Congratulations to the Class of 2025!

The Conferring Ceremony, celebrated the academic achievements of 142 medical graduates and 130 graduates from the undergraduate and postgraduate nursing programmes. The ceremony honored exceptional academic accomplishments from the School of Medicine: •

Dr Ola Gamil Mohammed received the Medicine Overall Gold Medal, the Senior Cycle Bronze Medal, the Professor James Finucane Prize in Medicine, and the Professor Niall O’Higgins Prize in Surgery.

Dr Zain Mohammed AlMuqbel received the Degree Award Gold Medal, Senior Cycle Silver Medal, and the Professor Joe McMenamin Prize in Paediatrics.

Dr Khadija Sayed AlToblani received the Professor Charlotte Kamel Prize in Psychiatry.

Dr Maher Ali AlQattan received the Professor John Murphy Prize in Obstetrics & Gynaecology.

President’s Update

Crown Prince’s Court President Receives University President

His Excellency Shaikh Salman bin Ahmed bin Salman Al Khalifa, the President of the Court of the Crown Prince, received a delegation from RCSI Medical University of Bahrain led by Professor Sameer Otoom, President of the University.

A copy of the University’s 20th Anniversary commemorative book dedicated to His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, was received by His Excellency.

His Excellency commended RCSI Bahrain’s pivotal role in strengthening higher education, noting the University’s contributions in providing the health sector with a highly qualified medical workforce, which enhances the Kingdom’s ability to meet its needs and achieve its long-term aspirations.

His Excellency also expressed his wishes for RCSI Medical University of Bahrain to continue developing medical education and training to consolidate the Kingdom of Bahrain’s position in the medical field.

Bahrainouna Exhibition Inauguration On 4th of May, Professor Sameer Otoom, President of RCSI Medical University of Bahrain, attended the inauguration ceremony of the “Bahrainouna” Exhibition in the presence of His Excellency Dr Mohamed bin Mubarak Juma, Minister of Education and a member of the Ministerial Committee for the Follow-up on the National Plan to Promote the Spirit of Belonging to the Nation and Reinforce the Values of Nationalism (“Bahrainouna”).

During the ceremony, His Excellency Dr Mohamed bin Mubarak Juma presented Professor Otoom with an award in recognition of the University’s efforts and contribution to the initiatives of the “Bahrainouna” national plan, which are aimed at fostering a strong sense of national belonging and reinforcing the values of citizenship.

The University is honoured to have received this award as a testament to our commitment to contributing positively to our community and supporting Bahrain’s national values.

Brigadier (Professor) Fahad Khalifa Al Khalifa Recognised

A highly experienced surgeon, Brigadier Al Khalifa specialises in sports and complex trauma, upper and lower extremity surgery, joint arthroplasty, degenerative joint diseases and deformity correction.

In June 2024, His Excellency was conferred with a Fellowship Ad Eundem from RCSI. This prestigious honour recognises His Excellency's significant contributions in the field of Orthopaedic surgery, his dedication to education as a Clinical Professor at the University and his long-standing dedication to advancing healthcare services in the Kingdom of Bahrain throughout his career.

Notably, under his leadership, the BDF-RMS achieved a groundbreaking milestone in November with the successful completion of a TMJ replacement surgery a first for the Middle East and one of only eight performed worldwide.

RCSI Medical University of Bahrain marked a significant institutional milestone with the University’s outstanding result in the recent Institutional Review by the Bahrain Quality Assurance (BQA), where RCSI Bahrain achieved full compliance with the General Framework Standards. Professor Deborah McNamara, President of RCSI, alongside Professor Sameer Otoom, President of RCSI Bahrain, were honoured to welcome on campus Her Excellency Dr Maryam Mustafa, Chief Executive of BQA, Her Excellency Dr Diana Abdulkareem Al Jahrami, Secretary General of the Higher Education Council and Deputy Chairperson of the Higher Education Council Board of Trustees, and delegates along with members of the Senior Management Team, to obtain the certification. The recognition reflects the University’s unwavering commitment to academic excellence, quality assurance and continuous improvement across all facets of its operations. RCSI Medical University of Bahrain extends its sincere thanks to the University’s dedicated Quality Enhancement Office, and all stakeholders who contributed to this successful review.

A celebration breakfast was held on 10 April at the Rotana Arjaan with all staff members. This event also served to honour the outstanding individual achievements of several faculty members. Professor Charlotte Kamel, Dr Eman Tawash, Professor Ghufran Jassim, Professor Edwina Brennan, Dr Khadija Matrook, Dr Sara Sulaiman, Ms Marwa Alnajjar, Ms Shooq Al Tamimi and Dr Anthony Friel were recognised for attaining the prestigious SeniorFellowship (SFHEA) from Advance HE. Their achievement reflects a sustained dedication to high standards in teaching, learning and the student experience, underpinned by areflective and research-informed practice.

The morning served not only as a celebration, but also as an opportunity to acknowledge the collective efforts of staff whose dedication and professionalism continue to uphold RCSI Bahrain’s position as a regional leader in health sciences education.

This complex procedure restored natural jaw function for a young patient who had experienced breathing difficulties and jaw misalignment resulting from a childhood injury.

RCSI Medical University of Bahrain Bahrain Council for Health and Isa bin Salman Charitable Trust Studies and Specialties Forge Collaborative Partnership Receives Institutional Accreditation from the Arab Board for Health Specialisations

Medical university presidents in Bahrain applauded the Bahrain Council for Health Studies and Specialties' (BCHSS) recent institutional accreditation from the Arab Board for Health Specializations.

They asserted that this reflects His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa’s vision and His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa’s directives to bolster the health sector, particularly in education and vocational training.

This achievement, they added, cements Bahrain’s status as a regional leader in medical specialisations and health professional development, ensuring compliance with regional medical education standards and opening doors for doctors to sit Arab Board examinations.

RCSI Medical University of Bahrain and the Isa bin Salman Charitable Trust held discussions to establish a collaborative partnership.

By aligning the academic expertise of RCSI Medical University of Bahrain with the philanthropic vision of the Isa bin Salman Charitable Trust, this collaboration aimed to provide aspiring students with opportunities to achieve their academic and professional aspirations and nurture the next generation of healthcare professionals who will contribute to Bahrain’s healthcare sector.

Commenting on the meeting outcome, Her Excellency Ms Mashael AlQutami, Acting Secretary General of Isa Bin Salman Charitable Trust, stated: “The discussion with RCSI Medical University of Bahrain reflects both organisations’ shared commitment to fostering an initiative that addresses the empowerment of students with their career aspirations, the societal advancement of Bahraini youth and the healthcare advancement of the Kingdom of Bahrain in line with the national vision”.

Professor Sameer Otoom, President of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) - Medical University of Bahrain, highlighted the ongoing support for Bahrain’s medical education system, positioning the nation as a leading regional and international healthcare hub. He stated: “This is a national achievement that reflects Bahrain’s commitment to improving the quality of specialised medical education and training in accordance with the highest regional and international standards”.

Acknowledging this comment, Professor Sameer Otoom, President of RCSI Medical University of Bahrain, stated: “Through our collaborative partnership, RCSI Medical University of Bahrain and the Isa bin Salman Charitable Trust intend to promote an inclusive approach to education and healthcare. We look forward to supporting more Bahraini students in fulfilling their potential while contributing to the sustainable development of healthcare in the Kingdom of Bahrain”.

Professor Otoom added that this accreditation bolsters the credibility of the Council’s training programmes, improving the efficiency of trainee doctors and enhancing the international recognition of their certifications.

Since 2013, seven Bahraini doctors, among whom was the 2024 Intern Award winner, and ten Bahraini medical students, of whom three were awarded in the President’s Honours List, have been educated at RCSI Medical University of Bahrain with the support of the Isa bin Salman Charitable Trust.

Since the establishment of the School of Nursing and Midwifery in 2006, RCSI Medical University of Bahrain had graduated a total of 1,452 nurses with an employment rate of 92% as of June 2024.

Deepening Educational Collaboration with MOHE Kuwait In a significant step toward expanding regional academic collaboration, Professor Sameer Otoom, President of RCSI Medical University of Bahrain, alongside Mr Fadi Ghosn, Head of Recognition Careers & Alumni, visited Her Excellency Ms Lamia AlMelhem, Undersecretary at the Kuwait Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE), at her office in Kuwait.

The visit focused on strengthening existing ties and exploring opportunities to further support the educational and healthcare workforce goals of the State of Kuwait.

Her Excellency conveyed the Ministry’s interest in expanding the relationship with RCSI Medical University of Bahrain.

A key highlight of the discussion was the Ministry’s interest in RCSI Bahrain’s Nursing and Midwifery programmes.

Her Excellency welcomed the prospect of collaboration in this area, recognising the importance of these fields in meeting future healthcare needs. Professor Sameer Otoom expressed his appreciation for the Ministry’s trust in the University as a strategic academic partner and reaffirmed RCSI Medical University of Bahrain’s commitment to contributing to Kuwait’s national development priorities through high-quality health sciences education.

This visit marked an important milestone in the ongoing collaboration between RCSI Medical University of Bahrain and regional education authorities, reinforcing the University’s role as a hub for medical and healthcare education in the GCC.

Collaboration with Oman’s Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation

RCSI Bahrain formalised a significant cooperation agreement in higher education and scholarships with the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation in Oman. This landmark partnership, signed by Professor Sameer Otoom, President of RCSI Bahrain, and Her Excellency Professor Rahma Ibrahim Al Mahrouqi, the Omani Minister of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, represented the culmination of many years of dedicated work and fruitful collaboration between the University and the Ministry.

Under the new agreement, the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation in Oman will sponsor a select number of students for the Medical Commencement Programme (MCP) or the Undergraduate Medicine Programme. This agreement is a pivotal step that will empower the next generation of medical leaders and reinforce the University’s commitment to enhancing healthcare education in the region. Professor Otoom and Mr Fadi Ghosn, Head of Recognition Careers and Alumni, also met with the His Excellency Ambassador of Oman in Bahrain on 4 June for an update on the signed agreement, further solidifying the strong ties and shared vision for a brighter future in medical education across the Gulf region.

Kuwait National Day On the occasion of Kuwaiti National Day, observed on February 25, 2025, His Excellency Shaikh Thamer Al-Jaber AlAhmad Al-Sabah, the Ambassador of the State of Kuwait to the Kingdom of Bahrain, hosted a distinguished reception at his residence. The event was attended by Professor Sameer Otoom, President of RCSI Medical University of Bahrain, and Professor Alfred Nicholson, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Head of the School of Medicine. RCSI Medical University of Bahrain maintains a strong and collaborative relationship with the Ministry of Higher Education in Kuwait, with Kuwaiti students enrolled yearly in the undergraduate medicine programme.

U.S. Ambassador Highlights Collaborations RCSI Medical University of Bahrain welcomed His Excellency Steven C Bondy, U.S. Ambassador to the Kingdom of Bahrain, and a delegation to its campus in Busaiteen on May 19. The delegation included Mr Nathanael Lynn, Chief of the Public Affairs Section; Ms Samar Hasan, Education Specialist; and Dr Fathima Nasmy, Physician.

A key focus of the meeting was the University’s robust academic and clinical collaborations with leading US universities and hospitals.

Mr Fadi Ghosn, Head of Recognition Careers and Alumni, provided details on student research and clinical electives through such partnerships with prestigious institutions such as Johns Hopkins University, Yale University, the University of Alabama at Birmingham, the University of Tennessee Health Science Centre, Penn State College of Medicine and George Washington University.

As a result of this collaboration, 224 graduates of RCSI Medical University of Bahrain, including 117 American citizens, are now practising in the United States, a testament to the University's rigorous international standards and world-class training it provides.

During the meeting, the delegation also explored potential federal funding opportunities for American nationals to study at RCSI Bahrain, further expanding the collaboration between the University and U.S. institutions and demonstrating a shared commitment to advancing medical education and research.

