President’s ANNUAL REPORT 2021-2022

A MESSAGE FROM The President

2

I look back at Fiscal Year 2022 with gratitude. It was a good year in many ways. A particular highlight for me was the celebration of our 175th anniversary. While we have been marking this milestone throughout the calendar year, we held a special celebration on February 25 — the anniversary of our charter. For the Charter Day Convocation, we were honored to welcome back three of our four living former presidents: Drs. William Shields, Paul Pribbenow, and Robert Head. Each offered reflections later that evening during our dinner celebration. The keynote speaker for our Charter Day Ceremony was historian, author, and Emmy Award winner, Dr. Charles Branham ‘67. The next day, the presidents were joined by past and present board chairs for a private luncheon where we shared memories over many decades of this beloved institution, followed by the opening of an exhibition in the Art Gallery featuring artifacts from throughout Rockford University’s history. It was a fantastic weekend.

One of our priorities over the last many years has been to become “Rockford’s university.” While we continue to recruit students from across the United States and around the world (students from 33 states and 14 countries were enrolled during FY22), we also support students from Rockford and the surrounding communities. One tangible way we are doing this is through our participation in the Rockford Promise Program, which selects deserving graduates of Rockford Public Schools to receive full four-year tuition scholarships. Rockford University has been participating in this program for seven years with wonderful student success. Most of our Rockford Promise students are first-generation college students with significant financial need. The scholarships are made possible through donations to Rockford Promise, federal and state support, and financial aid from Rockford University. Beginning in FY22, several Rockford University donors enabled us to expand our participation in this program by funding the Rockford Promise portion of the cost. Their generosity had two benefits: it enabled students who would not be able to afford Rockford University to attend, and it will, hopefully, enable the students to graduate and build lives and careers here in Rockford.

FY22 marked the beginning of Regents First, a program that provides academic, social, and financial support to first-generation college students. As a first-generation college student myself, I understand the unique challenges students face when they do not have a family tradition of higher education attainment. While most students graduating from high school since COVID have had some learning loss, the impact on first-generation students is exacerbated by the challenges faced when navigating the transition from high school to college. This program has already had a major impact on participant success and retention, and we plan to continue and expand it into the future as funding allows.

As you review this annual report, you will read about the many successes we experienced during our 175th year, including generous support received from our alumni and friends. We enjoyed exceptional philanthropy throughout the year and heard many positive comments from donors about the good work that is happening at Rockford University. As president, I am grateful for all who choose to support our mission. I often say all who work at Rockford University are in the business of helping students achieve their dreams. It is a high calling, one that we cannot do without the partnership of our donors. Your gifts to Rockford University for academic programs, building projects, and the general fund truly change lives.

Your support of Rockford University is deeply appreciated by me, our faculty and staff, our Board of Trustees, and our students. By giving to Rockford University, you are making a difference for students and the communities in which they live and work after graduation. Thank you for partnering with us.

175 Years of COMMUNITY IMPACT

8

ROCKFORD PROMISE

In 2016, Rockford University began welcoming students on full, four-year tuition scholarships awarded by Rockford Promise, a nonprofit that aims to open doors to post-secondary education in the Rockford community for Rockford Public School District 205 graduates with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Scholars receive the financial support, encouragement, and mentorship necessary to earn a college degree.

Typically, the University welcomes four scholars every year. For each student, the school incurs an institutional support cost. However, this year, generous donors made gifts to cover that cost for four additional scholars for the next four years.

“We are grateful to these forward-thinking donors, whose gifts make it possible for us to welcome additional students,” said Eric Fulcomer, president of Rockford University. “The relationship we have developed with Rockford Promise is important and demonstrates our commitment to our community. We take pride in seeing Rockford Promise Scholars thrive at Rockford University.”

Since 2016, Rockford Promise has awarded 23 full-tuition scholarships for Scholars to attend Rockford University. The donors’ gifts reflect a strong belief that education is an important tool to help break down socio-economic barriers and strengthen the community:

“Higher education should be available to aspiring students without regard to financial ability. The Rockford Promise program helps improve the Rockford area by focusing on local students who lack resources but want to make a difference,” said one of the generous donors.

REGENTS FIRST

YOU MADE A DIFFERENCE

Young alums Bill and Susie Newkirk are proud to be counted among this special society of dedicated donors.

