Greetings from President Fulcomer As I write this, we are beginning the second half of the fall semester. It has been a good semester in many ways. We welcomed 300 new students to our traditional program and dozens more in our adult and graduate programs. Overall, our enrollment stands at 1225 students this fall, up from 1211 last fall. Our students come from 32 states and 20 countries—we are truly a global campus community.

In May, our Board of Trustees approved a new strategic plan that will map our course for the next five years, extending beyond our 175th anniversary.

The plan is structured around four thematic elements and has its roots in Liberal Arts learning. Through robust external relations that leverage the support of an engaged community of partners, we will build a thriving campus that puts students first by providing a distinct student experience in and out of the classroom. Utilizing cutting-edge instruction, and with a commitment to instructional support, the university will conduct an unceasing and ongoing assessment of all practices that will create a vibrant sense of place for all.

Already this fall, we have begun to implement the strategic plan, particularly in the areas of student

engagement and the development of partnerships with regional community colleges and businesses. We also have broken ground on the 3,800 square foot addition to the Seaver Physical Education Center, which you’ll note is featured on this issue’s cover. This $3.5 million project, funded by alumni and friends through the Rock Solid and Ready Campaign, will include an enhanced weight and fitness space and will add more classroom space for the rapidly growing physical education and exercise science programs. More details about the conclusion of our capital campaign and Seaver addition can be found on pg. 4.

All in all, we have had a great start to the academic year. If you haven’t been back to campus recently, I encourage you to make a trip to see all of the exciting things happening at Rockford University.

he campaign successfully closed on June 30, 2019, with $18.4 million raised against an original $17.3 million goal.

As a result of the Rock Solid & Ready Campaign, the University has been able to make substantial improvements in academic areas, the overall student experience, and learning spaces. Highlights of the campaign include $1 million invested in modernizations to the Starr Science Building including the purchase of new scientific equipment; naming of the Puri School of Business and the installation of the Bloomberg Business Lab trading floor; and the creation of the Student Opportunity Fund which allows for supportive funding for students to further engage in research experiences with faculty and in unique learning opportunities.

Finally, the strengthening of the University's annual fund has allowed for extensive capital investments to take place throughout campus. More than $15 million has been invested over the past six years, resulting in noticeable improvements to our infrastructure and physical plant.

President Fulcomer shares, "As Rockford University's 18th president, it has been my privilege to continue working toward the successful completion of the elements outlined in the Rock Solid & Ready Campaign. As the vision for this important work began to take shape, I was fortunate in my previous role as Vice President of Enrollment Management to have served alongside President Emeritus Robert L. Head. Ultimately, thanks to the buy-in and support of more than 2,500 donors, we were successful in a campaign that allowed for a strengthening of the Rockford University experience for students, faculty, alumni, and friends. I am grateful to everyone for their remarkable support which has had a direct impact on the University's ability to provide transformational experiences for our students."

Campaign Chair and Board of Trustee member Jim Keeling adds, "The generosity of the Rockford University community has been incredible. We can directly see how the monies raised have had an immediate and positive impact. I am so proud of this institution. A flourishing Rockford University translates directly to a stronger Rockford community; something of which we can and should all be proud."

Happening concurrently with efforts to raise funds to support specific campaign elements, several additional donors came forward to support students through the creation of endowed scholarships and bequest intentions.

Additional gifts made to endowed scholarships during the life of the campaign amounted to more than $8.7 million, including planned gifts and bequest intentions valued at approximately $875,000. In all, during the period of the campaign, gifts and pledges to the University totaled more than $27.8 million.

BREAKING GROUND The campus will undergo a significant physical change with a more than 3,800 square foot addition to the Seaver Physical Education Center. The $3.5 million project broke ground in late October. The new space will include an enhanced weight and fitness space and will add more classroom space for the rapidly growing physical education and exercise science programs. Also included in the renovation and addition is redesigned heating and cooling system that will provide for the entire building to be fully air-conditioned along with a more energyefficient heating system. Designed by local architecture firm Larson & Darby Group, this vital expansion will be an essential venue for student learning and further support enrollment growth.

President Fulcomer concludes, "We have much to celebrate and much for which to look forward. It will be exciting to watch the Seaver transformation, knowing that when complete, the space will better serve all of our students. I am grateful to all who have helped us realize our goals.”

CELEBRATING THE CLASS OF 2019 T he 165th Commencement Ceremony was held on Sunday, May 19 at the Coronado Performing Arts Center located in downtown Rockford. 350 students from 22 states and 12 countries were awarded degrees in bachelor's and master's degree programs. This year’s graduate keynote address was presented

by Bernard Sundstedt ’77. Bern officially retired on June 30, 2019, after more than 25 years of service. Through his more than four decades relationship with the University, Sundstedt has been an integral connector to individuals who represent 11 decades of University life, which became evident in his remarks.

Bern’s uniquely tailored address provided depth to the special bond Rockford University is fortunate to share with Eugene Braunwald, M.D. and alumni from the class of 1969, Drs. Marc and Janice Pfeffer. The University was honored to present Dr. Braunwald, a worldrenowned cardiologist, a pioneer in the pathophysiology of heart failure, and special friend of the University with an Honorary Doctor of Science.

Dr. Braunwald is the distinguished Hersey Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, and the founding Chair of the Thrombolysis in Myocardial Infarction Study Group (TIMI) at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. He trained at New York University School of Medicine and at the age of 25, he had already gained recognition through his published works. Six years later, he was named Chief of Cardiology and Clinical Director of the National Heart, Lung and Blood

Institute. Dr. Braunwald soon became the founding Chair of Medicine at the University of California, San Diego. From 1972 to 1996 he was Chairman of the Department of Medicine at the Brigham and Women's Hospital.

As chairman of TIMI, Dr. Braunwald joined with Drs. Marc and Janice Pfeffer to provide significant insight into the treatment of patients who suffer from acute myocardial infarction and unstable angina. Their groundbreaking work changed the trajectory of cardiac medicine. President Fulcomer provided the following remarks about Dr. Braunwald during the ceremony.

Over the past 20 years, you have generously and graciously supported Rockford University in thought, word, and deed. In addition, your lifetime of professional accomplishments are without compare; they serve as a compelling example of all that is possible in our world – an example our graduates in this and any year would do well to emulate. Your remarkable contributions to science and medicine have forever improved the human condition for people of every race, nation, creed, and ethnicity.

As a recipient of 22 honorary doctorates, we are honored and humbled that you have agreed to accept ours with pride while allowing us to join an impressive role of the most prestigious institutions around the world, whose degrees live on in your heart and adorn the walls of your office. continued on pg. 12

You are the epitome of liberal learning and embody an exemplary model of the power that exists in allowing oneself to fearlessly challenge the established construct while shattering perceived boundaries for the greater good.