American Mission Hospital Board of Directors’ Delegation Visit On April 28, RCSI Medical University of Bahrain welcomed a delegation from the American Mission Hospital Board of Directors, led by Mr Dan Thomas Walters, Chairman, alongside Dr George Cheriyan, Corporate Chief Executive Officer and Chief Medical Officer of American Mission Hospital.

Hosted by Professor Sameer Otoom, President of RCSI Medical University of Bahrain, discussions highlighted the longstanding and collaborative partnership, including medical and nursing student placements, joint community engagement initiatives and potential research collaborations with the Mayo Clinic, supported by the Hospital Board of Directors. It was also noted that the recent internship programme with King Hamad American Mission Hospital (KHAMH) and government hospitals, coordinated

by Professor Ghufran Jassim, Head of Department and Associate Professor of Family Medicine, has gained international recognition and increasing interest due to its benchmarking against the Irish Medical Council’s

competencies and the UK General Medical Council requirements.

Professor Otoom highlighted the strong collaboration with American Mission Hospital and the Hospital Board's support, expressing eagerness to enhance joint initiatives in education, research, and community service for the benefit of the Kingdom of Bahrain. Mr Walters also expressed the Board's appreciation for the ongoing collaboration and reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the shared missions of both institutions.

MoU Signing with Leading Indian Medical College RCSI Bahrain formalised a partnership with Christian Medical College (CMC) Vellore, one of India’s most prominent medical and nursing colleges, during a visit in February. Representing the University, Professor Alfred Nicholson, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Head of School of Medicine, accompanied by Professor Kathryn Strachan, Head of School of Nursing and Midwifery, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Dr Vikram Mathews, Director of CMC Vellore.

The MoU establishes a framework for collaborative initiatives, including a medical and nursing student exchange programme, research collaboration and the promotion of academic cooperation. The MoU was signed during a high-level visit to CMC Vellore by a distinguished delegation from the Kingdom of Bahrain. The delegation was led by Dr Deepak Abraham, Chief of Medical Staff at American Mission Hospital, alongside Dr JV Peter, Medical Consultant at American Mission Hospital; Dr Azhar Ali Naseeb, Chief of Clinical Trial and CPD Regulation at the National Health Regulatory Authority (NHRA); Professor Riyadh Hamzah, President of the Royal University for Women; and Dr Raed Alnimer, Dean of the Royal University for Women.

Alumna Dr Dhabya Al-Sada Wins Lamea’s Fourth Edition RCSI Bahrain extended its sincere congratulations to alumna Dr Dhabya Al-Sada, Class of 2012, Family Physician at Primary Healthcare Centers, for winning the fourth edition of the Lamea national programme. This achievement was under the patronage of His Highness Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Representative of His Majesty the King for Humanitarian Works and Youth Affairs and Chairman of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports.

His Excellency Lieutenant General Doctor Sheikh Mohamed Bin Abdullah Al-Khalifa, Chairman of the Supreme Council of Health, in the presence of Dr Ijlal Faisal Al Alawi, Chief Executive of the Primary Healthcare Centres, received Dr Al-Sada in recognition of her remarkable achievement.

Collaborative Future with Arabian Gulf University

President’s Update

RCSI Medical University of Bahrain and the Arabian Gulf University (AGU) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to increase collaboration in medical education, scientific research and training initiatives that support the healthcare sector in Bahrain and the region.

Signed by Professor Sameer Otoom, President of RCSI Bahrain, and His Excellency Dr Saad bin Saud Al Fuhaid, President of AGU, the agreement provides a framework for joint research projects, academic exchange, shared conferences and workshops, and the co-supervision of research papers.

The MoU also establishes an annual joint research fund of BHD 20,000 and outlines plans for a unified research database.

A joint steering committee which includes senior academic leaders from both institutions will oversee implementation.

Both parties expressed their commitment to advancing research excellence and positioning Bahrain as a regional hub for clinical and academic collaboration.

Turkish Ambassador Visits Campus On April 7, RCSI Medical University of Bahrain had the honour of hosting Her Excellency Dr Ayşe Hilal Sayan Koytak, Ambassador of the Republic of Türkiye to the Kingdom of Bahrain, along with Mr Abdulkadir Yaman and Ms Duygu Yagci, Third Secretaries from the Turkish Embassy. The visit began with introductions, during which the Ambassador shared insights into her distinguished diplomatic career.

This was followed by a presentation from Mr Stephen HarrisonMirfield, Managing Director, which showcased RCSI Medical University of Bahrain’s impressive growth within the Kingdom since its inception in 2004. Professor Stephen Atkin, Head of the School of Postgraduate Studies and Research, discussed the University’s ongoing oncology research and the potential for collaborative opportunities with hospitals and universities in Türkiye, with a focus on the importance of creating avenues for student research and overseas elective opportunities.

Professor Sameer Otoom, President of RCSI Bahrain, emphasised the longstanding and positive relationship between Türkiye and Bahrain, reaffirming the University’s commitment to strengthening these academic ties. Her Excellency expressed her full support for any collaboration efforts and highlighted the opportunity for Turkish students to gain valuable international experience while studying in Bahrain. The visit served as a valuable platform to explore future collaborations and further strengthen educational links between RCSI Bahrain and the Republic of Türkiye.

Sultan Qaboos University Delegation Visit On February 26, a delegation from Sultan Qaboos University’s College of Medicine and Health Sciences visited RCSI Medical University of Bahrain. The delegation included His Excellency Professor Rashid Al Abri, Dean of College of Medicine and Health Sciences, and Professor Musbah Tanira, Professor Emeritus.

The visit commenced with a meeting between the delegation and Professor Sameer Otoom, President of RCSI Medical University of Bahrain, alongside Professor Alfred Nicholson, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Head of School of Medicine, and Mr Fadi Ghosn, Head of Recognition Careers and Alumni. This was followed by a presentation on the University by Professor Nicholson, providing an overview of its academic programmes, facilities and student life. Discussions focused on potential collaborations, particularly in the areas of student exchange and research partnerships. The visitors were given a guided tour of the University campus, including a view of the New Academic Building under construction, showcasing RCSI Medical University of Bahrain’s ongoing development.

Engaging with Pakistan Ambassador and CPSP Delegation

On April 8, Professor Sameer Otoom, President of RCSI Medical University of Bahrain; alongside members of senior management, heads of departments and faculty, welcomed His Excellency Mr Saqib Rauf, Ambassador of Pakistan to Bahrain, and Professor Muhammad Shoaib Shafi, President of the College of Physicians & Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP) and delegation.

The meeting facilitated discussions on strategic collaborations in postgraduate medical education and explored certification pathways. Key discussion topics included joint research opportunities, collaboration with King Edward Medical University and Aga Khan University, and elective opportunities for medical students. Additionally, the meeting highlighted the strong academic ties between Pakistan and Bahrain, noting the enrolment of 44 Pakistani medical students and 40 graduates from RCSI Bahrain. Presentations by both RCSI Medical University of Bahrain and CPSP representatives fostered a productive exchange of ideas, laying the foundation for future strategic cooperation and mutual growth in medical education, with a focus on enhancing opportunities for students.

Exploring Strategic Academic Partnership with Strathclyde University Bahrain As a step towards expanding its academic network, on April 22 an executive delegation from RCSI Medical University of Bahrain visited Strathclyde University Bahrain to explore strategic opportunities for partnership.

Professor Sameer Otoom, President of RCSI Medical University of Bahrain, and the executive delegation were received by Professor Sir Jim McDonald, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Strathclyde, and Professor Ibrahim Khadra, Vice President of Strathclyde University Bahrain. The meeting served as a platform for discussions around collaboration in higher education.

Discussions focused on identifying synergies in research, innovation and education, with a joint ambition to foster enriching experiences of benefit to staff and students. Exploring Community Engagement Collaboration with Bahrain Trust Foundation

On April 30, RCSI Medical University of Bahrain welcomed a delegation from the Bahrain Trust Foundation, led by Her Excellency Dr Fatima Al Balooshi, Chairman, and Dr Faten Al Moayyed, Vice President, to explore potential collaborations in Community Engagement initiatives.

The meeting commenced with opening remarks by Professor Sameer Otoom, President of RCSI Medical University of Bahrain, followed by an overview of the University presented by Mr Gary Brady, Head of Human Resources. Ms Amna Al-Muhandes, Community Outreach Team Lead, presented on Community Outreach initiatives in Bahrain and abroad, and Mr Fadi Ghosn, Head of Recognition Careers & Alumni, provided an update on the University’s alumni community. Discussions, involving Professor Sameer Otoom, President of RCSI Medical University of Bahrain, Professor Alfred Nicholson, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Head of School of Medicine, and Professor Kathryn Strachan, Head of School of Nursing & Midwifery and Community Engagement Pillar Lead, focused on potential joint initiatives in student volunteering, health awareness programmes including women's wellbeing programmes with the involvement of Professor Ghufran Jassim, Head of Department and Associate Professor of Family Medicine, and potential collaboration on International Community Engagement trips with Operation Child Life (OCL).

The meeting concluded with both parties expressing enthusiasm about the potential impact of this partnership and agreeing to develop a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to formalise the areas of collaboration between RCSI Medical University of Bahrain and Bahrain Trust Foundation.

President Attends Bahrain Anaesthesia and Pain Management Conference On April 17, Professor Sameer Otoom, President of RCSI Medical University of Bahrain, attended the Bahrain Anaesthesia and Pain Management Conference, held under the patronage of His Excellency Lieutenant General Doctor Shaikh Mohammed bin Abdulla Al Khalifa, Chairman of the Supreme Council of Health. The two-day national conference, organised by the Government Hospitals in collaboration with Education Plus, provided a key platform for specialists in anaesthesia and pain management to share insights and explore recent advancements in their fields.

The event underscored the importance of ongoing collaboration and knowledge exchange within Bahrain’s healthcare sector. Also in attendance were His Excellency Shaikh Hesham bin Abdulaziz Al Khalifa, Chairman of the Government Hospitals Board of Trustees; Her Excellency Dr Jaleela bint AlSayed Jawad Hassan, Minister of Health; and Her Excellency Dr Mariam Athbi Al Jalahma, Chief Executive of the Government Hospitals, along with other senior officials and healthcare professionals.

Bahrain Diabetes Society Presents New Publication

On April 28, Professor Sameer Otoom, President of RCSI Medical University of Bahrain, welcomed Dr Maryam Al Hajeri, Vice President of the Bahrain Diabetes Society, and Professor Dalal Al Rumaihi from the Bahrain Diabetes Society to present their recently published book, Women and Diabetes: Towards Better Health During Pregnancy.

Professor Sameer Otoom, President of RCSI Medical University of Bahrain, formally welcomed Dr Ameen Al Saati, a distinguished Senior Consultant ENT Surgeon, to the university campus.

President Professor Sameer Otoom Honoured RCSI Medical University of Bahrain extended sincere congratulations to Professor Sameer Otoom, President of RCSI Medical University of Bahrain, for being awarded the prestigious Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians of London.

The Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians of London (RCP) is an accolade held by some of the most distinguished individuals, whose contributions to medicine are recognised to shape the future of healthcare.

This esteemed recognition highlights Professor Otoom’s outstanding contributions to medical and health sciences education, healthcare and institutional leadership. In addition to this latest honour, Professor Otoom also holds Fellowships from the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland and the Royal Society of Medicine in London, where his name is inscribed on its prestigious Wall of Honour.

Ahlia University Discusses Research and Development His Excellency Professor Abdulla Y Al-Hawaj, the Founding President of Ahlia University, met with Professor Sameer Otoom on May 6 for a general discussion on collaboration in research and professional development activities.

