Culture Shock By Freshta
English Second Language, 3rd year he United States and its culture were a huge shock for me when I moved here on October 15, 2015. I grew up in Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan: Muslim countries. Because of my background and religion, a lot of things were surprising to me here. Where I lived before, I had never seen people with different backgrounds and skin colors. This was one of the shocks I got when I stepped off the plane in the United State. I was also surprised by the way women dressed. In my country women do not wear clothing that shows skin, and females always cover their hair with scarves. The biggest jolt when I arrived was the language because at first it sounded like Chinese to me, and my inability to understand it depressed me so much that I wanted to pull my hair out. I did not speak any English, I only knew the alphabet. Now I read, write, and speak English, and I am studying at the university. American food was also distressing to me. No spice, No flavor. Do not get me wrong, I love living here, and I am really grateful to be here. I appreciate the opportunities for The Sandia Mountains women here, so different from where I came from. I can go to school, drive, work, and go out at night. I take any classes I want and there are no careers closed to me. My two favorite things about Albuquerque (I can finally spell it!) are the Sandia mountains and the diversity of the population.

y name is Griselda. I am a woman, mother, and grandmother. I have 1 daughter and 2 sons. My husband and I have lived in Albuquerque for 13 years. My family is beautiful. I am happy for my 3 grandchildren, Kaylen and Melanie. They like numbers just like their grandmother, hahaha. The smallest is Mason. He is very naughty and playfull. I have 2 dogs, they are Tyson and Belo, they are also part of the family. I like autumn, it is special to me, because I like the weather. I like to visit my family in Cuba, but I also want to thank God for my family here in Albuquerque. I am very grateful for the opportunity that Reading works gives me to learn English, specially my tutor Karin for dedicating her time to help me. Thank you, thank you very much.
