18. PROPHETS OF THE OLD TESTAMENT - The prophets were a dynamic group of men, and also thee were prophetess, Miriam, Exodus 15:20; Deborah, Judges 4:4; Huldah, II Kings 22:14: Noadiah, Nehemiah 6:14, the prophetess (Isaiah’s wife) Isaiah 8:3; Anna, Luke 2:36.
The prophets lived in the days of national and international upheaval. They saw the great kingdoms battling for power, and saw them rise and fall into ruins. Truly they could say “Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people,” (Pr 14:34).
Some of these prophets were geniuses, while others were not gifted. Some were back woodsmen, while others were men of the city. Some spoke in rugged, and blunt prose, while others used the language of poetry. They all spoke the truth as they saw it, and had much in common. 11 Timothy 3:16,17:11 Peter 1:20,21; Numbers 11:25; I Kings 22:14; II Chronicles 24:30; Jeremiah 1:9,10; Ezekiel 3;17.
The prophets were lonely men because of their insight, they saw what the layman did not see. They saw the wickedness, ungodliness, transgressions, and its results, ruin, destruction, and eternity.
The Hebrew word for prophet is aybn nabiy’ naw-bee’ and means spokesman as one who announces, one who brings a message from God. Our word “prophet” has essentially the same meaning, one who speaks by divine inspiration as the interpreter, or spokesman of God, whether it be by message of duty and warning or a prediction of sonic future events. The twofold meaning is due to the preposition “pro” which is the
Greek form, for and before, so that the prophet is one who tells future events.
The prophets were raised up among the people, and were called of God for some particular purpose and need.
There are two classes of prophets: 1. Literary prophets; 2. Oral prophets. There were prophets, priests, levites, and scribes.
