Feng Shui brings peace to the bedroom By jini rayne Both bed and bedroom are exceedingly important in feng shui. Beds relate to health, rest and relationships. There is also an important relationship between the bed and oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wealth. The relative position of the bed within your bedroom and home, and the quality of your sleep, affect your ability to be successful and acquire wealth.
that any items deemed incompatible are screened from the bed. Also keep all electronic devices as far away from the bed as possible, as electromagnetic fields may disturb sleep in more sensitive people. We use a Gaussmeter to measure electromagnetic fields. When measurements are high in relation to oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pillow, sleep is adversely affected. Often clients simply move electronic devices to another area of their bedroom and find that a more restful sleep pattern returns.
Bedrooms are a place of peace and rest, a quiet retreat from the world. Ideally they should be used only for sleeping and intimacy. Having a desk for bill paying or a home entertainment center in the bedroom is incompatible with the true purpose of oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s bedroom.. something of the parents into their room. Put a high school trophy, childhood collection, picture of yourself or some other symbol of your presence into the highest up and farthest back room in the house. Visualize that you are responsible for and in control of the household. All beds should be backed by a solid wall and have a good view of the door from the bed. Everyone rests a little easier if they can see what is coming. Generally, you don’t want to be able to see yourself from the bed. The same goes for television screens that are like a mirror or an eye watching you as you sleep. Move or cover them with a cloth or scarf in your bedroom or at motels when traveling. You also don’t want the bed to be directly across from the door as the door is the mouth of the chi, and this energy will be bombarding you while you sleep. Do close the door while in bed and also hang a multifaceted crystal between door and bed to redirect and circulate the chi. Generally, you don’t want anything hanging over you while you sleep, so a beam, hanging lamp, plant or ceiling fan are considered “bad” feng shui. Elsewhere in the room is fine. If you are unable to move the bed from under a beam, at least paint it to blend in with the rest of the ceiling or gently drape some fabric over it. Skylights are distracting and let energy escape above you, and while they can be pleasant, feng shui principles say no. There should be nothing placed under the bed so that chi can circulate freely. If it is necessary to use some of this space for storage, the best use of under bed boxes is to store blankets and bed linens. It can be any kind of door including a louvered, folding, or partial door. Or hang a curtain or partial curtain in the doorway. Even harking back to the 60’s with a beaded curtain works. Just define that doorway. Bedrooms should be intimate but not confining. If it is too small, use your decorating skills to enlarge it with light or strategic mirrors. If is exceedingly large, comfortable furniture and darker colors might make it more cozy. All of these rules are most important for bedrooms that are used on a continual basis. (A guest room where people only stay for a short time is of less importance.) The bedroom is the room of the house in which occupants spend the most time. It contains your last view of the evening and the first view that greets you when you awaken each morning. So it is ideal to have a view of nature out your window, or a beautiful painting or something else that you find pleasant. This a good way to start and end your day.

Feng Shui design by Jini Rayne and ecological studies. Fine Homes of Western North Carolina had the opportunity to sit down with Jini and talk about her understanding of how feng shui supports positive change and transformation in our lives. FHWNC: How did you first become interested in Feng Shui? JR: I first became interested when a friend gave me a book by Sarah Rossbach. First published in 1983, it was actually the first feng shui book in modern times. Being a practical person, I decided to try out a few things in the book to see if it worked. At the time, my youngest child was in her freshmansophomore summer. I had been divorced from her father for some time and had decided I wanted a partner in my life again. So I did a feng shui cure for marriage, and within six months my partner Calen and I were married. I did a cure in career because I was at a stand still at work, and within six months we had a breakthrough at work and moved to newer and better facilities. Jini Rayne
By Laura Esculcas One of Western North Carolina’s leading experts in Feng Shui, Jini Rayne has thirty years experience working with this ancient Chinese science of sacred landscape. Jini is a business and teaching professional, teacher of Feng Shui and Space Clearing Blessing, an Independent Reiki Master in the Usui, Japanese, Tibetan and Soul-Wind traditions, and a breathwork consultant. She was a student and disciple of the late His Holiness, Grand Master Thomas Lin Yun, Rinpoche, a Chinese-born Feng Shui master. For many years, Jini studied extensively with the late Professor Lin, who expanded traditional Black Sect doctrine and philosophy to include knowledge and influences from Western medicine, psychology, social science, architecture, ecology, and natural science. Jini consults with clients around the world, helping them to manifest positive change in their lives through her unique blend of practical knowledge and experience with feng shui, Native American space clearing, energy healing modalities, 48 Fine Homes & Design | Summer 2016
Later, when I moved out of that house I didn’t remove the marriage cure. One of my daughters, who was in her early twenties, moved into it and within six months she was married. So I realized this stuff must be powerful, and I began studying it in earnest. FHWNC: What are the origins of Feng Shui? JR: Originally in China feng shui was used to site the graves of ancestors, because it was believed that one’s fortune comes from one’s ancestors watching over them. This practice for the dead was called Yin Feng Shui. Yang Feng Shui is for the living and is what is practiced today. Ernest Eitel’s 1878 book Feng-shui: The rudiments of natural science in China reflects the original form of feng shui. Feng shui is fundamentally about the landscape and what is around you. In ancient China, it was noted that people living in homes that faced south and backed up to a hillside or mountain would have an easier life. From this developed the concept of the landscape around the home forming a basic protection chair that shields the back of the house from the north winds. In feng shui, the most auspicious position comes from what is around you. The compass school of feng shui came in later when people focused on building homes
by looking at absolute direction, rather than at home position relative to the existing landscape.

