room dance class, my weekly lessons became my secret place of bliss. “Twinkles” and “Box Steps” danced in my head while washing dishes or folding clothes. The idea of twirling around the dance floor wearing a flowing, pink chiffon gown became my new obsession. Dancing helped me rediscover the woman inside who loves to laugh, move to music, and have fun. My new world gave me a personal sense of purpose and accomplishment which manifested into the rest of my life and helped me discover . . . me. Thankfully, my passion is a healthy one. Participating in physical exercise can help us live an independent and healthy life for as long as possible. While walking, cycling, and swimming can give you a good workout, the benefits of dancing are superior at slowing down the aging process due to the added challenge of learning dance routines. This wonderful mental exercise keeps our minds quick and alert. It also enhances memory skills and helps to prevent dementia. This elegant workout is the perfect combination of physical activity, social interaction, and mental stimulation. Dancing is a great calorie-burner. Depending on the style and intensity of your dance, you can burn anywhere from two- to six-hundred calories in just one hour of dancing. Dancing also builds endurance and stamina when practiced regularly.

Dance. The very word makes me happy. Imagine a world filled with color, music, and movement. There is place just like that. It’s the world of dancing. For me, dancing isn’t just a hobby or something to do on the weekend, it’s an integral part of who I am and an essential element of my happiness. I began ballet dancing as a young child, but as an adult, my life became more about raising children and taking care of our home. Osteoporosis and arthritis are two enemies of our bodies. With dance, our joints are kept lubricated and our bones are tasked to stay strong. This low-impact, weight-bearing activity is just what the doctor ordered to strengthen bones and tone muscles.
Dancing reduces stress and depression. Learning new dance steps gives us something to work toward when our lives may feel empty. The challenge of learning correct technique can be energizing and exhilarating. The social aspect of dance gives us a reason to get up, get dressed, and go out. Increased socialization contributes to higher self-esteem and a positive outlook. Moving to music is a wonderful way to release the endorphins that take our minds off of our problems. clear our heads so that we can see the big picture and make smart choices. The accomplishment of learning a new dance combination leads to increased self-confidence and feelings of self-worth. And if nothing else, just listening to music can lift our spirits. Thanks to the balance, coordination, flexibility, and good posture inspired by dancing, we are able to lead a healthier life. Coordination and balance contribute to an improved ability to react to sudden movement changes and help us avoid falls. Flexible muscles lead to increased range of motion and improved circulation. Good posture reduces the stress and strain on our spines and increases our metabolism which helps with weight maintenance.
is true: You don’t quit dancing when you get old; you get old when you quit dancing. I celebrated the birthday of a dear friend for many years by performing a solo waltz with him. Our last dance was on his 94th birthday. Whether you choose line-dancing, hip-hop, salsa, ballet, ballroom, or the country two-step, do something good for yourself and give dancing a whirl. I can’t promise you will love dancing as much as I do. My passion led me to travel around the country to enter dance competitions. It opened a new world for me in the design and making of dance costumes. You don’t need to go to these lengths to reap the benefits of dance. Dancing at any level will bring joy and health to your life, and you just may discover something new about yourself. Ee
When you dance, you learn not to take yourself too seriously. If you dance, you will forget a move, or turn the wrong way, or make any number of mistakes. Learning to brush it off and keep on moving is an important life lesson at any age. At some point in our lives, most of us have to say good-bye to our hobby of playing football, ice hockey, or soccer. However, you can continue dancing for the rest of your life. This common quote

Sewing is one of the oldest textile arts because of course, people need clothing. For thousands of years, all sewing was done by hand. Although Isaac Singer didn’t invent the sewing machine, he made improvements in its practicality, and he made it easier for American families to purchase a machine. When he patented his idea, he changed home sewing forever. Sewing machines have come a long way since the original treadle version. Along with hundreds of specialty stitches, many have features available such as self-threading and making consistently sized buttonholes—with just the touch of a button. There are machines that embroider, monogram, quilt, and have programmable memory banks. Some machines are so advanced they look like the control panel of a space ship. With so many options to purchase ready-made clothing and home decor, one might wonder, why sew at all? The answer is simple. Wearing something you made for yourself, or displaying something handmade in your home gives you a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment. It also gives you the opportunity to express your individuality with an original design. If you can’t find what you want in a shop, you can make it! 50 + Living | September 2018
The benefits of sewing don’t end with self-expression and creativity. Sewing can be therapeutic. Being creative can reduce your heart rate, lower your blood pressure and perspiration rate. Sewing often requires meditative focus. I’ve heard it said, “When I sew, I don’t smoke, I don’t eat, I don’t worry. I just sew.
