More than 100 people descended upon the Don’s Mountain Camp at the base of the Superstition Mountains on March 7th for a Third Degree Ceremony that will once again go down as the most scenic Degrees in the State. The weather was perfect as a Candidate from Apache Lodge No. 69 was raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason. It was an extra special event for the Brethren of the Apache Junction Lodge as the Candidate was the Brother of the currently Master of the Lodge.

This year the organizers of the Degree started allowing vendors to set up during the event and Three-Zero Left llc took advantage of the offer and displayed his awesome wares. Using today’s technology, people are getting information quickly, almost instantly from all sorts of sources, about everything in life, sometimes without fact checking as well as in years past. In todays world of media/social media news and information are easily taken out of context and people can be manipulated by this new form of communications.

I simply ask everyone now to be careful, take care of yourself as you do with any flu season, and be aware of everyone else who also needs these products. If you feel uncomfortable going out, stay in. If you are sick, stay in.

On the other hand we are also gaining information about this virus from world scientists at an alarming rate versus 50 years ago. This new form of communication may help us to find a way to limit the effects of this virus and future health issues sooner than we ever thought possible.

With that being said, this new strain is quick moving and affecting those with underlying issues the most. We all need to think about what we do and how that may affect others (whether we know them or not).

Faith, Hope, Charity Greetings Brothers, We certainly find ourselves in an interesting time of history. Our government has completely stopped almost all commerce, most of the country has given up their liberties in the name of public health up to and including possible jail time in Rhode Island for not complying. Then there are our politicians who have just added trillions more to the national deficit. It’s an exciting time, isn’t it?

As I am sure a lot of you have, I have spent more than my normally allocated time on social media reading posts and comments of all the people that are absolutely terrified. I see them in the stores wearing clothing that covers them from head to toe, wearing masks and gloves and hoping to make it home without coming within six feet of another human. These are our neighbors and friends and they are fearful, hopeless that they will be able to survive without losing those that they love or even their own lives.

My personal circle is full of business owners. I read their conversations online and many are absolutely terrified that they are going to lose their business. They are worried about the thought of taking on debt that they may never be able to recover from since before this they struggled to make payroll every week and keep the lights on. Others are now fearful that with the new government inflated unemployment that they will not be able to get their employees back if and when life returns to normal. They are living in a dark time and are coping by gathering online having drinking “parties” and discussing how they might get through this. Looking for any glimmer of hope to help them get up the next day.

Then there is charity. If you’ve read or heard me give my What’s In A Word paper than you already know that charity is love in action. During this time, I find myself focusing on that action more and more. In my own life that is a reminder to show compassion to those without hope. A phone call, text or email to someone just checking in and making sure that they are ok. It’s an offer to run errands for those that are most vulnerable. It’s the sending of a joke or funny meme to friends so that they have a moment where they can smile or laugh in a time that they might otherwise not be able to.

Brothers, I want to encourage you each to find a way to muffle your own fears and worry and find a way to bring a smile to those that you love. Pick up the phone and be a friend to someone that you know could use a friendly

FELLOW: The Saxon word for fellow is felaw. Spelman derives it from two words be and toy, which signifies bound in mutual trust a plausible derivation, and not unsuited to the meaning of the world. But Hicks gives a better etymology when he derives it from the Anglo-Saxon folgian, meaning to follow and thus a fellow would be a follower, a companion, an associate. In the Middle Ages, therefore, the Operative Masons were divided into Masters and Fellows.

Thus in the Harleian Manuscript, No. 2054, it is said: "Now I will rehearse other charges in singular for Masters & fellows." Those who were of greater skill held a higher position and were designated as Masters, while the masses of the Fraternity, the commonalty, as we might say, were called Fellows. In the Matthew Cooke Manuscript this principle is very plainly laid down. There it is written that Euclid "ordained that they who were passing of cunning should be passing honored, and commanded to call the cunninger Master .... and commanded that they that were less of wit should not be called servant nor subject, but Fellow, for nobility of their gentle blood" (see lines 67588). From this custom has originated the modern title of Fellow Craft, given to the Second Degree of Speculative Freemasonry; although not long after the revival of 1717 the Fellows ceased to constitute the main Body of

the Fraternity, the Masters having taken and still holding that position.

FELLOW CRAFT: The Second Degree of Freemasonry in all the Pites is that of the Fellow Craft. In French it is called Compagnon; in Spanish, CompaĂąero; in Italian, Compagno; and in German, Gesell: in all of which the radical meaning of the word is a fellow workman, thus showing the origin of the title from an operative institution. Like the Degree of Apprentice, it is only preparatory in the higher initiation of the Master; and yet it differs essentially from it in its symbolism.

For, as the First Degree was typical of youth, the Second is supposed to represent the stage of manhood, and hence the acquisition of science is made its prominent characteristic.

While the former is directed in all its symbols and allegorical ceremonies to the purification of the heart, the latter is intended by its lessons to train the reasoning faculties and improve the intellectual powers.

Before the eighteenth century, the great Body of the Fraternity consisted of Fellow Crafts, who are designated in all the old manuscripts as Fellows. With the uncertain times we find ourselves in dealing with the pandemic of Covid 19 this is a good time to take inventory of our Masonic Tool Chests and do a little maintenance on them and refresh ourselves on their use.

Of Tubal Cain, the sacred writings, as well as the Masonic legends, give us but scanty information. All that we hear of him in the Book of Genesis is that he was the son of Lamech and Zillah, and was "an instructor of every artifices in brass and iron." The Hebrew original does not justify the common version, for lotesh, does not mean "an instructor," but "a sharpener "-one who whets or sharpens instruments. Hence Doctor Raphall translates the passage as one "who

sharpened various tools in copper and iron." The authorized version has, however, almost indelibly impressed the character of Tubal Cain as the Father of Artificers; and it is in this sense that he has been introduced from a very early period into the legendary history of Freemasonry.

