The Remodeling Institute is a non-profit trade association that elevates the professionalism of the remodeling and renovation industry. This publication is a network of companies that have agreed to follow a Code of Conduct, Standards of Practice and Association bylaws when they join Remodeling Institute. We hope that these commitments help you make an informed decision when deciding to invest money in your personal living space.

Building a Better Experience

REMODELING CHECKLIST

Renovating your house is a big task. Not only do you have to put time and effort into picking the right design, but you must give a large amount of trust over to the remodeling contractor you hire to get the job done. With so much riding on who you pick to lead your renovation, here is a list of must for how to choose the right contractor that can help you save valuable time and money.

Hire Local Remodeling Institute Member

When you hire a Remodeling Institute member, you can rest assured that they will be familiar with your area. They will be up to date on code restrictions and local guidelines that could a ect the building. Supporting local contractors also uplifts the economy in your town which is a win for everyone!

Use the listings and chose which Remodeling Institute members you want to contact.

Read Reviews

Reading reviews and asking to see examples of past work is an easy way to vet a contractor. Look for reviews that mention work completed on time and on budget. If you are having trouble deciding, ask for contact details for a past client and speak to them about their experience with the contractor.

Receive Multiple Bids

Don’t rely on getting the best bid from the first contractor you talk to. Open up your project to receive multiple bids and then compare them. Look at building materials, work methods, timelines, and cost.

Check Insurance

Before hiring a contractor, always check that they have the proper insurance for your job. Get proper documentation that proves insurance and call the insurance company directly to verify the coverage. If a contractor does not have insurance, you could be liable for accidents that occur on your property. Request a certificate of insurance for at least general liability and workers compensation. State and local laws may dictate the type of insurance your hired contractor must have.

REMODELING CHECKLIST

Get a Contract

Does the contractor provide a comprehensive contract? Everything from the moment you decide to go with a specific contractor should be recorded to cover both the contractor and the homeowner from any legal problems. Check with the contractor before you decide to use them that they provide a contract and that it covers every detail.

Anticipate Delays

It’s important to know that delays will happen. Keep this in mind when hiring a contractor especially based on the availability that they have now and down the line. If a contractor only has availability of one month or a few weeks, a delay in your project could mean an even bigger delay in the time the contractor has to finish the job.

Ask Questions

Before you sign a contract, ask questions to clarify the contractor’s experience level and to help them understand your project. Here are a few examples of questions that you should ask:

Are you licensed?

What is an estimated timeline for my project?

Can you provide me with references?

What experience do you have doing this particular work?

What challenges regarding this project do you expect?

The Consumer Federation of America (“CFA”), the Missouri Attorney General and the Kansas Attorney all reported that the #2 most consumer complaints were home improvement contractors and repair services. Many consumers complained of shoddy and incomplete home repair work performed by individuals without the proper licensure or expertise. Consumers often pay for services in advance and have trouble obtaining a refund or corrections to the shoddy work when the relationship deteriorates. Agencies serve a critical role here, mediating thousands of these disputes for consumers who have no other recourse.

2. Reliability and Professionalism: Researching remodeling contractors allows you to assess their reliability and professionalism. Look for contractors who communicate effectively, meet deadlines, and handle unforeseen challenges with grace.

The Remodeling Institute Futures Fund has been established as a way to enhance and promote careers in the remodeling industry. The Remodeling Institute Futures Fund will focus fundraising and giving efforts toward attracting individuals to careers in the industry and improving training, educational, and job opportunities that are available from remodeling contractors, subcontractors, and related supplier companies.

GOALS:

• Enhance the public perception about careers in the remodeling industry.

• Create opportunities for those looking for rewarding careers to experience and understand the career paths and rewards within the remodeling industry.

• Work with the community and secondary schools to prioritize education and training in skills important to the remodeling industry.

• Provide resources to assist individuals that show interest in establishing a career in the remodeling industry through education, training and exposure to remodeling contractors, subcontractors, and suppliers.

HOW:

• The Remodeling Institute Futures Fund is established within the framework of the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation which allows donations to be tax advantaged for the giver.

• The Remodeling Institute Futures Fund will seek donations from both individuals and companies to grow the fund’s capacity to achieve its goals.

• Donations toward the goals of the fund will be directed by the Remodeling Institute Futures Fund Advisory Committee for distribution.

• The Remodeling Institute Futures Fund will be marketed within and by the Remodeling Institute