As cooler temperatures return and schedules once again become routine, September is the perfect time to indulge in your creative passion—or to try a new craft. It’s estimated that one third of the country’s adult female population enjoy sewing. Taking a sewing or quilting class is a great way to learn new skills and to make new friends. In classes you have the opportunity to experiment with different fabrics, thread, tools, and techniques. Learning something new is a confidence builder with the bonus of having something tangible to take home. Many find that along with the joy of creating something new, the challenge of learning something new is part of the attraction.
What may begin as a hobby can become a way of life. When you discover the joy in creating, there is no turning back. Creative satisfaction keeps you coming back for more. You can enhance your personal style whether you enjoy making quilts for your bed, pillow covers for your sofa, placemats for your table, or original, one-of-a-kind designs to wear. The feeling you get from creating something yourself is so gratifying. Spend some time with a needle and thread. You will see for yourself just how fulfilling sewing can be. Ee

Don’t Let Cataracts Make You Miss Out on Living Life to the Fullest (BPT) - Does your life today look different than it did in your younger years - literally? If things seem more cloudy and blurry than usual, even with your glasses on, you may be one of 24 million Americans living with cataracts.[1] Cataracts might be slow to make themselves known, but the ultimate impact they have on your life can be profound.[2] As daily activities like driving become more difficult, you might be feeling like you’ve lost some of your independence and may experience fear of missing out (FOMO) on the things you love, like traveling to your favorite destinations and spending quality time with your family.[3] But that doesn’t have to be your reality. “Many patients who come into my practice are unhappy with the way cataracts are making them miss out on experiences, but they’re hesitant about undergoing cataract surgery - even though it is the only treatment for cataracts,” said Dr. Bonnie Henderson*, a Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at Tufts University School of Medicine in Massachusetts. “I talk to my patients about the benefits of cataract surgery so they are comfortable undergoing treatment and don’t waste any more precious time missing out on what life has to offer.” Page 10
Whether you’re someone living with cataracts or concerned about a loved one struggling with their eyesight, Dr. Henderson sheds light on cataracts and answers important questions about the latest cataract surgery options.
What exactly are cataracts? Cataracts cloud the eye’s naturally clear lens, blocking or changing how light passes through and resulting in blurry vision.[2] Nearly everyone who lives long enough will develop cataracts.[4] It’s one of the leading causes of vision loss in the United States and the primary cause of blindness in the world.[5],[6]
What are people with cataracts missing out on? A survey conducted by Alcon, the global leader in eye care, unveiled that people living with cataracts report experiencing poor vision when driving, having difficulty working and feeling fearful about falling.[3] Many are also worried that cataracts may keep them from being able to clearly see vibrant colors, or the faces of their loved ones.[7] These experiences could be further increasing their fears and frustrations about missing out on the things that bring them joy. 50 + Living | September 2018
ment can make sure you never again miss out on what’s important in life. Take control of your time - the earlier you start the conversation, the faster you can get back to doing the things you love. * Dr. Bonnie Henderson is an internationally recognized surgeon who is also a paid consultant for Alcon.
What are the treatment options for cataracts? Surgery is the only way that you can correct cataracts. Nearly four million Americans go through the brief procedure each year, and many are able to quickly resume their lives.[8] Today, there are even new options that allow you to correct cataracts and other eye conditions at the same time, like eye pressure associated with glaucoma, presbyopia or even astigmatism potentially reducing the need for glasses that you may have worn your entire life.

What’s keeping people from having cataract surgery? Despite the difficulties cataracts may cause, survey findings show that many who are impacted aren’t aware of the options available to help overcome the condition.[3] Some decide not to seek treatment at all because they’re afraid of eye surgery or they simply accept cataracts as a natural part of aging.[7] The good news is that with the advancements in technology available today, cataract surgery is not something to fear - or delay. In fact, more than 90 percent of people 60 years and older who underwent cataract surgery said they realized that their worries about the surgery and recovery process were unfounded and they would advise someone they know to get the surgery.[3] You can hear real people talk about their cataract stories and learn more about available treatment options at MyCataracts.com. Just as with fashion, foods come and go, and the pickled onion has made a resurgence in the United States in recent years. According to a Datassential survey on menu trends, the use of pickled onions has grown 191 percent in restaurants and diners in the U.S. in the last four years. From 2016-17, their use grew 8 percent. It seems chefs are on to something. They’ve learned the pickled onion adds an interesting twist when paired with burgers and dogs and salads and sandwiches. Car Shopping? Get Smart About Warranties and Service Contracts
(StatePoint) Car shopping? One important factor to consider is what each manufacturer’s warranty covers and how long the coverage lasts, as well as whether you’re going to purchase additional coverage through a vehicle service contract.