So really feng shui came from very practical observations and needs. It is an example of native people putting themselves in harmony with the land and the environment.
FHWNC: In your work, you emphasize space-clearing ceremonies and teach a Space Clearing Blessing. Tell me your experience with space clearing and how it benefits clients.
FHWNC: I understand you trained with Grand Master Thomas Lin Yun, Rinpoche. What was it like to study with such an esteemed Feng Shui Master?
JR: In feng shui, there are ceremonies designed to clear out energy before the decorating work can be done. For the “pretty stuff” and placement of objects that we normally associate with feng shui to be effective, the space must be cleared of residual energy. Clearing is the foundation for everything; otherwise the feng shui cures are not going to work very well.
JR: Professor Lin was friendly, kind, and humble. He liked to joke a lot, so it was fun to study with him. He taught in Chinese, which was then translated for us. He was affable and unpretentious, wearing Hawaiian shirts rather than robes. He would tell the story that when he was a child in China, he was playing with his group of friends one time near the monastery and when the monks approached them to see who might be interested in becoming a monk, he couldn’t run away because he was so chubby! Sarah Rossbach studied with him and he authorized her to write the first book that I had read. Professor Lin taught all over the world. In conversations with his senior students, Professor Lin presented oral transmissions, some of which are not yet published in books. FHWNC: What is Black Hat Sect Feng Shui? JR: It is short for Black Hat Sect Tantric Buddhist School of Feng Shui. Tantric Buddhism comes from Tibet, and began to influence elements of traditional Chinese feng shui. Professor Lin expanded the doctrine and philosophy of Black Sect to include the essence of Confucianism, Taoism, Yin-Yang philosophy, Eclecticism, Exoteric and Esoteric Buddhism, I-Ching, Theory of Chi, holistic healing, feng shui, and indigenous studies. The Tibetans recognized Professor
I also studied with Denise Linn, who has studied many cultures around the world. Her approach to feng shui is to combine the feng shui practices from Professor Lin with approaches from other cultures. As a Native American woman, Denise put equal emphasis on the clearing of energy when she taught. She combined feng shui from Professor Lin with her multicultural approach to clear energies and raise the positive energy of the space. With my clients we do an energetic spring cleaning to make everything sparkling and clear. We deal today with the ancestral energy of the property, as well as identifying more mundane problems. We had a client - a lawyer - who bought a19th century property. In our energy clearing, we found a very unhealthy residual energy in the master bedroom. Under further investigation, we discovered that the toilet in the master bathroom had never been connected to the drain, so sewage had flowed under bedroom for years. Feng shui goes much deeper than the decorating and cures. The foundation of energetic cleaning must be there for an effective solution. In order to start at the foundation, we ask our clients to complete an extensive questionnaire to get to Summer 2016 | Fine Homes & Design 49
the underlying issues they are having, which give us hints at where to look and what to look for when we start our work. FHWNC: What is your process when working with a new client? JR: We begin with a questionnaire filled out by every person living in the house who is old enough to write his or her own answers. The questionnaire is filled out without speaking with each other. It’s also helpful to have a plot plan and house plan, because my partner Calen needs to figure out energetically what’s going on. I like to work cooperatively with people. We talk about what’s working and what is not, and I reiterate how this relates to what they had put on their questionnaire. I do this while we walk around the house and talk about it. I like to point out what is working and what is good feng shui. I have a teaching background, so I like to work together with clients to find solution that work with their lifestyle and taste, often using things they already have in their home that might need to be moved to some other place. Part of my role is helping clarify what is working and what’s not, and then taking action I will give examples of several approaches, traditional and non-traditional ways to deal with the situation, and usually someone will say, “Oh, I have something like that.” And something like that really resonates with people and is
