A Message from Dean Lei What does it mean to be RBS Strong? It starts with our proud staff members. It involves working hard, building a talented and diverse team, continually innovating our brand and our deliverables, and providing outstanding service. It also involves celebrating our achievements along the way.

I look forward to seeing all of you at the Virtual Mini Staff Retreat on November 11. This will give us a special opportunity to celebrate, network, learn about professional development, recognize our staff award winners, and have some fun together. 2020 has been a year like no other, but we have been resilient. As we head into the final months of 2020, I would like to thank all of you for your dedication, your commitment, and for making RBS Strong!

Department: Dean’s Office Years of Service: 1 Year at RBS Duties: Matt administers the RBS Engagement and Leadership (REAL), Peer Mentoring, and UG Research Programs. He also coordinates RBS student organizations, the Undergraduate Curriculum Innovations Task Force, and other initiatives, as assigned by the Dean’s Office.

Hobbies: Matt is a sports enthusiast, specifically following the New England Patriots, college football and basketball, and all Rutgers sports teams. When not at work, he can be found front row at Rutgers home sporting events and featured on the big screen and TV screens alike.

Department: Office of Diversity Programs Years of Service: 2 years at RBS Duties: Yvette empowers and helps in the development of students throughout their academic career by providing them with a multitude of resources; creating and executing leadership workshops/ events, recruiting for and managing pre-college programs to increase equity and access for underrepresented student populations at RBS, building relationships with corporate partners, and diversity and inclusion events, to name a few.

Hobbies: Yvette enjoys cooking/baking and trying to recreate dishes. She likes experimenting with recipes, gardening, interior/exterior design, creating floral arrangements, finding the right home for her real estate clients!

New Jersey Small Business Development Center In 1977, America’s Small Business Development Centers - New Jersey (NJSBDC) was established by an act of Congress as one of the first national SBDC pilot projects resulting from the passage of Public Law 96-302. Currently, the NJSBDC network is composed of the headquarters located at Rutgers Business School – Newark and New Brunswick, and 12 full-service regional centers, and over 20 satellit offices located throughout the state.

The NJSBDC Network serves New Jersey’s complex and diverse small businesses by providing the following: • • •

One-on-one, comprehensive and confidential business development consulting Entrepreneurial, business and management development training Business information and research

Since COVID-19, the NJSBDC statewide network has been on the front lines of small business technical assistance and comprehensive training. NJSBDC helped businesses with over $12 Million in local and federal Disaster, EIDL and PPP loans. NJSBDC also provides webinars, specifically related to COVID-19 through the CARES Act to address various COVID-19 related topics, including Debt Restructuring, Cyber Security, Ecommerce, Business Continuity/ Remote Operations, and Protecting Your Intellectual Property.

Rutgers Cinema Do you know Rutgers has their own cinema? Located on the Livingston Campus, walking distance from 100 Rockafeller is Rutgers Cinema. The Cinema opened its doors in 2013 but, like many businesses, had temporarily closed in March due to the pandemic. The cinema was excited to reopen Friday, October 23rd with new safety and health protocols in place. With a valid Rutgers ID, enjoy a matinee for $5 or $7 for any other timeslot.

Eco-Friendly Rides The last couple of months have certainly brought many changes and challenges to Rutgers University and RBS, but one exciting, innovative moment to celebrate is the launch of the VeoRide E-Scooter Program on the New Brunswick campus. Micro-mobility and scooter use has been increasing in popularity in US cities since their introduction in 2017. The new pilot program offers a convenient, efficient transportation mode to Rutgers students, faculty, and staff. More sustainable than traditional motor vehicles or buses, e-scooters may help reduce carbon emissions, too.

The electric scooters are operated and funded by VeoRide. These GPS-enabled machines are dockless, allowing users to locate, unlock, and pay (via credit card) for an e-scooter using the VeoRide app on their phone. For more information on Veo Ride, visit here.

Facilities Telecommuting FAQ’s

I plan to go to Campus to pick up work files. What am I required to do before visiting?

The My Campus Pass, is an online tool that is integrated into the Rutgers Portal and must be submitted before traveling to Campus each day. Once you submit your survey, you will receive an immediate notification about whether or not you have been cleared for entry. The campus pass should be filled out the day that you plant to visit the campus. After completing the survey, please complete the Building Activity Log survey.

Can my student workers park in the Faculty and Staff lot during our telecommute?

No, Standard University parking regulations are being enforced during telecommuting. Students working onsite are not permitted to park in faculty/staff lots, despite them being virtually empty. Students may only park in student lots, and only with a proper permit. Rutgers Transportation Services has been, and will continue to ticket violators, at a cost of $50 for each citation. To avoid this costly mistake, please instruct all student workers to use their RU mobile app and purchase a daily permit for $5 each anytime they will be on campus.

If an employee travels to one of the states listed on the travel advisory list are they “required� to quarantine?

Yes, employees who have traveled domestically or internationally to states or countries on the travel advisory lists, are required to quarantine for 14 days. Supervisors should work with impacted employees to determine whether telecommuting accommodations can be made available during this time period. If telecommuting is not possible, employees should contact One Source to determine which leave options are available.

Are Mail Services still available during our telecommute?

Yes, incoming mail is distributed on a weekly basis. Packages and express envelopes are delivered Monday through Friday. The recipients are contacted by email and may collect their packages from the mailroom.

Outgoing mail and packages (up to 30 lbs.) are picked up weekly and should be accompanied by a completed metering request form. For further assistance, please contact Nancy Kiley (100RR) or Daquan Dorsey (1WP) via RBS-Facilities@business.rutgers.edu.