Your first major paper was published in Circulation Research in July 1954, establishing you as a major force in cardiology ever since.

With more than fourteen hundred published articles to your credit, you are the most frequently cited author in cardiology by the journal ‘Science Watch.’

You have served as an editor of Harrison’s Principles of Internal Medicine for 12 editions, and as the founding editor of Heart Disease, now in its 11th Edition - the two most influential textbooks in cardiac medicine. Your contributions to cardiovascular research through your 60-year commitment to Thrombolysis In Myocardial Infarction studies are simply unparalleled, and your findings have resulted in multiple life-saving therapeutic approaches.

Your paradigm-defining discovery that the size of a myocardial infarction could be reduced by favorably altering the balance between oxygen supply and demand set the stage for modern coronary care management.

Your accomplishments are so significant; it is impossible to express in words here today the depth to which you have impacted our world. But of all your endeavors, we at Rockford University are most thankful for the serendipitous circumstances that some 40 years ago brought you into the lives of Rockford University Alumni Dr. Janice Sikorski Pfeffer, and her husband, Dr. Marc Pfeffer.

The SAVE and CARE trials that you conducted with them are regarded as two of the most influential cardio/medical trials in the last century and have saved countless patients.

It is a wonderful story of love, commitment, and compassion that will be given full treatment by our commencement speaker, Mr. Bern Sundstedt. Dr. Braunwald, you have done so much for Rockford University and the world of cardiac medicine; we thank you and would like at this time to appropriately recognize you.

Rockford University and Rock Valley College joined in a formal collaboration in 2015 with Rockford Promise, committing to provide tuition remission to selected area students. In 2016, Alondra and Jennifer received the first two full-time four year scholarships, along with three other students who received scholarships to attend Rock Valley College.

Rockford Promise is a non-profit, location-based scholarship program that seeks to improve the local economy by offering full-tuition scholarships to deserving graduates of Rockford Public Schools in District 205. Modeled after other Promise programs around the nation, the organization seeks to increase educational attainment in the Rockford community while providing economic incentives for residents and businesses to locate in the Rockford region. In addition to full-tuition college scholarships, Rockford Promise also supports scholars with various community mentorship opportunities, academic advising, and meaningful social connections to ensure they not only earn their degrees but also gain a strong foundation toward a successful career.

When asked what it meant to her to have this opportunity, Jennifer states, “Even though I knew I wanted to go to college, graduating high school was one of the highest goals I had for myself and look at where I am today, I am about to graduate from college in less than a year. I would not have been able to achieve this without the help of everyone that has been there for me, including the members of the Rockford Promise committee, Rockford University staff and faculty, and my family.”

Jennifer, a human development major, quickly learned the value of finding ways to engage outside of the classroom. She participated in the Alan Hutchcroft Alternative Spring Break, showcases her athletic talents on the Women’s Soccer Team, and served as a Welcome Week leader for incoming students — this all while maintaining excellent grades and being named to the Dean’s and Distinguished Scholars lists. Planning for her future after graduation, she is committed never to stop learning and hopes to stand out in her profession by attending a graduate school counseling program.

For Alondra, an honor student with an outstanding academic record, will graduate with a major in biochemistry and a minor in French, the significance of being able to attend college with the financial

burdens lifted is evident. She shares, “I am grateful that Rockford Promise gave me the chance to attend Rockford University. Thanks to this scholarship, I have been able to make the most out of my college career by searching for endless opportunities to grow as a student and a member of this community." Alondra has demonstrated this gratitude by not hesitating to become involved in clubs and organizations on campus, including several Global Affairs events, serving as a Student Government Association representative and Welcome Week leader. Alondra has participated twice in the Alan Hutchcroft Alternative Spring Break, played all four years for the soccer team, and is a member of the Student Government Association. An experience Alondra cites as one of the most meaningful was being able to visit Paris, France in January of 2018, as part of her French Language and Culture Abroad course and with the help of the University’s Student Opportunity Fund.

Alondra looks forward to continuing her education and hopes to one day work toward her Masters of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree.

Rockford University’s commitment to Rockford Promise has continued to increase since 2016, with an investment of more than $220,000. Four new Rockford Promise scholars came to Rockford University this fall, joining their eight counterparts.

With growing community support, the program is living up to its moniker, truly providing great promise for area students and outstanding soon-to-be alumni in Jennifer and Alondra.

ALUMNI AWARDS CONGRATULATIONS TO THE 2019 ALUMNI ASSOCIATION AWARD RECIPIENTS

ach year the Alumni Association Board gives several awards to alumni and long-time university supporters. These awards are presented annually during the All-Alumni Dinner at Homecoming and Reunion each fall, this year held on October 4.

Alumna/Alumnus of the Year Award – Honors an alumna and/or alumnus for invaluable service to the Alumni Association and Rockford University during the past year. One award is given each year.

Scott Kaiser ’86 – Scott is a financial advisor with Savant Capital Management, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional, Accredited Investment Fiduciary® (AIF®), and a Chartered Retirement Plan SpecialistSM (CRPS®). He serves as past President of the Discovery Center Board, volunteers on the Woodlawn Arts Academy Board and the St. Rita Parish Finance Council. He continually gives back to Rockford University and

has had a tremendous impact on the Women’s Golf program, new to Rockford University as of this fall, as a volunteer coach for the team. He was also instrumental in supporting this year’s Regent Golf Playday.

Award of Distinction – Given to Alumni for fulfilling the ideals of Rockford University and bringing honor and esteem to the University in one or more of the following ways; through their vision, dedication, and initiative in a purposeful endeavor; by their responsive and sustained efforts in community improvements; or by their notable achievements in a profession. Up to three awards are given each year.

Tom Clinton ’70/’76 & Linda Clinton ’72/’75 – Tom and Linda Clinton founded First Love International Ministries In 2001. Tom serves as President/CEO and Linda as the Director of Children’s Ministries.

In his role as President, Tom oversees First Love’s International headquarters as well as a full time

staff comprised of over 300 U.S. and national staff workers residing in the countries of: the Philippines, Nepal, Indonesia, India, the Czech Republic, Taiwan, Ukraine, Malawi, Peru, Colombia, Kenya, and Peru.

Jacqueline Ann DeVries ’85/’91 – Jacqueline earned both her undergraduate and graduate degrees from Rockford University. She taught in the Byron School District, Harlem School District, and at Rockford University in the Master of Arts in Teaching program.

Now retired from 30+ years in teaching, she serves as the Board President & Outreach Coordinator for Unity of Rockford and gives back to many organizations, including Children’s Home and Aid, Rockford Rescue Mission, Habitat for Humanity, Rosecrance, and many more.

