PRELUDE

A S I W R I T E T H I S L E T T ER in mid-May 2021, I am reveling in the news that Maine’s restrictions have been lifted on summer events, both indoors and out. We are on our way back to normal! I want to give special thanks to the Maine Department of Economic & Community Development for working with Maine’s wedding and special event professionals through the NACE Maine chapter on safely reopening weddings to Mainers and our out-of-state guests. The support of Commissioner Heather Johnson and the DECD team has been appreciated, and we are grateful that they heard our stories and brought Maine’s wedding professionals into the reopening conversation. July 2021 looks a lot different for Maine weddings than July 2020. You can feel the excitement and energy in the air as wedding couples, friends and families, and Maine wedding professionals get ready for a summer of beautiful Maine weddings. We look forward to once again taking advantage of all that Maine has to offer its wedding weekend visitors, from the nightlife in its cities, glittering tents overlooking the ocean, bonfires on the shores of our lakes, and waking up to beautiful vistas in the mountains. Maine is a special place, and the Real Maine Weddings team looks forward to watching the summer event season unfold. To me, the July 2021 issue represents optimism. It is a record of the hope that we all had last summer and fall as we navigated through micro weddings and the safety restrictions necessary due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As you look through the images in these pages, think about the care that went into producing these events safely for everyone involved. Everyone adjusted existing plans to make things work – wedding couples and their families, their guests, and the professionals involved all went back to the drawing board and figured out how to proceed safely. Everyone came together and created beautiful memories and added to their stories in spite of the challenges that we all faced. We all came together and made it work. This willingness to collaborate is what I love most about Maine and the Maine wedding industry. It feels great to be back! Enjoy the summer and fall here in Maine, “The Way Life Should Be.” Best,

50 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW TO GET

transportation information

SCOPE OUT TRANSPORTATION options early. When you plan your Maine wedding, remember there aren’t multiple airports, bus stations, or public transportation venues for your guests to choose from.

2

LEAVE TIME for people “from away” to get lost.

10 | WWW.REALMAINEWEDDINGS.COM

If people are driving, provide SUGGESTED REST STOPS. I-95 can go on for miles without one, so be prepared.

5

If you are planning a wedding in Maine from thousands of miles away, it helps to have a local person steer you in the right direction. If you don’t have friends or family in the area, consider hiring a MAINE WEDDING PLANNER. If you’re flying in from out of state, KEEP YOUR WEDDING ATTIRE ON HAND. Pack it in your carry-on bag and have it pressed when you arrive.

BE AWARE OF TRAFFIC. Coastal Maine is a popular place in the summer, and Route 1 can come to a standstill, making travel time between the church and the reception longer than planned.

PUT SIGNS UP along the road in rural areas so your guests won’t get lost.

CONSIDER PROVIDING TRANSPORTATION. If people are coming in from out of town for your wedding, consider hiring a party bus, van, or even a trolley to take guests from their hotels to the wedding ceremony, to the reception (if it’s in a different location), and back to their hotels. It will save on parking spaces and offer your guests a safe alternative to driving.

Planning an island wedding? Remember these two words: FERRY SCHEDULE. You don’t want your guests to miss the boat.

O

Rural areas can lack a large number of available accommodations. Be prepared to BOOK ROOMS AND GUEST HOUSES well in advance.

If you’re getting married in the fall, book hotel rooms early. Autumn is “LEAF PEEPER” SEASON in New England, and accommodations book up fast with out-of-state tourists.

FOR THO S

Want to send your guests home with a bit of piece of Maine? How about a sapling? The Maine state tree is the EASTERN WHITE PINE. Have your guests plant the tree and help the environment.

There are many beautiful, natural places in Maine to get married without access to a restroom. Plan accordingly to have RESTROOM TRAILERS available for your guests.

rentals & reservations

If you are renting tenting, tables, chairs, etc., doublecheck the details of your RENTAL DELIVERY, especially if you are having a rural wedding. It may be easier for your rental company to deliver your order earlier in the week, giving you more time to set things up.

FAV O R S

Give your guests MAINE-MADE FAVORS. It’s an easy way to be unique and send your guests home with a reminder of the time they spent with you.

One great way to have an authentic and greener wedding is to PURCHASE SUPPLIES LOCALLY. Incorporate Maine food, drink, and favors.

SERVE LOCAL FAVORITES like Maine microbrews, blueberries, whoopie pies, and fiddleheads. Many people can’t get these things where they live.

Lobster is a Maine tradition, but it’s messy! If you plan to serve lobster, consider serving it “LAZY LOBSTER” style — pre-cracked and ready to eat. It will keep your tables and guests tidy.

20

Maine summers are short! Be sure to BOOK YOUR VENDORS WELL IN ADVANCE. 12-18 months in advance is not too early.

