A Message from Dean Lei It has been great to catch up with so many of you in person over the past few weeks. I have also enjoyed seeing and talking to many of our students who are once again filling our class ooms and planning activities on campus. Thank you for your resilience over the past months and your commitment to RBS and to our students.

We have persevered together and accomplished many important things. I look forward to a great semester.

Staff Spotlights Efi McMillian Program Coordinator Department: Dean’s Office (Facilities) Years of Service: 4 years Job Duties: Coordinate facilities management through initiation and follow-up of work orders relating to building quality/safety and custodial deficiencies, assists in the management of building-related projects as required, work with internal and external constituents to plan, schedule, organize, execute, and monitor events.

In addition, I serve as the liaison between the internal and serves as the liaison between the internal and external communities for events, seminars conferences, etc. held at the New Brunswick campus of RBS. I also analyze statistics regarding room fill rates develops and prepares reports monthly.

Marcye McFadden Career Counseling Officer Department: Office of Career Management Years of Service: I have been at Rutgers since March 2020. I started the day that all of RU went virtual, so like many students, this academic year will be my first “on campus” experience!

Job Duties: I work in the Office of Career Management as a Career Counseling Officer. My primary student cohorts include the Master’s in Quantitative Finance and the MS in Business of Fashion students, but I often work with other RBS students as well.

My primary responsibility is to help students understand the job market and provide the skills and tools to become career ready. This includes the “usual suspects” involved in landing a job - resume writing, interview prep, business etiquette, cover letters, etc. But career management is more than landing a job. For sustained career success you need a foundation in other skill areas - professionalism, networking, understanding and articulating strengths, communicating effectively - to name a few. I help students build these skills as well because they are the key to continued success throughout one’s career.

What would you do (for a career) if you weren’t doing this?

This is a fantasy answer, but I would run a record label and look for new artists and listen to music all day! I have literally zero musical talent - I can’t sing or write music or play any instrument. So I have no qualifications for this job, other than being a huge music fan. I love listening to new music, and I count on my kids to feed me some of their playlists. This keeps me more current than I would otherwise be!

What television show or movie are you ashamed to admit that you love?

I used to love any natural disaster movie. They are almost always cheesy and ridiculous, and there’s usually one unlikely person who can save everyone.But to be honest, looking at recent weather and real-time natural disasters makes these films seem less like sci-fi onsense and more like predictions. I still love Austin Powers ( the first one), and I’m not ashamed to admit it!

If you won the lottery, what is the first thing you would do?

I would probably spend the money on travel, first to see far-fl ng family, and second to see all those other places on my travel list. But then I’d need more time. Can I buy time too? Or - maybe I’d start a record label!

Program Spotlight: Specialized Programs and Student Engagement During the January Program Spotlight, Matt Peyrek, Program Coordinator II, shared a presentation introducing the Specialized Programs at RBS, along with more information about the many Student Engagement opportunities available for 2022.

Matt and the Student Engagement Team, led by Vice Dean Can Uslay and Madhavi Chakrabarty, Director of Academic Advising and Student Counseling, are responsible for enhancing the student experience and promoting a positive, inclusive, and welcoming community for over 10,00 students across both the Newark and New Brunswick campus. Working closely with Undergraduate Advising, the Office of Career Management, Road to Success programs, and Marketing and Communications, Student Engagement also serves as the liaison between school leadership and RBS students outside the classroom.

For example, REAL (RBS Engagement & Leadership Program) is a data analytics and student engagement platform designed to track activities and measure student participation outside the classroom. The REAL program was first implemented in the spring f 2018 in the Business Forum class to enhance the classroom experience through extracurricular activities. In the spring of 2020, the REAL program was rebranded and relaunched, and it is now required in the Business Forum class. This one-stop calendar for all RBS events has shared over 250 events this past fall and boasts over 1,500+ activity completions by students.

The RBS Distinguishes Speaker Series features role models for our students who share insights, expertise, and advice with our students to help shape their academic experience. The series is primarily designed to inspire our undergraduate students and help them make better major, internship, career, and life decisions.

With a similar objective, the Rutgers Business School Peer Mentoring Program links current RBS students with incoming first-year students and trans er students who are looking to gain support and encouragement regarding their academic and personal growth.

The Office of Student Engagement supports over 40 student clubs and organizations representing numerous major, cultural, and professional development and special interest clubs, three co-ed business fraternities, 2 honor societies and more. For example, the Deans’ and President’s Councils are cross-campus student forums whereby the Presidents of each RBS student organization meets with to discuss important RBS activities and report back to the Deans and other senior leaders of RBS on each organizations’ plans. This is an exciting way for student leaders to come together and plan school-wide events with support from the Dean’s Office to create community activities by students, for students.

Did You Know?

The Impact of Dr. Carter G. Woodson Did you know that Dr. Carter G. Woodson established Negro History Week in 1926 which is now widely celebrated as Black History Month?

Negro History Week took place during the second week of February to commemorate the births of abolitionist Frederick Douglass, who claimed February 14 as his birthday, and President Abraham Lincoln, who was born on February 12.

Historian Daryl Scott, Professor of U.S. History at Howard University, refutes this rumor, saying that “Black people gave us Black history month.” Specifically, he adds, “It was Woodson,” as in Dr. Carter G. Woodson, who established Negro History Week in 1926 to celebrate the contributions of African Americans to American life and history. Various Black communities throughout the U.S. already hosted Douglass Day and Lincoln Day celebrations to honor their work. “So when Woods comes along,” says Scott, “He takes those two unofficial celebration days and he says, ‘We’ll celebrate the week.’”

