Life Changes

GED, 1st year still remember my first couple of years' experiences when I moved to the United States. I was feeling excited, nervous and homesick. It took me a few years to adjust to a country with a completely different language and culture. It was a big change in my life.

At first, I was super excited because it was the first time in my life to fly. When I was a kid, I used to imagine that one day I could fly on a plane and see the clouds from the sky. Finally, my dream came true. Also, I could rejoin my big family on my dad's side and meet my cousins. They were very nice, they took me shopping and to many places. I had a lot of fun experiences in the United States.

After a while, when school started I felt very nervous because I couldn't speak English. I didn't have anybody to translate for me. I didn't understand teachers and other people when they tried to talk to me. Having a language barrier was a big issue. I couldn't communicate with anybody and it was hard. Silly things happened, like during the winter storms the school made announcements on TV and radio that the school was closed, but I didn't understand English. I still walked to school as on a normal day. It freaked me out--I didn't see anybody! I walked 20 minutes to school in the cold winter storm for nothing, then walked back home for another 20 minutes. Another silly thing was going to the grocery store. I didn't know if the items were sold by pounds or each and brought a lot of wrong products home. Sometimes, I bought the products and didn't know how to use them because I couldn't read the instructions!

All of a sudden, I realized how much I missed my home town. I missed my friends and the food so much. At school I didn't have friends or anyone to talk to, and I felt lonely. It took me a long time to get used to the food in the United States. In China we had a flea market in our town, and farmers sold their produce there. Most of the food they sold was fresh, and we liked to buy fresh meat and groceries from them every day. When the ingredients are fresh, foods have better flavors. I love to eat fruits, but most of my favorite fruits are not sold in the United States. My craving was very bad.

Luckily, the people in the United States are very friendly. I started to have friends in school. They liked me to be their classmate, and because I was the only Chinese student in the school, they also wanted to learn about my culture. They helped me a lot in school and taught me English.

So today I know more English and have no more communication issues. My life in the United States is wonderful!

Mother's Day is celebrated all over the world on different days! For example i second Sunday of May, the same as in China. In Belize, Catar, and Singapore 15th.

English Second L 6 to 8 servings Ingredients for cooking meat: 2 pounds of meat 3 garlic cloves 2 gorded peppers 8 black peppers 3 bay leaves 1/2 onion, white or purple ½ teaspoon salt / In sufficient water INSTRUCTIONS TO PREPARE: In a large pot we put enough water We add the meat and all the ingredients And cook until the flesh is soft, we turn off the fire and let it repose in its broth for 10 minutes.

Take out the meat,, crumbled and save Ingredients: 2 tomatoes 1 small lemon 1/2 onion 2 avocados 1 chili of your preference 1 lettuce of your preference 2 radishes cilantro leaves 1/4 cup of oil 2 tablespoon of white vinegar or apple vinegar 1 teaspoon of oregano - ground black pepper to taste 1/2 teaspoons of salt 1/2 cup of cheese of your preference *Chili in vinegar optional

My Story

English Second Language, 1st year This is my story, my name is Maem. I emigrated to the United States from Thailand three weeks ago.

Here I live with my Mother.

Right now I am very homesick, I miss my cats and dogs in Thailand very much.

Fortunately my Mother has some pets and that makes me feel a little better.

I hope my homesickness gets better soon.

Maem: I emigrated to the United States from Thailand three weeks ago.

Language, 1st year Instructions To Prepare: Crumble the meat and cut it into pieces that are comfortable to eat.

In a bowl we make the vinegar, olive oil, salt, oregano and ground black pepper and mix very well, then we put it in the refrigerator, while we prepare the rest.

We disinfect the lettuce and cilantro.

Chop the tomatoes, onion, radishes into small squares and save.

Finely chop the chili along with the cilantro.

Cut the lettuce into thin strips and save.

Once we have all the ingredients ready, we just put them in a large bowl, mix the vinaigrette and put it with all the ingredients and mix well, add the salt and a little ground pepper and oregano.

Let it stand for about 15 minutes for flavors to meld.

Cut the avocado and cheese in squares, and put it aside along with the chili and vinegar.

We accompany it with toast or crackers.

It's ready to eat.

What Mother’s Day Means to Me

Basic Literacy, 1st year other’s Day is a magnificent celebration of my mom. I remember when I was in grade school we used to make my mom Mother’s Day cards and macaroni necklaces. There were a lot of cheesy things that I made for my mom but she loved them anyway. We would always take mom to lunch or do something special. One Mother’s Day I remember, I was just out of school, had moved out of the house and had my first real job. I remember getting my mom a mini yellow rosebush without thorns. She loved that little rosebush so much. I felt so proud picking the right gift. She had that rosebush for many years and even transplanted it when she moved away from Albuquerque. Now I’m married with my own children. We love celebrating Mother’s Day. My kids and I love making the day special by making lunch and dinner for mom. My daughter and I baked a cake for Mother’s Day this year. This year was extra special because we found out we are expecting another baby. Next year, there will be one more kiddo to help us celebrate mom.

We also send Mother’s Day cards to the grandparents with school pictures from that year.

As we continue to iron out some of the wrinkles presented by the pandemic, we celebrate the fact that we’re still open and able to continue offering great service. Of course, none of what we do would be possible without the support of our grantors, community sponsors, tutors, board members - but most of all, our students. Every day that they show up and allow us to help them improve their literacy skills, is another day we can give thanks for being here. To next year and beyond!!!
