Covid-19 Granddaughter’s Visit by S.T.
Basic Literacy, 2nd year A Grandmother’s Love
y son and granddaughter came to see us. After not being able to see them for three months, it was a surprise. I had no idea they were coming. It was nice to see them. My granddaughter was always asking me to show her how to cook. On the day I was making fried chicken and candied sweet potatoes, she got out her pen and pad and wrote step by step just what I was doing. She asked, “Grandmother, how much flour, salt, pepper and paprika?” As always, I just put it in the palm of my hand. I said, “A palm of this and a palm of that. You just get the feel after a few times just how much you need.” The next day she walked through breakfast writing each thing I made. It was nice to know she was interested in learning about cooking. We had a great talk about what she would be doing some day. She asked if I would show her how to cook. Next year she will spend a week with me during the summer and I’m going to give her cooking lessons. We will make a lot of things. She asked me to teach her how to bake. I am looking forward to doing this with her. It is always good for young people to spend time with grandparents because we can teach them so much about life. They will experience some of the things we have been through. This will help them when that time comes in their lives. I do hope they will listen.
The Beauty of Winter By Asalia
English Second Language, 4th year All seasons have something special to share with us. When the autumn season goes away, it’s time to say hello to the winter season. Sometimes winter season comes with a beautiful view. Pine trees and mountains are covered with a white, soft mantle, leaving layers of snowflakes around us that are a delight for our eyes. When the night falls and the moonlight reflects on the snow, thousands of crystals appear to create a special magical moment of peace and beautiful reflections.