HELPING FIRST-GENERATION COLLEGE STUDENTS SUCCEED

BILL ’12/’13 and SUSIE ’09 NEWKIRK LINDENWOOD, IL

When Mary Ann Casico Laudicina ’91 graduated from Rockford University, she was the first person in her family to earn a bachelor’s degree. “It changed my life,” she said. As a student, Laudicina lived at home in Rockford to save money and worked while she was going to school. “I was very goal driven,” she recalled. Laudicina was influenced by an investment class she took at the university. “I didn’t have any connections in finance, but I knew with my college degree, I could enter that field,” she said.

Today Laudicina is an assistant vice president and financial advisor at Baird in Rockford. Recently she supported Rockford University’s Regents First program with a donation. “I wanted to give where I could have a direct impact,” she said.

Regents First was launched in the fall of 2021 to recruit, support, and retain first-generation college students. Participants benefit from extra support, particularly their freshman year — from receiving a stipend for materials to being paired with a financial aid coach, a life skills coach, and a peer mentor.

Dr. Karen Walker, dean of academic support at the Rockford University Center for Learning Strategies, oversees the program. “Without family knowing what college is like, a first-generation student can struggle with the non-academic aspects of higher education — like navigating financial aid or building rapport with professors. We help them thrive and earn their degree.”

Eight students were in the initial Regents First cohort last year. Laudicina generously hosted the group at her Rockford Baird office to share her own story and to talk about financial literacy — the importance of preparing a financial future. “We had great conversation,” she said. “It felt good to give back that way.”

JANE ADDAMS CENTER

INSPIRING POSITIVE CIVIC ENGAGEMENT

The spirit of alumna Jane Addams, Class of 1881, lives on today at her alma mater in many ways, including through her namesake: the Rockford University Jane Addams Center for Civic Engagement (JACCE).

Inspired by the renowned social reformer’s legacy of working for justice and equality, the center works to connect Rockford University students with opportunities and experiences that empower them to bring about positive change in their community and the world. JACCE organizes campus service projects, assists professors in creating Community-Based Learning and engaged research projects, and offers programming that cultivates an attitude of civic responsibility.

“The Center is grounded in Jane Addams’ ideals and life,” said Mary Weaks-Baxter, director of JACCE. “She believed in the importance of understanding and reaching out to people in need and taking action to help.”

An annual gift to JACCE from Rockford residents Jim ‘18H and Pam Keeling enhances the center’s impact on campus. Weaks-Baxter said, “They are incredible supporters in so many ways.”

The Keelings’ generosity makes these offerings possible:

• The addition of the JACCE Racial Justice ebook collection in Colman Library.

• Stipends for resources and supplies for two JACCE Student Fellows.

• An essay competition on Peace and Conflict Resolution to be awarded on the International Day of Peace in September.

• The annual JACCE Visiting Scholar and Artist Series.

Jim said the appreciation is mutual. “As we have worked on projects with JACCE, our appreciation for the benefits to the students and the Rockford community continues to grow. Pam and I find it very personally satisfying to financially support the JACCE programming, and we plan to continue our support for years to come.”

175 Years of SUPPORTING OUR STUDENTS

12

The mission of the Lang Wellness Center is to create a safe and supportive environment to meet the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual needs of the Rockford University community. Services include counseling, support groups, workshops and other resources.

Appointments can be scheduled by phone. In emergency situations, counselors are available for walk-in appointments.

SUPPORTING MENTAL HEALTH

EXPANDING ON-CAMPUS MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT

It is a sign of strength and courage when an individual seeks out professional assistance during a time of crisis, high stress, or emotional confusion.

At the Lang Wellness Center, Rockford University students, staff, and faculty can meet one-on-one with experienced counselors in a safe, confidential environment. Sessions are free of charge.

Recently the center was able to expand its team of counselors, thanks to a gift from a generous donor. Stephanie Garrison joined the staff over the summer and looks forward to supporting the University community.

Garrison, who received her master’s in clinical mental health counseling from Judson University, said: “My areas of interest include anxiety and depression, dialectical behavioral therapy, and trauma.”

Kristen Clarke, MSW, LCSW, director of the Lang Center, said the donation helps meet a growing need: “We are very grateful for this gift, which will encourage students to seek out the resources that we offer. Through the COVID-19 pandemic, we’ve seen increased mental health needs and awareness. Our professional and experienced counselors are here for the Rockford University community.”