Powertrain
While these items can offer you peace of mind, sorting through them can be tricky. Before heading to a dealership, check out this quick look at four of the most common types of warranties and additional mechanical coverage offered on new and used vehicles.
“Powertrain” or “Drivetrain” warranties generally cover the engine, transmission and other mechanical components, and are commonly featured in vehicle ads because of their long length of coverage. Most new vehicle powertrain warranties last for five or six years, with some brands offering up to 10 years of coverage. For new hybrid electric powered vehicles, some manufacturers offer an additional warranty to cover components that are specific to these vehicles.
Bumper-to-Bumper
Corrosion
The “basic” or “bumper-to-bumper” warranty is the most comprehensive factory warranty and covers all the original components and systems of a vehicle, excluding wear-and-tear items like tires, brake pads and wiper blades. One important area this type of warranty covers is the electrical systems. Today, vehicles are packed with electronics and computers, and repairing these can get expensive. The bumper-tobumper warranty on a new vehicle usually lasts for three years or 36,000 miles, with some brands extending coverage to four years and 50,000 miles or five years and 60,000 miles.
Intended to convey the quality of a vehicle, some manufacturers cover repairs for rust or premature deterioration of major sheet metal with something called a “corrosion and rust” or “body integrity” warranty. If you spend a lot of time along the coast or in areas where salt is used on the roads, this coverage can be a significant benefit. Most corrosion warranties cover the vehicle for five to seven years.
Page 14
Vehicle Service Contracts Unlike warranties provided by the manufacturer with a new car or truck, vehicle service contracts (VSCs) are purchased by the consumer from a dealership or third-party. VSC coverage can be tailored to fit a customer’s needs and budget, and can cover mechanical components, electronics and even luxury equipment like power seats or a navigation system. A VSC like Ally Premier Protection covers up to 7,400 components in a vehicle and offers additional benefits including rental reimbursement, roadside 50 + Living | September 2018
assistance, towing and reimbursement for trip interruption caused by a breakdown. Even if a vehicle is covered by a manufacturer’s warranty, customers can still use these VSC benefits. With many consumers holding onto their vehicles longer, VSCs can extend the customer’s peace-ofmind beyond the end of a manufacturer’s warranty. For more information about new vehicle warranties visit the manufacturer’s website or local dealership. To learn more about vehicle service contracts, visit the Ally Premier Protection website at ally.com/auto/vehicle-protection.

Wines are coming into this country from around the world. That’s a good thing! But, with all the choices, we have forgotten our own west coast. New grapes and new styles are burgeoning! Our Fall class offered through Osher Lifelong Learning (OLLI) at UNCA will feature the new world of old world grapes out west. No longer just Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, west coast wineries are growing grapes once only seen in the international section of your local wine shop or on high end restaurant menus. Let’s start with a few red grapes taking hold. Barbera is believed to have originated in Piedmonte, Italy, as far back as 1246! During the 19th and 20th centuries, as Italian immigrants arrived in this country, so did Barbera taking root in California. Today, Barbera, known for it’s deep color and soft tannins is not only in California but flourishing in Oregon. Idiot’s Grace, an organic farm offers a Barbera that is dark, deep and assertive. Beckmen, in the Santa Ynez Valley, makes a wine from the French grape Grenache that offers aromas of bright red fruits including strawberry, cranberry and pomegranate. Beckmen also grows other red Rhone grapes including Mourvedre and Counoise and white grapes such as Grenache Blanc, Viognier and Marsanne. Grenache is known for its versatility and this one is no exception. Sourcing grapes from all over the west coast, Broc Cellars makes a great bottle of Carignan, a red, French grape of Spanish origin. Carignan is a medium bodied, earthy grape that produces red fruit forward wines with baking spice flavors and a hint of umami. This versatile grape is an easy match for foods ranging from aged Gouda to butternut squash soup to shitake mushrooms!
