Welcome to the June Edition of Rosslare Newsletter Look out for the Economic & Community Investment Programme 2018-2022 published by Wexford County Council.

A very impressive and well-laid out document. Credit is due to the Council for spreading the benefit of available largesse far and wide across the county. It includes 12m euro for the RosslareWaterford Greenway and a further 3.5m for the Wexford to Rosslare Strand Greenway. The Greenways will ultimately be part of a national network.

However many people would choose to prioritise the roads and footpaths as well as the coastal protection promised by government since last year and earlier. So hopefully next year the Council will see fit to deliver the promised new roads and pathways in the village. We submitted our comprehensive 5year development plan (first draft) and made repeated overtures and representations to the Council for assistance in this regard. Our village cannot be left behind.

What are we to do? As part of our active campaign, we will invite successful candidates in the local elections to meet with us for an outline presentation of the community’s plans for Rosslare and seek their support in our future discussions with the County Council CHAMPION: Bet you didn’t know we have an All-Ireland boxing champion in our midst. Great achievement by young Lauren Mullally of Rosslare Boxing Club who won the All-Ireland Girls 39kg category. Congratulations to Lauren and her mentor Austin Codd.

Plaudits also for the Rosslare Mens Shed who, out of 168 entries, won 2nd place in the nationwide competition to set out the most imaginative historic presentation. The theme was the Marconi connection with Rosslare and Jim Fortune and Peter McQueen drove the project.

Erratum: Tidy Towns have not decided to re-affiliate to Rosslare Development Association contrary to a report in last month’s newsletter. The Chairman of RDA said his interpretation of the outcome of a meeting to discuss the issue was disputed and the matter is still open to discussion Ray Doyle, RDA

Rosslare Kettlebell Club bring home World Medals Rosslare Kettlebell Club attended the World Kettlebell Sports Federation (WKSF) World Championships at Gormanston Park at the end of May where the club took home 3 x Gold, 3 x Silver and 1 x Bronze medals to Rosslare.

The club now have 3 new World Champions returning to the club in Carmel Doyle who competed in veteran category and finished wit a massive 11 rep PB of 67 reps in 2 x 16kg Long Cycle. Marie Neiland also competed in veteran category against Scotland and won triumphantly with 109 reps with 1 x 16kg bell and their 17 year old Junior legend Caoimhe Van DerBliake took home Gold in Snatch 16kg with 162 reps in a very tough set. This was Caoimhe’s first time competing at such a high level international competition.

Leanne Hennessy competed in the under 65kg Open Adult category in 2 x 16kg Long Cycle against two strong Italians and in an exciting last minute overtook one of them to cinch the Silver for Ireland. Their coach Clara O’ Connor also competed in the Open Adult in the next weight class under 75kg and was delighted to win Silver with a big PB of 91 reps with 2 x 16kg bells.

Colette Meyler put in an outstanding performance in OALC 16kg with 135 reps in a very competitive category and won Silver for her efforts and Debbie Sinnott also put in a fantastic performance with 128 reps in another very competitive category +75kg.

Leanne also competed in OALC less than an hour after her 2 x 16kg set and managed to come away with a bronze medal which was a great result considering the time elapsed since the first set!

Lauren wins All Ireland Boxing Title Lauren joined Rosslare Boxing Club last September and that fact is part of what is so incredible and inspiring in Lauren's story.

Lauren is testament to the fact that hard work, grit and determination do pay off.

From the beginning, it was clear that Lauren firstly enjoyed her training, difficult as it was! In the breaks between rounds at training, she would try and catch her breath, all the while smiling. Always polite, quick with a smile and kind and attentive to others.

It was after the Wexford Box Cup, that Lauren's training stepped up in intensity as she was clearly showing determination, attentiveness and retention of knowledge in her training. Head Coach Austin Codd, then absorbed Lauren into the group of competitive Boxers who train at a higher level of intensity. Lauren soaked up the extra challenge, never faltered and soon had her first taste of what it was like to combine training with a healthy eating regime, keeping an eye on her weight, sacrificed chocolate, sweets and her own free time in order to be at peak condition for introduction to the Bernard Dunne Wexford Co. Championships. Lauren had two fights to the final, the first girl she stopped within 20 seconds and the second within 10 seconds! A referee on the day commented that she would hardly be beaten at the Leinster Championships! Nonetheless Lauren kept her head down, newly crowned Co. Champ, and set herself to the next task.

The Leinster Championships were held in Kilkenny and Lauren had a walkover as there were no girls entered in her weight category! Not an ideal run into the All Ireland Championships, but with plenty of preparatory bouts, hard training and an amazing work ethic, Lauren was ready for the finals!

Luck of the draw saw Lauren straight through to the final, boxing out of the red corner on 17th May, at the National Stadium Dublin.

Her opponent, Muireann Bradley from Letterkenny BC, put up an excellent fight on the night, and it was very difficult for the rest of us to tell which way the result would go, so close and hard fought the contest was.

Lauren left nothing behind, spent everything she had in the ring and emerged victorious!

A first All Ireland Title for Lauren, Rosslare Boxing Club, and of course for her local community.

If there is anything that ever proved the old adage that you get out what you put in Lauren is the poster girl!

Her Club and Community are so proud and she has been honoured by so many good wishes and warm congratulations from all over Rosslare, Wexford and beyond.

2nd Prize for Rosslare Men’s Shed The Topline Shed Series 2019 The world’s biggest Men’s Sheds crafts exhibition took place at Naas Race Course in May. The Topline Shed Series saw Men’s Sheds from throughout Ireland compete for a top prize of €2,000, awarded to the winning entry by a panel of judges.

The criteria for the competition was to celebrate history with your community therefore the theme for 2019 was “Where We Come From”. Men’s sheds all around Ireland had the opportunity to submit a piece of work that depicts the heritage and history of their community such as a historic event, local landmark or a famous person from their area. This year an extra twist was added where they requested they celebrate the partnership between Topline and the IMSA which have already delivered great benefits to Men’s Sheds. This could be done by availing of a Topline voucher to purchase supplies for their creative piece or meeting with local stores in consultation with their submission.

All prizes were supplied by Topline as part of their partnership with Irish Men’s Sheds. The partnership has seen Topline supply sheds with an extensive range of DIY equipment to assist in their community projects.

Congratulations to Rosslare Men’s Shed on winning 2nd prize in the Topline Men’s Shed competition.

Their entry was based on the Rosslare/Marconi link. They were delighted to receive a cheque for €800.00 and a €300.00 voucher for Traynors of Wexford.

Summer Events 2019 – Summer holidays are just round the corner and as always, we have a fun-packed schedule in place for your enjoyment and entertainment. Old favourites such as the Teddy Bears Picnic, Puppet show, Summer Camp, and the Annual Beach party make a welcome return, and the very popular Family Bingo evenings are back throughout July and August. We are also introducing a number of new events this year; workshops by the Nutty Scientists and the Bricks 4 Kidz team will be in action at the Centre. Details of all these and other attractions can be found in our Summer Event guide which will be available in the coming weeks, online and from the usual village outlets. Access – For – All Garden Summer is showing her colours in the garden, thanks to the ongoing efforts of our wonderful volunteers. You can see further evidence of their gardening skills in the newly planted window boxes and benches placed around the centre.