The donor attended then-Rockford College for two years before transferring to another institution due to financial challenges. He went on to have a 50-year career as a clinical social worker and psychotherapist. He said: “I would have loved to have been able to graduate from Rockford College. For me, Rockford was not just an educational institution. It was safety, engagement, and personal growth. To impact the emotional well-being of students brings me great pleasure. It feels wonderful to make this gift and help someone else navigate a crisis in their life.”

13

ESPORTS

ELEVATING E SPORTS TO A NEW LEVEL

Rockford University Esports is a thriving program that has expanded each season since being launched in the fall of 2019. With 20 Regents competing as two teams, it is housed under student life and recently began offering 10 scholarships for Regents on the team. Two new alumni gifts are accelerating growth further.

Rockford University Trustee Janet Zelenka ’80, executive vice president, chief financial officer, and chief information officer at Stericycle, generously supported the Esports program’s launch. Most recently, she made another gift to support upgraded equipment, including computers, keyboards, and headsets, and scholarships for Esports.

Alex Johnson, director of student involvement and Esports, said, “Computers are to Esports what a helmet and pads are to football — necessary equipment. It makes recruiting easier if you have leading-edge equipment.”

Regents compete in two games: Rainbow 6 Siege and Overwatch. Until recently, Regents have entered only remote tournaments. However, over the next four years, an annual donation by brothers Mike Broski ’82 and Kurt Broski ‘91 will enable travel to “LAN tournaments.” The Broskis are the owners of Entré Computer Solutions in Rockford.

Mike said the value of Esports is clear. “The more skills you have in multiple IT disciplines, the better. The Esports student has to think on their feet and make decisions quickly for their team. Combined with a liberal arts education, RU graduates who play Esports are wellrounded. They are prepared to talk to both business owners and IT staff. There’s a direct path from Esports to succeeding in the tech sector.”

STUDY ABROAD

OPENING UP THE WORLD TO MORE STUDENTS

The experience of studying abroad during college can change a life — building independence, appreciation for other cultures, and sparking a lifelong love of travel and adventure.

Lee Kammerlohr ‘63 didn’t study abroad as a student when he attended Rockford University, but he knows firsthand how enriching international travel can be. After graduation, Lee backpacked for six months through Europe and then worked abroad during his long career in sales and marketing with International Harvester. “My wife, Joan, and I lived in Singapore for five years while I traveled throughout SE Asia for work. Joan served as an elementary school teacher at the Singapore American School."

Lee majored in economics and political science at Rockford during the exciting transition from the old to the new campus. “I lived for two years on the original inner city campus, then lived the next two years at the new, current campus while attending classes at the old one,” he said.

After Lee’s 40th reunion, Lee and Joan considered how they wanted to support his alma mater. “We were trying to figure out how to help,” Lee said. “We decided we wanted to assist students who hope to study internationally.” The couple decided to provide a scholarship of up to $5,000 a year for a Rockford University student who wishes to study abroad for a semester.

Throughout the process, Lee appreciated the support of the team in Rockford University’s Advancement Office. “They were extremely helpful in assisting us with developing this gift.”

WE ARE 175 YEARS STRONG

BECAUSE OF YOU. THANK YOU!

Thank you to our Rockford University alumni, students, faculty, staff, and friends for a great 20212022 academic year and incredible start to our 175th anniversary. As we reflect on all that was accomplished from then to now, we are reminded of a rich tradition of curiosity, learning, service, and community that remains strong because of support from individuals like you.

MAKE A GIFT

The stories and outcomes shared in this report were made possible because of you, and we are grateful for your continued support. Thank you for investing in our students’ success and enabling us to best support their needs as they pursue their dreams.

VOLUNTEER

During the 2021-2022 year, alumni and friends furthered their impact by serving on our Alumni Association Board, writing notes to prospective students, speaking in classes, mentoring Rockford Promise students, giving back to our-campus and community during the Jane Addams Day of Service, and more. Please visit rockford.edu/volunteer to learn more about opportunities to donate your skills and time.

If you are interested in engaging further with fellow Regents, please visit rockford.edu/volunteer to learn more and let us know how you would like to get involved with our campus community. We would love to work with you!