comfortable for them, so it’s likely to happen. It’s not just some weird thing that they might not actually do. Feng shui is not just a philosophy – for it to work, we have to actually take action. Traditionally you’re supposed to put cures in as quickly as you can, it’s not something you are supposed to delay on. Once you know what do, my advice is to get busy and do it. FHWNC: Why is it helpful to hire a Feng Shui consultant? JR: Besides their knowledge and experience, a feng shui consultant helps you to take action to bring about the change you want in your life – a lot like a coach. A lot of what we’re doing is helping people clarify what works and what doesn’t work in their life and then do something about it. It’s like going to the doctor. If you think something is wrong with you, you pay the doctor a visit and then you act on the doctor’s advice. For example, you don’t go home with a prescription for antibiotics and then set it aside for a couple of weeks before you start taking the antibiotics. If you have something going on in your life and someone hands you a cure, it’s best to act immediately. The advantage of hiring a feng shui consultant instead of just trying to do it on your own is that you invite another set of eyes to look at the situation. Even the best feng shui experts invite other colleagues to their homes to get a fresh perspective on things. (More on page 52)

Jini Rayne... from page 50 FHWNC: What is one of the more extensive cures you’ve been involved with? JR: I consulted with a lawyer who had a large office suite on two floors. His office was on the second floor and had a large window overlooking a busy street that headed directly toward his window before it jogged around the building. There was a small side street that crossed this main street directly in front of the building. He called me because, although he was quite successful, it seemed that he kept getting pounded with problem after problem. Feng shui says that a building in direct line with oncoming traffic is always getting bombarded with unwanted energy. The ideal solution would have been to have a large, round fountain in front of his building to mitigate and circulate the energy, but there was no room because of the smaller cross street. I gave him some alternate ideas after mentioning the ideal, and I did not hear from him for months. The next time I visited his city, I drove by his office location and the cross street had been closed off and replaced with a beautiful plaza featuring a large fountain in just the right place. I am still not sure exactly how he pulled that off, but it did solve the issue.
FHWNC: As you have stated, Feng Shui is about putting oneself in harmony with the surrounding landscape. Please share some of your observations about the landscape of Western North Carolina as it related to Feng Shui.
Feng shui is not just a philosophy – for it to work, we have to actually take action.
FHWNC: Could you share a unique situation you encountered while consulting in a foreign country? JR: In Guatemala it is common to have walls and guards around the homes of wealthy people; the more layers of security, the more expensive the house. At one house under construction, there were four checkpoints with increasingly powerful armaments at each one, leading up to the fifth wall where the guards had machine guns. As I toured the house, I realized that the helicopter garage and pad (ready for a quick escape if necessary) were in the part of the energy map (bagua) commonly known as marriage. So the clients not only had a relationship with danger, but also symbolically had a quick escape from their marriage. It was an interesting situation to try to remedy! I use a gauss meter to check for strong electromagnetic fields in homes. Usually they are found around stoves and microwaves and other electronic equipment when in use. 52 Fine Homes & Design | Summer 2016
Sometimes people have a clock or clock radio near their bedside that puts a strong field on their pillow that disturbs their sleep. At one estate in Guatemala there was a low level field everywhere we went. That puzzled us until we figured out that it was higher on one side of the property than on the opposite side. It turned out that the higher readings were on the side closer to the volcanoes. I had not realized that volcanoes have an electromagnetic field with such an extensive reach.
JR: It is ideal for the house to have protection or support behind it, some smaller support to the sides, and a wide vista to the front. Here in the mountains that is a fairly common circumstance. But many homes are built with the view to the back of the house so that the driveway goes down from the road and there is no support for the back of the house. In feng shui terms, the energy from the three back areas of the bagua: wealth, fame, and marriage is draining away down the slope so that there are likely issues in these areas.
