Leading and Managing your Organisation and Service

Welcome from the Module Lead Dr Mary E. Collins, Chartered Psychologist, RCSI Centre for Positive Health Sciences

The aim of this micro-credential is to equip you with the leadership, strategic, financial and people-management capabilities required to lead a clinical department or service effectively, and to support you in applying those capabilities directly to the organisational realities of your own working environment.

Module objectives By the end of this module, you will be able to: • Develop an understanding of different leadership frameworks and approaches • Critically debate strategy and develop competence in a number of strategic tools for use in your department • Critically debate organisational culture and structures within your working environment • Develop competency in financial management for your department • Explore performance management as a fundamental part of human resource management • Critically apply the key lessons taken from the selected case study to your own departmental area

Why this matters for Medical and Surgical Leaders Medical and Surgical training builds extraordinary technical mastery, clinical judgement and composure under pressure. What it rarely builds — because there has been no structured space for it — is fluency in budgets, business cases, organisational culture, performance conversations and the strategic positioning of a service. Yet these are precisely the demands placed on surgeons the moment they take on responsibility for a department, a theatre list, a training programme or a service redesign. PAGE 2

The consequences of that gap are not abstract. Departmental culture shapes psychological safety, and psychological safety shapes whether concerns are raised, errors are surfaced and teams learn. Financial literacy determines whether a service can make the case for the resources it needs. Performance management, done well, retains good people; done poorly, it drives them out. Leadership in surgery and medicine is therefore not an adjunct to clinical excellence — it is one of its conditions. This module treats leadership as a set of learnable competencies rather than an innate disposition. You will work with established frameworks, apply strategic and financial tools to your own department, and test your thinking against a case analysis and against the experience of peers facing comparable pressures. The intention throughout is that what you take from this module is immediately usable in the service you lead.