E

planning from afar 21 FR

O M AWA Y

If you plan a Maine wedding from afar, try to MAKE AT LEAST ONE TRIP to your destination site and meet with all of the companies you have booked.

VISIT THE CEREMONY SITE during the same time of day and year that you have scheduled your ceremony and make notes of external or environmental noise. There’s nothing like a foghorn to ruin the moment.

Figure out what flowers are in season in Maine for your wedding. Using SEASONAL FLOWERS in your bouquet and decor will save you money and will still look beautiful.

23

If you are planning a destination wedding in Maine, a great place to start is to CONTACT A LOCAL WEDDING PLANNER in the area you’d like to be wed. They’ll know all of the helpful details to get you going! Maine is just as beautiful in the winter as it is in the summer. CONSIDER A WINTER WEDDING in the woods or on the ski slopes of one of Maine’s premiere ski resorts.

If you are planning a romantic ceremony outside on the coast, be aware that it can get quite WINDY. Make sure your hairstyle pulls your hair away from your face to keep from holding it back with your hand throughout the vows.

—Jackie Gardner, Moonset Farm Floral (Porter, ME)

Two words. MUD SEASON. If you’re getting married outside in the spring, beware. If you’re worried about bugs, put a bottle of INSECT REPELLENT on each table at the reception and make use of citronella candles when decorating.

If your ceremony is in a church without a cooling system or outside in a hot area, have PAPER FANS for your guests to cool themselves.

14 | WWW.REALMAINEWEDDINGS.COM

42 BLACK FLY season runs from mid-May to early July; MOSQUITOS can be an issue, too. Try not to schedule your ceremony during the buggiest times of day — like dusk — if you are having an outdoor wedding.

Summer evenings can be chilly in Maine. Plan on renting PATIO HEATERS if people are going to be outside in the dark, especially on the coast, where it can be windy.

BRING AN UMBRELLA. If it’s not going to rain, you can use it as shade.

On the coast it can get especially chilly at night in summer. Remind guests to PACK A SWEATER.

Black Diamonds set in a Black Gem Ceramic Men’s Wedding Band: Both the black diamonds and the black zirconia ceramic band are extremely durable, making this an excellent choice for an everyday men’s ring. Another appealing factor is that the cost is less than half of what it would be in white gold and white diamonds.

8mm Black Gem Ceramic Bands with a Matte Cobalt-Chrome Overlay: Both the cobalt-chrome and the zirconia ceramic are harder than steel. This is another great choice for the rugged outdoor man. This is an option that costs significantly less than gold and platinum.

because that gave the patrons a chance to leave and walk across the street to their competition. I taught myself how to DJ to fill in the set breaks and play some club tunes that we couldn’t pull off live as a band. When the band ended up parting ways, I still wanted to keep performing and had full intentions of starting my own DJ business. My father was the one who suggested I talk to Mitch Dugan, the owner at The Music Man DJ Service, and the rest is history! WHAT IS THE ONE THING YOU WISH CLIENTS LOOKING FOR A DJ KNEW AHEAD OF TIME? One of the biggest things I wish clients knew before considering a DJ is understanding how important a role they play during the wedding day. I think it comes from the old stereotype of what a DJ was. A DJ was someone who showed up, played music, and hopefully made sure everyone had a good time. Today, a good DJ wears several hats. Not only do they play music, but they also provide audio engineering during your ceremony to make sure your vows can be heard by everyone attending. They work in tandem with your other vendors and make appropriate announcements to ensure your guests know what’s coming up next, and

Inspiration can come in many forms, and I like to see where I will be creating for a wedding, special event, or even a fashion shoot. The Kings’ Hill Inn fashion shoot (see page 72) happened to be a private estate in the middle of the woods. I found it to be an ethereal and magical space. If you look carefully, you may even spot a wood nymph roaming in the forest. Although the sights and sounds of Mother Nature, the twisted and tangled structures of tree branches, the

When working with brides, the most important thing for me to remember is that it is a collaboration. I’m here to help them achieve their vision. It is their wedding, and it is my job to give them a memorable creative experience on the most important day of their life. This day will live on in pictures, anniversaries, and memories. A tremendous amount of time, energy, and money has been invested into various aspects of this special day. My job is to help give them options and explore the possibilities of where we could take things — something that compliments their face and may even accentuate the dress. The process feels deeply personal to me and I take so much pride in my work that I think of my clients as my brides, and I want them to love how they look all day! Not only so they can wear the style that flatters them most, but so that it will also be realistic as well as beautiful. 32 | WWW.REALMAINEWEDDINGS.COM

I feel that everything today is so glamorous, which I love, but there’s something beautiful about the simplicity of a bohemian look! The centerpiece of the 1812 Farm is the restored antique New England barn. GUY STYLE BRINGING YOUR PERSONAL STYLE INTO YOUR WEDDING ATTIRE

C

ustomizing your wedding wardrobe can be a subtle way of bringing your own

personal style into a traditional tuxedo type of affair. Here are a few ways to add some highlight notes to your wedding attire.