The first Masonic reference to Tubal Cain is found in the Legend of the Craft, where he is called the

Founder of Smith-Craft, an explanation agreeing closely with modern biblical scholarship which designates him as the "Founder of the Gild of Smiths or Metal Workers." We cite this part of the legend from the Dowland Manuscript simply because of its more modern orthography; but the story is substantially the same in all the old manuscript Constitutions. In that manuscript we five find the following account of Tubal Cain:

It might seem that Tubal is an attribute compounded of the definite particle T and the word Baal, signifying Lord. Tubal Cain would then signify the Lord Cain. Again, dhu or du, in Arabic, signifies Lord, and we trace the same signification of this affix in its various interchangeable forms of Du, Tu, and Di, in many Semitic words. But the question of the identical origin of Tubal Cain and Vulcan has at length been settled by the researches of comparative philologists. Tubal Cain is Semitic in origin, and Vulcan is Aryan. The latter may be traced to the Sanskrit ulka, meaning a firebrand, from which we get also the Latin fulgur and fulmen, names of the lightning.

Dear Brothers, In times like these we need to remember more than ever to take the time and decide what truly is best for our families, our community, and our nation. I am hoping that everyone is staying well and is staying at home if possible.

But while in moments like these in our time we also need to remember what we have gone through in our degrees.

Reminding ourselves to keep our passions within due bounds especially now that we have been encouraged to maintain 6 feet, we are now literally maintaining our due bounds. So many of us are feeling a bit anxious and want to get back to normal as quick as possible. We know this is going to take a while, so I have this recommendation. Go back and reread your degrees, find that is anything but that. a book to read, or do some research regarding masonry. Major exhibits have been added. Interiors have been repaired and repainted. Lighting has been updated. But the most considerable work is the top-to-bottom restoration of the building itself—the first such renovation since the Memorial was completed nearly a century ago.

Beginning at the Memorial’s pyramid level, we have begun a multi-year project to perform all needed structural repairs. Stone by stone, are repointing the mortar and protecting the building from water penetration. When completed, the building will be in bet-

Andrew James Doran was born at New Philadelphia, Ohio on July 11, 1840. In 1860 he headed west seeking adventure and fortune. He traveled to Colorado then later that year to Tucson while on his way to California. He had some knowledge of construction and mill wrighting and wanted to pursue a vocation using those skills. When the Civil War broke out, he was one of the first to enlist at Sacramento. He was assigned to Company F, California Infantry and in 1861 was stationed in Tucson. He was given a brevet commission due to his familiarity with the Butterfield stage route which ran through Yuma and Maricopa Wells.

In early August 1943, Lieutenant General George S. Patton slapped two United States Army soldiers under his command during the Sicily Campaign of World War II. Patton's hard-driving personality and lack of belief in the medical condition combat stress reaction, then known as "battle fatigue" or "shell shock", led to the soldiers' becoming the subject of his ire in incidents on 3 and 10 August, when Patton struck and berated them after discovering they were patients at evacuation hospitals away from the front lines without apparent physical injuries.

The second site of the E.N. Fish & Co. Mercantile Store became the Joseph Collingwood & Co. Store and Wells Fargo Office in 1877. As chief produce buyer, E.N. Fish & Co. was responsible for providing the economic foundation of the town’s early success as an agricultural trading center.

The firm played a role during Florence’s mining booms by extending credit to the Silver King Mine. The west wing contained hotel rooms and an office. A saloon and dining room were in the south wing. From early statehood until the mid-1940s, the west wing contained dwellings. Due to the efforts of Pete King and others the back portion provided a classroom for segregated AfricanAmerican children during the early 1950's. It became the American legion Post headquarters in 1944.

The Scottish Rite is a Masonic organization that continues a Master Mason's education of the first three degrees. The Scottish Rite is one of several appendant groups of the worldwide fraternity known as Freemasonry. Each Valley has up to four Scottish Rite bodies, and each body confers a set of degrees. In the Southern Jurisdiction these are the Lodge of Perfection (4°-14°). Chapter Rose Croix (15°-18°), Council of Knights Kadosh (19°-30°), and the Consistory (31°-32°). The first mention of Moon Lodges can be found in the Cooke Manuscript of 1410, one of the oldest documents belonging to the Masonic Craft. In the U.S., Moon Lodges were first noted in colonial times around 1717 to be operating in Philadelphia, Boston and Tennessee.

There appears to have been approximately 3000 moon lodges in the U.S. at the turn of the last century but by the 1950’s that number had decreased to 500. Today, by last count, there are roughly 129 moon lodges in the U.S. A moon lodge was born out of necessity due to the lack of natural or artificial illumination by which one could travel to and from meetings. During the 18th century, transportation was limited to horseback, horse & buggy, walking and even in some circumstances by boat. There were no paved roads and very few gravel but merely two dirt ruts that would meander through bush and fields rarely in a straight line. With only a candle or coal oil lamp to light the way, a full moon provided welcome companionship for a long and lonely trek. Individuals would travel 810 miles or more and were unable to make the long trip home at night and would be supplied lodging by a fellow brother, leaving after breakfast to return home the next morning.

Gila Valley Lodge No. 9 continues to follow this tradition and is honored to be still one of the remaining “Moon Lodges” in the United States. Our Stated Meetings are the Monday On or Before the Full Moon of the Month, The Lodge also goes “Dark” during the summer months of July and August, where no Stated Meetings are held.