Active Participation in Arab Universities Conference On April 23, Professor Sameer Otoom, President of RCSI Medical University of Bahrain, and Mr Fadi Ghosn, Head of Recognition Careers and Alumni, attended the 57th General Conference of the Association of Arab Universities (AARU) in Kuwait, hosted by the International University of Kuwait.

The two-day conference, focused on "Arab Higher Education in Light of Digital Transformation and Promoting Regional Integration," convened over 250 universities and leading academics from across the Arab region to explore avenues for strengthening academic cooperation and enhancing research and innovation in the region's higher education sector.

Kingdom of Bahrain's Medical Achievement Commended With great pride and honour, RCSI Medical University of Bahrain extended its sincere congratulations to the Kingdom of Bahrain on the historic medical achievement of the Kingdom's successful completion of the world’s first sickle cell disease patient treatment outside the US using CRISPR-based bone marrow transplantation; reflecting its leadership in the field of healthcare.

National Flag of Canada Day National Flag of Canada Day was held on February 2 at the Rashid Al Khalifa Art Foundation.

The event was held by the Canadian Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Oman and Bahrain.

It was attended by Mr Fadi Ghosn, Head of Recognition Careers and Alumni, and Ms Salam ElAkkawi, SC2 student.

Bahrain Tawjihiya Students Excel in Medicine Degree Analysis of students who graduated from RCSI Medical University of Bahrain medicine programme during the last six years identified that the Bahrain Tawjihiya school qualification is a good predictor of the overall degree result.

This analysis confirmed that Bahrain Tawjihiya students with English language proficiency of IELTS ≥ 6.5 are just as likely to achieve honours in the degree as students who enter the medicine programme with A-Level and International Baccalaureate qualifications at RCSI Bahrain.

Longstanding Supporter Mr David Bloomer Celebrated On May 5, Professor Sameer Otoom, President of RCSI Medical University of Bahrain, met with Mr David Bloomer and his wife, Mrs Vanessa Pereira.

Mr Bloomer, a former producer and reporter in Bahrain, has been a longstanding supporter of the University.

Key Role in Family Medicine Conference RCSI Medical University of Bahrain was proud to have partnered with the Bahrain Family Physicians Association in the successful launch of the First International Conference on Family Medicine and Primary Health Care in Bahrain.

The opening ceremony, held from May 29 to 31, marked a significant milestone, setting the tone for an impactful and thought-provoking event that brought together distinguished speakers from around the globe. RCSI Bahrain was honoured to have contributed to both the scientific and organising committees, with representation by Professor Ghufran Jassim, Head of the Department of Family Medicine at the University.

RCSI Medical University of Bahrain was especially proud of the contributions from its faculty, including esteemed speakers from RCSI Bahrain and RCSI Dublin, notably Professor Tom Fahey, Head of the Department of General Practice at RCSI Dublin. Professor Tom Fahey shared his positive experience, stating: "I was fortunate to travel to Bahrain as a speaker at the Bahrain International Conference on Family Medicine and Primary Healthcare. I encountered a vibrant and diverse primary care programme of lectures and workshops.

I also had the opportunity to visit the Halat Bu Maher health centre and was very impressed with the facilities and close working between primary care professionals. My thanks to Prof Ghufran Jassim for hosting me and all her colleagues for their warm and generous welcome".

Professor Sameer Otoom, President of RCSI Bahrain, received sincere gratitude for his unwavering support, and the dedicated faculty and enthusiastic students, whose active involvement was instrumental to the success of the conference, were recognised.

Strengthening International Ties with Thailand His Excellency commended RCSI Bahrain’s continued commitment to Bahrain, drawing symbolic connections between Thai cultural heritage and the ancient Dilmun civilisation. This visit represented a significant step in strengthening the University’s international outlook as it continues to explore global opportunities for academic exchange and electives for the benefit of its students.

Following this, from May 21 to 23, Professor Sameer Otoom, President of RCSI Medical University of Bahrain, along with Professor Martin Corbally, Head of the Department of Surgery, and Mr Fadi Ghosn, Head of Recognition Careers and Alumni, visited the Kingdom of Thailand to explore new international collaboration opportunities.

RCSI Medical University of Bahrain actively strengthened its international ties with the Kingdom of Thailand through two significant engagements in May. On May 13, Professor Sameer Otoom, President of the University, was privileged to host His Excellency Sumate Chulajata, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Thailand to the Kingdom of Bahrain, alongside members of the University’s Executive Committee.

The visit commenced with a welcome presentation delivered

by Mr Gary Brady, Head of Human Resources, followed by a strategic briefing outlining the University’s institutional growth, recent milestones and contribution to healthcare education in the Kingdom. The Ambassador was briefed on plans to formalise a partnership with the Faculty of Medicine Ramathibodi Hospital, Mahidol University in Bangkok for academic exchange as well as clinical and research electives, and discussions with the Bumrungrad International Hospital in Bangkok for clinical rotations and research opportunities.

The visit began with a meeting at Bumrungrad International Hospital in Bangkok with Associate Professor Dr Taveesin Tanprayoon, Chief Medical Officer, and Ms Artirat Charukitpipat, Chief Executive Officer, exploring clinical electives in cardiology and research collaborations.

The delegation also met with Mr Mohamed Abdulla Mahmood Alkooheji, First Secretary at the Embassy of the Kingdom of Bahrain in Thailand, to provide an update on RCSI Bahrain’s ongoing engagements in the region. The visit concluded with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with Ramathibodi Hospital, Mahidol University, enabling the University’s students to undertake clinical and research electives across all specialties at one of Bangkok’s largest teaching hospitals. Further academic cooperation is planned for the upcoming academic year.

This strategic engagement reflects RCSI Bahrain’s continued commitment to advancing global partnerships that benefit students, faculty and the wider academic community.

Higher Education Council Conducts Verification Visit

On 17th of July 2025, the University welcomed for an official verification visit a delegation from the Higher Education Council (HEC) led by Dr Zainab Ali Al Touq, Director of Research and Policy, Ms Thikrayat Ali Amin, Head of Academic Accreditation, Eng Maryam Salem Marzooq, Head of Engineering Design, Ministry of Education, Dr Omar Mostafa, Senior Academic Licensing Specialist and Ms Fatima Atef, Educational Specialist.

The purpose of the visit was to assess the University’s readiness to relaunch the BSc in Nursing (Hons) Bridging Programme and introduce a new Medical Doctorate programme. Discussions covered academic frameworks, regulatory compliance, and programme structure. The visit concluded with a campus tour supported by Mr Omar Bureshaid, Head of Registry Services, and Mr Hameed Mansoor, Estates Operations Manager. From RCSI Medical University of Bahrain, representatives included Dr Maryam Alaradi, Senior Lecturer in Nursing and Director of BSc in Nursing Programme, Ms Sumaya Faraj, Lecturer in Nursing, Dr Mariam Murad, Clinical Research Coordinator, and Ms Pearl Wasif, Research and Regulatory Affairs Manager.

Academic Update

RCSI Bahrain and Think Pink Launch Initiative to Support Education of Bahraini Nurses in Master’s Programme RCSI Medical University of Bahrain and the Bahrain Breast Cancer Society (Think Pink) launched a significant initiative to support the education of Bahraini nurses in a Master’s programme in Nursing.

Think Pink extended its support to two Bahraini nurses, Ms Zahra Mardhi from Mohammed Jassim Kanoo Health Centre and Mr Issa Al Abbadi, a nurse at King Hamad University Hospital and a 2019 alumnus of RCSI Bahrain, by sponsoring their enrolment in the Master’s in Nursing programme at RCSI Bahrain. Both individuals would focus their dissertation research on topics related to breast cancer.

This initiative sought to expand the number of nursing professionals with specialised expertise in breast cancer care, thereby strengthening the Kingdom’s capacity to deliver advanced and comprehensive healthcare services to patients and their families.

The initiative was aligned with RCSI Bahrain’s strategic vision to foster excellence in scientific research and medical education within the Kingdom, demonstrating the University’s commitment to cultivating a progressive academic and research environment that supports the development of national healthcare competencies, with particular emphasis on chronic diseases such as breast cancer.

MSc Nursing New Cohort RCSI Bahrain extended a warm welcome to its new cohort of Master’s in Nursing students, who commenced their academic and professional journey in January.

The cohort comprised 12 students, two of whom attained RCSI scholarship, four were sponsored by the Royal Medical Services and one by Think Pink.

The University expressed heartfelt thanks to Student Recruitment, Admissions, Student Development & Wellbeing, Registry, Library, ICT, Estates, Technical Solutions and Security for their assistance during the orientation day and the teaching week. RCSI Bahrain wished the students all the best and success in their new journey.

Student Co-Leads International Study on Interprofessional Collaboration RCSI Medical University of Bahrain was pleased to highlight the significant achievement of Ms Shahad Abdulkhaleq Mamalchi, a Senior Cycle 2 student, whose Student Selected Project formed the foundation of a recently published international study. Conducted in collaboration with the University of South Dakota, the research explored student interactions during high-pressure clinical simulations, notably revealing a tendency towards groupthink among higher-performing students when conforming to inaccurate group decisions.

This collaborative publication underscored the opportunities within RCSI Bahrain curriculum for students to engage in meaningful research and contribute to global scholarly output. The study, mentored

by Dr Colin Greengrass, Senior Lecturer in Pharmacology & Academic Director of Technology Enhanced Learning, raised important considerations regarding team dynamics and shared decision-making in clinical education.

A follow-up study was underway to examine how additional training in team communication and cognitive awareness might support students in managing group dynamics more effectively. RCSI Bahrain congratulated Ms Mamalchi on this accomplishment and anticipated further developments from this important line of inquiry.

Appointment of Professor Husain Nasaif as Director of the MSc in Nursing Programme At the beginning of the semester, RCSI Bahrain announced the appointment of Professor Husain Nasaif, Associate Professor in Nursing, as Director of the MSc in Nursing Programme. Professor Nasaif brought extensive academic and clinical expertise to his new prestigious role, holding a Doctor of Nursing Practice specialising in Educational Leadership from Case Western Reserve University USA and an MSc in Advanced Practice Nursing. His distinguished career at RCSI Bahrain since 2009 included leadership positions such as Director of the BSc (Hons) Nursing Programme and former Director of the Nursing Bridging Programme. As Director of the MSc in Nursing Programme, Professor Nasaif would oversee the development of specialised postgraduate nursing programmes, integrating cutting-edge research and knowledge into the curriculum in collaboration with the School of Nursing & Midwifery.

He also continued to engage in healthcare research in areas including advanced nursing practice, health and wellbeing of the nursing workforce, men’s health challenges and assessment and evaluation in nursing education. Professor Nasaif expressed his honour at taking on the role, aiming to further enhance the University’s contributions to nursing leadership and advanced patient-centred care for the benefit of the people of Bahrain.

Appointment of Dr Maryam Alaradi as Director of BSc in Nursing Programme

In her new role as Director of the BSc in Nursing Programme, she is responsible for overseeing and managing the undergraduate nursing programme, ensuring the delivery is in line with the academic and professional standards of the accreditation bodies. This role involves curriculum development, teaching, student supervision, and contributing to the overall advancement of nursing education at the University.

Clinical Teaching and Learning Workshop In early March, RCSI Bahrain welcomed a total of 120 Clinical Tutors, including some Alumni from six partner hospitals, on campus. This gathering was part of the final session of a Clinical Teaching and Learning Workshop for the academic year. The workshop, accredited by NHRA, provided valuable training for the University’s nursing clinical tutors, who supported N1–N3 students during their clinical placements.

The workshop was coordinated by Ms Budoor Adel, Clinical Nursing Coordinator, and facilitated by Ms Sumaya Amralla Faraj, Lecturer in Nursing, Ms Danah Smith, Lecturer in Nursing and N1 Level Director, Ms Eman Fateel, Lecturer in Nursing and N2 Level Director and Ms Zainat Ahmed, Nursing Clinical Educator. RCSI Bahrain extended its thanks to all participants and contributors for their commitment to advancing the clinical training of its nursing students.