RBS Strong Appreciation Boxes Dean Lei recently sent all RBS faculty and staff a small token of her appreciation for their resilience, resourcefulness and commitment to the RBS learning community during these challenging times.

Over 600 RBS-Strong Boxes were assembled and mailed as a joint effort by members of the Facilities Teams in both Newark and New Brunswick, with assistance from three outstanding RBS student workers, Elissa Aponte, Brione Lockett and Muneeba Tariq and staff member, Brenda Anderson.

New Jersey Employees Charitable Campaign Join the University, along with thousands across the state this year with New Jersey Employees Charitable Campaign (NJECC). Over 800 New Jersey approved and registered charitable organizations partake in the campaign and, in these unprecedented times, help other programs that were overshadowed

by COVID-19. Donations can be spread across the year through payroll deductions or made as a one-time payment.

RBS Staff Newsletter Love in the Time of COVID Couples around the world are finding creative ways to proceed with their wedding plans during the pandemic. Some of our staff are proud parents of the bride or groom.

Rob and Jessica were married on September 6th. The ceremony took place in Little Falls, NJ in Rob’s parent’s backyard with 30 family and friends in attendance.

Barbara Jensen, Senior Program Administrator, Rutgers Accounting Research Center, and husband Jeff, with their daughter, Alexandra, and new son-in-law, Jay. The micro-wedding was held on October 17th in Vermont with 30 family and friends in attendance. The father of the bride even made their wedding cake, a true labor of love.

Al’Janir, son of Anthony Drakeford, Security Officer at 1 Washington Park in Newark, and wife, Shania, were married on August 21st at The Mill at Fine Creek in Powhatan, VA surrounded by friends and family.

Department of New Jersey Awards Top Employers The American Legion Department of New Jersey’s Employment, Homeless & Education Committee presented its Employer of the Year awards on September 19th at Backward Flag Brewery in Forked River, NJ. Of the recipients was our very own staff member Shy Hopkins, Program Coordinator, NJ-Small Business Development Center, awarded Veteran Business Mentor of the Year. We asked Shy to share her thoughts with us.

I grew up feeling the need to do something that makes the world better every day. And I’m both humbled and inspired by friends, colleagues, and others who help me realize that there is so much more that can be done, which makes me work harder. That said, though I have done some things, I plan on doing so much more.

So far, I’m proud to say that I served as Co-Chair of RU-Newark’s Staff Council for 2018 - 2020. In that role, I helped lead Rutgers’ first staff council through their inaugural years. It was a lot of work, but very rewarding and helped me understand the value of the RU-Newark campus.

As an Air Force veteran, veterans and the military are close to my heart. So, I sit on the Advisory Board of the NJ State Veterans Chamber of Commerce, where I helped to brand and launch the chamber in 2018. I also help position the chamber amongst various stakeholders that can help veteran and military spouse business owners in building their businesses.

And I sit on the Advisory Board for FLOW Follies, a local scholarship fundraising non-profit organization that raises funds for the districts of Franklin Lakes, Oakland and Wyckoff, NJ high school students through via community theatre and live performances. The cool thing about FLOW Follies is it helps to keep me grounded and gives me an excuse to be silly.

I’m also a professional singer and songwriter, so I developed a program to help revitalize live music in New Jersey through hiring professional, local musicians to perform at key restaurants and open spaces to re-engage with past live music scenes. Through this initiative, I’ve produced a series of live music performances in Military Park every October since 2015 in Military Park for Live Music Month. It’s amazing how much the nighttime economy helps local economies overall and it would also be a great thing to put metrics behind how live music can help drive economies.

And finally, I’ve been blessed to work at the NJ Small Business Development Center (NJSBDC) here at Rutgers Business School. In my position, I help people start and build their businesses - help them realize their own American Dream. The best thing about it is these services are primarily using their own tax dollars to help them, so they don’t have to come out of their pocket for expert business and entrepreneurial advice and guidance. In light of COVID-19, these services are needed desparately, so we’ve been working really, really hard to get NJ’s businesses the help they need. They’ve been hurting and many are hemoragging money since March and the impact is vast. I definitely feel this is the most important charge I have right now.

RBS Staff Newsletter Staff Shared Recipes Icelandic Skyr Cake

By Jenny Roberts, Manager, Academic Programs Ingredients: • Skyr (Siggi’s skyr vanilla large tub 24 oz) • 1 pack Biscoff Cookies • 2 tbsp Cinnamon bun spread from Trader Joe’s (if preferred use Nutella or peanut butter instead) • 8.5 oz heavy cream • 100 grams (approx one stick) of butter Instructions 1. Put cookies in the food processor and grind/pulverize. Set aside a small amount to garnish with later.

2. Melt butter and mix with cookies.

3. Pack it down in a round pie dish (I use a flat bottom measuring cup to pack it in and smooth the surface).

4. Mix cream and large tub of Skyr and blend well. Add the cinnamon spread or the mixing of your choosing and whip again for a few seconds.

5. Pour in pie dish and garnish with the left over cookies.

6. Refrigerate for a few hours.

Supporting photos and/or the traditions and stories behind the sweets are welcomed. The recipe collection will be organized and distributed to participants in plenty of time to start your 2020 holiday baking. Deadline: November 30th.

Virtual Tailgate On Saturday afternoon, October 31st, 52 members of the RBS Family, including faculty, staff, students, and Vice Dean Can Uslay, gathered together via Zoom for the first ever, virtual tailgate. It was a fun, innovative way to celebrate the proud tradition of Rutgers football and cheer on the Scarlet Knights before their big game versus the Indiana Hoosiers.
