THE COLLEGE COAT OF ARMS The elements of the College coat of arms are explained below: the owl is a symbol of wisdom. the shield, separated by a chevron, symbolises the roof of the house in which most general practice takes place. One side is white to represent day and the other black to represent night. The three spaces are occupied by a white poppy, signifying relief of pain and suffering; a gentian flower indicating medicine and the restorative and rehabilitative role of the GP; and, finally, the Greek lamp indicates the importance of study and research in the work of the College and links with the lamp of nursing.

The College arms were granted in 1961 by the College of Arms in England (a separate but almost identical coat of arms was approved by the Lord Lyon in Scotland).

The College motto Cum Scientia Caritas – compassion with knowledge.

Robes and insignia The current President’s gown was instigated in 2012 to mark the 60th anniversary of the College.

the unicorn is adopted from the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries. the lynx is adopted from the arms of the Royal College of Surgeons. the gavel symbolises authority. the serpent is the ancient symbol of medicine.

It has incorporated the College arms and reflects the College blue of our modern logo.

The President’s chain was gifted to the College in 1958. It is cast in 9-carat yellow and white gold and consists of a medallion of a white-gold poppy entwined with a yellow-gold foxglove and alternating with entwined serpents in white gold. The medallion of the College coat of arms was added in 1963.

The Members’ gown is black with white facing.

The Chair of Council wears a badge that incorporates the College arms with the names of all previous College Chairs on the ribbon in gold.

An organisation or other body can only be recognised as an independent legal entity if it has been granted either a Royal Charter or a Memorandum and Articles of Association by the Board of Trade.

It would be fair to say that there was more than a little resistance to the formation of an independent college of general practitioners in the early 1950s – not least by the three London based medical royal colleges then in existence. In view of this, the College’s founders were advised to seek a Memorandum and Articles rather than a Royal Charter – as this was a process that was less likely to be challenged by others. Such Articles of Association were granted in 1952.

The plan had always been to apply for a Royal Charter and this was duly granted in 1967. It was formally presented to the College in 1972 when HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh became the College’s first royal president.

In common with other Royal Charters, the charter is a vellum document with a large wax seal attached to it. It is a valuable document and is currently kept in the climate controlled college archives. It is only displayed on very special occasions.

WELCOME Welcome to the Royal College of General Practitioners New Members’ Ceremony. We are delighted to welcome you and your guests to this very special occasion here in Harrogate.

The RCGP exists to help its members deliver great care for patients. Being a GP is a rewarding and stimulating but demanding profession, and the times when we can celebrate our successes together are very special. This is particularly true as we restart our live presentation ceremonies following a long gap caused by the COVID-19 global pandemic. Today we formally – and joyfully! – welcome new Members and Fellows to the RCGP; this event marks your efforts and achievements and hopefully will create some very special moments and memories. We want to say “Thank you!” to all of you for choosing general practice, and also want to thank all those who have supported you in your journey.

We hope that today will leave you feeling proud, and will encourage you to find out more about the opportunities that the RCGP can offer. Having professional networks is a key means for career development and personal wellbeing. Whether CPD, peer support, guidance from others at different career stages, special interest groups, and new professional opportunities, we want to answer your questions and help you use your membership to the full and build on

this momentum across the next stages of your careers. The RCGP also advocates on behalf of our speciality, and are always keen to hear your views and ideas. Other parts of this booklet point out the role of your local Faculty, who have representatives who speak for members on Council, and guide the College on members’ needs.

As President, I am elected to represent the members. I am delighted that I will meet many of you today in person and to be part of your celebration. You deserve your award! And I am sure it will help you to aspire to even higher professional commitment to excellent patient care. As the College motto says “Cum Scientia Caritas” – scientific skill applied with compassionate kindness. Being a GP is a vocation where interacting with the patient as a human being can matter as much to effective diagnosis and treatment as the technical knowledge.

You deserve others to be kind to you, as you undertake this vital work.

Welcome and congratulations to you and your guests to this new member ceremony in Harrogate.