Researchers Present at AGU Annual Faculty Research Day 2025 RCSI Bahrain was well represented at the “Annual Faculty Research Day 2025” hosted by Arabian Gulf University on 21 April, with oral presentations delivered by Dr Abu Saleh Moin, Lecturer in Biomedical Sciences, and Dr Ebrahim Rajab, Senior Lecturer in Physiology and Year 2 Co-Director. RCSI-AGU research partnership continued to be one of the most impactful and productive local collaborations, significantly contributing to several pre-clinical studies conducted by the Research Department at RCSI Bahrain under the supervision of Professor Stephen Atkin, Head of School of Post Graduate Studies and Research.

Academic Update

Early 2025, Dr Maryam Alaradi, Senior Lecturer in Nursing, was appointed as Director of the BSc in Nursing Programme in replacement of Professor Husain Nasaif. Dr Alaradi holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Nursing from the University of Louisville, Kentucky, and a MSc in Nursing from the University of Pennsylvania, USA. As a longstanding academic lecturer in Nursing, she has played an active role in the development and enhancement of the University’s undergraduate nursing programme. She chairs the Interprofessional Learning Working group and is an active member of the Diabetes Mobile Unit. Her research interests focus on perinatal mental health, sexual health, interprofessional learning and diabetes.

Academic Update

Nursing Faculty Earn PhDs The School of Nursing & Midwifery proudly celebrated the outstanding achievements of Ms Eman Fateel and Ms AliRose Sisk, who successfully earned their PhDs from esteemed UK institutions.

Their accomplishments were recognised in a special celebration attended by the President and Vice President. Ms Fateel obtained her PhD in Nursing from the University of Portsmouth, with a thesis titled ‘Self-Assessment of Content, Pedagogy, and Technology Knowledge among Higher Education Academics in Bahrain’. Ms Sisk earned her PhD in Psychiatry from University College London, with a thesis titled ‘Exploring the Palliative Care Needs of People Living with Frontotemporal Lobar Degeneration’. RCSI Bahrain congratulated them on this remarkable milestone and looked forward to their continued contributions to research and education.

Marking Undergraduate Students’ Extensive Research Contributions This semester, RCSI Bahrain celebrated the extensive research contributions of its undergraduate students, awarding 14 individuals for their valuable work in medical research.

This year, a record number of over 200 students pursued various research avenues at the University, with award-winning publications rigorously evaluated based on criteria such as journal impact factor, journal quartile rank and the degree of student authorship.

Forty-two publications emerged from research projects conducted in the past year, reinforcing the impact of student-led research.

Over 20 faculty members and eight alumni dedicated their expertise to supporting student research endeavours, highlighting the strong mentorship and collaborative environment fostered at RCSI Bahrain. Notable award recipients included Medicine Year 3 student Ms Renad Alansari, Senior Cycle 1 student Ms Sara Anjum Niinuma and Senior Cycle 2 student Ms Jenan Jameel Sh Nasser, all recognised for their contributions to significant research publications under the mentorship of Dr Roshan Deen, Professor Manaf AlQahtani and Professor Alexandra Butler respectively. The University’s summer research projects and international collaborations enabled undergraduate students to contribute to over 70 studies and participate in projects at institutions such as Keele University UK, Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi UAE and St Michael’s Teaching Hospital Canada.

The University further demonstrated its support by awarding its first Open Access Publication Grant, aiming to facilitate wider dissemination of undergraduate student-led research.

Student Choice Module: Insulin Resistance Uncovered In March, RCSI Bahrain second-year medical students took a deep dive into the science and real-world management of insulin resistance through the Student Choice Module, ‘Insulin Resistance Uncovered: A Practical Workshop’.

From Continuous Glucose Monitoring and exercise physiology to culinary medicine, stress management and clinical case presentation, this workshop bridged knowledge with practice, empowering future doctors to lead in metabolic health.

This was more than a workshop; it was a movement towards better metabolic care. Following the workshop, students were ready to take their skills to the Diabetes Mobile Unit, making a real impact in the community.

RCSI 44th Annual International Nursing & Midwifery Research & Education Conference Professor Kathryn Strachan, Head of School of Nursing and Midwifery, along with two academics and two nursing students, participated in the 44th Annual International Nursing & Midwifery Research & Education Conference held by RCSI in Dublin in February.

The conference, organised by RCSI Faculty of Nursing & Midwifery, focused on the theme "Recruiting, Developing, Retaining, and Sustaining the Global Nursing and Midwifery Workforce for Future Health and Care Needs." Dr Khadija Ahmed Matrook, Lecturer in Nursing, was honoured with the Best International Presentation Award for her exceptional oral presentation titled 'Can the UN Sustainable Development Goals Provide Opportunities for Nursing?'.

Two final-year nursing students also contributed to the conference programme: Ms Dana Ali presented a talk titled “AI-Enhanced Wound Assessment for Improved Clinical Decision-Making,” while Ms Fatema Khalil presented a poster reflecting on her exchange experience. Ms Malak Danar, Nursing Clinical Educator, delivered a qualitative study presentation.

Student Wins First Place at Primary Healthcare Centres Research Day

The study was recently published in BMC Geriatrics. Representing the research team, Fawaz delivered the oral presentation and was awarded first place among all participating researchers, an exceptional recognition of the team’s dedication and scientific contribution to primary healthcare. RCSI Bahrain commended the students and mentors involved in this impactful project and celebrated their continued pursuit of research excellence.

Academic Leadership Programme Graduates Celebrated Congratulations to Professor Ghufran Jassim, Head of Department and Associate Professor of Family Medicine, Dr Ammar Hasan, Postdoctoral Researcher and Lead in Animal Studies, and Ms Ejlal Ahmed, Academic Operations Team Lead - Clinical Sites, on successfully completing the Academic Leadership Programme. The programme was organised by the Unit for Teaching Excellence and Leadership (UTEL) at the University of Bahrain, in collaboration with Advance HE, and took place from 16 to 19 June. The programme was designed to strengthen the quality of higher education by developing academic leaders and enhancing institutional performance. Participation in the 10th Arabic Language Conference Ms Kawthar Abdulmohsen, a Senior Cycle 2 student, along with Dr Rabab Almuqahwi, Arabic Languages Course Coordinator, participated in the 10th Annual International Arabic Language Conference held in Dubai UAE. The conference brought together over 1000 Arabic language specialists to discuss research highlighting the significance of the Arabic language in modern times. During the conference, Dr Almuqahwi and Ms Abdulmohsen presented their study, "Surveying the Need for Medical Arabic Translation and Interpretation in Bahrain."

This research explored the utilisation of the Arabic language in medicine, with a particular focus on healthcare language interpretation and communication. The study was conducted in collaboration with Dr Amal Al-Qallaf, Head of the Language and Culture Unit/Senior Lecturer in English and Professor Emad Abu-Ayyash, Associate Professor of Education/TESOL, at the British University in Dubai and was published in the conference's peer-reviewed journal.

RCSI Bahrain proudly congratulated Senior Cycle 1 student Fawaz Obaid on winning first place at the inaugural Primary Healthcare Centres Research Day held in Bahrain on Thursday, 17 April. Fawaz presented a cross-sectional study titled "Potentially inappropriate medications for geriatric patients in Bahrain: prevalence, predictors, and implications for practice," which was conducted under the guidance of RCSI Bahrain physician and academic mentor Dr Mahmood Alawainati, alongside co-researchers Mr Osama Al Moaket and Mr Mahmood Abdulla, both Senior Cycle 1 students.

Students and Faculty Participate in IDF Congress in Thailand Congratulations to our students Ms Meriem Akeblersane, Ms Sama Faris Thiab (both SC1) and Ms Maryam Sayed (N4) a Diabetes Mobile Unit volunteer , Ms Meriem Akeblersane, Ms Sama Faris Thiab (both SC1) and Ms Maryam Sayed (N4), a Diabetes Mobile Unit volunteer, who attended the International Diabetes Federation World Diabetes Congress 2025 in Bangkok, Thailand, on 8 April. The students were accompanied by Ms Sarah Turner, Nursing Lecturer and Director of the N3 programme. At the congress, Ms Thiab presented a research poster entitled “Microvascular Complications in Prediabetes: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis”, highlighting the importance of early intervention in diabetes care.

The event offered an invaluable opportunity for attendees to engage with international healthcare professionals, researchers and organisations, while exploring global perspectives on diabetes management and innovation. In addition, Dr Khadija Matrook, Nursing Lecturer and N4 Director, attended the congress and presented her own systematic review and meta-analysis entitled “Family-Based Interventions for Adults with Type 2 Diabetes”, contributing to the broader academic exchange on diabetes care strategies.

Visit to National Taipei University of Nursing and Health Sciences In April, Professor Kathryn Strachan, Head of School of Nursing and Midwifery, and Dr Maryam Alaradi, Lecturer in Nursing, visited the National Taipei University of Nursing and Health Sciences in Taiwan as part of an ongoing international collaboration. The visit focused on discussions around the exchange of staff and students between the two institutions and highlighted a shared commitment to advancing nursing and health sciences education through global engagement. This event marked an important step forward in the partnership, with both institutions exploring opportunities for academic cooperation, professional development and cultural exchange.

AMH Mindful Summit 2025 Professor Charlotte Kamel, Consultant Psychiatrist and Professor at RCSI Medical University of Bahrain, was a notable speaker at the American Mission Hospital’s Mindful Summit 2025. This one-day symposium, held on Saturday, 26 April, was dedicated to the science and clinical practice of mental health.

Opening the event, Dr George Cheriyan, Corporate CEO, highlighted the urgent need for mental health initiatives across the Gulf Cooperation Council region.

The symposium brought together around 150 participants, including doctors, nurses, students, professors and mental health practitioners from schools and universities across Bahrain. Sessions covered a broad range of topics, from the genetic underpinnings of mental health conditions to neuromodulation techniques and strategies for suicide prevention.

Professor Kamel was among other distinguished speakers who contributed to the summit’s success.

Dr Bindhu Nair Delivers Talk at International Seminar on Future Libraries Dr Bindhu Nair, Head of Library Services, was invited to speak at the International Seminar on “Future Libraries, Beyond Walls”, organised by The Prof. K. A. Isaac Society for Library and Information Science in collaboration with the Department of Library and Information Science, University of Kerala, held from 8–10 July 2025.

The talk, titled “Sustainable Intelligence: Harnessing AI to Build Greener, Smarter Libraries”, highlighted innovative practices at RCSI Bahrain Library, focusing on the intersection of sustainability and artificial intelligence to shape the future of academic libraries. Drawing from the experiences and initiatives undertaken by the University’s Library, shared best practices in sustainable library operations and AI-driven innovations that enhance efficiency, reduce environmental impact and

support academic success The seminar concluded with the launch of the book Navigating the Information Landscape: Trends and Innovations in Libraries, featuring a chapter co-authored by Dr Nair and Mr Asif Altaf, Library Digital Initiatives, Services & Systems Manager, titled ‘Navigating Information Overload in Medical Education: Academic Libraries and the Evolution of Critical Thinking in the Literature (2000–2024)’. This chapter explores how academic libraries can support medical students in developing critical thinking skills amid an evergrowing and complex information environment. Sharing her experience, Dr Nair commented, “It was a privilege and honour to attend the seminar as an invited specialist in the same library school where I graduated. The talk was wellreceived and appreciated. I was able to share best practices from our library, which highlighted how well-positioned our library is in terms of innovation and the adoption of emerging technologies.”