Inspired by the similarity of Sonoma County’s climate and topography to his native northern Italy, winery founder Edoardo Seghesio planted a vineyard of Sangiovese in 1910! Those vines are the oldest Sangiovese vines in America and provide a rich source for unique clones. Seghesio also has vineyards of Aglianico, a gritty Italian red grape from Compagna and Arneis, a white grape from the Langhe region of Italy. Other old world white grapes are growing everywhere too! Thought to be of Spanish origin and grown throughout the Mediterranean, Vermentino produces a full bodied wine with floral aromas. Marauder, a California winery, offers an oak-aged Vermentino with traditional aromas and flavors of citrus leaf, green apples, ripe lime and mango. Albarino, a Spanish grape, produced by California based Klinker Brick has met with critical acclaim. The wine, mirroring the Spanish version, has a golden hue in the glass, aromas of stone fruit, pear and honeydew melon with flavors of green apple and peach. The French grape Semillon is usually blended with Sauvignon Blanc to produce White Bordeaux. The climate, particularly the cool nights, is just right in Washington State to produce a rich and complex Semillon wine with good acidity. Blended with a small percentage of Sauvignon Blanc, this Semillon offered by L’Ecole presents orange blossom on the nose and a palate with layers of fresh lemongrass, yellow apple and melon. Yes, continue to investigate the world of grapes, but don’t forget the international grapes made wine on our own west coast!

Recipe for Pasta Bolognese
Bolognese sauce is a meat-based red sauce originating in the Bologna region of Italy.
This rich sauce is perfectly paired with broad, flat styles of pasta, and the slow cooking process creates a hearty, deep flavor that can’t be matched by pre-made sauces. Below is a slightly simplified version of this classic staple of Italian cuisine.
5 cloves garlic, minced 1 cup dry red wine
2 cans of whole peeled tomatoes, chopped ½ cup tomato paste 1 cup beef or chicken broth 2 bay leaves
Ingredient List:
1 tablespoon dried basil
1 ½ pounds ground beef (substitute ½ pound of beef for ground veal for a more authentic flavor)
½ teaspoon dried oregano
4 tablespoons olive oil 1 medium onion, chopped 1 medium carrot, chopped 1 celery stalk, chopped September 2018 | 50 + Living
¼ teaspoon nutmeg ¼ tablespoon red pepper flakes 1 pound of pasta of choice
continued on page 18 Page 17
Cooking Instructions: Begin by heating the olive oil over medium high heat in a Dutch oven or large saucepan until it begins to shimmer. Add the onion, celery, carrot, and garlic. SautĂŠ until the vegetables are tender, about 8 minutes. Add the ground beef and cook until it browns, mixing it and breaking it up to ensure even cooking. Next, add the red wine along with all of the herbs, and simmer until the liquid has reduced by about half. When the liquid has reduced, add the tomatoes, tomato paste, and broth. Bring the sauce to a slow rolling boil and cover. Let it simmer for at least 45 minutes. For a richer, deeper flavor, reduce the heat slightly and let the sauce simmer for up to three hours. The last twenty minutes of simmering is the perfect time to prepare whichever pasta you have selected. The most common pastas served with Bolognese sauce are tagliatelle, fettuccine, lasagna, rigatoni, or penne. Â When the sauce has finished simmering, salt and pepper to taste, then serve immediately over pasta. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired.

Bolognese sauce is one of the most flexible Italian sauces. There are countless regional varieties and family recipes dating all the way back to the 18th century. As such, there is plenty of room for experimentation. Many people substitute the ground beef for ground pork, or add pancetta to the mix. While the original versions of Bolognese sauce did not include herbs as seasoning, most modern takes on the dish do. For the sake of simplicity, a pre-mixed Italian seasoning can be substituted for the dried herbs without harming the deep flavors this sauce is known for. For a complete dinner, consider pairing this dish with a dry, medium-bodied red wine and a warm side of garlic bread! Â Ee

After more than a century of debate over the role of salt in human health, the overwhelming medical evidence makes it clear that reducing salt in the U.S. diet may pose a greater risk to many consumers. Consider these four common myths about salt:
Myth 1: Americans eat more salt than ever Military records from the early 1800s up to WWII show that the average soldier was consuming between 6,000 and 6,800 mg/ day of sodium. We eat about half of that today, and that number has remained consistent since WWII. The advent of refrigeration meant that we could preserve food with less salt, but salt remains a critical ingredient for myriad other functions.
Myth 2: Salt consumption leads to hypertension According to Dr. Jan Staessen, head of the Research Unit on Hypertension at the University of Leuven in Belgium, “The evidence relating blood pressure to salt intake does not translate into an increased risk of incident hypertension in people consuming a usual salt diet.”
