from basic buffet to gourmet. Forget about the total number of restaurants offered and focus on the variety and style of food. How many restaurants are buffet versus a la carte (menu), and what style of food is offered? Are reservations required? Is there a dress code? Is room service included? Do you have any special dietary restrictions? The more you know, the more you’ll enjoy night after night of decadent dining.
