Founded in 1986, Architecture, Incorporated is a 60-person, award-winning planning, architecture, and interior design practice. We are united in the belief that as trusted advisers and design leaders, we reach beyond the predictable to turn vision into reality while solving complex challenges for public, private, and government clients—improving quality of life through the built environment.

Our projects range from complex renovations to new construction for commercial, hospitality, education, healthcare, senior living, multifamily, and sports and recreation clients across the region. A sense of comfort and familiarity has always reinforced the success of the guest experience. Quality environments, attention to detail, anticipated needs, friendly discourse, breaking bread—all are requirements enhanced by the interaction of people in a comfortable, seemingly familiar setting.

We create environments that encourage guests to feel not just accommodated but that surpasses their expectations. We understand the needs of guests to sense a level of value and richness. A complex mix of needs, routines, and emotions, that link their home and family to these unfamiliar settings, must be acknowledged and anticipated.

The environments we design integrate the qualities expected by the guests, allowing them to settle in and feel comfortable. We know much activity is not seen by your guests while you provide seemingly effortless service and unmatched accommodation. We understand and create designs that allow their pulse to slow, spirit to recharge, and spark the desire to return.

Our firm has a large portfolio of restaurant projects, providing a range of planning and architectural services for multiple franchise clients including Mellow Mushroom, BarTaco, Basic Burger, and many others.

TRENDS

An al fresco dining space can be an experience for diners and a boon for owners through increased traffic and revenue, provided it is well-designed and properly equipped—it’s more than a few tables and chairs outside. Outdoor dining can be built for less than interior space, but is also subject to a variety of additional health, safety, and zoning regulations; it’s a careful balancing act. Functional considerations include service entrances, accessibility, employee flow, proximity to restrooms, and all of the mechanical systems requirements for an outdoor space.

Aesthetics can include fire and water elements that would be impractical inside, including fire pits and exotic landscaping. Sun shading including awning, trellises, and umbrellas can help to control temperature and can also serve to create a sense of place. Ultimately, the outdoor experience must be an extension of the interior, supporting the brand experience.

TRENDS

The design of a restaurant should inform the type of bar it contains—a high visibility bar can draw in diners. Aesthetic and functional design depends on the type of restaurant, cuisine, and the desired ambiance. Is it a bustling after work destination, or a quieter extension of the dining room? In addition to the main bar and service area, table seating and lounge areas play an important role in a restaurant, especially when the lounge serves as a waiting area for diners. These areas can help to create mood and draw a crowd that might be captured with bar seating alone. A well-designed lounge area may be popular before a meal, but it can also encourage diners to linger after they eat, either in a quieter low seating space or a higher energy high table and stool arrangement. In addition to ambiance, functional considerations of a restaurant bar include the server’s pathway to the bar if it provides beverage service for the dining room, and proximity to the kitchen if it serves a food menu.

MELLOW MUSHROOM

Fast growing pizza franchise Mellow Mushroom is known for pushing the envelope, and for its unique restaurants across the nation. To further this urban brand, Mellow is always looking for new and unique expressions of its concept. Creating interest and enriching the guest experience is what keeps guests coming back for more. Expressed through features such as exposed concrete flooring and interior brick walls, unique art features, and colorful booths and banquettes, each Mellow Mushroom restaurant highlights its individual personality while furthering the Mellow brand.

Architecture, Incorporated has worked with Mellow Mushroom’s art and construction teams to create rich, engaging environments in over a dozen locations— each with its own story.

OPALINE BAR AND BRASSERIE

Interior architecture for the renovation of a hotel lobby bar, restaurant, and outdoor patio located in Washington, DC totaling 3,575 sf including selective demolition and construction, new finishes, and new equipment.

The two-part destination includes an 80-seat bar and 64-seat brasserie, with both spaces boasting a cohesive mix of curved brass lighting fixtures, black-andwhite tiled flooring, retro prints, and blue and gold furnishings throughout.

DISTRICT BITES

Architecture, Incorporated provided full architecture and interior design services for the 14,500 sf build-out of District Bites inside of District E, an all-in-one esportsfocused venue including a restaurant, bar, competition studio, and professional esports team training center.

The vision behind Monumental Sports & Entertainment’s District E was to transform the entertainment experience with a live event theater offering immersive experiences in esports, music, event programming, and community events, maximizing exposure to their entire portfolio of professional teams. The cutting-edge facility is a competition and training venue for two esports franchises with a best-in-class team practice facility for gaming athletes and a public-facing 150-person Esports Competition Studio.

Centrally located in Washington, DC immediately adjacent to Capital One Arena, District E hosts its own shows, viewing parties, corporate events, and other programs as well as pre- and post-game events. Stateof-the-art LED walls, tickers, and video boards coupled with dynamic lighting, color, and materials create a sleek, modern, fully immersive digital experience.

BARTECA RESTAURANT GROUP 04

Architecture, Inc. has completed multiple locations of both Barcelona Wine Bar and Bartaco taqueria. Barcelona locations include the Cathedral Heights neighborhood in Washington, DC and Reston Town Center in Northern Virginia. The tapas restaurant takes its inspiration from travels through Spain, and combines a rich palette of rustic materials like roughhewn wood and natural stone. Organic textures are offset with sophisticated artwork and contemporary lighting.

For multiple locations of the casual Bartaco, a whitewashed interior and hanging baskets contrast with polished concrete floors and travel-inspired artwork. For both the Mosaic and Reston locations in Northern Virginia and the King of Prussia location outside of Philadelphia, generous outdoor spaces and large bars create a festive atmosphere.