Myth 3: Americans could massively reduce their salt consumption without any negative health consequences Dr. Andrew Mente, of McMaster University in Canada, and his team conducted the largest ever epidemiologic study of the September 2018 | 50 + Living
impact of sodium intake on blood pressure, cardiovascular disease risk and mortality. “We found that regardless of whether people have high blood pressure, low-sodium intake is related to more heart attacks, strokes and deaths compared to average intake,” he said.
Myth 4: The U.S. population would gain significant health benefits from major population-wide salt reduction The FDA recommends a maximum daily limit of 2,300 mg of sodium per day and a maximum of 1,500 mg for people with certain conditions. Salt is 40 percent sodium. According to Dr. Michael H. Alderman of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, “Sodium consumption around the globe has a mean of about 3,600 mg/day, and a range from 2,600-5,000 mg/day. This mid-range describes about 90 percent of the world’s population. ... Optimal survival is realized by those whose intake is between 2,800 and 5,000 mg/day. Specifically, there is no evidence of a superior health outcome at intakes less than 2,000 mg/day compared with those in the usual range.” Salt is essential for life. In fact, no mineral is more essential to human survival than sodium because it allows nerves to send and receive electrical impulses, helps your muscles stay strong and keeps your cells and brain functioning. However, sodium chloride (salt) is a nutrient that the body cannot produce, and therefore it must be consumed. The average American eats about 3,400 mg per day of sodium, according to The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, right in the middle of the healthy range. Ee Page 19

For over 150 years, denim has been an enduring facet of fashion in America. Originally produced in Italy and France, denim was made popular in the United States by shop owner Levi Strauss and tailor Jacob Davis. In the late 1800s, Strauss sold the fabric to Davis from his California dry goods store. Davis purchased this sturdy fabric to make the rugged pants needed by gold miners and cowboys. Davis’s idea to use copper rivets at stress points to increase the garments durability was patented in 1873. Today, this twill-weave of strong indigo-dyed cotton yarns is one of the world’s most frequently worn fabrics. Slowly, but surely, denim evolved from being the fabric used to make clothing for hard-working men to a sought-after fashionable fabric for both men and women. After the end of World War I, Western movies and dude ranch vacations became popular. Wearing Western wear became a symbol of this newfound luxury and way of life. Known as “play clothes,” denim wear was also designed for women who enjoyed leisure activities such as tennis and frolicking at the beach. World War II changed the course of fashion when women entered the Page 20
workforce, but it didn’t change the fabric used. The all-in-one denim jumpsuit, personified by Rosie the Riviter, became the unofficial uniform of female factory workers. The denim “popover dress” was worn by upper-class women who suddenly found themselves doing their own housework as so many of their housekeepers went to work for the war effort. Wearing bluejeans became controversial in the 1950s when teenagers wore them as a symbol of unrest and defiance. Denim jackets worn by gangs unified their undertaking to undermine authority. This bad-boy image, popularized by actors such as James Dean and Marlon Brando, led many schools to ban bluejeans. The 1960s introduced the free-spirited hippie movement with hiphugging, bellbottomed, embroidered, and patchwork jeans. During the 1970s, denim became mainstream and an essential aspect of major fashion designers. The 1980s brought in stone- and acid-washing to create unique finishes, and by the end of the 1990s bluejeans were considered to be a high fashion item with some designers selling their jeans for $3000 or higher. 550 + Living | September 2018
All of this brings us to 2018 when cotton denim remains the most popular fabric in history. I don’t think Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis could have imagined the influence their original design would play on fashion around the world, decade after decade. Today’s denim style is as versatile as the fabric itself. Along with the traditional jean pant, you’ll find shirts, skirts, dresses, jackets, coats, and every accessory imaginable— all made from denim. Of course, every new season brings a new spin on how to wear this enduring fabric, and there are several new fads hitting the streets now. Referred to as the “ultra cuff,” some pant legs are so long, they are turned up into cuffs that measure 15 inches or more. Another trend has the bottom of five or more jeans cut off and then sewn onto a pant leg creating rows of jean hemlines. I’ve never claimed to understand fashion, and these next two trends are a perfect example of why: “destroyed denim” and “deconstructed denim.” Destroyed denim takes an article of clothing and literally destroys it. Sleeves are cut partially off and left to hang by a thread, hemlines are slashed at the front and left long in the back, fabric of the jean pant is cut out so that only the waistband, zipper, and side seams remain. The entire leg and pockets are exposed as well as any undergarments. “Deconstructed denim” is a method in which finished denim garments are cut apart and sewn back together in unconventional ways. Seams don’t match, random fabrics are inserted at odd points, and sleeves are put in at angles that look ridiculously uncomfortable. As a seamstress, this just gives me shivers. If you ever said you would never wear “mom jeans” again, you may need to retract your statement. These high-waisted, medium-washed jeans are back in fashion. They are actually more flattering on mature women because they form to a woman’s natural figure. Tucking your shirt in will help to emphasize a waistline, and with proper pocket placement, you can create September 2018 | 50 + Living
