Jeffrey Ture 1965-2022
It is with sadness that we report the loss of one of the region’s longstanding and most talented interior designers, Jeff Ture. He passed in his sleep at his home in Saratoga Spring at the age of 56. Jeff participated in many Saratoga Showcase of Homes and other such events over the years. He graciously shared with CRB&D his design ideas for his most recent work – Bella Home Builders’ 2021 Showcase home in this Spring issue (page 10). Jeff enjoyed hiking, camping, skiiing and gardening when he wasn’t creating beautiful interiors for his clients. Jeff is survived by his wife of 36 years, Dru; three children and five siblings. A one-of-a-kind talent, Jeff will be sorely missed by his design community and all those who knew him.

Pella’s innovative way to open and close windows Tired of cranking those casement and awning windows to open and close? Did you know that Pella Corporation developed the Easy-Slide Operator, creating a better way to open and close those type of windows. This hardware solution allows homeowners to easily slide the Operator up to open and down to close the window for a smoother operation than continuous cranking. The company was the first to introduce the FoldAway style crank for casement and awning windows in 2000 and twenty years later developed this even simpler and more asethetically pleasing way to do it. The hardware’s simple operation, minimal design and durability were the result of more than two years of design development. The Easy-Slide Operator is available on Pella Impervia casement and awning windows and other product lines. A custom home built to suit a couple’s lifestyle for entertaining family and friends
family who loves to entertain would find this Saratoga home ideal. Built by Bella Home Builders for a couple who definitely do, this 2,972 square foot, 3 bedroom, 3.5 bath home has the perfect flow for guests to enjoy each other’s company. It was featured in the 2021 Saratoga Showcase of Homes. In designing the floor plan Bella took the couple’s design ideas along with their interest in cooking together and partying into account. “The whole house is built around the kitchen and the wine room,” according to Bella President Dave DePaulo. “You can sit on the living room sofas by the fireplace or at the 12-foot long kitchen island or at the dining room table and still feel a part of the party. And there is a beautiful backyard for outdoor entertaining too.” A second kitchen island features a professional range and floating contemporary hood above so the chefs can keep busy and not turn their backs on their guests.

“It’s pretty cool and it just works. It’s definitely a party house and they are great at it,” noted Dave. “They’re great people with lots of friends. They are almost always doing something at the house.” While Bella designed the home, the interior decorating was done by Jeff Ture of Old Brick Furniture with the homeowners – from beginning to end. Jeff, who had worked with the couple on several other homes over the years, was “very involved, beginning a few months into the planning process before breaking ground.” The design process started with one picture of a kitchen the wife loved – “white cabinets, white counters with touches of black and gold with simple lines, contemporary and glamorous.” Working with Bella’s draftsman Jeff reworked the kitchen walls and changed the layout in the main bath and laundry room. He also added the custom glass wine display, moved some of the window layout and added double-wide sliding doors to the master bedroom.

The homeowners were involved for a lot of the main selections such as cabinets, appliances, flooring and windows. Having left for their out-of-state residence, they left all the decisions up to Jeff. “I knew their taste and what they wanted for their home. We spoke regularly and they approved all the decisions and purchases that I made.” Jeff said he was hoping to achieve the feel of “Cocktails are at 5:00. I wanted every person that entered the home to feel like they were at an all inclusive luxury resort.” One outstanding feature is the wine room for these wine collectors, complete with a floor-to-ceiling glass viewing wall and door. Dave said: “It’s temperature controlled from the basement where all the mechanicals are — dehumidifers, chillers and refrigeration. … It’s definitely a party house and [the couple] is great at it.” More details about this home and other Bella projects can be found at bellahomebuilders.com.

What are Dave’s favorite things about this home?
The house is laid out perfectly. It’s pretty cool. It just works. I love all the contrasts too. And the bedroom suite is beautiful!
Left: Just off the entertaining space is a private, light-filled master suite with double-wide sliding glass doors that open to a grand master bath with hand-painted metallic wall finish and his and her wallmounted vanities. A floating soaking tub and a floor-to-ceiling tiled master shower round out this spa-like bath. Right, the spectacular custom, temperature-controlled wine room is enclosed with a floor-to-ceiling glass viewing wall and door. Floating iron wall racks with label forward storage stand against floor-to-ceiling white limestone walls. All mechanicals are in the basement: dehumidifers, chillers and refrigeration, hidden away from view.

A builder/architect design collaboration that became a labor of love
arefully designed to maintain the integrity of Saratoga’s Oak Ridge neighborhood and history, this unique home was built as a model. Anthony and Natalie Caruso of Caruso Builders worked in collaboration with A.J. Alvarez of Plan Architecture to achieve that design goal, but with a modern spin and its own individual character. The 3,700 sq. ft., 4 bedroom, 3.5 bath home may look familiar as it was an awardwinning entry in the 2021 Saratoga Showcase of Homes. Since it was built as a spec all the design selections were made before the home was sold. “A family did purchase it before the Showcase and made one minor change to a room off the kitchen that was supposed to be a home office. They changed it to a wine room,” said Natalie Caruso. “As a spec we wanted to make sure that it would be suitable for any type of family – empty nesters or a growing family.” That’s why the builders made space in the floor plan for laundry on the first and second floors, though they did finally put it on the second floor, “which is
14
becoming more and more common these days,” said Natalie. For the interior design Caruso Builders worked with Plan Architecture’s inhouse interior design firm, Plan Interiors. Lead designer Tina Konstas worked with Natalie to create a “cohesive look throughout by bringing in several different design details to make sure it all flowed.” Natalie particularly noted the attention to detail that created a specific style throughout the interior and exterior of the home. “It’s an arch in the trim detail above the tub in the primary bath, powder room and in the dining room. We brought it outside as well to the arch on the front porch, and mirrored in the pavers on the front walkway and driveway.” In keeping with Oak Ridge’s exterior design style of using natural materials on homes there, this home features brick, granite, bluestone and natural wood. A variety of marble is featured throughout the house. For example, lilac marble was selected for the master bath with lilac splashes throughout. “The checkered marble floor in the mudroom