I have recently begun working with a number of clients who own ocean front properties in New England. This is also an issue for them. The energy falls off, and there is water behind in an area that is supposed to have fire energy in the five-element system. An effective cure helps to mitigate energy loss. FHWNC: Thank you for your thoughts on the fascinating subject. Is there anything else you would like to add? JR: I always say that you want your home to rise up and meet you. Feng shui is about deepening the relationship with your home and the land. It is about putting everything in harmony so that you all support each other to get – and to give - the most out of life. Stones of Wisdom Most people think of Stonehenge in England as an example of standing stones. Recently researchers from University of London’s Institute of Archaeology brought forth the idea that blue stones used to build Stonehenge came from a Welsh tomb. In many cultures, the graves of one’s loved ones are marked by a head stone that provides information about the deceased. Professor Mike Parker Pearson of the University of London “thinks the Welsh reused the stones as a way of bringing their ancestors with them when they traveled to England.” 58 Fine Homes & Design | Summer 2016
But there are thousands of stones standing on megalithic sites in countries all over the world, some in mysteriously aligned formations, some in small groups known as cromlechs, or “gathering of stones,” and still other stones that stand alone. These stand alone stones are called menhirs, and they often serve as silent witnesses. Some refer to menhirs as “Stones of Wisdom,” for it is believed they connect Heaven and Earth and carry the ancestral memory of land surrounding them. They often act as windows into our past.

Julian Richards believes our ancestors “exploited the magic of stones.” He continues, “they used stone as building blocks for the living and dead; as a canvas for their sacred art; and as a means of marking and commemorating the land of which they were an inseparable part.” A grouping of stones or a single standing stone can have great presence, especially if given a prominent location within a landscape design. Ted Carter, a landscape designer in Maine, is currently working on a large commercial project in that area, and has positioned a large menhir where two paths cross within what will be an apple orchard. It will now become a focal point of that project and take its place as a “record keeper” for property going forward. This particular stone was picked from a quarry in New Hampshire by Asheville based geomancer Calen Rayne, who has trained with European geomancers from a number of different lineages. He wandered through the quarry for several hours and picked out numerous stones that will be used in Carter’s future landscape designs. Carter and Rayne work together on certain projects to create what can best be described as “sacred landscapes” or “ritual landscapes.” Because many of these projects are located on ocean front property in Maine, the concept is to blend plants, earth, rock and water to

create a harmonious and balanced environment that nourishes both homeowner and the natural environment surrounding a home.
Other stones become an integral part of a landscape design when grouped together to mark a pathway to a front door. Stones can also be arranged with plants to bring a balanced design feature to a property.
This process is based on design elements described by Ernest Eitel in his 19th century book, Feng shui- Sacred Landscapes of Old China. Groups of stones and menhirs can be placed for a variety of purposes. Recently a Publix store opened in South Asheville, and a menhir is located at the base of a driveway that connects to Hendersonville Road. So one possibility is to mark an entrance to a property. Another use is to create a meditation space with seating so one can sit and engage with the stone. Other stones become an integral part of a landscape design when grouped together to mark a pathway to a front door. Stones can also be arranged with plants to bring a balanced design feature to a property. When contemplating a home’s landscape design, consider stones as a viable option to enhance your project. By Colleen Watson Asheville has a history of innovation and creativity, so it’s not surprising to find a company like Deltec Homes headquartered here. The entrepreneurial spirit is thriving in this area, which helps keep Western North Carolina on the cutting edge in many ways. And that spirit can be found in the mission of Deltec Homes, and has been present throughout its history. Founded in 1968 by brothers Robert and Wayne Kinser, Deltec Homes is a family-owned business, and a member of the UNC Asheville Family Business Forum (FBF). The FBF has been providing opportunities for family businesses to share knowledge and excellence with its members for the past 15 years. Many of its members speak about the advantages of being associated with the FBF, and Deltec Homes is no exception. According to the company’s president, Steve Linton, over the years, Deltec Homes has benefited from their association with the FBF.

In 1985, the name was changed to Deltec Homes as they moved more toward the residential market. FineHomes & Design recently had an opportunity to speak with Mr. Linton about Deltec Homes, their passion and commitment to the environment and what keeps this family business in Asheville. FineHomes: What do you see as the biggest change in your home designs since your business began? SL: When Deltec began in 1968, our round-shaped homes were primarily built for coastal and mountain resorts. Over the years, as people began staying in our homes on vacations, they began asking us in ever-increasing numbers to build a Deltec home for their primary residence. Today, well over 90% of our homes are custom-designed and built for individual homeowners. The other significant change in our home design was the launch of our Renew Collection in 2013. Deltec has decades of experience in building high-performance and net-zero homes, and the Renew Collection allows us to use this expertise for homes of all shapes and sizes. were very foreign to our staff at first, the collection has been extremely successful and allows us to continue on our journey to change the face of housing in America. SL: We would really like to see the community continue to rally around the idea of improving housing availability and affordability. FineHomes: What part of Asheville’s culture do you wish you could mass-produce and export to the world? SL: We already export round houses and beer, what more could you want? But seriously, we’re not sure we’d want to mass-produce Asheville. What makes our area so wonderful may be impossible to distill into something that could be meaningful in another part of the world.
