At the Monday, April 26, 2021 Stated meeting our Lodge was officially received as a Society of Washington Lodges with MW Scott Thomas presiding. The Charter and Member Lodges of the Society are listed on the Memorial's website and in a plaque outside the Replica Lodge Room at the Memorial. Member Lodges will be those regular Lodges recognized by the Grand Lodges of the United States who are committed to supporting the Memorial and who make a one-time donation of $2,500.00.

The Society of Washington Lodges are invited to gather and meet in a tiled lodge meeting to be hosted by Alexandria-Washington Lodge № 22, at the Memorial on the evening before George Washington’s Birthday each year.

Brethren, I hope all is well in your lives this month. This past month has been a wonderful one for me in so many ways with Lodge, my Widows Sons Chapter, my American Legion Riders Chapter, and my personal life as well.

This month has really made me proud to be who I am as well as proud to be a part of the many organizations that I am.

Another awesome aspect to the month of April was that Memento Mori Chapter of the Widows Sons talked with Hope Women’s Center and they are now our charity.

The first charitable thing that was done was to help Hope Women’s Center with the cleanout and reorganization of one of their donation storage buildings. We had 3 members of the chapter and 2 of the Lady’s there to help with this endeavor which took a few hours on a Saturday morning at one of their facilities. We are looking forward

When is it appropriate to use the Military Salute vs.

Hand over Heart?

What does that mean to us as Veterans and supporters of Veterans? Any veteran can salute during the nationAs veterans we have heard the debate time and time al anthem. In 2008 a new provision was added to the Flag Code pertaining to veterans and saluting during the national PLEDGE OF ALLEGANCE anthem. It stated: Now when it comes to the pledge of allegiance you “(B) members of the Armed Forces and Veterans who are present but not in uniform may render the military salute in the manner provided for individuals in uniform; and

“When not in uniform men should remove any nonreligious headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart. If you are on active service in the military and are in full uniform you will stand at attention and salute, but you will remain silent. This harkens back to the tradition of your oath that you took to enter military service is a higher oath than the pledge of allegiance. This is not to discourage you from saying the Pledge it is instead just a guideline in full military uniform. The Flag Code states that if you render a hand salute during the Pledge you must do it as you were in full uniform. So a veteran can render a hand salute but they must remain silent during the pledge. If you are going to recite the pledge you should place your hand over your heart. If you are wearing a veteran organization head gear, aka your AMVETS, American Legion, VFW, etc., cover you leave it on and place your hand over your heart and recite the pledge. (cont.)

Hello Brethren!

We are now into the month of May and in this month, we have a day that we hold in remembrance of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms and for our country. Of course, I am refereeing to Memorial Day. This day is actually a very important day in Masonry as well as for the members of the military who remember their fallen brethren. For back in 1868 A brother by the name of General John A. Logan, A Famous Union Civil War General, had Declared on May 5th Memorial Day (originally known as Decoration Day) Should be observed. And the first day that this would be observed was on May 30th of that year. For my article this month I would like to share this article written by WB W. O'Neal of Springfield Masonic Lodge of Alabama and published by the Masonic Service Association of North America.

As we all know, aprons are worn by a number of individuals, both male and females for different purposes.

An apron is commonly worn when cooking and preparing food to prevent staining the cook or chef's clothing.

Workmen often wear aprons to protect their clothing. A medical doctor, dentist, or patient may wear an apron to protect from harmful X-rays or medical uses. Even children wear aprons to protect their clothing when working with paints, or other materials. The list goes on and on for the many usages of the apron. Aprons were also worn by the workmen of King Solomon's Temple to preform the setting of brick and stone work using mortar. So, it would be fair to say that "the apron is an article which protects an individual.

The wearing of "aprons" dates back almost to the beginning of time itself. Upon entering the Masonic Fraternity, each new member becomes a brother and is presented with a Lambskin or White Leather Apron. The apron is given along with a lengthy explanation of its Masonic meaning.

As workmen in the building of King Solomon's Temple wore their aprons to protect their clothing, therefore it is altogether fitting and proper that we as Masons should wear our aprons 24 hours a day, seven days a week, in our minds and hearts, as a constant reminder to make every effort to guard and protect ourselves from harm and evil and to make our lives and actions as spotless as the white apron.

I have a paperback edition of a book written by G.G. Coupon of St. Johns College, Cambridge, England, entitled Medieval Faith and Symbolism (published by Harper and Brothers, New York). This book is part of a larger work entitled Art and the Reformation.

This is not a Masonic book but is a learned and extensive documented survey of medieval architecture and the related arts covering the period of roughly A.D. 1000 to 1600.

It gives a mass of detailed information and data regarding the operative stonemasons of that period who were the architects, builders, and sculptors of the great cathedrals, castles, and government buildings with their accompanying statuary, gargoyles, and ornaments. In his study, Mr. Coulton examined the original records, contracts, building accounts, and payrolls, which have been preserved with many of these ancient buildings, as well as the statutes affecting them.

Some of the Masons of the continent and of the continental rites have paid more attention to the system of Masonic horometry, and have formed or invented a variety of terms and legends in relation to Masonic hours. Among these rites, that of Zinnendorf, established about the end of the last century in Germany, has some curious details. The following extract from the ritual is translated from Lenning's Encyclopedia of Freemasonry

Q.- "When is it midnight ?"

A.- "When the Master is about to close the Lodge."

Q- "How many hours are there in a Freemason's Lodge?"

A.- " Five."

Q.- "What are these three hours?"

A.- "Noon., high noon and midnight."

Q.- " How are these hours called?"

