Student Stories

My Journey to Medicine Although my family initially hesitated about my decision to study medicine, they encouraged me to make sure it was the right path by shadowing doctors. That brought me to my first shadowing day in an obstetrics and gynaecology clinic. A pregnant patient saw how eager (and slightly nervous) I was, smiled, and asked if I wanted to feel her baby kick. The second I placed my hand on her tummy and felt that movement, everything clicked. It was such a real human moment, and I knew right then this was where I belonged. Today, my family are my biggest supporters. And while my study notes may still look like a foreign language to them, I’m deeply grateful they encouraged me to discover my own path into this career. I chose RCSI Bahrain because it allowed me to stay close to my family in Dubai while earning a globally recognised dual degree from Ireland and Bahrain. Since joining the University, I have had the opportunity to serve on the Student Council, volunteer through the STEP programme, and participate in research and conferences, many of which were supported by the University. These experiences have helped me grow both personally and professionally. One of the things I appreciate most is how approachable the professors and staff are. No matter who they are, you can always walk up, ask questions, and have a genuine conversation. My advice to anyone considering a career in healthcare is to explore the profession, gain first-hand experience, and make sure your motivation comes from within. When you know your ‘why’, every challenge becomes an opportunity to grow.

Kareeza Selby Chacko Medicine Student 38

During orientation, a lecturer said, “Nursing is science and art.” At the time, I didn’t fully understand what she meant. Looking back, I realise those words perfectly describe my journey.

Kareeza Selby Chacko I chose nursing becauseStudent I wanted a career where I could make a real difference in people’s lives. It comMedicine

bines scientific knowledge with compassion and human connection, challenging me while allowing me to support people through important moments in their lives. Choosing RCSI Bahrain was an easy decision. Its international reputation, strong clinical education, and supportive environment gave me confidence that I would develop into a skilled and compassionate nurse. One of the biggest surprises was how much I grew beyond the lecture halls. Every patient interaction taught me about nursing, empathy, confidence, and the importance of listening. I learned that patients often remember how you made them feel just as much as the care you provide. My experiences as a class representative, health awareness volunteer, and later an executive in clubs and societies also helped me develop as a leader. The challenges, long nights of studying, and clinical placements pushed me outside my comfort zone, strengthened my resilience, and built my confidence. If you have a passion for helping others and a commitment to continuous learning, nursing is an incredibly rewarding path. What began as a desire to care for patients has grown into a passion for leadership, community engagement, and empowering others. RCSI Bahrain has given me the knowledge, confidence, and experiences to grow not only as a healthcare professional, but as a leader who can make a positive difference.

From Student To Surgeon An alumni story Long before I wore a white coat, my parents taught me to dream big, remain humble, and always give my best. Their belief in education and their hope that I would become a doctor gradually became my own ambition, guiding me towards a profession built on compassion, trust, and lifelong learning. Every achievement has been shaped by their unwavering support, encouragement, and sacrifices. Medicine appealed to me because it combines science with humanity and offers the privilege of supporting people during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. Over time, I have learned that success is not measured by titles, but by the lives we touch and the difference we make. A patient’s smile, a heartfelt “thank you,” or a prayer of gratitude continues to remind me why I chose this profession. Growing up in Bahrain taught me that dedication and perseverance can make any ambition possible. Receiving a government scholarship and participating in the Crown Prince’s International Scholarship Program (CPISP) and Leadership Program broadened my horizons, strengthened my leadership skills, and inspired me to pursue excellence. Choosing RCSI Bahrain was a defining decision, allowing me to remain close to my family while receiving a world-class medical education shaped by mentorship, friendship, and support. Although I initially envisioned a career in transplant surgery, my clinical training introduced me to Ear, Nose and Throat surgery, where I discovered a passion for helping patients regain hearing, balance, communication, and confidence. Today, as a Consultant ENT Surgeon specialising in Otology, Neurotology, and Balance Disorders, I continue to pursue excellence while striving to make a meaningful difference in my patients’ lives.

“ I have learned that success is not

measured by titles, but by the lives we touch and the difference we make.”

40

Dr Sayed Mohamed Almoosawi Consultant ENT Surgeon

My journey is one of family, opportunity, mentorship, and perseverance. I hope it inspires others to believe in themselves, embrace opportunities to learn, and pursue their ambitions with confidence and humility.