On 12 June, Dr Suchita Dsilva, Librarian – Education and Clinical Support, represented the University at the Academic Libraries: Trends and Innovations Conference, held in Bishkek Kyrgyzstan. The event brought together delegates from 20 countries to explore emerging trends and innovations in academic libraries. At the conference, Dr Dsilva presented a collaborative research study entitled "Unveiling the Enigma of Information Literacy: An Exploration of First-Year Students’ Attitudes and Skills at RCSI Bahrain." Conducted alongside colleagues Dr Bindhu Nair, Head of Library Services, Mr Asif Altaf, Library Digital Initiatives Services and Systems Manager and Mr Muhammad Zeeshan, Librarian, the study examined the confidence-competence gap in information literacy among first-year university students and assessed the impact of targeted information literacy instruction. The study underscored RCSI Bahrain’s continued commitment to fostering students’ research capabilities and supporting their academic and professional development.

Students Undertake Biomedical Research Training at Keele University

Fourteen RCSI Medical University of Bahrain medical students arrived at Keele University on 18 June to commence a Biomedical Research Training Programme, where they developed essential research skills and gained hands-on experience in biomedical investigation. In addition, six students took part in their first accelerated Human Anatomy Dissection Course, which provided a unique opportunity to deepen both their academic understanding and clinical knowledge.

These initiatives formed part of RCSI Medical University of Bahrain Research Summer School, reflecting the University’s commitment to fostering research excellence and advancing the professional development of its students.

RCSI Medical University of Bahrain was proud to announce that its New Academic Building project successfully completed 500,000 work hours with zero Loss Time Incidents since construction started on 10 July last year.

Professor Deborah McNamara, RCSI President, Professor Cathal Kelly, RCSI Vice Chancellor, and Professor Sameer Otoom, President of RCSI Medical University of Bahrain, alongside members of the Board of Governors and Executive Committee, marked this construction safety milestone during a campus visit on 19 June. During the visit, appreciation awards were presented to valued partners, Mr Nigel Hector, General Manager of NASS Contracting, and Mr Jonathan Robinson, Project Manager at AECOM.

This achievement highlighted the University’s ongoing commitment to health, safety and well-being on site, adhering to Bahraini labour law and international best practices, including summer peak hours restrictions.

MoU Signing with Ras Al Khaimah Medical and Health Sciences University

RCSI Medical University of Bahrain further solidified its regional collaboration in medical education and healthcare practices by signing a Memorandum of Understanding with Ras Al Khaimah Medical and Health Sciences University (RAK-MHSU) during a recent official visit to the United Arab Emirates.

Annual Staff Awards Ceremony On 16 January, RCSI Medical University of Bahrain hosted its prestigious Annual Staff Awards Ceremony at the Gulf Hotel, celebrating the dedication and outstanding contributions of its staff members. Pearl Wasif Receives Award from His Highness Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa RCSI Medical University of Bahrain was proud to share that Ms Pearl Wasif, Research and Regulatory Affairs Manager, recently completed the Lamea 4 Programme. She was part of a group of inspirational youth who were honoured to be recognised by His Highness Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, His Majesty the King’s Representative for Humanitarian Works and Youth Affairs, for their completion of this programme. Ms Wasif extended her sincere gratitude to RCSI Bahrain, recognising that the University’s steadfast encouragement and confidence in her potential significantly enriched her professional journey. She expressed her appreciation of being part of a nurturing workplace that was devoted to fostering growth and development.

Celebrating Bahrain Sports Day during Health and Sustainability Week RCSI Medical University of Bahrain celebrated Bahrain Sports Day with staff and students as part of its annual Health and Sustainability Week, a campaign promoting health-conscious and sustainable practices that concluded on 22 February. As part of Bahrain Sports Day and the University’s week-long programme, students and staff took part in a variety of activities.

These activities included a fitness challenge, a volleyball tournament, complimentary health check-ups in collaboration with KIMS Hospital, a smoothie-tasting competition and environmentally sustainable games and initiatives. For the first time, this year’s edition of the campaign integrated the promotion of an active lifestyle and healthy nutrition with environmental sustainability, encouraging students and staff to adopt a more holistic approach to well-being. A dedicated campus-wide campaign recommended taking the stairs instead of lifts and to walk or carpool to the University, reducing participants’ carbon footprint while improving their physical health.

White Coat Ceremony In February, RCSI Medical University of Bahrain celebrated its White Coat Ceremony, marking the significant transition of over 200 MED 2 students to clinical training. This pivotal event symbolised the students' commitment to the medical profession and their readiness to embark on the practical phase of their education. The University extended its best wishes to all students as they commenced this new chapter in their clinical journey, anticipating their continued growth and development as future healthcare professionals.

International Nurses Day 2025 On 13 May, RCSI Medical University of Bahrain proudly hosted its annual International Nurses Day, a significant event honouring the invaluable contributions of nurses to global healthcare. This year’s theme, “Our Nurses. Our Future. Caring for nurses strengthens economies,” served as a powerful reminder of the essential role nurses play in strengthening health systems and communities.

The event commenced with a welcome address by Professor Kathryn Strachan, Head of School of Nursing and Midwifery, followed by a keynote presentation from Ms Shanine Mohebat of the World Health Organisation – Bahrain.

The programme featured research-led presentations, including Ms Jumana Salman from Salmaniya Medical Complex and Ms Sakina Mohammad, an MSc Nursing student from RCSI Bahrain.

To mark the occasion, certificates were presented, and a cake-cutting ceremony added a celebratory touch.

Library Team Introduce New Document Delivery Service In May, the Library and Learning Resource Centre at RCSI Medical University of Bahrain introduced RapidILL, a new document delivery service designed to provide users with access to journal articles and book chapters not available in current subscriptions.

RapidILL is a dynamic and robust interlibrary loan software specifically designed for fast and efficient interlibrary loan of journal articles and book chapters. This service offered a significant improvement over traditional interlibrary loan systems in terms of speed, automation, reliability and cost-effectiveness. It connected RCSI Bahrain with a global network of over 700 academic libraries, helping the University access high-quality research from institutions worldwide. RapidILL brought high-speed, cost-effective and user-friendly document delivery to RCSI Bahrain, aligning well with the institution’s academic, clinical and research missions, and supporting students and staff by ensuring timely access to essential resources.

Bahrainouna Winner RCSI Bahrain congratulated Senior Cycle 1 student, Mr William Junior Khalil, for winning third place in the Bahrainouna “The Challenge” competition by public voting. "The Challenge" competition aimed at enhancing national identity, strengthening the values of citizenship and instilling national principles and values among youth and the general public through media content. As part of the competition, Mr Khalil submitted a video spreading an important message about road safety and avoiding the use of mobile phones while driving. Commenting on his win, Mr William Junior Khalil stated that getting into the top three for public voting was a pleasant surprise, and he expressed his gratitude to everybody who took the time to vote.

American Mission Hospital Hosts Internship Completion Ceremony In the presence of Her Excellency Dr Jameela AlSalman, Head of Internal Medicine and Director of Quality & Infection Disease of American Mission Hospital and Member of the Shura Council, and His Excellency Dr George Cheriyan, Corporate Chief Executive Officer of American Mission Hospital, American Mission Hospital proudly held an Internship Completion Ceremony for the Graduates Batch of 2024 - 2025 on 13 July, in collaboration with RCSI Medical University of Bahrain and Government Hospitals.

The internship programme, coordinated by Professor Ghufran Jassim, Head of Department and Associate Professor of Family Medicine at RCSI Bahrain, had garnered increasing interest due to its rigorous standards and benchmarking against the competencies of the Irish Medical Council and the requirements of the UK General Medical Council. Dr Hana Abdulla and Dr Jannat Akram, both RCSI Bahrain Class of 2024 graduates, and Dr Kawthar Albasri, an Arabian Gulf University (AGU) graduate, were honoured in the ceremony.

RCSI Bahrain Choir Performs at ‘Chorus of Cultures’ Concert

On 23 May, RCSI Medical University of Bahrain Choir joined the esteemed Manama Singers for ‘Chorus of Cultures’, a special evening of international choral music held at Downtown Rotana. Conducted by Stefan Els, the concert brought together diverse musical traditions in a moving celebration of unity and cultural exchange.

The performance featured a rich repertoire ranging from African folk melodies and classical arias to popular music, showcasing the universal power of music to connect people across languages and borders. Now in its first year, RCSI Bahrain Choir continued to grow in strength and spirit, with many of its members bringing years of individual musical experience to the ensemble. Their participation in this collaborative concert reflected the University’s ongoing commitment to cultural engagement and community enrichment.

Future Nurses Bahrain Reunion

WFME World Conference in Thailand Ms Mona Jawad, Quality Enhancement Manager, recently attended the WFME World Conference 2025 in Bangkok Thailand, an incredible gathering that brought together over 900 participants from six continents from 25 to 28 May. The conference theme, "Achieving Health for All - Through Quality Medical Education", set the stage for four days of insightful discussions aimed at fostering global collaboration, sharing knowledge and inspiring positive change in medical education. Ms Jawad’s time at the conference was packed with a variety of plenary and parallel sessions, offering diverse insights and perspectives. Discussions covered educating the physicians of the future, AI's role in medical education and practice and continuous quality improvement via accreditation. It was an incredibly enriching experience, highlighting global efforts to advance medical education.

RCSI Bahrain was delighted to host the annual Future Nurses Bahrain Reunion on 28 May, bringing together nursing alumni and current student ambassadors to celebrate a shared mission and ongoing success. Since the inception of the Future Nurses Bahrain campaign, the aim has been to promote nursing as a vital and rewarding profession through continuous engagement, educational outreach and collaboration with schools across the Kingdom. During the reunion, Dr Eman Tawash, campaign lead, provided an overview of this year’s performance and shared plans for the future. The Community Outreach team followed with a presentation on recent school visits and a discussion of engagement guidelines. This year saw a significant rise in public awareness, student interest and community involvement. The reunion not only marked these achievements, but also offered a moment to reflect on the journey that had brought the University here. RCSI Bahrain extended its heartfelt thanks to all ambassadors, both students and alumni, whose dedication and enthusiasm had been instrumental in shaping perceptions of nursing in Bahrain.

ICA Award Ceremony 2025 RCSI Medical University of Bahrain was delighted to host this year’s International Citizenship Award Ceremony on Thursday, 29 May. This year marked a significant milestone as the University celebrated its highest number of awardees to date, with 95 exceptional students, including 83 from the School of Medicine and 12 from the School of Nursing and Midwifery.

RCSI Bahrain extended its sincere thanks to the 30 dedicated ICA mentors who guided students through the two-year programme. Mentors, all RCSI Bahrain staff members, were matched with students and supported them in completing nine reflective essays and a final essay.

The final submission was then reviewed and validated by one of the 18 ICA board members, also drawn from RCSI Bahrain faculty and staff. The University thanked all mentors, board members and attendees for helping make this celebration of civic engagement, reflection and personal growth a memorable and meaningful occasion.

AI in Action: Interactive Workshops Empower Staff Across RCSI Bahrain On 14 and 15 May, RCSI Medical University of Bahrain’s Professional Development Unit, in collaboration with the AI Committee and the IT Department, hosted two Interactive Artificial Intelligence Workshops. One session was for academic staff and the other for operational teams, with a combined attendance of 110 staff members.

The academic session explored how AI was transforming teaching, research and assessment, while the operational staff session focused on practical applications of AI in daily workflows. Key discussions included the potential of AI in Bahrain’s healthcare sector and how staff from various departments were using AI to enhance productivity and efficiency.

These sessions provided useful tips and insights that could be applied directly to improve workflows across the University, reflecting RCSI Bahrain’s commitment to embracing innovation and supporting staff in adapting to the evolving digital landscape.