Congratulations on becoming a fully independent GP, today provides you and your loved ones with an opportunity to celebrate, reflect and absorb what you have achieved over not only some of the toughest years of your training, but the hardest years our healthcare system has ever had to face.

The obstacles you would have had overcome to achieve this – learning how to remote consult, the uncertainty of a new examination style, looking after those friends and family members who became unwell, or your own health challenges cannot be overlooked or downplayed.

You are about to embark on a career that will provide you with many opportunities over the coming years. As a college, we are here to support you and provide you with the resources and guidance you may require. We want to encourage you to make the most of your qualifications, dream big and let your enthusiasm for this specialty open up new doors for you.

We would love to have many of you join us going forward to strengthen our faculty board and help us to improve life for our members in Yorkshire.

Our faculty supports over 2,000 members, Fellows, Associates and Associates in Training in the Yorkshire area, which covers West Yorkshire (Leeds, Wakefield, Kirklees, Calderdale) and Harrogate. Alongside supporting our local GPs, we also strive to be the first point of contact for our members.

Our board members include medical students from the Leeds GPSoc, First5s and members at all stages of their career. The Yorkshire Faculty is one of few faculties to also have non-GP members on its board including nurses and practice managers.

Thank you again for sharing this special day with us and we look forward to seeing what great achievements you will go on to have in the future.

Dr Mahroof is a GP in North Lincolnshire and LMC vice chair of South Humberside.

Dr Ogunnaike is a salaried GP in Hart Medical Practice, a husband and a father to triplet boys. He is grateful to God and would like to thank his trainers, supportive wife and family for their immense support throughout his training.

Dr Majeed is a GP principal working in north staffs. Today he would like to thank his parents for their uncounted sacrifices through his life and his wife for her unconditional support throughout this journey. Whatever he is today is because of you all. Thank you.

Dr Odumade is delighted to be a GP. She is grateful to God, her husband, Dr Olusoji Odumade, her sons, Albert, David, Vincent and Richard, her everloving parents, Mr & Mrs Adefioye, family and Dr Femi Odumade and family. Thank you all for your prayers and tremendous support. She would also like to acknowledge her trainers, friends and colleagues in making this dream a reality.

Abdal-Salam Abdal-Kadir Hosain Al-Ubaidi Dr Al-Ubaidi works as a locum GP in A&E. He would like to thank his wife, Nawal Algyaar, and his mentor, Dr Stephen Taylor. Thanks to his children; Zaid, Ali and Haydar and grandchildren; Yunis, Hussain, Hassan and Yasin. This certificate is a gift to all of his family and also to his father, Abdulkadir, late mother, Haleema, sisters and daughtersin-law, Yousrah and Yusra.He survived wars, and years of sanctions and very hard times in Iraq and he had to sit several exams in UK despite his hearing difficulty and age. He follows two rules: 1.never giving up. 2. Not to forget rule one.

Abimbola Oludotun Otesile Dr Otesile is a GP working in Doncaster.

He gives special thanks to his wife, children, extended family and friends.

Ahsan Munir Dr Munir is a salaried GP based in Stoke-on-Trent. Their journey hasn't been easy but they are thankful to friends and family, especially their mother, Nusrat. Without her immense support they couldn't have done this.

Aisha Fasial Balal Butt Dr Butt would like to express her gratitude to her parents, especially her dad, for being her guiding light throughout her life. Dr Osire began his journey in Russia where she gained her MD degree in 2012. She is currently a salaried GP in Grimsby, where she completed her training. To her cheerleaders, led by her husband, to Almighty God to whom she owes her all, she says thank you.

Dr Raja has been tremendously lucky to be a South Worcestershire trainee, trained by the best trainers in the country. Ameena Mohamood Dr Mohamood is working as a salaried GP in Essex. She is delighted with the completion of specialty training and proud to be a member of RCGP. Amna Adeel Anwar Dr Anwar is working as a salaried GP in Bradford. She was a practicing Obstetrician and Gynaecologist in the past. She aspired to become a GP soon after coming to the UK. She is here today because of the continued support of her husband, prayers of her parents and her loving daughters.

