WNC dogs head to the northeast for adoption Buddy and 24 canine pals are going to have a great holiday this year. They will be with new families in a new location - Massachusetts.

Appalachian Animal Rescue Coalition recently began regular transports to rescue organizations in the Northeast, where spay/neuter laws have been so successful that there are more people eager to adopts pets than animals available for adoption.

Appalachian Animal Rescue Coalition (AARC) is a new life-saving transport alliance organized by Animal Compassion Network (ACN), a rescue organization that serves all of Western North Carolina, P.A.W.S. Animal Shelter in Bryson City, Jackson County Humane Society (ARF) and Charlie’s Angels Animal Rescue in Transylvania.

The four WNC rescue organizations are working to help more dogs, including those from outlying counties where help is not as readily available. In a pilot run on November 2, all but two of 23 dogs from WNC were adopted within four days of arrival, and the final pair was adopted soon thereafter.

“But despite our placement of animals into foster homes where they stay until they are adopted, our spay/neuter assistance program, pet food assistance program and lowcost shot clinics, we still have more animals than adopters. We are so happy that people

living in areas with more success at controlling their animal population want these deserving pets. Right now we are sending only dogs, but we hope to locate a receiving agency willing to accept some of our shelter cats soon,” said Eileen Bouressa, executive director of ACN. The dogs who are transported will come from Buncombe, Haywood, Swain, Jackson, Transylvania, Madison and Rutherford counties.

Each will have been tested to ensure they are behaviorally and medically sound. The destination organizations receiving pets from AARC have been thoroughly vetted by the AARC partners and have the same high standards as Animal Compassion Network and other AARC partners.

Buddy’s story is typical of the animals who will be getting a new lease on life as a result of the AARC program. He was in the Jackson County Animal Shelter, just hours from being euthanized, when Jackson County’s ARF was able to remove him from the shelter and arrange for him to be on the December 15 AARC transport. He has spent a couple of weeks in a temporary foster home and now is ready to roll.

How WNC Residents and Businesses Can Help AARC has an experienced team of drivers willing and able to safely take each van-load

of pets to a brighter future, but volunteers are needed to fill several roles and donations are needed to cover transport expenses.

Fosters - The program needs individuals and families throughout Western North Carolina, including in outlying areas, who are willing to foster north-bound animals for just two weeks before their foster animal hits the road.

All expenses for the animal are paid, and this offers a great opportunity for people who have wanted to help animals, but have either been concerned about their ability to fulfill a potentially long-term responsibility or were worried they would be tempted to adopt the animal. The animals just need to “crash” for a few days.

Other Volunteers - Also needed are once-amonth volunteers who will help load animals into crates and lift crates into place.

Donations – Donations to defray transport costs are also sought. Checks may be sent to Animal Compassion Network (write Transport Program on the memo line) at 803 Fairview St., Asheville, NC 28803.

Efficient heating options for fall and winter (StatePoint) When temperatures drop, you may be tempted to blast the thermostat.
