tories are the medium of our lives, giving us a context for relating our key life memories to others. All religions, cultures, and traditions are based on collective storytelling or mythology.

An individual has their own personal mythology that if realized can bring greater understanding to the events of one’s life and their significance in one’s personal evolution. One’s personal mythology is based on their own interpretive framework for the events of their life. The highlights and turning points in one’s life are like key scenes in the movie of our lives.

Writing your memoir is not writing your autobiography. An autobiography and a memoir are both written as first-person accounts, yet a memoir is not an entire life story.

Rather, the memoir might focus on one event in one’s life, such as a struggle with cancer or climbing

Mt. Everest. Your memoir wants to capture the events and narratives that will intrigue the reader and serve the wisdom you have culled from your most dynamic experiences.

These timeless universal roles we tend to play in the drama of life are shaped around life events where many times something of high value is at stake. This fosters both intrigue and a dynamic tension to carry the reader through the story arc and create greater rapport with the reader. A story arc is the chronological structuring of your story that takes the reader through the rising actions, climax, and resolution.

It all begins on page one with the first paragraph, this is where you need to emotionally engage the reader as if the book was written for them.

AUTHOR BIO My career journey truly started right out of high school. While going to college, I worked the front office for a commercial photographer. I handled accounting and customer service but was asked to do sales. I let them know about my lack of sales training and they threw the yellow pages at me and said Go for it! (Not to age myself but Google did NOT exist then.). So I wrote myself a spiel and picked up the phone to start making cold calls. And it worked!

From photography I moved into prepress and then into printing, giving me the best training at all areas of marketing. Inkcentric started in 2000 and I took over full ownership in 2008. That year we also became a corporation and a female-owned business.

Write a Non-Fiction Book that Bursts into the Marketplace

here’s no doubt about it – writing a book can feel perilous. When you’re in the Zone and sailing on, great. But what happens when a storm hits? It’s all too easy to abandon ship. The problem happens when you don’t start writing again and that book begins to haunt you.

Okay, belabored metaphors aside, there are some techniques to help you stay in the flow and not get too discouraged as you write.

And here’s the biggee:

1. DO include a simple and easy action step. This is a huge benefit for your readers, especially if you are an expert who teaches others how to do something. An easy-to-complete action step allows the reader to feel empowered.

This is a gift that you, the author, gave them.

They will love you for helping them move forward.

2. DO include an inspirational quotation. Who doesn’t like to feel inspired?

3. DO take frequent breaks. Talk a walk, breathe some fresh air, drink some water or tea, stretch, and just allow yourself to detach for a while.

4. DO have strategies for taking notes. Use the voice memo app on your phone or go old school and carry a notebook with you. Ideas tend to come in when you are focused on something else.

5. DON’T feel you have to write in sequence.

Many times, what happens is that the ideas start to flow, but the author will shut them down because “it doesn’t fit here.” DON’T DO THAT! When those ideas are zooming in, start a new section and get them down on paper before you lose them. You can organize the materials later, in editing. When you are in the writing phase, avoid the temptation to block yourself.

Those are the best tips for getting out of your own way and keeping at it. After all, if writing a book were easy, everyone would be an author. Stick to it and most of all, have fun with it!

WHAT TO DO WITH YOUR BOOK TO TRULY MAKE IT A SUCCESS Your book is really just the beginning…

A

ll that effort (not to mention time and money) that you’ve put into writing, editing, re-editing, and finally publishing your book may be enough to want to make you jump on the first plane to a tropical island and spend a month lounging in an overthe-water hut, sipping margaritas and napping.

But your work isn’t over. The finished book in your hands is the first step of your journey as an author.

Now that you’re published, it’s your job to be a marketer too!

You can do some of the best promotion for your book, even if you’ve never done any marketing in your career. Here are some tips to help you become your book’s best marketer.

1. Tell everyone you wrote a book.

Sounds pretty obvious right? But the truth is, many authors think

that if they post about their book on social media one time, they’ve done what’s needed. You have to post about it a lot more than that. I mean like 3 times a week for months at a time. I know that may sound like an awful lot, but when you think about how the average person needs at least a dozen touchpoints to make a purchase, if you aren’t repeating yourself online consistently, you won’t get noticed.

2. Share your mission.

To get your ideal reader invested in your work (and to invest in your book) you have to tell them why you wrote the book.

This includes: • who the book is for • how it can help the reader • what transformation the reader can expect from it When people know your reasons for writing and the mission you have in your heart, they’re much

more likely to jump in if it resonates with them too.

3. Invite them to take action.

Again, this is something really simple that often gets overlooked. This is formally known as a Call To Action or CTA. It doesn’t have to be “buy my book” every time, but it should certainly invite your ideal reader into your community and more.

LinkedIn Just Added New Features to Help You Sell More New elements to your ‘services’ listing are designed to help you generate business. upgrade, allowing authors and entrepreneurs to to highlight what you’re really good at.

This new “digital word of mouth” feature shows that you are open for business and exactly what you have to offer.

With over 10 million small businesses using LinkedIn, the more you can narrow down your expertise and skills, the more likely you are to match with new clients and even readers!

inkedIn has come a long way over the past few years.

I’ve seen many of my clients make the successful transition from Facebook to the more grown-up platform but I still think there’s more authors and entrepreneurs can do on LinkedIn to boost sales and get in front of more readers.

LinkedIn recently announced two new elements that let users list specific services they provide directly on their profile, while displaying examples of projects they’ve completed to show off those services.

This means your profile is: 1- more searchable when using the services feature, because your profile can now be found in search results for those service

listings, and 2- clients can see examples of your work directly from your profile. LinkedIn says their goal with this new feature is to add credibility to a profile and who doesn’t want to generate more authority in their field?