Chinwe Chinasa Onyeani Dr Onyeani is a GP working in the East Midlands area. They want to thank God Almighty, their family, present here today, and friends for all their immense support and care throughout their training years and further on. It's been, and still remains, a pleasure serving their community.

Dinas Kamil Eltayeb Idris Dr Idris is a GP in Altrincham. She would like to thank her family, especially her parents, for all their love and support and her husband for all his patience. He has been her rock during this journey. A special thanks to her superhero sons, Ziad and Firas, for being such good boys all those times mummy was too busy to play.

Edda Dorothea Schuerch Dr Edda is so proud to have competed this journey and wants to say a massive thank you to her husband and three children.

Emeka David Onyemachi Dr Onyemachi notably recognises his dearly departed father who remains a constant source of strength and inspiration for him. He also recognises his wife Remilekun and beautiful children Aviella and Jordan for their unflinching support and his Mum Elizabeth and in-laws (the Adesiyans) for their unwavering belief in him.

Idamieibi Sodienye Allison Dr. Allison works as a salaried GP in Birmingham. He has a keen interest in addressing health inequalities among minority populations. He is grateful to the team of individuals who have been there throughout his training journey.

His supervisor, Dr. Alex Sobainsky, family back home in Nigeria and his friends, Laurah, David, Denis, Ann, Chidinma, Uche and Uchechi. He would also like to recognize the help of the TPDs and other colleagues who made the three years of training an enjoyable adventure. Thank you all.

Dr Nwafor says that being a mum and a wife is a beautiful thing but combining it with training was not an easy task. Mohamed Kamil El Tayeb Idris Dr Idris is working as a GP in Derby. He completed his training in Durham and relocated to Derby so that his wife could pursue her career as a Dentist. Dr Oji is the author of the novel "To Err is Woman" and an entrepreneur. He believes that the best work life balance one can achieve must come from solution creation and trying out other interests. He loves to simply plug gaps!

He is grateful to his wife and sons, his parents and of course, Jesus Christ.

Dr Esewe is working as a salaried GP in Ashley Surgery, Market Drayton, the practice where he completed his ST3 year. He is grateful to his wife, Dami, and two daughters for always giving him reasons to smile even during the difficult days. Special thanks to his trainers, Dr Shilvock and Dr McVerry, for all their support.

Olasunkanmi Othniel Adebayo Dr Adebayo's journey into medicine has been arduous but worthwhile. They were the first person to go to university in their family, graduating in Nigeria 21 years ago. Being resilient and having family support made it all happen. All glory to God.

Oluseye Kayode Mayowa Dr Mayowa says that if penicillin can be made from mould, then you can achieve whatever you set your heart to do. They are grateful to God and their amazing family for their continuous support.

Oluwasegun Sunday Olupitan Dr Olupitan is taking time to be with family, who really deserve all of their time. Thank you Yewande, Timi and Koye.

He is here with his family and would like to thank his wife, Mrs Lynda Ijeh, for being with him through all the ups and downs - he could not have achieved this without you. Rajeev Husain Latif Dr Latif is a salaried GP in Hull. He would like to express his heartfelt gratitude to his wife, Dr. Sultana, who is also a member of the RCGP, and his two daughters, Rifah and Raimah. Without their continuous support it would have never been possible to be where he is today.

Titilope Ruth Oluwaniyi Dr Oluwaniyi obtained her MBChB in Nigeria and MSc in International Public Health Nutrition from the University of Westminster, London. She completed her training with Sherwood Forest VTS. Her next goal is to pursue a career with the United Nations and become an MP in future.

Uchechukwu Okafor Dr Okafor is a salaried GP in Doncaster.

He trained in the Doncaster Training scheme. He is married to Ann and they have three children; Kene, Kamsi and Kosi.

Uchechukwumere Nwosu Dr Nwosu is working as a GP in Telford.

He would like to thank his wife, Osamede, children, Kairo and Jayamma, as well as his parents. He would love to thank his trainer, Dr Gear, who saw him through his final year in training.
