Developing Infectious Diseases Capacity in the Kingdom of Bahrain Professor Manaf Alqahtani, Clinical Professor and Head of Microbiology at RCSI Medical University of Bahrain and Senior Consultant in Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiologist, Head of Infectious Diseases and Infection Control departments at the Royal Medical Services (RMS), is leading efforts to strengthen the Kingdom of Bahrain’s infectious diseases preparedness and expertise. Professor Alqahtani has played a central role in shaping the national strategies for antimicrobial stewardship, cross-hospital infection surveillance systems, outbreak readiness, and vaccine deployment in Bahrain. His long-standing vision has been to cultivate a locally rooted, culturally attuned workforce capable of leading from within. A significant milestone was achieved in December 2024 with the launch of Bahrain’s first National Fellowship in Infectious Diseases, accredited by the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties. The formal institutionalisation of subspecialty training in this critical field ensures a sustainable pipeline of highly trained specialists, who can contribute to community health security, from tackling antimicrobial resistance to pandemic preparedness. To date, five RCSI Medical University of Bahrain medical graduates have joined the Fellowship programme. As Bahrain joined 124 countries in signing the WHO’s Pandemic Agreement earlier this year, Professor Alqahtani’s leadership ensures the Kingdom of Bahrain is positioned to respond decisively and independently to future global health challenges.
Professor Manaf Alqahtani is a graduate of RCSI in Dublin (Class of 1999), who completed specialist training in Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology at the University of Toronto. He serves as a key advisor to the WHO, Gulf Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (Gulf CDC), and national health agencies, contributing to regional policy development, training, and coordinated response systems.

Professor Manaf Alqahtani Clinical Professor and Head of Microbiology at RCSI Medical University of Bahrain and Senior Consultant in Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiologist, Head of Infectious Diseases and Infection Control departments at the Royal Medical Services (RMS).
Alumni Testimonial Dr Diaa Hamdi Shosha (Class of 2012) started his residency in 2014 in Riyadh, at the Prince Sultan Military Medical City, followed by a Fellowship in Infectious Diseases in 2019 under a combined programme among several Saudi hospitals including King Khalid University Hospital, King Faisal Specialty Hospital & Research Centre and Prince Sultan Military Medical City. Dr Shosha explains that he was drawn to Infectious Diseases because it constantly challenges him to think critically and solve complex medical cases. It’s a field that directly impacts both individual lives and public health, especially through tackling antibiotic resistance. I also find it deeply rewarding to care for patients during some of their most vulnerable moments. He aims to strengthen Infectious Diseases management in Bahrain by promoting evidence-based practices and antimicrobial stewardship to combat resistance. He also plans to support public health initiatives through education, early detection strategies, and outbreak preparedness. By collaborating with local and regional healthcare teams, he hopes to enhance health security across the GCC. Dr Shosha is grateful to his mentors, Professor James Finucane, former Professor and Head of Department of Medicine, Professor Sameer Otoom, and Professor Manaf Alqahtani, whose guidance and inspiration have profoundly shaped my growth in the field. Part 2: Academic and Clinical Teaching Updates Undergraduate Medicine Curriculum Roll-Out Update The academic year 2024–25 saw steady progress in the implementation of the RCSI Transforming Healthcare Education Programme (THEP) across the early years of the undergraduate medical programme at the University. THEP remains a key component in delivering the University’s mission to graduate skilled, adaptable doctors ready for the future of healthcare. In Years 1 and 2, the preclinical curriculum has continued to evolve to ensure it remains responsive to learner needs and is aligned with current developments in the medical sciences. Year 3 marks a pivotal milestone in the medical curriculum, as students transition from primarily classroombased learning to immersive clinical education. This year heralds the beginning of real clinical placements, offering students their first substantial exposure to patient care. It is a transformative period where theoretical knowledge is applied in real-world settings, and students begin to truly develop their identity as future doctors. An exciting highlight of Year 3 is the introduction of a new and forward-looking module that exposes students to emerging technologies and cutting-edge advancements in medicine, including artificial intelligence. This module broadens students’ perspectives and equips them with the knowledge and skills needed to engage with the future of healthcare. Additionally, students will embark on their research journey, with dedicated time in the curriculum to plan, conduct, and present research projects. This experience not only enhances their academic and critical thinking skills but also provides an opportunity to produce work that may be submitted for publication. In the second semester, students will begin their clinical rotations, engaging with real patients under the guidance of experienced clinicians. They will apply the foundational knowledge acquired over the previous two and a half years while continuing to build on their procedural, communication, and history-taking skills. These placements provide an integrated experience, reinforcing and complementing earlier learning while fostering practical competence and confidence in clinical settings.