Wester Wuori ’92 – Wester Wuori is Chief of Staff for the City of Rockford and has more than 24 years of experience in corporate and political communications, marketing and public relations and 17 years of staff supervisory experience. He has served with various community organizations in the area including Lifescape Community Services, Golden Apple Foundation, I Bike Rockford, Transform Rockford, Discovery Center Museum, The Rockford University Alumni Association, Westminster Presbyterian Church, and Next Rockford.

Karl C. Williams Award– Presented to an Alumnus for his constancy, devotion and a long history of meritorious service to Rockford University. One award may be given each year.

Ron Hoffman ’69 – A lifelong finance professional now retired from his role as Chief Operating Officer for Peregrine Capital Management, Ron continues to be a strong connector and advocate on behalf of Rockford University. This former basketball and golf team member makes it a point to maintain close friendships from his time on campus through various trips, events, and visits to campus.

Mary Ashby Cheek Award – Given to a past or present non-alumni member of the Rockford University community for enriching the university experience of many by exemplifying the ideals of the University. One award is given each year.

Dr. Kip Knight & Eileen V. Knight – Inspired by Kip’s mother, Maxine Rosella Burritt Knight, class of 1934, and her affinity for Rockford College, Dr. Kip Knight

& Eileen V. Knight continually exemplify the ideals of Rockford University through their selfless support.

Both Kip and Eileen are retired lifelong educators who value higher education. These values come to life through the endowed scholarship created in memory of Kip’s mother, their membership in the Mary Ashby Cheek Society, annual visits back to campus, and many other countless ways.

Outstanding Young Alumni Award – Given to an alumna/us who has finished her/his Rockford University tenure within the last 15 years and fulfils the ideals of Rockford University by vision, dedication, and initiative in a purposeful endeavor, or through responsible and sustained efforts in the improvements of a community, or a notable achievement in a profession, thus having brought honor and esteem to Rockford University. One award is given each year.

Julia Steiner Halsted ’13 – With more than a decade of experience working directly with public governing boards, Julia is a recognized figure in local government. As Deputy Director of Operations at Region 1 Planning Council, she serves as chief of staff managing daily operations, organizational development, professional services, communications, and legislative affairs. Julia is a current member of Govern for Impact, Rockford Chamber of Commerce Government Affairs Council, and Transform Illinois.

Talcott Cross Award – The oldest Rockford University award, the Talcott Cross is awarded to an Alumna for her constancy, devotion and a long history of meritorious service to Rockford University. One award is given each year.

Cindy Bugajski Sundstedt ’78 – Cindy currently serves as Director of Trade Settlements and Receivables at Cimco Resources and has served as Secretary for the Roscoe Township Cemetery Board since 2000. Already an enthusiastic supporter and advocate for Rockford University, Cindy took on additional responsibilities for the better part of 25 years, standing by her husband’s side during his time as VP of Advancement for Rockford University.

Through the countless events she has attended, many connections and positive relationships she maintains with alumni, and so much more, Cindy continues to display her constancy and devotion to Rockford University.

he University announced in June that competitive eSports would be added to its growing list of student activities, clubs, and NCAA sports, beginning with the start of the fall semester. Excitement about the addition of eSports immediately followed the announcement and interest quickly exceeded initial expectations to begin with one full team. Within a few weeks of the start of the academic year, three teams consisting of 18 players were up and running. Play takes place in the new state-of-the-art eSports arena located in the Burpee Student Center. The arena features 16 new gaming PCs completely powered by MSI with easy access for any RU student to jump in and play a few games.

Why eSports? Vice President for Student Life, Dr. Randy Worden says, “Competitive eSports gaming is growing exponentially in our region and across the country. Many area high-schools have teams and the local school district is considering the creation of a joint gaming center where their

students can train and compete. Prospective and current students have shown substantial interest in being able to compete at the collegiate level. We’re incredibly excited to add eSports to our campus and provide yet another way for students to have access to diverse opportunities that enhance their overall collegiate experience.”

Rockford University plans to establish and maintain collegiate level competitive teams across a variety of games compete in the CS Starleague, considered the premier platform for collegiate level League of Legends competition. Overwatch and Rainbow Six: Siege were also added to accommodate student interest. As the program continues to take shape and evolve, Rockford University is committed to developing additional teams for other competitive eSports (i.e. Rocket League and Counter-Strike).

Teams and players at Rockford University will have the opportunity to stream gameplay, compete inter-collegiately, and play against athletes from

across the world, all under the official banner of the Rockford University eSports team.

An important goal of the eSports program is to offer students real-world advantages. In addition to competitive gaming, students will have opportunities to gain experience in graphic and media design, social media branding and marketing, event planning and management, and communications and broadcasting.

All eSports team members will have numerous opportunities to engage within the greater campus community in important ways that will be an asset to their futures. eSports Coordinator and Graduate Assistant Hall Director Clay Duffy ’17 adds, “While some people may think of eSports as only consisting of competitive video gaming, there is virtually limitless potential for students and athletes learn new skills, make new friends, and express themselves in creative ways that ultimately heighten their educational experience.”

Assistant Professor, Puri School of Business Mandolen Mull, Ph.D., was the recipient of the 2019 Excellence in Teaching Award. One nominator stated, “She makes sure we can easily connect everything we learn in class to the real working world, and she is open about giving us tips and tools to become sustainably successful in our careers.” Other nominators noted that she consistently will go above and beyond to help students realize their full potentials. This can be seen in her passion for teaching, for her students, and for the University. She will also make herself available at all times in order to assist her students, in addition to demonstrating her support for them by attending their extracurricular activities outside of the classroom.

Awarded each May, nominations are submitted by faculty, staff, students and alumni. A five-member selection committee evaluates nominations and selects the winners. The criteria for the award are knowledge of his/her discipline, respect for students, creative course development, advising, and campus leadership.

Hendry's nomination recognizes his costume design talent for the musical comedy production of A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder by Porchlight Music Theatre that took the stage in Chicago in January through March of 2019.

According the www.jeffawards.org, the Jeff Awards have been honoring local outstanding theatre artists for their theatre talent annually since they were established in 1968. The Jeff Awards is committed to celebrating the vitality of the Chicago area's theatre scene by recognizing excellence through its recommendations, awards, and honors.

Associate Professor of Physics Deepshikha Shukla, Ph.D., along with adjunct instructor of physics and math Dr. Shaleen Shukla, participated in the Emory Tibet Science Initiative this past summer. Through the program, they spent 10 days and six hours each day, teaching an interactive physics course at a Buddhist monastery in India.