SHOES Shoes make the man! Get creative with your footwear. Whether you choose matching high tops, bespoke dress shoes or velvet smoking slippers, your shoes can be a signature highlight of your wedding wardrobe.

JEWELRY Jewelry isn’t just for the bride anymore! Get creative and think about cufflinks, tie bars, bracelets, necklaces, and even earrings. Jewelry is a great way to personalize your wedding attire with a bit of bling. Get creative and give jewelry to your groomsmen that they will wear at the wedding and use afterwards.

COLORS A subtle nod to your wedding colors in your boutonniere, tie or pocket square, or even your suit itself can add a bit of flair to you and your groomsmen. 84 | WWW.REALMAINEWEDDINGS.COM

friends and family to be able to experience some of the things we love about Maine as well,” said Emily of her wedding weekend. Maine has had a special place in Emily’s heart since childhood, but throughout their relationship, Maine became a special place with Ilya as well. Early in their relationship, Emily brought Ilya on a trip to Maine to give him a tour of all of her favorite places and have him experience the place she loved so dearly. “I showed him all of the local spots, like the Old Orchard Beach bars and arcades, the bingo halls, and where we could get the best lobster snacks,” said Emily. “Once we started to plan, we knew that we wanted to get married in Maine.” When it came to planning the wedding, Emily counted on Ilya and her parents to help bring the wedding to fruition. The couple wanted to ensure that their guests had an experience that they would remember for a lifetime, so they took great care to add touches that would create a unique event. To welcome their guests into town, Emily and Ilya arranged for their guests to enjoy a harbor cruise so that everyone could enjoy the views their chosen locale afforded. I N E M I LY ' S W O R D S I’m so glad that... I married the most wonderful husband and was able to share such a special weekend with some of our closest friends and family. One of my favorite moments was... Do I have to choose? Honestly, every minute felt like my favorite moment for different reasons. Of course, having my brother say we were married and kissing Ilya as my husband for the first time was so special. Everything from getting ready with my mom and best friend; getting stuck in thorn bushes with my maid of honor as we walked to the first look; walking down the aisle with my dad; laughing hysterically with our alpaca guests; our first dance; and dancing the night away under the stars — I just didn’t want it to end. I wish... we had been able to have all of our friends and relatives with us but I know we were lucky to celebrate regardless. I also just wish we could do it all over again! I really liked... EVERYTHING! It was nice how intimate it ended up being, and I loved seeing my parents have so much fun and dancing the night away with us! My advice to other couples is... try to enjoy every moment and all of the little things, including going off and having a moment alone together. Do the best you can to not think about any of your original plans as soon as you get to your wedding weekend so you can just enjoy it all no matter what happens.

IN JERITH’S WORDS I’m so glad that... I was able to relax and have a stress-free day where I could focus on the man I love and the people who support us. One of my favorite moments was... listening to Jason’s vows. They were incredibly thoughtful and touching, especially the part where he told me that he would “defend me from illiterate hacks.” I didn’t realize... how lovely it would feel to be married. We had lived together for a while before tying the knot, and I didn’t think things would change. But now, there is lightness, a sense of belonging that I didn’t feel before. I wish... that I’d eaten more cake. Seriously. It was so delicious. I really liked... how much nature we were able to incorporate into our ceremony. It felt very centering, and like God and love were present in the details. My advice to other couples is... to make decisions for themselves, without worrying about anyone else. It is a day to focus on your love together and the unique components of your relationship.

I was thankful to be able to savor the moment and listen with an open and carefree heart to our officiant’s words and Jason’s vows to care for me”. I asked my grandmother to walk me down the aisle. She had a big smile on her face, and I’ll never forget it.” Then walked down the aisle to their favorite song, “Cover Me Up” by Jason Isbell, performed by their friends Addison and Clara.