A. - "Twelve, noon, high noon, midnight and high midnight."

Q.- " When is it twelve ?"

A.- " Before the Lodge is opened and when the Lodge is closed."

Q.- "When is it noon ?"

A.- "When the Master is about to open the Lodge."

Q.- " When is it high noon ?"

A.- " When the Lodge is duly opened."

Mr. Coulton says that in the Eton College accounts the “hard-hewers” are evidently connected with the Kentish rag-stone, of which large quantities were used in the upper courses of the chapel. Their job was rather that of quarryman than of the skilled mason, and they probably worked with axes, not with chisels. The hard-hewer, then, dealt with stone in its most elementary form, and it is probable that he was often regularly employed in preparing the work for his more

In Freemasonry we use tracing boards, or illustrations depicting various emblems & symbols of Freemasonry, as teaching aids and guides. They vary in complexity and are often developed for each degree in a craft lodge.

Many different rituals required that the eye should not see until the heart has conceived the mysteries of the Order. It was therefore commonplace for the aspirant to membership to be shrouded in darkness as a preparation to the reception of the full light of knowledge; whatever that may be!

The time for the confinement of a Candidate into darkness and solitude varied dramatically across the different mysteries. It is believed that amongst the Druids of Britain the period was nine days and nine nights. Some of the Grecian Mysteries required three times nine days. In select Persian Orders, that period of time was extended to an incredible fifty days of darkness, solimony has upon the Candidate. There is nothing secret tude and fasting. The “Capitular” or Chapter Degrees of Freemasonry refers the four degrees of the York Rite system that follow the “blue lodge” or “Craft” degrees. The Holy Royal Arch is the final degree and the culmination of the Chapter experience for a candidate. The Chapter is the second body of the York Rite of Freemasonry (following the Symbolic or 'Blue' Lodge), though in some Jurisdictions it is considered the completion of the initial three degrees and is part of the regular Craft experience. The Scottish Rite is a Masonic organization that continues a Master Mason's education of the first three degrees. The Scottish Rite is one of several appendant groups of the worldwide fraternity known as Freemasonry. Each Valley has up to four Scottish Rite bodies, and each body confers a set of degrees. In the Southern Jurisdiction these are the Lodge of Perfection (4°-14°). Chapter Rose Croix (15°-18°), Council of Knights Kadosh (19°-30°), and the Consistory (31°-32°). The Widows Sons, Masonic Riders Association is a group of Master Masons who have gathered together to promote Freemasonry within the motorcycling community and help introduce motorcycling to our non-riding Masonic brethren. As Freemasons we are committed to "Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth" tenets of our lives, as Widows Sons we are devoted to supporting Widows and Orphans of our Masonic brethren. We hold events and rides as fundraisers for this noble cause, and other charitable causes. The chapters in Arizona are very diverse with members from various areas, lodges, and a variety of motorcycles.

The goal of the Ladies’ Oriental Shrine, as set forth at the organizational meeting in 1903, is to promote sociability, good fellowship and the betterment of all Ladies connected with the organization. Our Ladies participate in parades, mini-clinics, Shrine Circuses, and much more. Ladies may choose to be active in a variety of special interest Units within each local Court such as Oriental Bands, Patrols, Clown or Dance Units. Our Ladies are always ready to display their pageantry and glamour in order to show the public how much they enjoy their activities.

Today, LOSNA has nearly 8,000 members in 64 Courts across North America and even members in Japan and Taiwan.

High Twelve is an association of Master Masons who desire an hour of Masonic fellowship independent of the formal ritual of Lodge but dedicated to the service to the fraternity. High Twelve was founded by E. C. Wolcott in Sioux City, Iowa on May 17, 1921.

We practice the great lessons of Freemasonry and encourage members to attend and participate in their Blue Lodge activities. High Twelve unifies Master Masons from many Lodges in an association where fellowship grows into lasting friendships. As High Twelve Masons, we support the Public School System and encourage participation in constructive community activities. There are over 300 active High Twelve Clubs with 25,000 members in the United States, Canada and Foreign Countries.

These 501c3 charitable organizations provide much needed services to their communities. Those services include assistance to our Veterans at the three VA Hospitals in Arizona, Domestic abuse shelters, child learning disabilities, training and assistance for people with special needs, support for soldiers abroad, Adult literacy programs and Personal hygiene kits for the working poor and homeless.

The first mention of Moon Lodges can be found in the Cooke Manuscript of 1410, one of the oldest documents belonging to the Masonic Craft. In the U.S., Moon Lodges were first noted in colonial times around 1717 to be operating in Philadelphia, Boston and Tennessee.

There appears to have been approximately 3000 moon lodges in the U.S. at the turn of the last century but by the 1950’s that number had decreased to 500. Today, by last count, there are roughly 129 moon lodges in the U.S. A moon lodge was born out of necessity due to the lack of natural or artificial illumination by which one could travel to and from meetings. During the 18th century, transportation was limited to horseback, horse & buggy, walking and even in some circumstances by boat. There were no paved roads and very few gravel but merely two dirt ruts that would meander through bush and fields rarely in a straight line. With only a candle or coal oil lamp to light the way, a full moon provided welcome companionship for a long and lonely trek. Individuals would travel 8-10 miles or more and were unable to make the long trip home at night and would be supplied lodging by a fellow brother, leaving after breakfast to return home the next morning.

Gila Valley Lodge No. 9 continues to follow this tradition and is honored to be still one of the remaining “Moon Lodges” in the United States. Our Stated Meetings are the Monday On or Before the Full Moon of the Month, The Lodge also goes “Dark” during the summer months of July and August, where no Stated Meetings are held.