the illusion of a fuller derriere, or minimize a larger one. When purchasing, remember that fit is very important. These jeans sit high on your waist so make sure they aren’t too tight in the front, or too baggy in the back. It’s acceptable to wear the same wash for your top and bottom. This “double denim” monochromatic look can be slimming when the fabrics are the same shade of blue. It’s also trendy to wear very light washes with dark washes. Really, you can wear denim anyway that suits you. My favorite denim garment is the “Little Denim Dress.” This dress is the answer to, “What should I wear today?” because it can be dressed up or down, and take you everywhere from the office to a night out. Summer styles can easily convert to autumn by adding a cardigan and switching from sandals to ankle boots. While denim remains in fashion and has seen decades of growth, there has been a decline in sales the past couple of years. Women are choosing to wear stretchy yoga pants, leggings, and other athletic wear instead of traditional denim jeans. This is a reflection of today’s casual culture, and of choosing comfort over aesthetics. Known as the “athleisure” trend, this style once worn only inside a studio or gym, is often acceptable for work, school, and just about everywhere else. While the primary reason is comfort, the bright colors and patterns are enticing to consumers. Jean makers are avoiding the blues by designing new versions of the classic denim jean. Whatever future fashion trends come up, I’m sure denim will be on the list. I just hope the seams are sewn straight. Ee

Osteoporosis is Responsible for Millions of Broken Bones a Year. Do You Have It? (BPT) - As people age, they become more likely to develop osteoporosis, a disease that occurs when bones lose density and mass, which can cause them to be brittle, weak and easily broken. Dr. Rhonda Randall, chief medical officer for UnitedHealthcare Retiree Solutions, answers questions about osteoporosis and shares information about a test that can help diagnose osteoporosis or determine if you might be at risk.
How common is osteoporosis? An estimated 54 million Americans have osteoporosis or low bone mass (an increased risk for osteoporosis), according to the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF). Studies suggest that approximately half of women and a quarter of men age 50 and older will break a bone due to osteoporosis. It is responsible for 2 million broken bones and 75,000 deaths every year. Osteoporotic bone breaks most often occur in the hip, spine or wrist, but other bones can break too. Beyond significant, Page 22
often permanent pain, these fractures can have many other consequences, including frailty and limited mobility, complications related to the broken bone or the surgery to repair it, and the necessity of long-term care.
How is it diagnosed? Talking to your doctor will help ensure you get the test that may be needed to correctly diagnosis osteoporosis, which may be a simple bone mineral density (BMD) test like a DEXA scan. BMD tests can identify osteoporosis before a broken bone occurs and measure your response to treatment.
Should I get tested? The NOF recommends BMD tests for women age 65 or older and men age 70 or older. Osteoporosis is more common in women than men, and more common after menopause, so women should begin talking to their doctor about osteoporosis before menopause. Anyone with several risk factors - controllable and 50 + Living |September 2018
past bone density results and whether you are taking an osteoporosis treatment. Discuss your needs with your health care provider.
uncontrollable - should also discuss it at a younger age than the general guidelines. Consider asking your doctor if you should complete a bone density test to determine how healthy your bones are. If you’re a UnitedHealthcare member, you might get a call offering an osteoporosis screening that wouldn’t require a prescription from your doctor.
Does Medicare cover these tests? Medicare plans cover the full cost of bone mass measurement testing once every 24 months for people who meet certain criteria, but the test may be covered more often if deemed medically necessary.
What do the test results mean? Your doctor will discuss your test with you, and help you interpret the results. Results are reported using T-scores, which show how much less dense your bones are than those of a healthy 30-year-old. A T-score of -1.0 or above is normal bone density, and a T-score of -2.5 or below is a diagnosis of osteoporosis, according to the World Health Organization. Although not everyone who has low bone mass will develop osteoporosis, those with low bone mass are at higher risk.