Dr. Shukla shares, “Teaching the monks was an awesome experience. Their eagerness to learn, debate and contribute was refreshing!” According to Emory University, the ultimate goal of the EmoryTibet Science Initiative is to build a bridge between two complementary systems of knowledge by educating future scientific collaborators who can contribute to new discoveries in the science of mind and body. ETSI is designed to give Tibetan monastics new tools for understanding the world, while also providing them with fresh perspectives on how to employ and adapt time-tested, Buddhist, contemplative methodologies for the relief of suffering in the contemporary world. Additionally, scientists and science educators are encouraged to learn more about the Buddhist science of mind and what it can contribute to the understanding of human emotions, the nature of consciousness, and integrative approaches to health and well-being.

Most recently, in June 2019 in Lyon, France, Dr. Ogle won the “Best English Speaking Ph.D. Student Paper” award on her paper titled The Interaction of Organization Development and Change on Social Media at the ISEOR International Conference with the Academy of Management. This paper is now eligible for inclusion in the Recherches en Sciences de Gestion-Management Sciences-Ciencias de gestion journal. ISEOR is a leading research center in Europe with 125 researchers, lecturers and Ph.D. students from around the world.

Professor of Philosophy and Department Chair Matt Flamm, Ph.D., was selected last spring to present the 'Last Lecture' on his talk titled "It's All Connected" on Tuesday, April 16, 4 p.m. in Fisher Memorial Chapel, 5050 E. State St., Rockford.

The Last Lecture is part of the Spring Forum series at the University and provides an opportunity for students to nominate a member of the faculty to deliver his or her 'last lecture' as the University nears the end of its academic year.

Professor Flamm was chosen based on nominations from students. To show how "It's All Connected" Dr. Flamm will discuss love, work, teaching, and sing a few songs. He earned his AS from Portland Community College, his BA from State University of New York at Stony Brook, his MA from Texas A&M University, and his doctorate from Southern Illinois University Carbondale. He has enjoyed teaching at Rockford University since 2004. In addition to academics, Matthew writes, records, and performs music which, as his presentation will showcase, goes hand in hand with his love of philosophy.

The Last Lecture series at Rockford University was inspired by Randy Pausch. Dr. Pausch was a professor at Carnegie Mellon University from 1997 to his death in 2008. Before his death he was asked to give the students his Last Lecture.

Verstynen Trust; honoring Rockford University faculty members for their years of teaching and example of lifelong learning.

Dr. Flamm will deliver his invited paper, "A Successful Failure: Royce’s Feud of Oakfield Creek Revisited” at the "Douglas MacDonald Conference on the Life and Work of (Classical American Philosopher) Josiah Royce, His Colleagues and Students." The conference takes place on October 18-20, 2019 at Vanderbilt Univerisity, Nashville, Tennessee. Dr. Flamm will also be chairing a session at the conference.

Associate professor of Classical Studies Stephanie Quinn, Ph.D., presented her talk titled “History and Lies: Ancient and Modern, Homer to Trump” at a University Club event last spring.

Her talk featured a discussion on the first Western poet, Homer and the issue of distinguishing lies from truth. Dr. Quinn told of Homers’ Odysseus and the “stories” that were believed even when he was fabricating, as well as Plato and how he thought only reason should persuade, and finally of the Roman poet Vergil and how he has been used to justify imperialism and fascism in addition to

resistance to them. Dr. Quinn teaches a full range of topics in Classical Studies, but her focus remains on the literature and history of the late Roman Republic and in particular the works of Vergil.

She is especially interested in interdisciplinary topics and the reception of the classical corpus in subsequent centuries, including its uses and misuses in modern times. A few of her publications include "Why Vergil? A Collection of Interpretations.

Bolchazy-Carducci Publishers" (2000) and several articles in process, including on gender in Vergil’s works and on Hermann Broch’s mid-20th-century novel, “The Death of Virgil.”

Isabel Ross Abbott Professor of History and Women’s Studies Catherine Forslund, Ph.D., spoke on “Woodstock…Wow…50th Anniversary” on several separate occasions this year including presentations to Rockford Rotary Club and the University Club’s Forbes University. Just as the original 1969 Woodstock Music and Arts Fair (a.k.a. Woodstock) was a combination of things, Dr. Forslund among others in attendance explored the festival from multiple perspectives. These anniversary shows helped to illustrate the power of memory and our continued fascination with the Sixties.

Dr. Forslund was also interviewed and featured in the Northwest Quarterly Summer 2019 issue for

the article “Homegrown Suffragists and the 19th Amendment.”

Dr. Forslund teaches the survey of United States History; U.S. diplomatic, African-American, and women’s history; courses in Modern Latin America and the Vietnam War era; and will soon be introducing Modern Asia and Modern China history courses. Her numerous contributions were recognized in 2004 when she received the Excellence in Teaching and Campus Leadership Award. Off-campus she represents Rockford University in two local Teaching American History Grant programs, one in the Rockford city school district and another with the Woodstock school district, where she helps plan and present programming for training U.S. history teachers in middle and secondary schools.

Professor of Philosophy Stephen Hicks, Ph.D., has a new publication, Explaining Postmodernism: Skepticism and Socialism from Rousseau to Foucault, that was written on a sabbatical provided

by Rockford University. The book has gained traction including several strong scholarly reviews, 14 editions, and foreign translations. This attention has now led to several speaking invitations over the last few years in Europe, South America, and now Australia. Including his most recent talks while in Australia last March on “Adventures in Postmodernism.” Dr. Hicks is Professor of

Philosophy and Executive Director of the Center for Ethics and Entrepreneurship. He is the author of three books and has been published widely in academic journals such as Review of Metaphysics and Business Ethics Quarterly, as well as more popular outlets such as The Wall Street Journal.

During his recent talks in Australia, Dr. Hicks spoke on postmodernism, and what makes it attractive, why it's dangerous to Western culture, how it has evolved and mutated into 3rd-generation postmodernism since its first generation in Foucault and Derrida, its connections to neo-Marxism, role in the culture wars, campus battles over free speech, political correctness, intellectual diversity, and the rise of Antifa. In addition to this, he highlighted other political movements that are adopting postmodernist strategies and what the solutions are or it all.

Visiting Assistant Professor in Sociology and Criminal Justice Colleen Kennedy successfully defended her dissertation titled “Evaluating U.S. Counterterrorism Policy on Domestic Terrorism Using the Global Terrorism Database” this past summer, completing her doctorate in public policy and administration with a specialization in terrorism, mediation, and peace from Walden University.

