Your favorite coach may have reminded you that you weren’t going to “stick” the dismount from the parallel bars unless you could see it happening in your mind. A beloved teacher may have cautioned that you wouldn’t successfully design your class experiment unless your intentions were aligned with your final goals. They knew that our intentions—what we think about goals and whether we have a positive vision of success—really can be the difference between success and failure. So when you find yourself drifting, stuck, or on autopilot in your career, your relationships, your health, or your finances, it’s important to get realigned. First, remember that it is human nature to get lost or disconnected from our BEST intentions and visions for ourselves. We’re not alone! This drifting can sometimes be linked to losing connection with the goals and values that have inspired our sense of who we are—a good manager, a loving partner, or a healthy, balanced person. Stress, losses, health worries, and other events can shake us away from what previously helped us stay focused on the things that mattered.

Here are some ideas that might help you harness your best intentions and put you back on track with the purposes that matter to you. • Renewed conversations with the people who inspired you in the past can help. Find that mentor, coach, friend, boss, or teacher who helped you as you discovered the work/life you love. Share some of the stories about the past; laugh or cry about those wild ideals that charged you up and gave you hope. • Share your feelings about what it’s been like to lose your way; ask others what they have done when they’ve drifted; and don’t be afraid to reexamine your goals. What mattered to you in your 20s may be different than what matters in your 40s or 50s. • Try journaling your thoughts around some simple prompts: “I used to be inspired to …” “Doing _____________ gave me great satisfaction and a sense of well-being.” “I noticed that I started to be less inspired after _____________.” “My biggest challenge in getting realigned will be ______________.” • It can be especially important to ask yourself, “Am I making a difference?” Are the students in my classroom excited about learning? Are the people in my department bringing their BEST to work each day? Is my partner/family feeling supported and encouraged? Are my efforts at wellness helping me feel more like the person I want to be? Researchers have found that we tend to feel better both physically and emotionally when we are aligned with our values and goals AND when we’re making a difference in the work we do, in our relationships, and in our personal wellness. A study cited by Victor Strecher, author of “Life on Purpose,” showed that “for every one-point increase on a six-point scale measuring purpose in life, adults with heart disease have a 27 percent decreased risk of having a heart attack over a two-year period.” Purpose can literally save our lives! As we reconnect with a sense of purpose and get our intentions realigned, we’ll have more energy and make healthier lifestyle choices. In turn, those good choices can feed our sense of purpose. Trust in the fact that you matter, that you have purpose, and that you are living your BEST life. And when you find yourself drifting or lost, trust that you can harness the power of your BEST intentions. It can change everything!