Extensive planning has also gone into preparing for the roll-out of THEP in Year 4 (previously referred to as Senior Cycle 1), starting in the 2025–26 academic year. Weekly planning meetings have taken place throughout the year to ensure readiness across all departments. The academic year will follow the same structure of six 6-week modules. Three modules will focus on Medicine, Surgery, and Family Practice, while the other three will cover Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and Psychiatry. The Professionalism, Personal and Interpersonal Development (PPID) strand will continue throughout the year. The main changes are in assessment, with four progress tests, long cases in Medicine and Surgery, and end-of-rotation OSCEs in the three specialties. The new curriculum will be reviewed in full at the end of the 4th year.
Simulation Teaching Update
Together, these developments across Years 1-4 demonstrate our curriculum’s comprehensive and forward-facing transformation. The THEP roll-out has enhanced integration between science and clinical practice, emphasised research and innovation, and introduced new assessment approaches aligned with global best practices. These efforts directly support the University’s strategic goals of educational excellence, innovation in learning and teaching, and preparing graduates for impactful careers in healthcare.
Medical students were taught to engage with the story of a patient through four visits. At these visits, students practised their communication skills with our simulated participants - specialists trained to portray patients or their family members-, from history-taking to breaking bad news, to post-operative care and a discussion around end-of-life care. The simulated participants provided students with feedback on their performance regarding communication effectiveness and demonstration of empathy from a patient’s perspective.

Simulation Teaching Enhancement Initiatives Several professional development initiatives for staff and simulated patients were taken during this academic year to assist with the delivery of high-quality simulation teaching.
Simulated participants - specialists trained to portray patients or their family members – play a central role in our simulation education, where they learn to develop their communication and examination skills. A training day for simulated participants is organised yearly to provide training on delivering and improving clinical scenarios. During their visit, Professor Claire Condron, Director of Simulation at RCSI SIM Centre for Simulation Education and Research in Dublin, and Dr Claire Mulhall, Lecturer in Simulation at the RCSI SIM Centre, ran a workshop coordinated by Ms Gina Singh, Simulated Patient Unit Coordinator, to train our simulated participants in delivering feedback to students. The simulated participants were taught to identify and provide feedback on the students’ communication as felt by “patients”. To simulate various injuries and diseases in medical simulation, moulage is a technique used to raise the realism of the simulation education. In December, staff members of the Ibn Al-Baitar Centre for Simulation and Experiential Learning and selected academics were trained by Ms Samah AlMadani, a simulation technologist at Princess Noora Bint Abdulrahman University and board member of the Saudi Simulation Society in Healthcare, in the use of wax, silicone and 3D printing to create a variety of clinical conditions. Participants gained hands-on experience to create realistic training aids and objects. The creation of wounds or bruises on simulated participants or simulation task trainers provides a realistic picture for students to engage with and prepares them for clinical training in a hospital setting.
In October, the Ibn Al-Baitar Centre for Simulation and Experiential Learning staff, with the collaboration of Professor Claire Condron, Director of Simulation at RCSI SIM Centre for Simulation Education and Research in Dublin, and Dr Claire Mulhall, Lecturer in Simulation at the RCSI SIM Centre, ran a training day for other staff members who teach in the University’s simulation centre. The course discussed learning theories, debriefing skills and their application.

RCSI BAHRAIN ANNUAL REPORT 2024-2025
Part 1: Environmental Stewardship At RCSI Medical University of Bahrain, our commitment to environmental sustainability is embedded within our Green Campus initiative, which seeks to foster long-term environmental stewardship while advancing responsible practices across our community. This academic year, we pursued our ongoing efforts with initiatives aimed at safeguarding the environment for future generations and we proudly marked a significant milestone with the launch of a Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) Sewage Treatment Plant on campus.
Green Campus Initiative Launch of Sewage Treatment Plant On February 15th, a new Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) started operation on campus. This advanced, high-capacity facility has been designed to transform wastewater into reusable water, thereby significantly reducing the University’s environmental footprint. The MBR Sewage Treatment Plant is capable of processing up to 150 cubic metres (150,000 litres) per day — equivalent to 55,000 cubic metres annually. The system has been purpose-built to accommodate the anticipated demands of the University’s growth, including the forthcoming New Academic Building, by managing future wastewater requirements sustainably. The treated water is efficiently recycled and repurposed specifically for landscape irrigation, conserving potable water resources and supporting the University’s green campus initiatives. Underscoring RCSI Medical University of Bahrain’s drive to minimise its carbon impact, the new plant operates predominantly on renewable energy from the campus solar farm, as it is fully integrated with the University’s solar-powered electricity grid. This synergy between clean energy and water conservation exemplifies the University’s holistic approach to environmental stewardship. RCSI Medical University of Bahrain continues to place sustainability at the heart of its operational strategy, contributing to a greener future in line with Bahrain Vision 2030 and the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals, as well as inspiring our students, staff and the wider community to prioritise environmental responsibility. We are proud to deliver innovative solutions that reduce our ecological footprint while supporting the University’s continued growth.

