And it is also the reason why people who own fine homes seek out Brian Boggs. Brian Boggs, Master Handcraftsman, has been building chairs and tables for 33 years. He has built more than 300 chairs without electricity! In addition, has taught, contributes articles for the top woodworking magazines, creates innovative designs and builds the finest chairs in the world. And he’s right here in Asheville, NC. But that’s not why people should seek out Brian! When I stopped by his company, Brian Boggs Chairmakers, for this interview, Brian sat down in a chair he’s still working on. chairs. As Brian explains, “My chairs are designed so you can relax into them. If you are lucky enough to visit Asheville, stopping by their studio is a must. You literally have to experience his chairs to know that something like this is even possible. It is an unfortunate secret that this internationally renowned fine handcraft woodworker lives and creates here in Asheville. Brian was born in Charlotte and moved to Asheville at the age of two. His elementary school teacher, Hope Johnson of Weaverville Primary, observed his artwork and told his mother he should sign him up for art classes. Fortunately, Brian’s
mom did just that; he was the only child in adult oil painting classes – producing beautiful paintings. At the age of 11 his family moved to Kentucky where he continued his lessons. Eventually he traveled to France and took up drawing, but he was frustrated with 2-dimensional art; he couldn’t create what he wanted to. One day he just happened upon, if there is such a thing, a book called the Fine Art of Cabinetry, which intrigued him as he’d never thought of cabinets as fine art. Magically, Brian connected to his deepest passion; the book opened his eyes to a whole new world of artistic expression. The 3-dimensional wood forms felt natural to him and shaping things was second nature. He realized his journey must have always been leading to this. He reflected that most of his paintings
had been of trees and that all his life he’d been connected to trees – either up in them, lying under them, or traipsing among them in forests. “I was suddenly fully, consciously aware of my deep love for trees and all I wanted to do was to work with them in ways that allowed their beauty, essence and lineage to live on. I could now create 3-dimensional art in the form of handcrafted, high quality furniture.” Brian’s passion and love for trees and wood is evident in his work and his commitment to the profession. When Brian couldn’t find tools to do the quality of work he aspired to, he invented them. Brian’s reputation among those who know fine furniture and quality handcraft chairs and tables is unparalleled. They use his tools and they purchase his chairs! Marc Adams of the Mark Adams School of Woodworking, Frank Pollaro, who makes custom furniture for celebrity homes and luxury yachts, Peter Korn, the Director of the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship, Miguel Gomez-Ibanez, President of the North Bennett Street School in Boston, three of the last four presidents of the Furniture Association, along with most of the other well known handcraft woodworkers in the world all own at least one Boggs chair. )DOO_)LQH+RPHVRI:1&
I asked Brian how his love and passion for wood actually translates into his unique ability to create 3-dimensional art that is lovely to look at and heaven to sit in. He lit up, “It’s really about creating the sense of sitting in a chair, not just crafting a chair.” (huh?) He continues, ‘For maximum comfort, the form of the chair needs to provide uninterrupted, uniform pressure or contact with the person, allowing weight to be evenly displaced by the curve of the wood – no matter who is sitting in it. When you pad a chair, you don’t have to be as accurate, but you miss the opportunity to display the beauty of the material itself.” Many woodworkers build furniture with wood that has just been cut from a tree, sliced into board feet with no concern for the integrity of the wood. With Brian’s knowledge and understanding of wood, he knows how to “take the tree apart” in ways that maintain the integrity and strength of the wood. To do this, he purchases whole logs, literally seeing the product(s) that want to be created from each tree. )LQH+RPHVRI:1&_)DOO
After at least two years of drying, he re-engineers the wood into chairs or tables. When he builds his chairs movement actually locks the chair together (instead of weakening it). His skill results in wood that reflects light appropriately and a seamlessness to the grain that creates the sense of one piece of wood. Melanie says “People enjoy being engaged and a part of the process. We only build to order, but it is worth the wait, especially when you are so involved. Many of our clients pick out their boards or use trees that have come down on their property, deepening the connection to their special piece(s) from the beginning. We photograph the journey through the shop so each client receives a story in pictures of how their project came to life.