Omani Students Attend Dinner Hosted by Omani Ambassador

In March, Omani students from RCSI Bahrain had the honour of attending a dinner hosted by the Omani Ambassador, His Excellency Faisal bin Hareb bin Hamad Al Busaidi. The personal invitation extended by the Ambassador provided a wonderful opportunity for the students to join a special gathering and connect with members of the Omani Embassy and the wider Omani community in Bahrain. The evening offered a welcoming and memorable experience, where students had the chance to engage in insightful conversations, expand their cultural awareness and represent the University in a diplomatic setting. RCSI Bahrain extends its heartfelt thanks to the Omani Embassy for their continued support.

RCSI Bahrain Societies Host Dermatology Research Symposium The Derma Society, in collaboration with the Medical Research Society, proudly hosted the first Dermatology Research Symposium on 1 February at RCSI Bahrain. The event aimed to promote dermatology research, provide valuable learning opportunities and foster networking among students, faculty and leading dermatology professionals.

Distinguished alumni, Dr Ameen Al Awadhi, Consultant Dermatologist and Dermatopathologist, and Dr Aysha Almoosa, Consultant Dermatologist, shared invaluable insights, inspiring students to explore this dynamic field.

The symposium featured exceptional research presentations by talented students, including Ms Lina Alsaghir, Ms Lyaba Imran and Ms Soroush Ansari, showcasing innovative studies that highlighted the power of research in advancing dermatological care. An engaging workshop on dermatology research was also hosted under the supervision of Professor Salim Fredricks, Senior Lecturer in Biochemistry, and workshop facilitators Ms Lyaba Imran, Mr Khaled Husain and Mr Adnan Al Obaidi.

Connections and Community The "Connections and Community" event successfully brought together 16 Clubs and Societies, providing students a vibrant platform to collaborate and engage with their peers.

Through ten interactive stations, students participated in a diverse range of activities, including stitching, sewing, practising CPR, poetry, improv and team challenges.

The event reflected the vibrant student life at RCSI Bahrain and underscored the importance of building skills and connections within the University community.

Student Council Elections RCSI Bahrain was delighted to announce the launch of Student Council Elections for the academic year 2025-26, with campaigns commencing on 2 March and running until 4 March. On 9 March, the 2025-2026 Student Council members were announced. The University extended its congratulations to the newly announced members. It was noted that the current Student Council (2024-2025) would remain in office until 10 July 2025, ensuring a smooth transition of leadership.

Gergaoon Event

RCSI Bahrain hosted its annual Gergaoon celebration on 11 March, marking the joyous midway point of Ramadan with a vibrant evening filled with tradition and community spirit. The event featured a live performance by a traditional band, delicious food stations showcasing local flavours, an art and crafts station and an array of engaging traditional games that brought excitement to all attendees. A highlight of the evening was the distribution of Gergaoon treats to children, embracing the cherished tradition of sharing sweets and gifts with the little ones, adding to the warmth and joy of the occasion.

Students Participate in Quran Recitation & Tajweed Competition Student Life Update

On 17 March, Applied Science University hosted the “Best Quran Recitation and Tajweed Competition” at Abdullah Nass Hall, inviting students from universities across Bahrain to participate in this inter-university event focused on the art and precision of Quranic recitation.

RCSI Bahrain was proudly represented by five students: Mr Moath Mahmoud Elsayed Hassan Daoud, MED2, Ms Mehrunisa Bilal, MED1, Ms Rawya Alabbasi, N4, Ms Fatima Zabara, MED1, and Mr Mohammad Alatoom, MED2. RCSI Bahrain was pleased to share that Mr Moath Mahmoud Elsayed Hassan Daoud was awarded third place in the competition.

Mr Daoud reflected on the experience as highly rewarding, offering a valuable opportunity to refine his recitation skills.

He also expressed appreciation for the constructive feedback and support received from the event organisers. Professor Sameer Otoom, President of RCSI Bahrain, extended his sincere congratulations to Mr Daoud on this well-deserved recognition and expressed pride in the dedication shown by all participating students.

StEP – Anti-Smoking and Vaping Campaign On Monday, 7 April, as part of the StEP Programme, RCSI Bahrain hosted an Anti-Smoking and Vaping Campaign. The event provided students and staff with the opportunity to learn about the harmful effects of smoking and vaping through a series of interactive booths. These booths were led by RCSI Bahrain students, healthcare professionals from local hospitals and representatives from the Ministry of Health. This campaign played a vital role in raising public health awareness and fostering a healthier community.

Autism Awareness Month: Alia Rehabilitation Centre Visit As part of Autism Awareness Month, the Mental Health & Psychiatry Society organised a student visit to the Alia Rehabilitation Centre for Early Intervention yesterday, accompanied by RCSI staff members Professor Charlotte Kamel, Head of Department of Psychiatry and Dr Kelly Adjei, Lecturer of Psychiatry. Students were given a comprehensive tour of the facility, where each space had been thoughtfully designed to support children’s development and well-being.

From occupational therapy and expressive arts sessions to life-skills-based cooking classes and training in habits that promote independence, the Centre reflected a strong commitment to personalised, holistic care. The visit proved to be not only educational, but also profoundly moving, as expressed by the participating students.

Buddy Appreciation Event On 22 April, the Centre for Student Success hosted a Buddy Appreciation event to thank 87 RCSI Bahrain Buddies for their dedication and contributions as student ambassadors throughout the academic year. The Buddy Programme played a vital role in supporting the successful transition, engagement and integration of new first-year students into tertiary education and the vibrant student community. The Buddy Programme was led by a team of Chief Buddies and Year Lead Buddies.

Each year, the Buddy who demonstrated exceptional commitment to the programme was presented with The Buddy Star Award. This year, for the first time, the recipient was a School of Nursing & Midwifery student, Ms Aaya Naser, N2. RCSI Bahrain extended its congratulations to all its Buddies.

CSS Engagement Award The Centre for Student Success announced Ms Jainaisha Thadani as the CSS Student Engagement Award recipient for 2024/25. This award recognised Ms Thadani's dedication to student life through her enthusiasm, leadership and involvement in student support initiatives. From 2020 to 2025, Ms Thadani consistently made a significant positive impact on her peers.

Her contributions included serving as a Buddy for two years, taking on the crucial role of Chief Buddy in AY2022, and being involved with the Buddy Booklet for three years, acting as Editor-in-Chief in AY2022.

She also volunteered for peer-led sessions, was a dedicated MED1 and SC2 PAL tutor, and contributed as a mentor. Ms Thadani's engagement and impact embodied the spirit of the CSS Student Engagement Award, fostering a more supportive academic environment at RCSI Bahrain.

Student Exchange Programme This year, RCSI Student Exchange Programme grew, strengthening the bonds across RCSI campuses.

In September, RCSI Bahrain welcomed five students from RCSI Dublin, with two joining for the entire academic year and three for a semester. Thanks to the support of the wider RCSI Bahrain community, these students enjoyed a smooth transition into the MED2 programme, with one even extending their stay for the full academic year. Their integration into RCSI Bahrain community was a testament to the University’s welcoming environment. RCSI Bahrain sent seven students to Dublin, three attending for the entire academic year and four for a semester. These exchange students became ambassadors, promoting the programme on both campuses and sharing the fantastic memories and experiences they gained. By ensuring a positive experience for visiting RCSI Dublin exchange students, the University hoped to raise awareness of its campus and increase future exchange opportunities. This programme continued to enrich students' academic and personal journeys, fostering a global RCSI experience.

RCSI Bahrain Honours Student Excellence at Annual Student Awards Ceremony RCSI Bahrain celebrated outstanding student achievements at the Annual Student Awards Ceremony on Thursday, 17 April, at the Radisson Blu Hotel. The event recognised the exceptional efforts of Clubs, Societies, the Student Council and Class Representatives, highlighting the vibrant student life on campus.

Awards were presented across several categories, including Best Academic Club (Dermatology Society), Best NonAcademic Club (Gaming Society), Best New Club (Anaesthesia Club), Best Event (Derma Symposium) and the Star Award (Cardiology Club). A special performance

by RCSI Bahrain Choir added a touch of artistic flair to the evening. The University extended its sincere thanks to all staff and departments for their continued support of student-led initiatives.

Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) Programme Student Awards The Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) Programme, a voluntary student-tostudent extra-curricular learning development initiative, continued to thrive at RCSI Bahrain. This academic year, 17 MED2 students delivered 19 PAL sessions to MED1 students, while in the senior years, 32 SC2 students were trained to deliver over 60 PAL sessions to MED3 students, focusing on clinical skills practice.

PAL Tutors received certificates for their engagement and participation, a valuable professional development tool for their future careers. After graduation, SC2 PAL Tutors had the opportunity to return as G-PALs (Graduate Peer Assisted Learning Tutors) while completing their internship year in local clinical sites; this year, 13 G-PALs supported current SC2 students as they prepared for their final exams. The SC2 Peer Assisted Learning Leadership Award was presented by the Centre for Student Success to Mr Ali Abdulrahman, SC2, for his exceptional leadership, commitment and contributions to the PAL programme.

International Night RCSI Bahrain’s International Night event successfully celebrated the rich cultural diversity of the student body.

A total of 18 nationalities shared their unique cultures through traditional attire, engaging performances and authentic regional cuisine. The event fostered a strong sense of community and cultural exchange among students.

Congratulations were extended to the Best Stall winners: Pakistan, Palestine and Syria, and to India for their winning performance. The evening was a vibrant display of global unity and student engagement.

Diabetes Mobile Unit Receives Honourable Mention from Talloires Network and MacJannet Foundation In June, the Diabetes Mobile Unit (DMU), a collaborative initiative led by RCSI Medical University of Bahrain and the Bahrain Diabetes Society, in partnership with the Rotary Club of Manama with the support of the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health, received an Honourable Mention from the Talloires Network of Engaged Universities and the MacJannet Foundation. This Honourable Mention was awarded as part of the MacJannet Prize for Global Citizenship, which recognised exceptional student-led community engagement initiatives that embodied the values of civic responsibility in higher education.

The prize was administered by the Talloires Network, a global alliance of 443 universities across 91 countries, committed to fostering social responsibility and community impact through student leadership. RCSI Bahrain extended its congratulations and gratitude to all colleagues, students and community partners involved in this impactful initiative, acknowledging its significant recognition on a global stage.

DMU Volunteers Contribute to the 23rd Al-Shurooq Diabetes Camp for Children On 16 January, Diabetes Mobile Unit volunteers, in collaboration with faculty members Ms Danah Smith, Lecturer in Nursing and N1 Director, Dr Khadija Matrook, Lecturer in Nursing, Dr Najla Shamsi, Clinical Educator in Medicine, and Dr Rawa’a Al Sayegh, Clinical Educator in Medicine, provided invaluable assistance to the 23rd Al-Shurooq Diabetes Camp for Children.

The event was held under the patronage of His Excellency Lieutenant General Dr Shaikh Mohammed bin Abdulla Al Khalifa, Chairman of the Supreme Council of Health and President of the Bahrain Diabetes Society. The Shurooq Diabetes Camp, hosted at the Nordic Hotel, was organised by the Bahrain Diabetes Society in partnership with local healthcare centres and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, Medical University of Bahrain.

The primary objective of the camp was to empower children diagnosed with Type-1 Diabetes by enhancing their selfmanagement skills through interactive and educational activities. Under the supervision of qualified nurses from various hospitals across Bahrain, DMU volunteers played an active role in delivering engaging and informative programs designed to support the children. Additionally, Dr Khadija Matrook led a transformative workshop titled "I Change and I Change," focusing on helping children better understand the psychosocial dimensions of living with Type-1 Diabetes.

Dr Najla Shamsi, for her part, conducted an insightful demonstration utilising an anatomical model of the human body to elucidate the functions of the pancreas and insulin. RCSI Bahrain extended its heartfelt gratitude to all staff members and students whose dedication and commitment contributed to the success of this important event.

StEP Diabetes Mobile Unit (DMU) Showcase Presentation On 16 January, the StEP Diabetes Mobile Unit (DMU) Showcase Presentation featured four exceptional teams of DMU N4 students, who presented innovative, bilingual tools aimed at supporting self-care management for children with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus. These tools were set to play a pivotal role in the 24th Shurooq Camp in 2026.