How often should you be tested? BMD testing frequency depends on factors including age,
What else should I know? There is no one single way to ensure healthy bones, but there are many great habits that can put you on the right path. Incorporate enough calcium and vitamin D in your diet; avoid smoking and drinking; maintain a regular exercise routine (you might want to give yoga a try!); and take steps to minimize your risk of falls. If you have been diagnosed with osteoporosis or have had fractures, talk with your doctor about medication options, which can vary based on gender, age, bone health and other factors. Ee

Considering a New Cat? Five Reasons to Consider Adoption
Cats are beautiful creatures. With a range of personalities from playful and interactive to subdued and independent, adopting a cat can be just the right answer for people looking for their new family pet. Given the influx of abandoned kittens and cats along roadsides and at shelters, adopting a cat provides an added act of goodwill when deciding on a pet. Benefits of adopting from a rescue center or shelter include the following: 1. Staff get to know the personality of the cat and can provide insightful recommendations such as whether or not a particular cat would be good with kids, good with other pets, or appropriate for a particular home environment. 2. Kittens will typically be neutered before being allowed to be adopted after approximately 12 weeks of age. 3. Initial medical/vet checks, including the first set of vaccinations, will usually have been done, with the cost simply included in the relatively low adoption fee. 4. Recommendations of types or brands of food that the cat is comfortable eating will already be established. 5. Age and species of cat that best suits the adoptee’s interest can generally be accommodated given the range of cats brought in. Welcoming a new cat, or any pet, is an exciting time. The next time your family is preparing to bring a new cat into the home, consider a cat adoption. Don’t be afraid of lengthy application procedures. This is only done in order to ensure a safe and best possible match between pet and owner. Ee Page 24

90 Percent of Homes Have Hard Water:
(BPT) - Hard water, which contains high levels of calcium and magnesium, can be found in nearly 90 percent of American homes. These minerals cause scaling, a buildup that clogs waterlines and plumbing forcing appliances to work harder and operate less efficiently. The scale may also harbor bacteria. The only way to truly remove the hard and soft scale from household water systems is with salt-based water softeners. The benefits of saltbased water softening are significant. Hard water scaling can cause your showerhead to lose up to 75 percent of its flow rate in 18 months. Hard water also interacts negatively with soap, reducing its cleaning power. Soft water is up to 12 times more effective at cleaning dishes than increasing the amount of detergent used. According to the Water Quality Research Foundation for washing machines, the most important factor in removing stains from clothing was water softness. Reduction of water hardness was up to 100 times more effective at stain removal than increasing the deterPage 26
gent dose or washing with hotter water. In fact, soft water can reduce soap use by as much as half. Hard water can also reduce the efficiency of water heaters and increase electricity costs by as much as 48 percent, according to the Battelle Memorial Institute. Hard water scaling can also affect your health. The piping used in home plumbing, whether copper or PVC, has very smooth interior surfaces that don’t
permit bacteria to settle and grow. However, hard water results in scale formation on the interior surfaces of those pipes, providing a perfect home for bacteria.
Researchers at the School of Sustainable Engineering at Arizona State University found bacteria may grow in pipes filled with hard scale and soft scale at the same rate. This is important because some forms of water conditioning produce this soft scale. The solution is to remove hard and soft scale in the pipes with a salt-based water softener. Hard water you use to wash your fresh fruits and vegetables may contain more bacteria, and the problem isn’t only in the kitchen. When you take a hot shower, the steam you are inhaling can also contain the same microbial contamination that is in the rest of your plumbing, exposing you to bacteria such as Legionella, which can cause Legionnaire’s disease. A salt-based water softener is the most functional and cost-effective means of removing hardness minerals. It is a tool to improve health and lower maintenance costs for home appliances like dishwashers and washing machine. It also reduces the need for detergents and high-water temperatures, leading to a smaller household carbon footprint. Ee 50 + Living |September 2018
might be missing out on important vitamins and minerals due to their restricted diet. Many cereals are fortified, meaning that they have vitamins and minerals added, or enriched, which means that the vitamins lost in the manufacturing process are replaced. Add to that milk— which provides calcium and protein—and you’ve got a meal to be reckoned with! However, not all cereals are created equal, so when buying cereal look for a cereal that contains at least 3 grams of fiber per serving. Fiber lowers cholesterol and helps keep blood sugar levels stable, which is important as lows and highs in blood sugar can mean the body becomes resistant to insulin, a hormone that helps it to process blood sugar. Over time, this condition can lead to diabetes. Fiber also takes time to be digested so you stay fuller for longer, so if you eat cereal for breakfast you’ll be better able to resist that well-known ritual of the mid-morning snack.