Her areas of interest include terrorism, peace and conflict studies, security studies, ethno-religious political violence, in particular, the Northern Ireland conflict, public policy, military sociology, extreme deviance, race and ethnicity, gender, substance use, and social stratification. Dr. Kennedy is a frequent guest speaker on terrorism and political violence within the Rockford University community and beyond.

Dr. Kennedy also serves as the secretary of the board of directors for the 501(c)(3) non-profit organization Sgt. P’s Lapghans for Veterans.

Her mother, Charlotte Kennedy, created the organization, in honor of Dr. Kennedy’s grandfather, Walter Petroske who served in France and Belgium during WWII. The organization provides handmade crochet and knit ‘lapghans’ (blankets that fit on the

lap) to veterans. Since the start of the organization on Flag Day in 2014, 2,884 complimentary lap blankets have been distributed to veterans and active-duty military personnel. The group also distributes hats, gloves, scarves, and mittens, which have become especially important for the homeless veterans. Since her mother’s stage I invasive breast cancer diagnosis in May 2018, Dr. Kennedy has remained committed to the organization's promise.

of Ethnology, History of Religions and Gender Studies at Stockholm University sponsored the conference. Presenters came from 20 countries. Dr. Weaks-Baxter’s talk is titled: 'How Smooth Must be the Language of the Whites': Chief Black Hawk and the Reinterpretation of Native American-White Relations in the U.S. Midwest."

Talk summary: Overlooking the Rock River in Northern Illinois stands a 48-foot statue of Chief Black Hawk, a leader of the Sauk tribe that was pushed westward out of Illinois and Wisconsin during the Black Hawk War of the 1830s.

Ostensibly crafted to honor the "eternal Indian," the monument displaces the historical record of white imposition on Native American lands with a benign representation of Black Hawk as the "Noble Savage." Designed by Chicago artist Lorado Taft, and holding claim to being the second tallest concrete statue in the world, the monument portrays Black Hawk as a contemplative, proud care-taker, who still overlooks the river that was once the territory of his people. The presentation examined the historical context for the Sauk tribe, the creation of the statue in 1911 at the Eagle's Nest Art Colony, and the current status of the statue as a key tourist

FACULTY & STUDENT NOTES attraction, and argued that the statue is an example of traumatic erasure. Few marks of Native American culture remain in the area and those that do remain commodify and commercialize that image.

Unfortunately, the Black Hawk site is not unlike many others in the U.S. Despite claims that sites like the Black Hawk statue attempt to heal an historical trauma, instead, Dr. Weaks-Baxter argues, those who make that claim instead refuse to reckon with that trauma, censoring a heritage of darkness and rewriting the narrative of a dark and bloody past.

Today visitors can tour original 19th-century buildings of Toynbee Hall, while the social services operate nearby. Entering the historic buildings, I was thrilled first to see a statue of a standing woman and child holding hands with the words “For Jane Addams“ inscribed in the base, acknowledging the strong link between Addams and the settlement house.

LOOKING FOR JANE

Today as it did in the 19th Century, Toynbee Hall works to break down barriers for those in poverty and against societal systems that keep people poor and provides economically stressed individuals with tools to be self-sufficient.

"On a recent trip to England for a conference, I was fortunate to make a side trip into London where I visited Toynbee Hall, the settlement house that inspired Jane Addams to found Hull-House in Chicago in 1889. After graduating from Rockford Female Seminary, now Rockford University, Addams traveled to Europe, where she saw the extreme poverty of the East End of London, an area ridden with crime and only a few years later the site of the Jack the Ripper murders. In the East End, Addams visited Toynbee Hall where she was

Like Addams’ Hull-House, Toynbee Hall brings people together across divides. My stop at Toynbee was a reminder that many of the world’s social problems are ones that human beings have created because of our failure to empathize—to cross that line between ourselves and others. Addams—in her words--reminds me of the necessity of crossing that divide: “The good we secure for ourselves is precarious and uncertain until it is secured for all of us and incorporated into our common life.”

OUTSTANDING, COMMITTED AND PASSIONATE IN AND OUT OF THE CLASSROOM

W

hitney Reed '17 was selected to receive the Illinois Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (IACTE) Outstanding Beginning Teacher Award at the ACTE/ IATEPC Spring Joint Conference and Award Ceremony held on Tuesday, April 9 in Springfield, Ill. The Rockford University Education department nominated Whitney for her many accomplishments and her dedication to her students and the profession. Whitney was presented her nomination letter, along with an official invite to attend

by Welsh Elementary School Principal Blake Hand at a special event in March. Local media also covered Whitney’s letter presentation.

Reed graduated from Rockford University in December 2017 with a degree in Elementary Education. Soon after graduation, Whitney began teaching second grade at the elementary school she attended as a child. She takes a hands-on approach to her teaching.

When her students were learning about communities, Whitney brought the mayor of Rockford to speak to her class. During a unit on matter, she took her students to the Discovery Center where they experimented with slime. They raised caterpillars to learn about life cycles and created a Macy’s parade of their own to demonstrate their STEM knowledge.

Whitney quickly became an active member of her faculty. She participates in many professional development opportunities, ranging from Growth Mindset to Google Classroom. She also participates in several committees, including the social committee, the building committee, and the courtyard committee, created to turn the school courtyard into a butterfly garden complete with reading areas.

As a life-long resident of Rockford, it was always Whitney’s dream to teach in the community where she was raised. She is making that dream come true: giving back to the community she loves through her innovative and engaging teaching practices.

resident Eric W. Fulcomer, Ph.D., announced on October 3, 2019 the appointment of Michael A. Perry, Ph.D., as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, effective immediately. Dr. Perry has served as interim provost and vice president since August 2018.

In this role, Dr. Perry is responsible for the integrity and implementation of all academic priorities for the University. Dr. Perry will also work closely with the University's three college deans, department heads, faculty, and staff to ensure that the University's educational programs align with the institutional mission and strategic priorities and are delivered with the highest possible quality.

Dr. Perry states, "I am excited to have the distinct honor to not only build upon the work done by my predecessors but also to continue work on initiatives started while serving as interim. I have been part of Rockford University for more than a decade, and I continue to be amazed at the good, hard work done by students, faculty, and staff. Moreover, I have grown to love Rockford and the greater Rockford area. I see the limitless possibilities and potential for the University as we seek more innovative and concrete ways to partner with our community and move forward together. We do this while at once honoring the legacy of alumna Jane Addams, as well as recognizing and supporting the talent and energy of our youth who are growing up in our region today."

President Fulcomer adds, "It is clear to me that Michael has garnered much support over his decade-plus of service to Rockford University from faculty and staff, and the students to whom he is so dedicated. I appreciate the significant body of work he has undertaken as Interim Provost, including overseeing the restructuring of the Center for Learning strategies as well as laying the groundwork for a comprehensive academic assessment plan. Mike has similarly demonstrated valuable leadership in his work with the Executive Council. Perry began his tenure at Rockford University in 2008 upon completing his Ph.D. at Arizona State University.