Each team delivered a 10-minute presentation, showcasing interactive and creative educational tools designed to empower children and their families to manage Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus effectively. The judging panel, consisting of esteemed faculty and stakeholders, evaluated the presentations and selected the winning team based on their outstanding concept and approach. RCSI Bahrain thanked the judging panel and all those who contributed to the success of this event.

Diabetes Mobile Unit – Train the Trainer The Diabetes Mobile Unit "Train the Trainer" session was held on campus in January for the extended N4 intake of students.

Led by Ms Danah Smith, Lecturer in Nursing and N1 Director, and coordinated by the Community Outreach Team, with the invaluable support of dedicated volunteers, the session equipped students with essential skills for their forthcoming roles in the health promotion campaign. The training focused on preparing students to effectively utilise educational materials, communicate health information to children and become familiar with the resources employed during school visits. The session concluded with a mock school visit rehearsal, ensuring that the students were confident and well-prepared for the upcoming events. RCSI Bahrain extended its sincere appreciation to Ms Danah Smith for her exemplary leadership, as well as to the N4 students for their enthusiasm and unwavering commitment to supporting this impactful initiative.

Successful Blood Donation Drive RCSI Bahrain was delighted to share the success of the Blood Donation Drive, held in February, in collaboration with the Central Blood Bank (Salmaniya Medical Complex), the Anatomy Society and the Haematology & Oncology Society Clubs and Societies at The Simulation Lab. Community Engagement

A total of 30 litres of blood was donated by staff and students to the central blood bank. RCSI Bahrain extended its gratitude to all donors and volunteers for their generosity and commitment, and looked forward to receiving more donors next academic year.

Suicide Prevention Talk Fosters Hope On 21 January, Professor Charlotte Kamel, Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Psychiatry at RCSI Bahrain, delivered a talk titled "Fostering Hope, Suicide Prevention." The session provided valuable insights into suicide prevention, resilience-building and effective communication strategies to support individuals in crisis.

Professor Kamel engaged attendees in discussions on challenges faced by healthcare providers in addressing mental health crises, practical tools for self-care and supporting strategies to assist students during difficult times. The talk underscored the University’s commitment to mental health awareness and support within the community.

Beach Clean-Up On 22 February, as part of Health Sustainability Week, the Estates & Facilities team collaborated with the Community Outreach Office and Muharraq Municipality to organise a beach clean-up at Busaiteen Beach, near RCSI Bahrain campus. Volunteers came together to support the initiative by cleaning the seashore, demonstrating a strong commitment to environmental sustainability and community engagement. RCSI Bahrain extended its sincere thanks to the Estates & Facilities team for their valuable support and for facilitating this meaningful initiative.

Community Engagement

Collaboration with Ministry of Education In February we hosted two successful Teddy Bear Hospital events at the campus, aiming to reduce childhood fear associated with healthcare settings and instill positive health behaviours. The Arabic session, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, welcomed 63 primary-level students, their parents and school counsellors. Both sessions offered children unique opportunities to interact with hospital-themed stations, promoting healthy habits and easing healthcare anxieties. Activities included stations on ‘Road Traffic Safety’, ‘First Aid’, ‘Triage and Radiology’ (where students used X-ray machines to identify “fractures” in teddy bears), and ‘Surgery’, where children learned about hand hygiene and engaged in an anatomy game. The events were organised by the University’s Paediatrics Society, led by Third-year medical students Ms Sara Hasan and Ms Shahad Bucheeri, in collaboration with the Community Outreach Department, including Ms Amna Almuhandes, Community Outreach Team Lead, Ms Tala El-Zein, Community Outreach Coordinator and Dr Georsan Caruth, Lecturer in Paediatrics.

Teddy Bear Hospital Events

In January, RCSI Bahrain hosted a school visit with the Teddy Bear Hospital at Abdulrahman Kanoo International School, Diyar, welcoming primary school children and their teddy bears for an interactive health education experience. Through engaging activities, children learned key health and safety principles. The Road Traffic Safety station emphasised seat belt use through a simulated car accident, while the First Aid station covered wound care, treating burns and stopping bleeding.

Parents also took part in CPR Training, learning life-saving skills from certified volunteers. Children explored Triage and Radiology, practising patient assessments and using X-ray machines to identify teddy bear fractures. At the Surgery station, they donned surgical gear, practised hand hygiene and played an anatomy game. Organised by the Paediatrics Society in collaboration with the Community Engagement department, the initiative aimed to ease children’s anxiety about healthcare while promoting lifelong health and safety habits in a fun, hands-on way. RCSI Bahrain extended its thanks to all parties for their contribution and support, especially to its students.

Colorectal Cancer Awareness Campaign Engages Community The Community Engagement Office, in collaboration with the School of Nursing and Midwifery, launched the Colorectal Cancer Awareness Campaign on 2 March. This initiative aimed to emphasise the importance of early detection and prevention, equipping the community with vital knowledge about colorectal cancer.

As part of this campaign, staff and students were invited to engage in an interactive and educational experience through the Colorectal Cancer Inflatable Model, which provided a unique opportunity to learn about colorectal health in an engaging and immersive way. The inflatable model was on display in the Atrium at RCSI Bahrain until 3 March, serving as an informative exhibit on colorectal health, risk factors and preventive measures. Following its display at RCSI Bahrain, the exhibit travelled to partner hospital locations.

The campaign site visits were successfully completed during the month of Ramadan, marking the last day on 24 March at King Hamad American Mission Hospital.

The inflatable model was displayed at partner hospitals, including King Hamad University Hospital, where it was visited

by His Excellency Colonel (Dr) Salman bin Mohammed Al Khalifa, Commander of KHUH, and King Hamad American Mission Hospital, visited by His Excellency the Chief of Medical Staff Dr Deepak Abraham. The inflatable model highlighted colorectal health, risk factors and preventive measures, attracting over 300 visitors who engaged with enthusiastic student volunteers to learn about the warning signs of colorectal cancer. This initiative reflected RCSI Bahrain’s ongoing commitment to health education, prevention and community outreach.

Future Nurses Bahrain Campaign School Visits Our dedicated nursing alumni, serving as Nurse Ambassadors, together with our enthusiastic Year 4 nursing students, engaged with students from 19 girls’ high schools and 13 boys’ high schools. This initiative, led by Dr Eman Tawash and the Community Engagement Office, continues to play a vital role in promoting the nursing profession and contributing to the future of Bahrain’s healthcare workforce. Through these interactive school visits, our Nurse Ambassadors and students shared insights and personal experiences, offering a closer look into the life and impact of a nurse.

We extend our sincere thanks to the Ministry of Education and all participating government schools for their support in making this campaign a success. We would also like to recognise the outstanding efforts of our alumni—Ms Salwa Abdulmalek (2018), Ms Hawraa Saeed (2020), Ms Kashwer Riza (MSc Nursing), and Mr Hamad Saud (2015)—whose commitment and support were instrumental in organising the visits and mentoring our ambassadors. As we reflect on these achievements, we look forward to reconnecting with our ambassadors at the upcoming Future Nurses Alumni Reunion as we continue to inspire the next generation of nurses.

MCP Students Drive Community Impact

Their efforts went far beyond financial support; students dedicated their time to playing with children, creating and selling arts and crafts, distributing Ramadan family bags, organising treasure hunts, volunteering at Halla Autism Café, feeding and walking rescue animals and much more. To raise funds, the students organised a variety of creative activities, from selling storybooks, mugs and local snacks to hosting carnival-style games, darts, air hockey and mind puzzles. Their hard work paid off; in just two weeks, they raised over 2,500 BD through these fundraising and donation efforts. A huge thank you was extended to all staff and students who supported and contributed to these initiatives.

Global Paediatric Surgery: Tanzania Clinical Outreach In late March, senior medical (Senior Cycle 2) student Ms Asal Buhasan and nursing (N4) student Mr Abdulla Al Balooshi had the unique opportunity to join the Operation Child Life (OCL) team on a clinical outreach trip to Muhimbili Hospital in Tanzania. Under the guidance of Professor Martin Corbally, Dr Dhafir Al Khudairi and Dr Nicola Cullen, the students observed life-changing paediatric care, including 12 surgeries performed on children. In addition to observing consultations and working alongside local healthcare professionals, they were exposed to a range of complex cases, including tumours and congenital liver conditions. The experience provided them with valuable clinical insight and a deeper understanding of healthcare delivery in a global context.

On 13 May, the students presented their experiences, capturing the depth of their learning—observing 12 paediatric surgeries, engaging in consultations and collaborating with global healthcare leaders.

The event received high praise from the President of RCSI Bahrain, who commended the students for their professionalism, empathy and commitment to global health.

The audience echoed this sentiment, offering warm remarks on the students’ confidence, insight and the clarity of their reflections. This presentation was not just a showcase of clinical exposure; it was a testament to the values upheld by the University: compassion, collaboration and global citizenship.

Community Engagement

In March, students from 16 MCP students, under the guidance of Dr Anthony Friel, Lecturer in Communications (MCP), Ms Amna Al Muhandes, Community Outreach Team Lead, and Ms Tala El-Zein, Community Outreach Coordinator, came together to make a real impact on the local community. Through a mix of volunteering, fundraising and donation drives, 58 students worked to support eight charities across Bahrain. The charities included Bahrain Down Syndrome Care Centre, Bahrain Red Crescent Society, Bahrain Cancer Society, Al Sanabel Orphan Care Society, Smiles, Bahrain Autistic Society, Alia Autism and BARC.

Community Engagement

Teddy Bear Hospital Event The Paediatrics Society successfully organised another heartwarming Teddy Bear Hospital event, this time dedicated to children with diabetes, at King Hamad American Mission Hospital on Saturday, 19 April. This initiative was part of a broader series of Teddy Bear Hospital events, held in collaboration with the Community Engagement Office, throughout the academic year.

Each event shared a common goal: to ease children’s anxiety around healthcare by introducing them to medical environments in a playful, engaging and age-appropriate manner.

During the event, each child brought along a teddy bear, which served as both a patient and a comforting companion.

The children visited a series of interactive stations designed to promote health awareness and self-care, including Registration, Triage, X-Ray, Anatomy, Insulin, Injury Awareness, Exercise, Nutrition, Dentistry, a Mental Health Clinic and an Arts and Crafts Waiting Area. This creative approach not only enhanced children’s understanding of important health concepts but also empowered them to feel more confident and supported in managing their condition. The Paediatrics Society continued to play a key role in sustaining this cherished annual tradition, consistently demonstrating initiative, compassion and dedication through every event they organised.

Hypertension Awareness Campaign Launched In the presence of Her Excellency Dr Jameela AlSalman, Head of Internal Medicine and Director of Quality & Infection Disease of American Mission Hospital and Member of the Shura Council, His Excellency Mr Peter Kennedy, Chief Operating Officer of American Mission Hospital, and Dr Eman Tawash, Senior Lecturer in Nursing and Deputy Head of School of Nursing and Midwifery at RCSI Medical University of Bahrain, a hypertension awareness and screening campaign was launched at The Avenues Mall on May 22nd.

This campaign, which ran until 24 May, aimed to increase public awareness and knowledge about elevated blood pressure, highlight the risk factors of hypertension and

possibly identify undiagnosed cases of hypertension among the general public. As a joint collaboration between both institutions, healthcare professionals and academic nursing lecturers extended their support to visitors by providing medical advice based on medical history and lifestyle factors, as well as complimentary screening results for blood pressure, blood sugar and Body Mass Index.

Medical and nursing student volunteers of RCSI Medical University of Bahrain, supported by nursing lecturers, provided valuable assistance to visitors and collaborated closely with healthcare staff members throughout the campaign.