Breakfast Cereals are Mostly Made from Whole Grains In additon to delicious. You will also get a variety of nutrients
Cereal really is the perfect meal. Not only is it quick and easy to prepare, but it’s nutritious and low in calories. It can provide at least 25 per cent of everything a multivitamin can, which is especially important for anyone who’s trying to lose weight and
Also check for the word “whole” in the list of ingredients. This means that the grains haven’t been stripped of the kernels’ beneficial bran and germ layers, a process that also removes more than half of the nutrients including fiber: the least amount of processing, the better the cereal. The more closely cereal resembles grain—think whole oats—the better it is for you. continued on page 28

Cereals with no more than 10 grams of sugar per serving should be avoided as any more than this then the sugar will have been added and as such will just be unwanted extra calories. Sugar can also raise blood sugar too fast resulting in the body crashing and you feeling hungry as soon as an hour after eating. If your favorite cereal is high in sugar, don’t immediately discard it though, especially if it’s also high in fiber, just choose the low-sugar version, if available. While checking the calorie content is a good idea, don’t worry too much about fat. Most fat in cereal is the healthy monounsaturated kind found in nuts. However, trans fats should be checked. And even if not present, check for partially hydrogenated oil as this contains trans fat. Under FDA guidelines, if a product has less than half a gram of trans fat per serving, manufacturers can state the product contains 0 grams. And while less than half a gram of trans fat doesn’t sound much, research shows that even a few grams a day can be harmful to the heart. Checking the calorie content in respect of portion size is also a good idea as most of us pour twice the amount of the “average serving” listed on the box! Use a measuring cup to see how much you’re having. Your total calories (including milk) from your cereal should be no more than around 400.

CDC Urges Public To Start Conversation About Sepsis (BPT) - Each year, at least 1.7 million Americans develop sepsis, and nearly 270,000 die as a result. While anyone can get an infection, and almost any infection can lead to sepsis, only 55% of Americans have heard of sepsis.[1] Sepsis is the body's extreme response to an infection. It is life-threatening, and without timely treatment, sepsis can rapidly lead to tissue damage, organ failure, and death. Sepsis happens when an infection you already have - in your skin, lungs, urinary tract, or somewhere else - triggers a chain reaction throughout your body.
Start the conversation about sepsis today with your doctor or nurse using these five questions: 1. How can I protect myself from sepsis? It's important to know the signs and symptoms of sepsis, and act fast if sepsis is suspected. Signs and symptoms of sepsis can include one or a combination of any of the following: confusion or disorientation; shortness of breath; high heart rate; fever, or shivering, or feeling very cold; extreme pain or discomfort; and clammy or sweaty skin. An infection that's not getting better or is getting worse can lead to sepsis. Get medical care immediately if you suspect sepsis. 2. How can I prevent infections? Talk to your doctor or nurse about steps you can take to prevent infections that can lead to sepsis. To prevent infections, take good care of chronic conditions and get recommended vaccines. Also, practice good hygiene like washing your hands and keeping cuts clean and covered until healed. September 2018 | 50 + Living
3. Who is at higher risk for developing sepsis? Certain people are at higher risk, including adults 65 or older; people with chronic medical conditions, such as diabetes, lung disease, cancer, and kidney disease; people with weakened immune systems; and children younger than one. 4. How do I know if my infection could be leading to sepsis? If you or your loved one suspects sepsis or has an infection that's not getting better or is getting worse, ask your doctor or nurse, "Could this infection be leading to sepsis?" ACT FAST and get medical care IMMEDIATELY. 5. How can sepsis be treated? A person who develops sepsis should be treated with antibiotic(s) as soon as possible, in addition to other therapies that the doctor or nurse decides are appropriate for that patient, such as maintaining blood flow to organs or receiving intravenous (IV) fluids. A doctor or nurse should also check on the patient frequently and reassess antibiotic therapy within 24-48 hours to stop or adjust therapy as needed. Remember, sepsis is a medical emergency. Improved recognition and timely treatment of sepsis increases your chances of survival and decreases the likelihood of long-term effects. To learn more about sepsis and how to prevent infections, visit www.cdc.gov/sepsis. To learn more about antibiotic prescribing and use, visit www.cdc.gov/antibiotic-use.