and in the wine room with the two distinct archways above each was really a fun design,” Natalie noted. Another favorite of hers are the black cabinets in the kitchen that contrast with the marble countertops and backsplash. She says: “Because the house is so open and spacious it doesn’t feel dark. It makes the kitchen pop.” There are other notable features in this custom home, such as the floor-to-ceiling lime plaster fireplace in the great room with Imperial Danbury marble surround. Directly across from the fireplace is the range hood made of the same lime plaster. In the beautifully landscaped backyard there is an outdoor kitchen for entertaining. Despite being thrown a number of different obstacles due to COVID with product delays, material and labor shortages, and virtual meetings with the clients. Natalie says: “It was a labor of love and we’re really happy with how it turned out.” More details about this home and other Caruso projects can be found at carusohomebuilders.com.

What are the Caruso’s favorite things about this home?
The arch trim detail throughout the interior and exterior of the home. … All the different natural materials – granite, bluestone and wood. … The lilac marble with splashes of lilac throughout the marble. … The black cabinets in the kitchen. In this gorgeous master bath the Quarter Sawn White Oak cabinetry, custom handcrafted by Zarrillo’s Custom Design Kitchens, contrasts with the lilac marble countertop and matching backsplash. Plumbing fixtures are Brizo and the stylish tub is Signature Hardware. The dIstinctive lighting fixtures are perfect accents. The custom arch seen here and elsewhere in the home frames the tub area. A vaulted ceiling with natural wood beams make a dramatic statement in the master bedroom where Pella Architect Series windows from Crawford allow light to pour in. Tips from the experts
How to use layered lighting When you enter a well-lit room, you feel instantly at home. You may not know exactly why, but it just feels right. Achieving that feeling of comfort is easy when you discover how to use layered lighting. What is layered lighting? Simply put: layered lighting is using different types of light fixtures to make the most of every room’s features. For instance, many dining rooms have a chandelier that may also be dimmable. The next level would be adding a buffet lamp or two on a sideboard to bring the light source closer to the table, and to add an element of style. For even more glamour and ambiance, place wall sconces along one or more walls. These accent lights can be used alone or in combination, depending on the occasion. Enhance your living room with a chandelier or flush mount aided by spot lighting in seating areas. Table and floor lamps are the easiest way to add 18

flexible lighting for reading or handwork. Wall sconces are another great addition to the living room or den, especially in recessed areas around built-in bookcases, or in multiples along a long wall. The kitchen is a great place to use layered lighting – from multiple pendants above an island, to LED light strips under cabinet edges, and recessed lighting above the sink or inside open- or glass-fronted shelves. Using layered lighting in the bathroom makes it easier to perform tasks such as shaving, applying make-up, or avoiding middle-of-the-night falls. Talk to the experts at Wolberg Lighting Design & Electrical Supply about new designs in LED bath vanity lights, ceiling lighting and automatic sensor LED lighting. Our homes reflect our ever-changing lifestyles. Make use of layered lighting to give any room a makeover and create that instant feeling of comfort and ease. A cozy retreat with a contemporary and traditional twist
O
n a quiet Saratoga street lies a 3,600 sq. ft., 3 bedroom, 3.5 bath home with a carriage housestyle exterior and a surprising contemporary/traditional interior that builder and owner John Witt of Witt Construction calls “Euro-fresh.” John sees it as a “nationwide and worldwide trend because it has that sense of timelessness, but at the same time it’s new and clean and fresh. I don’t think it’s going to go out of style.” Every inch of space was used in John’s design for this home, including underneath the porches on the lower level. There’s a wine room under the porch and the golf simulator/ yoga room under the large screened porch. The kitchen, dining room and family room flow in an open style. There are two bedrooms upstairs and one on the lower level and 3-1/2 baths total. Examples of blending styles include the large contemporary style sliding doors that open from the dining room to the large screened-in porch and the mixture

of styles in the kitchen. “I used slab door drawer fronts on the bottom cabinets and shaker panels on the top.” And John not only designed the house to create this Euro-fresh style, he selected everything in it, “right down to the furniture.” He does admit getting a little help from daughter Aspen and his staff. The powder room on the main floor is a creative statement. Originally planned with a 10-foot ceiling, John decided to lower it to 8 and create a barrel vault. “We painted

it a charcoal color and silverleaf over that so it would have a soft metallic look. Then we painted the trim a complementary dark charcoal color.” [See the photo opposite.] Discreetly placed on the back roof are solar panels for a 13KW Solar System creating a Net Zero home that is certified green. There is an amazing backyard patio area. “It’s a small city lot, so it’s designed to be maintenance free, no lawn to care for. The whole backyard is patio, gardens and a couple of fire pits,” John said. Judging by the positive response John noted from visitors to this awardwinning entry in the 2021 Saratoga Showcase of Homes he believes “people are looking for something cozy, especially coming through COVID, a place they can enjoy and not have to leave the house.” More details about this home and other Witt projects can be found at wittconstruction.com.