Successful Ramadan Campaign Concludes with Donation On 5 May, RCSI Bahrain concluded its Ramadan Campaign with a donation handover to the Tree of Life Society, where representatives from the society attended the handover occasion and expressed their gratitude for RCSI Bahrain’s continued support and engagement with the community.

RCSI Bahrain extended its sincere appreciation to students and staff for their generous contributions and support throughout the Ramadan Campaign in March. Their kindness and commitment made a meaningful difference in the lives of those in need. Special appreciation went to the Student Services and Events team for their coordination and efforts in facilitating this initiative, and to all student volunteers from various clubs and societies who supported this initiative.

Senior Students Share Transformative Vietnam Surgical Experience

As part of RCSI Bahrain’s continued collaboration with Operation Child Life (OCL), senior medical and nursing students gained invaluable hands-on learning at Children’s Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. In late January, Senior Cycle 1 student Mr Shaikh Salman Al Khalifa, Ms Zarish Husain, N4 student Ms Duaa Buhammood and Ms Fatema Al Khatri delivered a compelling presentation to senior management, the OCL team, staff and students, sharing key insights from their journey.

They reflected on their observations in Paediatric Oncology, Neurosurgery and Interventional Radiology, as well as their mentorship under Professor Martin Corbally, Head of Department and Professor of Surgery. This experience not only enhanced their clinical exposure but also reinforced the importance of global humanitarian efforts. The presentation served as an inspiration to many, highlighting the impact of OCL’s 20 year partnership Community Engagement

Laptop Donation to Families in Need Through a collaboration with the Rashid AlZayani Foundation with the support of iWorld, RCSI Medical University of Bahrain donated 28 laptops to students from families in need in Bahrain on 3 February. As part of the University’s ongoing commitment to serving the local community, Ms Fawzia al Zaman, Head of Information and Communication Technology, Ms Amna Al Muhandes, Community Outreach Team Lead, and Mr Fadi Ghosn, Head of Recognition Careers & Alumni, RCSI Medical University of Bahrain, welcomed Mr Omar Ayoob, Manager, Rashid AlZayani Foundation, and Mr Abhijit Mangle, General Manager, iWorld, on the campus to facilitate the donation.

The used laptops, all in excellent condition, were checked by iWorld prior to distribution to families in need supported by the Rashid AlZayani Foundation. This initiative marked the second occasion on which the University had donated consumer electronics to support local communities in Bahrain, following a previous donation in 2021 of 30 desktop computers and eleven electronic devices through the same foundation.

UK Alumni-Led Talk on Emergency Response

In January, Dr Fatema Ali, Class of 2019, an Internal Medicine Registrar in Training at Nottingham University Hospitals, led an interactive session on emergency response in the UK, with a focus on acute medicine. Drawing from her background in clinical teaching, she shared her insights on safe medical practice and learning environments, providing valuable guidance to students and fellow alumni.

Highlights from the Kuwait Dermatology Community

Dr Adnan Ahmad, Class of 2021, proudly represented RCSI Medical University of Bahrain at the Annual Conference for Dermatology, Laser & Aesthetic Medicine (KSDC) in Kuwait.

He served as part of the organising team, presented six research posters and won first place for Best Case Presentation during the MEIDAM Association Grand Round, showcasing his significant contributions to the dermatology community. Dr Ahmad was also recently appointed as Head of the Social Committee for the Kuwaiti Board of Dermatology, leading a team dedicated to community engagement and resident support, further solidifying his prominent role in the field.

In February, Dr Moeen Aboabdo, Class of 2019, led a Q&A session focused on navigating the US medical training pathway. Dr Aboabdo shared his experiences and advice, reflecting on his journey from RCSI Bahrain to residency and fellowship training in the US. Nursing Specialty Talks Series

The “Nursing Specialty Talks Series” kicked off in February with Mr Husain Alasfoor, Class of 2021, Bahrain’s Junior Alumni Ambassador (Nursing) and Industrial Nurse at BAPCO Gas, Bahrain, who delivered a talk on Occupational Health with a focus on oil and gas. The second talk of the series was delivered in March by Ms Fatema Makahla, Class of 2015, Oncology and Palliative Nurse Manager at Bahrain Oncology Centre (Royal Medical Services). The talk focused on the pathway from emergency to oncology & palliative care. The final session discussed the journey through critical care, quality and nursing leadership by Mr Fahad Altailasan, Class of 2017, Nursing Quality Coordinator at King Hamad University Hospital – Royal Medical Services.

Iftar in Manchester

In March, the UK Alumni Ambassadors Dr Ali Abdulnabi, Class of 2013, and Dr Zainab Fadhul, Class of 2021, hosted an Alumni Iftar gathering in Manchester, celebrating the holy month of Ramadan with fellow graduates. During the event, the UK Alumni Book Club was officially launched

by Dr Maryam Alfardan, Class of 2024, and Dr Mohamed Toorani, Class of 2018. The book club planned to meet every two months, with its first featured title being Chess Story by Stefan Zweig.

Virtual Talk – From Classroom to Career In February, some nursing alumni enjoyed a “Mugs & Memories” gathering hosted by the Alumni Ambassadors, Ms Hawra Saeed, Class of 2020, and Mr Husain Alasfoor, Class of 2021. Twelve nursing alumni attended and were joined by three medical alumni who stopped by before attending their Anaesthesia Workshop, held in collaboration with the Anaesthesia Society.

In March, Dr Nazha AlFaraj, Class of 2022, and Dr Adnan Ahmad, Class of 2021, both residents at the Kuwait Institute for Medical Specialisations, led an online session on career development, electives and CV enhancement. This virtual talk provided accessible and practical advice to students preparing for their professional journeys.

Alumni Excellence Recognised at Annual Ghabga In March, RCSI Bahrain alumni gathered for a truly unforgettable ghabga. The highlight of the evening was announcing the winners of the Inspiring Excellence Award: Dr Yahya Alwatari, Class of 2015, Dr Rola Husain, Class of 2011, and Ms Lolwa Almuqla, BSc Nursing 2014, MSc Nursing 2022.

It was an inspiring moment to celebrate their incredible achievements. The event offered plenty of food, laughter and reminiscing about past experiences, providing a perfect

evening to reconnect, share stories and make new memories. A huge thank you was extended to everyone who joined and to all the teams that supported the event.

Residency Match Success On 28 April, RCSI Medical University of Bahrain proudly hosted its ERAS and CaRMS Match Party, both in person and virtually, to honour the incredible achievements of its students and graduates who successfully matched into North American residency programmes.

This year, 34 RCSI Bahrain students and graduates matched into a wide range of specialties across the United States and Canada, an outstanding accomplishment that reflected years of dedication, resilience and hard work.

The event brought together matched students and graduates, faculty, senior management and members of the Careers and Alumni Office to celebrate this milestone.

The University extended its heartfelt congratulations to each matched student and graduate, and sincerely thanked the many individuals who supported them along the way, including faculty, clinical staff, administrative teams and mentors, whose guidance, encouragement and unwavering support were instrumental in helping them reach this point.

Dr Sharefa Alansari Honoured with 2025 Intern Award

Dr Sharefa Alansari, Class of 2024, was named the distinguished recipient of the annual Intern Award for 2025.

Dr Alansari, whose internship was undertaken at the Royal Medical Services - Bahrain Defence Force Hospital, was recognised for demonstrating exemplary professionalism, comprehensive competence and an unwavering commitment to patient-centred care. RCSI Medical University of Bahrain Intern Award acknowledged interns who exhibited exceptional qualities to their mentors and colleagues throughout their clinical placement. Dr Alansari's dedication to her patients and her proactive engagement in the learning process were highly commended by her professional colleagues.

A celebratory event was held to honour Dr Alansari’s achievement, with attendees including Professor Alfred Nicholson, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Head of School of Medicine; Professor Naji Alamuddin, Associate Professor in Medicine & Deputy Head of School of Medicine; Dr Nichola McLarnon, Head of Quality & Academic Development; and Ms Sawsan Jahromi, Alumni Coordinator. Dr Alansari stated, "My internship provided me with unlimited opportunities to learn, and it taught me how to approach patients, build rapport, and systematically organise differential diagnoses, along with appropriate investigations and management plans. Being given responsibility instilled in me the discipline to be thorough and meticulous with the smallest details concerning each patient I encountered. It was a safe and nurturing environment that offered all the support needed at every stage of my journey."

Ambulance Tour & Trauma Workshop In April, Ms Hawra Saeed and Mr Husain Alasfoor organised an “Ambulance Tour” with Bahrain Specialist Hospital for nursing and medical students.

The initiative was held in collaboration with RCSI Medical University of Bahrain Nursing Society and as part of a “Trauma Workshop” that was delivered by five alumni leads including Dr Eman Fateel, MSc Nursing, Class of 2013, Ms Asma Alnajjar, Class of 2010, Ms Salwa Abdulmalek, Class of 2018, Mr Ismaeel Alawadhi, Class of 2021, and Mr Husain Alasfoor, Class of 2021. The interactive session offered attendees the opportunity to tour a real ambulance, get hands-on with the equipment used in emergency settings, learn about ambulance procedures and emergency logistics and gain insight into the role of multidisciplinary teams in critical care.

Alumni Dinner in Canada The University was pleased to host an alumni dinner in Downtown Toronto on Saturday, 3rd May. It was a pleasure to reconnect with graduates and celebrate the strength of the global network. A special thanks was extended to Dr Fares Al-Fares, Class of 2013, Canada’s Senior Alumni Ambassador, and Dr Moshira Mahran, Class of 2021, Canada’s Junior Alumni Ambassador, for their presence at the event.

Dr Al-Fares was a Paediatric Haematology Oncology Fellow at IWK Health, Dalhousie University, Halifax, and Dr Mahran was a Paediatrics Resident at the University of Western Ontario, Ontario.

Internship 101 Booklet Underway Led by Dr Taibah Al-Adraj, Class of 2022, and Dr Zainab Toorani, Class of 2016, this project was aims to develop a booklet that would serve as a practical guide to help graduating medical students through the transition from student to practising doctor. It would provide clear, concise and actionable advice on essential topics such as applying for an internship programme, writing admission and progress notes, obtaining NHRA license, creating a CV and residency options in Bahrain.

RCSI Bahrain extended its congratulations to Dr Maryam Al-Shehabi, Class of 2025, for her role as Chair and Coordinator of the National Model United Nations (NMUN) Conference held by the North Sehla Youth Empowerment Center (NSYC) in coordination with the Ministry of Youth Affairs. The activities of the United Nations Model Conference (NSYC-MUN), held under the title "A Moment of Reflection and Retrospection", concluded on 23 June and witnessed the participation of 125 young men and women from the Kingdom of Bahrain and the Gulf Cooperation Council countries.

The conference was the first of its kind in the Kingdom to be organised by a youth centre, representing a qualitative shift in programmes aimed at building youth capacity in the fields of international diplomacy, decision-making and institutional communication, through a realistic simulation of the structures and mechanisms of the United Nations.

During the conference sessions, participants played the roles of diplomats representing countries and international organisations, and discussed prominent international issues and matters within a robust dialogue environment that fostered critical thinking, public speaking, leadership, negotiation and the formulation of international resolutions. Dr Al-Shehabi praised the exceptional enthusiasm shown by the participating youth, stressing that the conference was not just a simulation experience, but an an opportunity to rediscover oneself and promote the values of dialogue, pluralism and respect for diversity.

MSc Nursing Scholarships Awarded to Distinguished Alumni RCSI Bahrain extended its congratulations to alumni Mr Khaled Alhusain, BSc in Nursing Class of 2013, and Ms Shaikha Balajam, BSc in Nursing Class of 2022, for receiving the MSc in Nursing scholarship. This recognition was for their significant contributions to the healthcare sector, highlighting their continued dedication and the University's commitment to supporting advanced nursing education.