He previously served as an Associate Professor of English; Chair of the English Department; Dean, College of Arts & Humanities; and as the NCAA Faculty Athletic Representative before beginning his appointment as Interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs in the fall of 2018. His interests in teaching and research include African American literature, popular culture, and creative writing. He spearheaded an annual "Read Aloud of Black American Voices" in honor of Black History Month. Michael regularly presents at the Popular Culture and American Culture Association National Conference.

In addition to presenting in areas as wide-ranging as black culture, horror, and rhetoric, he also chaired a panel of three Rockford University undergraduate students who presented work that stemmed from his class in graphic novels and the literary tradition.

Before obtaining his doctorate of philosophy in English from Arizona State, where he also taught as a teaching associate for five years, Perry taught for two years in the Minnesota community college system in a variety of settings, including the prison system. Michael obtained his master of arts in English from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn., and his bachelor of arts in English with minors in math and classics from Augustana College in Sioux Falls, S.D. Perry lives in Loves Park with his wife, Karen, who is a registered nurse, and three children: Caleb, Julian, and Zoey.

Nicole Clewer was named the Director of Annual Giving and Alumni Engagement in June. Her strong background in non-profit and higher education work includes working at the YMCA of Rock River Valley and Beloit College where she served almost three years in their Development & Alumni Relations Office. Starting in the position of Assistant Director of Alumni and Parent Relations & Annual Support, she eventually transitioned into the role of Associate Director of Development and Alumni Outreach, where she focused on enhancing alumni engagement and increasing annual support.

From organizing events like annual homecoming and reunions, regional gatherings, and recognition events, to developing and implementing annual giving strategies through direct mail, e-solicitations, crowd-funding campaigns, and personal solicitations, Nicole truly enjoys helping others align their passions with philanthropy. She is thrilled to be back in Rockford and part of the Rockford University team.

Vice President for Advancement Stephen Kull began his duties in July, coming to Rockford from Central Michigan University where he served as Associate Vice President for Advancement. Kull will serve as Rockford University's senior development officer and strategist for the Advancement Division, and as chief development adviser to the President, the Trustees, and other University officials on all matters involving current or potential philanthropic support.

"Stephen's impressive background in all areas of donor engagement and development, specifically within higher education, will be of tremendous benefit to Rockford University," said Fulcomer. "His proven experience in growing and deepening relationships with alumni, outside donors and the greater community will enhance the University's ability to provide additional resources that support a stronger educational experience for our students. I am extremely pleased to welcome Stephen to our leadership team and look forward to working with him in growing our philanthropic efforts."

As Vice President for Advancement, Kull oversees all areas of Advancement which includes Alumni Engagement, Planned Giving, Major Gifts, Corporate and Foundation Gifts, Data and Gift Management, Prospect and Grant Research, and Marketing & Communications.

He brings nearly 15-years of higher education experience to his new role. At Central Michigan, he successfully managed fundraising efforts for the "Fire up for Excellence" $100 million campaign, the largest in the institution's history. Kull previously served director of development - gift planning, senior director of development and interim assistant vice president for advancement at Eastern Illinois University, as well as in other development roles at Blackburn College and Concordia Seminary in St. Louis.

A native of Texas, Kull earned his bachelor's degree in sociology from Texas A&M University and has completed several advanced leadership and management certifications from the University of Notre Dame, University of Michigan, Purdue University and Texas A& M University. He and his wife, Angela, have four young children and are excited to join the Rockford community.

Rockford University welcomed Michael Quinn as Interim Vice President for Enrollment Management. in July. Mike’s professional experience encompasses an impressive mix of corporate communications, strategic planning, brand development, marketing, institutional advancement and enrollment management. He has most recently led the enrollment efforts of Randolph College in Lynchburg, Virginia.

Mike earned his bachelors of arts in English from the State University of New York College at Buffalo, and his master of arts in English from the State University of New York at Binghamton. He is a Ph.D. candidate in Higher Education Leadership for Changing Populations at Notre Dame of Maryland University in Baltimore.

Mike will serve as interim through June 2020.

riminal Justice made its debut this fall as a new major degree offering. The degree is part of the University's Sociology and Criminal Justice department, which is part of the College of Social Sciences, Commerce and Education. Criminal Justice previously was offered as a concentration within the Sociology major.

The Criminal Justice degree is designed to provide students with a wide range of opportunities including academic internships at local agencies or organizations within the Rockford community and beyond by preparing students for a variety of careers, such as law enforcement (local, state, and federal), probation and parole, pre-trial services, law, homeland security, forensic science, fish and game wardens, and detectives and criminal investigators.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of police and detectives is projected to grow seven percent from 2016 to 2026. The continued need for public safety is expected to lead to new openings for officers.

Chair of the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice Professor Lynn Newhart, Ph.D., says, "In this program, the all-university and collegial requirements ensure a strong liberal arts foundation for a more specialized program of study. Our Criminal Justice curriculum takes an interdisciplinary approach to criminal justice incorporating courses from criminal justice, political science, and sociology." She also notes that the interdisciplinary approach is important since it offers appeal to

students who are interested in criminal justice careers other than law enforcement. A sampling of classes includes: Introduction to Criminal Justice, Transnational Organized Crime, Homeland Security, Terrorism, Law and Society, Constitutional Law: Rights of the Accused, Juvenile Delinquency, and Criminology. Dr. Newhart adds that students will gain knowledge and skills in research, writing, public policy, criminology, corrections, juvenile delinquency, terrorism, and transnational organized crime.

Rockford Police Department's Assistant Deputy Chief Michael Dalke consulted with the University and Dr. Newhart to provide additional expertise and guidance on shaping the criminal justice program.

"Having this program at Rockford University will benefit the institution, the students and community in many ways," states Dalke. "Knowing the challenges that are presented in Rockford and having a deeper understanding of the community will set these students at an advantage. Building the relationships with the community and hands-on learning through local internships with RPD and others, along with a strong degree curriculum, will help prepare students for a successful career upon graduation."

ockford University announced a new partnership with Rock Valley College designed to provide a seamless path for adult students to complete a business management bachelor's degree at Rockford University through its Puri School of Business. The Rockford Ready program enables anyone who has completed an Associate's of Applied Science (A.A.S) to easily transfer their degree credentials for full-credit and earn a Bachelor's of Science in Management Studies in as little as 24-months through a combination of online and hybrid courses.