Here’s how it works: Services pages connect to your profile, so rather than being associated with an organization, your services are linked directly to you. On the flipside, if you are a match for a service search, your profile is displayed in those search results. If I’m searching for marketing, and you have marketing displayed in your services list, LinkedIn will serve you up on a silver platter and I can get to know more about you in one place. This is definitely an

The second feature just launched, that you should be taking advantage of, is LinkedIn’s new media showcase. The showcase lets potential clients preview your favorite completed projects to further highlight the services you can offer them. This creates a space for you to provide realtime proof, to show that you can do what you say you can do. So go ahead and show off by taking advantage of everything new LinkedIn is offering.

To find out if you’re eligible for this new rollout, head over to your profile page, and look for a box under your profile photo that allows you to “add services”.

Fill out the form with as much detail as possible and the services you add will be directly added to your profile. If this doesn’t show as an option for you, you will see a link to join the waitlist to be eligible in the Fall.

How to Become A Bestseller By Breaking the Rules

here are some authors who walk through my door and immediately get it. They know that profit isn’t the first line item. They understand that there will be work involved. And they are committed to showing up every day. Merrill Chandler is a perfect example.

His bestselling book, The New F* Word keeps selling and keeps proving that the old rules of book sales and marketing are not the only path to success.

Stop With the Short Sell When authors and entrepreneurs want to give away as little as possible, it never works in their favor. A book isn’t enough this is why we talk about building your personal brand and putting yourself out there. Readers are expecting to build a relationship with you in some way. They want to know that you are committed to what you are telling them and if you continue to show up and give away more than you ask for, you put yourself in a different category completely. Instead of trying to push people into sleazy sales funnels, see how you can serve them instead.

Build A Smart System When he’s talking on stage, Merrill will tell attendees a very valuable piece of information and let them know that he can’t do a deep dive into that area right at the moment, but that everything else they want to know is in his book. He directs them to the book, where it’s free and they only pay shipping . This is where it gets really smart.

• They buy the book and pay shipping, which actually nets a profit. But it’s still at a price point readers want to pay.

• As soon as the purchase is complete, they are redirected to a bonus page.

• On the bonus page, for $37, they are offered several more ebooks and an audio version of The New F* Word. All of these bonuses are digital so the cost is low and it’s a tremendous value for the price point.

“To do this, you do have to buy inventory. You do have to have a reliable shipper. The cost of the lead, I profit by. More so than I do with other places I sell. 48% buy the bonus level which is a huge number. And these are all digital products, so there is no shipping or additional cost for that.”

the bonus package to one of his bootcamps. This way, he is building an ecosystem, where each product he puts online supports and points to other products he has online.

Always Build In A Sustainable Way The next piece of this is brilliant.

When he goes out and speaks, I’ve watched a room of 100 people where 95% buy the bootcamp or the upsell. Merrill is so good at showing the value people will get and so their conversion rate is very high. And again, they are constantly offering bonus options so people can get more if they want to, and usually they do.

Also I’ll just say that the price points are right, they are reasonable and they are in the range his target audience wants to spend so Merrill and his team have done their homework. From a marketing standpoint, they have identified their target market and

spending behavior really well.

They are not going out selling $4000 programs right off the bat. The offer is simple, it works, there’s high value, so it’s a winwin for everyone. People are blown away by the sheer amount and quality of the content, so they come back for more. This is the epitome of good sales all wrapped up in great packages.

Swag and Fan Clubs Merrill sold over 2,000 books before his book was ever published. The presale and launch party was record breaking! He beat Dave Ramsey and Napoleon Hill for that time period but if you talk to Merrill, you will learn that being bestseller and number one was never the initial goal. Here are a few of the things he does to stay in front of his readers.

1. A postcard with every book order that says something along the lines of: Thanks for getting the book, take a picture with the book, tag us and we will send you a tshirt! His entire language lets people know that he

is interested in building a relationship with them, with keeping it going, not just to sell and book and move onto the next. He’s getting massive buy in and loyalty and earning trust along the way because he is showing up for people. Something as simple as a shirt has created a lot of movement around his book, sales and personal brand.

2. Know. Like. Trust. Be creative, have fun, show your personality, be human, be vulnerable. Merrill developed his book idea and program in prison and he openly shares that with everyone who will listen.

3. Engage at every price point. This actually builds trust because buyers can implement at every stage and see that it works, and then they come back. Because he is building trust by offering free items, $8 items, $50, $97 items, etc. It’s like giving your buyer a stepladder and letting them take each next step when they’re ready.

uthors strive to do everything in their power to increase their book sales. One powerful tool that is often overlooked is the press kit. Press kits are essential to a successful marketing strategy. The press kit informs the media and other interested parties who the author is, what they have written, and why they should be interested.

Press kits are a great way to showcase an author’s work and pique the interest of potential publishers, agents, or readers.

The first step in creating a press kit is to gather all of the necessary information. This includes a biography, headshot, book cover, synopsis, and other supporting materials, such as reviews or articles about the author’s work.

Be sure to include links to active websites or blogs as well.

In any business, it is imperative that one looks the part. Once all materials are collected, it is time to design a professionallooking package. The press kit should be easy to read and visually appealing. An excellent way to do this is to use a template that will help make the content really stand out. Many free templates are available online, or professional designers can be engaged to create a custom press kit.

An Expert Power Bio summarizes the experience and expertise in any given field.

This can be helpful for media outlets or potential publishers who may want additional information about the author and the work being presented.

Including an Expert Power Bio is a great way to add credibility to the press kit.