The Solar Farm demonstrating the University’s ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability and energy efficiency
Solar Farm Performance 2025 For the past year, for the period of June 2024 to June 2025, the solar farm generated 74% of the University Campus’ Electricity needs.
Update on New Academic Building Throughout this academic year, the construction progressed steadily with no disruption to academic and clinical teaching or student services. As of the summer of 2025, the substructure works, including the installation of 246 foundation piles and a full raft foundation, have been completed. The superstructure works, including the large steel frame erection of the 1,000sqm Conferring Hall, is ongoing. A significant health and safety milestone was achieved in June when the project surpassed 500,000 safe working hours without a single Lost Time Injury (LTI). This achievement is a testament to the collective commitment of RCSI Bahrain, NASS, AECOM, and all site partners to maintaining the highest safety standards within a live academic environment. Looking ahead, the construction remains on schedule for the new academic building to open for the 2025–26 academic year. From an environmental perspective, the new academic building is aligned with Bahrain’s building sustainability standards, with selected superior energy-efficient features such as thick layers of sustainably produced insulation for enhanced thermal and acoustic performance, double-glazed windows, and sun shading devices have been incorporated to optimise energy consumption.
page 90
The project also integrates energy-efficient technologies, which includes high-efficiency Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems designed to minimise environmental impact, in addition to LED lighting complemented by natural daylight and controlled by occupancy sensors. The building’s advanced chillers and air-handling units, which are equipped with Variable Frequency Drives (VFD) to optimise power consumption, along with insulated ducts and a state-of-the-art Building Management System (BMS) are pivotal in optimising energy consumption. Water conservation efforts are evident in the use of low-flow sanitary fixtures. Landscaping focuses on drought-tolerant native plantings, efficient water use and the creation of social and recreational spaces that mitigate heat island effects and encourage physical activity, with a significant portion of the outdoor area dedicated to green spaces. Thanks to a comprehensive approach and advanced features, we believe that the new Academic building not only achieves operational efficiency and environmental responsibility in line with our Green Campus initiative, but also supports the wellbeing of our students, staff and visitors in line with RCSI’s Vision of “Leading the World to Better Health”.

By the end of academic year 2024-25, women constituted 66% of our full-time personnel, which reflected sustained attention to inclusive recruitment and retention. Additionally, we strengthened our talent pipeline by supporting advanced qualifications and professional recognition with 67% of our female colleagues having pursued Level 9 Master’s or Postgraduate Diploma awards, Level 10 Doctoral or Higher Doctorate awards, or professional memberships and fellowships. We also improved our leadership diversity with women holding 43% of senior academic posts, including Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor, Professor and Head of School positions, which helps us improve our leadership gap. These outcomes were possible thanks to our collective strive toward strengthening academic excellence, enhancing opportunities, and embedding gender equity in how we recruited, developed and recognised our staff members supported by transparent progression practices.
We would like to acknowledge also Ms Pearl Wasif, Research Regulatory Affairs Manager at the University, for being selected one of the Top 12 finalists in the 4th Edition of the prestigious Lamea National Programme. Ms Wasif and her team were recognised for their excellent work in crafting a policy aimed at improving mental health services in Bahrain in collaboration with a diverse range of esteemed organisations, including the Primary Healthcare Centres, Government hospitals, the Ministry of Youth Affairs, the WHO Country Office in Bahrain, and the United Nations Population Fund, by earning third place. Reflecting on her experience, Ms Wasif identified two lessons: first, that cross-sector collaboration is essential to addressing complex societal challenges; and second, that a well-designed health policy can transform population health and wellbeing. Looking forward, she expressed her commitment to advancing initiatives that integrate technology and innovation into public services, and to leading projects with clear social impact and a focus on community development.