Rockford University and Rock Valley College have long-standing transfer articulation agreements for students who begin their college studies at RVC to earn Associates of Art (A.A.) or Associates of Science (A.S.) degrees, which are degrees designed to prepare students for transfer into a four-year college. Rockford Ready differs in that it is

customized more specifically for working individuals who have an A.A.S. degree. A.A.S. degrees are more career-focused programs that provide specific skill sets and certifications to go directly into the workforce.

"We are listening closely to what our area business and industry leaders are saying is needed to help their employees acquire the necessary skills and education they need for continued leadership and management growth," said Rockford University President Dr. Eric Fulcomer. "Rockford Ready is an excellent example of how two organizations can come together to provide a creative and viable continuing education option to specifically addresses those needs. I'm impressed with our respective faculty and administrators who worked side-by-side to design this innovative bachelor's completion curriculum. We are excited to launch the program here today with our RVC colleagues."

Kristyn King ’89 has been named interim athletic director at The College of Wooster, effective August 1.

Harold R. Corson Jr. ’58 died in January of 2019 following a long illness. Harold was the husband of Barbara Norris Corson ’59 and was known to his friends as “Skip".

Dawn Gile ’02 has been selected to serve as the presidentelect of Military Spouse JD Network, a bar association for military spouse attorneys. MSJDN supports military spouses in the legal profession by advocating for licensing accommodations for military spouse attorneys, encouraging the hiring of military spouses, and providing a network of military spouse attorneys. Her Husband, SGM Daniel J. Gile, is a native of Rockford and has been serving active duty in the U.S. Army for more than 20 years. Dawn graduated from Loyola University Chicago School of Law in 2006. Currently, she is a member of RU’s alumni association board. She is also presently a partner with MacDonald Law Group, LLC in Maryland, and is licensed to practice law in Illinois, Maryland and DC.

Fred Fuld ’74 has written two books that were recently published: Investment Trivia and Real Estate Trivia. He also just finished producing and directing a TV sitcom about telemarketers called Phonies.

Rev. Tanya (TJ) Tyler ’81 has been called to serve as pastor of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Ruidoso, New Mexico.

Mary Osborn ’87 was welcomed by Hesse Martone’s Firm as the new Illinois Office and Special Counsel.

Prior to joining Hesse Martone, Mary was assistant general counsel for a multi-national law firm. She was also in a private practice as one of the founding partners of an Illinois management side labor firm.

Mary is admitted to practice in the State of Illinois and before the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois and the United States District Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit.

Joyce D’arcy ’88 received her provisional license and is working at Warhill High School in Williamsburg, VA. Joyce continues to teach diving in Newport News and Hampton. Her youngest daughter, Danielle, is attending Virginia Wesleyan University studying Business and Education, her middle daughter is acting, and her oldest daughter is an RN who has a four-year old daughter named Lola. Her son Seamus works at Goodwill, and inspired her to write her book Hope for a Lifetime with Autism in hopes to provide encouragement to parents who have children with autism and to inform those who do not.

Blaze Ferrar ’02 published a stand-alone excerpt of her novel-in-progress in the literary magazine titled Crack the Spine.

Devon LaRosa ’06 is the Madison School District principal for La Follette High School and began transitioning into this role in May 2019. Devon was previously the principal at the Beloit School District’s Cunningham Intermediate School starting in 2017, has been the principal at two Illinois schools, and also has worked as a history teacher in Rockford, Ill. Ann Gilman ’06 has been working as a science teacher at Calhoun High School since 2002. Her focus has been to make science a fun subject to learn for her students, who are in 9th, 11th and 12th grades. However, her mission goes beyond teaching just science. Ann told a West Central Reporter, “I want my students to learn – about science, about life and about what it takes to be successful.”In addition to teaching, Ann has volunteered as a coach for multiple sports in her community since she was 16. She also currently oversees Calhoun High’s National Honor Society members.

Julia Schade ’08 was hired in spring 2019 to be the conductor, assistant music director, keyboard player, and “lady in waiting” for the U.S. premier of the Olivier-awardwinning West End (London) show, Six, about the six wives of Henry VIII. The show is headed from Chicago to Broadway. Julia has been invited to travel with the show to Boston, St. Paul, and Broadway, where she will continue conduct, music director and play keyboards.

Kyle Saunders ’11/’17 was appointed by Rockford Mayor Tom McNamara to become the director of Rockford’s Public Works Department and is currently serving as Water Superintendent.

CLASS NOTES Daniel Switzer ’11 was recently cast as a “vacation swing” in Broadway’s Mean Girls, and has been onstage in the show since the end of June. As a ‘swing’ ensemble member, Daniel had to learn the tracks for every male and female ensemble member of the show. Daniel is expected to be with the show until its close.

Sobhi Baghdadi ’15, financial planner with Savant Capital Management, earned the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERTM professional certification.

Martesha Brown ’15, a lifelong Rockford resident, was recently hired by the Rockford Area Convention & Visitors Bureau. She oversees the development and implementation of RACVB advocacy and community relations efforts. Martesha previously held leadership roles at Midland States Bank, Alpine Bank, and the Rockford Park District.

Noah Neiber ’18 has successfully published the paper titled “Desire is the Mark of the Creature.” He wrote this paper for Rockford University Professor Matthew Flamm’s spring Classical Philosophy course.

Thomas (Tom) Little ’64 shares this anecdote from the class of '60 - A Memory of Spring Break in Our Freshman Year James (Jim) Gridley, Andrew (Andy) Loewe ’64, Richard (Dick) Wehrle ’61/’72, and I drove to Washington, DC on spring break in 1961. We drove Jim’s 1953 or 54 Oldsmobile, which had had its engine stolen a couple of weeks before while Jim was working on it in the shops at West High School. How he replaced the engine, I don’t know and didn’t want to ask. But with the engine in the car we drove to DC got about 40 miles to the quart of oil. At one point, somewhere in Indiana in the middle of the night, we ran out and the engine overheated. We finally were able to limp to an oasis after a trucker stopped and gave us enough oil to go a few miles. Having learned our lesson, we bought a case of oil to get us to the east coast. It went into the trunk with suitcases and a large box of sandwiches Jim’s mother had made. The car was thankfully roomy if not efficient in terms of oil use.

When we reached DC, Andy took a bus on to his home on Long Island, Dick stayed in a hotel and attended a political science workshop. Jim and I took up residence in the hotel’s parking lot for a couple of days at $1.75 day, which fit our budget well. We survived on mostly on the box of sandwiches, a couple of cans of beans, and the beer we were thrilled to be able to drink legally at a bar down the street (18-year-olds could buy 3.2% beer at that time.) Actually, after parking the car the afternoon we arrived, that’s where we headed.