Afterward, the small group gathered on picnic blankets to relax and enjoy the food prepared by Jerith and Jason. “I’m well known in our group of friends for my charcuterie boards, so I catered the wedding myself, and made an elaborate spread, and included all of my man’s favorites. I served it on a cutting board that I made Jason for Christmas a few years prior.” As a special treat for Jerith, Jason made the wedding cake himself. “Jason made our wedding cake, a pavlova, from scratch the evening before. It is my favorite dessert, and I’ve never successfully been able to make one, so he learned how to do it for me as a sign that we will always help each other.” Not to be outdone, Jerith surprised Jason with six bottles of wine from his favorite winery in the Finger Lakes region of New York. Despite the challenges posed by 2020, Jerith and Jason’s wedding was exactly how they envisioned it, and they wouldn’t have had it any other way. REAL MAINE WEDDINGS JULY 2021 | 99

While on vacation together in Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada, Ben had planned to set the stage for popping the question. Under the guise of “not wanting to fumble with a self-timer or take a selfie,” Ben had previously arranged for a photographer to capture the big moment in front of some of the most beautiful sites the park has to offer; Peyto Lake, the Canadian Rockies, and Victoria Glacier. Right at sunset, Ben proposed, and the photos of the big moment are some of the couple’s favorites. When thinking about where they’d like to get married, Ben and Ryan wanted to stay true to their love of being outside and hiking. For the ceremony, they chose to exchange

I N B E N & R YA N ’ S W O R D S I’m so glad that... no one contracted Covid-19 as a result of our wedding. One of my favorite moments was... our entrance into the reception hall and feeling relief from having completed the ceremony and getting to enjoy everyone’s company. I didn’t realize... how quickly time would pass once we began getting ready. I wish... I had remembered all my clothing (Ryan). I really liked... how everyone really was there for us and did what they could to make us feel special for the day. My advice to other couples is... relax. Do not take the day too seriously. Remember, the wedding will not start without you. It’s supposed to be fun. If you aren’t having fun, chances are your guests aren’t either. Something will go wrong, roll with it and laugh about it later. REAL MAINE WEDDINGS JULY 2021 | 105

As they drove to the beach, Isaiah asked Mariah if she was ready for marriage yet. Mariah remembers that “we talked about the future often so that this was also not an unusual or random question.” Mariah wanted to wait a minimum of 5 years, and it had only been 21/2 and she told Isaiah she was not ready. “We went on with the date, and Isaiah asked anyway! He was so nervous that he was shaking and almost dropped the ring in the jetty. I said yes! It was a very long engagement. Compromise!” When the time was right, Mariah and Isaiah decided to elope. They chose to come to Maine, to the Town Hall in Wells. Isaiah remembers, “We decided it was now or never, so we chose to elope! IN MARIAH & ISAIAH’S WORDS: I’m so glad that... it was a perfect day! We finally got married as best friends. One of my favorite moments was... it’s tough to choose. Mariah says lobster rolls. northern Maine to see where would allow it. Once we created that list, we researched the actual locations to see which would fit the aesthetic. We narrowed that list even further and took a day trip to see these places in person. Wells, Maine, is a beautiful town. The Town Hall has beautiful pillars and gardens outside. Beside the building are these enchanting architectural boulders and trees. Wells also offered an eclectic array of scenery that was perfect for photos! Plus, Ogunquit was next door for a mini-moon!” Mariah and Isaiah’s wedding day arrived with little fanfare, but their excitement was running high! They decided to keep some of the traditional wedding day formalities. “The night before, we got a 2-bedroom cottage so we could sleep separately and get ready separately,” Mariah explains. “We still wanted to have a genuine first look! We held the ceremony outside Town Hall under the pillars and took photos in the garden and the enchanted forest. Afterwards, we found an adorable restaurant, Fisherman’s Catch, and “toasted” our marriage with classic Maine lobster rolls in a wedding dress and wedding garb!” In an act symbolic of the adjustments made while planning a pandemic wedding, Mariah and Isaiah cut their cake on the hood of their car on the side of the road. It was the perfect end to the perfect day. REAL MAINE WEDDINGS JULY 2021 | 109

fter months of uncertainty, we are finally back on track with the Real Maine Weddings

Midcoast Maine 2020/2021 Wedding of the Year! It has been a long road since our first-ever virtual winner’s announcement in March of 2020. We did manage a few meetings in 2021 with The Henry’s Bridal Boutique, Sebasco Harbor Resort, Maine Maritime Museum, and the Swedenborgian Church of Bath. We have recently been getting back on track with our rescheduled planning days with Steward and Porter Travel by Dream Vacations, Agora Grand Event Center, Affordable PHOTOS: (TOP) MOLLY BRETON & CO.; (RIGHT) KIVALO PHOTOGRAPHY

Events, Day’s Jewelers, and ConfectionArt. It has been wonderful to reconnect in person with our colleagues and with Rachel and Adam here in post-pandemic Maine. We are all looking forward to the wedding in October of 2021! Special thanks to our partners and Rachel and Adam for sticking it out! We have enjoyed this extended trip with all of you. Stay tuned for the January 2022 issue of Real Maine Weddings for the full story with photos from Kivalo Photography and Molly Breton & Co. Photography! REAL MAINE WEDDINGS JULY 2021 | 143
