Our commitment to educational equity

The United States has a longstanding history of racism that has created inequities, predictable outcomes, and enduring barriers for people of color. Racism and anti-Blackness have penetrated every system and institution, including our education system where students of color have not received equitable learning opportunities. Our organization exists to uproot these deeply ingrained educational obstacles.

The Reading Partners community recognizes that learning to read is a civil right and we promote equity by helping students develop lifelong literacy skills and confidence to actualize their limit less potential. Our dedicated, student-centered team works across our core regions nationwide to partner with K-4 students—90+ percent of whom are students of color—and their families, as well as schools, community based organizations, volunteers, and AmeriCorps members to provide individualized tutoring and other evidence-based literacy support.

We also seek to increase literacy access for students by investing in bold, research-driven transformations and expanding into partnerships with organizations both within and beyond our regions. Whether through direct programming, our partnership delivery model, or transformative innovation, at Reading Partners we believe that providing all students with access to quality literacy support is an essential step in the pursuit of social justice.

A LETTER FROM THE CEO A LETTER FROM THE CEO A LETTER FROM THE CEO

To the Reading Partners community,

Since our founding in 1999, one thing has remained constant: our ability to transform. Whether that meant pivoting to online tutoring during the pandemic, re-envisioning our curriculum materials by writing our own book series, or expanding our reach to areas where we have no physical footprint, we have embraced program optimization and innovation in the interest of better supporting our students. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. conveyed a similar message about the importance of pursuing progress in the face of challenges when he famously said, “If you can’t fly, then run. If you can’t run, then walk. If you can’t walk, then crawl, but whatever you do, you have to keep moving.”

And yet, even with our ever-evolving approach to supporting early literacy growth, our overall mission has remained the same. Each of us is motivated by the vision of a world where educational equity is a reality. In the 2022-23 school year, we moved closer to that reality by mobilizing 7,405 tutors to support 6,068 students in building their foundational literacy skills. At the end of the year, those students had engaged in an average of 28 high-dosage tutoring sessions.

The pandemic showed us just how uncertain education can be, so Reading Partners having a clear path forward is one way to ensure students can be well-served across a range of variables. Our three-year strategic plan will serve as a map toward exponentially increasing educational access and early literacy support for students who need it most. Our three-pronged growth strategy includes expanding direct tutoring opportunities, developing and growing new partnerships, and investing in innovation and transformative bets.

After pivoting to Reading Partners Connects, our highly effective online tutoring platform, during the pandemic, we continued improving it to reach students in new time slots. As a result, by the 2026-27 school year, we hope to see more than a 20% increase in direct tutoring.

This past school year, we also launched a new partnership with a neighborhood-support nonprofit named Brilliant Detroit that allowed us to bring Reading Partners Connects to a region where we have no on-the-ground staff. What started out as a summer trial program has transformed into a

2

long-term partnership that’s impacting as many students as one of our largest regions. This and other new partnerships will allow us to engage 20,000 additional students by 2026-27.

Reading Partners has increasingly become an organization that invests in innovation and transformative bets. In addition to publishing our own book series that puts our students’ identities at the forefront of its stories, we’re increasing access to at-home self-learning tools, expanding summer programming, and scaling to rural communities. Our intention is for these projects to result in up to 15,000 additional students gaining access to high-quality literacy resources in the next few years.

Importantly, all of our goals are student-centered and affirm what we express in our Who We Are statement (see inside front cover), the public and unapologetic articulation of our commitment to educational equity that asserts our core set of collective beliefs. We are not an organization that limits race equity work to our hiring practices and diversity training. Rather, we also build it into how we promote and pursue our mission.

As ever, young people are the great hope of the world, and at Reading Partners we believe every one of them has incredible potential. By giving students the literacy tools and support they need, they become well-equipped to begin a journey of lifelong learning, setting them up to not just succeed, but to excel.

As we look ahead, we plan to collaborate with our committed supporters and partners to continue transforming lives through literacy. Innovation has already allowed us to reach more students, and with the rapid growth in education technology and artificial intelligence, more creative solutions to educational inequities are right around the corner. We hope you’re as excited as we are for this transformative era for Reading Partners.

Thank you for joining us in the pursuit of a worthy mission,