It was a rough place and a bad neighborhood but we didn’t notice; we just sloshed down the cheap, lowalcohol beer and felt like kings. We slept in the car and probably washed and took care of other needs in Dick’s room, or perhaps the hotel facilities. We might have attended some activities with the workshop but I only remember how big we felt being able to belly up to a bar instead of sneaking six-packs in the car as we

did at home in Rockford. I also remember that the guy who ran the lot was a semi-pro basketball player and had plenty of stories to share.

Several days later, we went on to Andy’s house where we met his three incredibly gorgeous sisters (think Zsa Zsa Gabor times three). Our navigation in New York City was not very accurate, causing us to spend a fair amount of time wandering up and down midtown Manhattan in search of a way to get out of the city and onto Long Island. The Bronx/ Brooklyn accents of the several New York City policemen from whom we sought advice did not help us in our plight. It was a long time and a lot of oil before we finally found Long Island.

Our last stop after the happy days on Long Island was Newburg, NY, where Jim’s father, an officer in the Air Force, was stationed with a NORAD (North American Aerospace Defense) group. This Air Force wing had been stationed in Greenland for some time, which was apparently not given to a variety of activities and the folks, the service people and their families, had one past time. They bowled. Everyone bowled. I mean everyone. Men had leagues, women had leagues, and kids got off of their school buses at the bowling alley to play in leagues. The afternoon we arrived, we went bowling. Of course, it was fun: Jim was happy to spend time with his father (as we bowled) and all three of us youngsters again took delight buying and drinking real beer just like the adults. We bowled the next morning, perhaps without beer, and then bought another case of oil and headed back to Rockford.

I don’t remember how Dick got back to Rockford; I assume he took a bus with other workshop members. I do know that Andy and I became proficient at cracking a can of oil with the special spout device and getting it into the engine for a few more miles.

It was not a rowdy spring break, but it was fun, and most memorable!

A side note on the beer drinking: I remember a winter weekend night when Jim and I and a couple of others drove to Janesville, which had a bar where you could buy beer if you could see over the counter and had the money. In those days, the highway was heavily patrolled by state police looking for drinkers returning from Wisconsin, so we wisely hid our six-packs in front of the radiator in Jim’s Olds. When we got back to Rockford, we decided the new campus of Rockford College would be a safe place to do our drinking.

Construction wasn’t completed and the property wasn’t in use so we figured we were safe. What we didn’t figure is that the radiator of a car is cold! Repeat, cold! Every can of precious beer that we opened foamed out its small load of alcohol, leaving behind a can full of bad-tasting, very hoppy, ice. No beer for us that night. I’m not sure if that’s the night the police found us drinking there. I suspect not because I have a faint memory of them making us pour out the beer we had. So it must have been another night. Or perhaps, it was just laughter as we poured out the ice.

aula Ericson Egelson '75 returned to campus for two full days in February of 2019 as a guest presenter for the Alumni in Residence program. The Alumni deaprtment was thrilled to work with Paula to facilitate several discussions and presentations for Education faculty, current students, Rockford Public School principals and administrators, and Alignment Rockford board members. All were able to benefit from Paula's more than than 35 years of experience as a K-12 educator, director of reading and school improvement, and senior research analyst. Paula generously covered a wide range of topics during a busy few days including, Places You Can Go For Education" with the Education Club; “Undergraduate Research” with the Senior Seminar class; “Research Based Instructional Practices of Effective Principals” in a special session catered to area principals; and Classroom Management was the discussion for students in the course of the same name. Paula also took some time to reminisce with the enrollment management team about her experiences here and how that time shaped her impressive career path.

Paula graduated with a B.A. in Child Development.

She went on to earn her M.Ed., in Reading Education from Western Carolina University and a doctorate in education with a concentration in Educational Leadership from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Paula is currently the division director of research and accountability at the Southern Regional Education Board based in Atlanta, Georgia. While at SREB, Paula has co-authored research and policy publications on preparing principals to be more effective and improving the quality of career and technical teacher preparation. She has written

a variety of career and technical education and school leadership evaluation reports and directed the development of assessments for the Advanced Career program. She has also created materials and conducted professional development on classroom and performance assessment, school improvement, teacher evaluation, and literacy.

The final months of the year are traditionally considered the season of giving. In addition to the gifts we give to the important people in our lives, this season of generosity is also the prime time to show support for the causes we love. When you support Rockford University this year, not only will others benefit, but so will you.

Explore your options.

Although there may still be time to make several different types of charitable gifts, based on your unique situation and tax considerations, some gift types may be more practical than others. Following are a number of popular options.

1. Make an immediate impact.

Cash is an easy way to give each year. You can receive an income tax charitable deduction for the full value of the gift. If you write a check for less than $250, a copy of the check will suffice as a record of the gift.

You should obtain a receipt for gifts of $250 or more.

2. Save taxes on appreciated stock.

When you donate stocks to Rockford University that are worth more than what you originally paid for them, you can claim deductions for their full fair market value and eliminate any tax on the appreciation.

3. Avoid the hassles and costs associated with selling real estate.

Like securities, if you try to sell appreciated property, you will be subject to capital gains tax on the appreciation. By donating the property to charity, you can enjoy tax savings and relieve yourself from the hassles of selling or maintaining it.

4. Earn income from your gift.

Gifts such as a charitable remainder trust or a charitable gift annuity provide you, or a beneficiary of your choice, with payments for life or a period of years, and the University with support thereafter.

If you use appreciated securities to fund the gift, you will be entitled to an income tax deduction based, in part, on the charitable portion of the securities’ full value, in addition to eliminating up-front capital gains tax.

5. Put an insurance policy to good use.

An old policy you no longer need can make a big impact on our work. To qualify as a deductible gift, Rockford University must become the policy owner. For most types of insurance policies, your tax deduction is usually the cost basis or the fair market value of the policy—whichever is less.

Rev. William P. Knott Reverend Knott served the Diocese of Rockford, Illinois as an associate pastor at St. Mary’s of Freeport and St. James of Rockford. He attended Vatican II in Rome, where he received his Master’s degree. He returned to Rockford where he was assigned to the Post Conciliar Center and he taught at Rockford College as an Associate Professor. He also served as Chaplain of the Newman Centers at Rockford and Rock Valley Colleges and thorough his role as an advisor, and an advocate for students.

Bertil Nyman '06H Emeritus Professor, 1940-2019 taught marketing and business courses in our graduate program for 27 years.

The University extends its sympathies to the family and friends of beloved and long-time Rockford professor Bert Nyman, who died October 23, 2019. In recognition of Bert's years of dedication to Rockford College, he was named as an honorary alumnus in 2006. Bert retired in 2008 and remained a devoted friend and supporter of Rockford University.