Three years later, Woodson founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History, now called the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), to provide Americans with information about how Black Americans had contributed to American history and culture. In 1976 the ASALH expanded the week-long celebration into a month-long celebration, and President Gerald R. Ford acknowledged it with a presidential proclamation.

Although Woodson never lived to see Black history week transition into a month long celebration for all those who paved the way, his contributions to the world will never be forgotten.

The MiniMBA Team Management Essentials was a smashing success. RBS team members from both campuses enjoyed the Virtual Live format, with its opportunity for meaningful learning and interaction in a safe and flexible envi onment. Topics covered included Conflict esolution, Communications, Problem Solving and other related subjects that affect all of us, every day! Learners commented on how much they appreciated the thorough and thoughtful teaching and group activities. Many learners commented that they especially enjoyed meeting their peers from other campuses and departments, and they gained valuable insights into every RBS department. Kudos to the newly minted MiniMBAs for their hard work and enthusiasm!

Facilities Meet 1WP’s Morning Security Officer Rafael Perez How long have you worked for Rutgers Security/PD? I just completed my 11th year here at Rutgers.

What are some of your duties here at 1WP? We as officers are the eyes and ears of the campus under the RUPD umbrella. That pretty much is our main responsibilities in RBS as well. Other duties include monitoring cameras, checking for RU ids to make sure only Rutgers affil ted individuals are in the building. We are responsible for building keys that are distributed to only certain people and hold an id until they are returned. Also we perform building checks as well as contact the proper departments if there are issues in the building using a work order system. We supervise student officers that assist us and on occasion partake in planned and unplanned fi e drills by clearing the building of all employees until everything is declared safe.

What would you do for a career if you weren’t doing this?

When I was growing up I followed sports with a passion (and still do) so my dream job growing up was to be a sports writer for any newspaper but instead I ended up in IT, which paid the bills.

What television show or movie are you ashamed to admit that you love?

The TV show would be General Hospital. Growing up in a Hispanic household my family would watch novelas or soap operas in English. So I latched on to viewing GH through my sister and followed for years mainly through the Luke and Laura adventures and all the other Port Charles Monday through Friday going ons. I won’t lie I would record episodes and watch it at my IT job because it kept me going on the 12 hour overnight shifts I was working...LOL!!

If you won the lottery, what is the first thing you would do?

If I won the lottery I would quit my job and travel the world with my lovely wife Nidia. Love to see different places. Plan B is spoiling my dog Gavin with luxury.

Event News Welcome Back Week It was a very hectic and exciting time at Rutgers Business School last week with hundreds of enthusiastic students, faculty, and staff eturning to campus for in-person courses, socializing with classmates and colleagues (safely and according to University guidelines, of course), and finally eturning to some sense of normalcy after almost two years of intense COVID restrictions.

It was a pleasure to assist RBS students who were unfamiliar with 100 Rock and 1 WP with directions to classrooms, lounges, and hidden departments (few RBS newcomers notice the signs to the MSIS/F&E corridor behind the 5th Floor Bridge in NB or the 2nd floor ounge at Newark). For many freshmen and sophomores who have been learning virtually for so long, January 24th marked their very first time inside an RBS building. ay!

Dean Lei and the RBS Leadership Team welcomed the RBS Family with a week long celebration full of delicious grab-n-go food options and lots of free RBS swag. Students and staff ali e appreciated the breakfast kits complete with fruit, yogurt, bagels, muffins, and ju e. The boxed lunches were also a big hit with poor Matt Peyrek almost being trampled by the stampede of hungry students. Approximately 3,000 reusable RBS water bottles were distributed as

part of Dean Lei’s Green Initiative, hundreds of lanyards to easily display IDs (as required by RU policy), post-it notepads, and countless RBS car magnets.

We are back and we are thankful!

RBS-NB Club Fair Students representing over 15 clubs at RBS-NB tabled at Monday’s spring involvement fair. The fair, held on the 5th floor lounge f 100 Rock, was an opportunity for students passing through between classes to meet clubs and other interest groups offered to them. Student leaders had a chance to recruit and promote their clubs to the student body and provide another chance for students to socialize upon their return to campus. RBS-NB is the proud home to over 30 student organizations serving our growing undergraduate body and representing groups from accounting and finan e to entrepreneurship and consulting as well as new interests such as blockchain and fashion.

Staff Shared Recipes Apple Phyllo Tart This recipe uses store bought phyllo dough for an easy, fancy looking dessert that is sure to impress. Not shown in the photo, but please sprinkle a light dusting of confectioner’s sugar right before serving. It is also nice to add raisins or chopped nuts, if desired, or serve warm with vanilla ice cream.

Ingredients: • • • • • • • • •

1 package phyllo dough (2 sleeves inside – Use both) – Defrost in fridge overnight 1 stick of butter – Melted 3 to 4 pounds tart apples such as honey crisp, gala, Macintosh or similar – Peeled and sliced thin ½ cup sugar 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 teaspoon nutmeg 1/8 teaspoon salt 1 Tablespoons softened butter – In very small pieces 1 Tablespoon of flour to sprinkle over p epared apples before baking

Instructions 1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

2. Using the melted butter, lightly grease the bottom of the pizza pan.

3. Unfold one sleeve of phyllo dough.

4. Working quickly with a pastry brush, lightly brush each sheet of dough with melted butter and then fold into thirds – The long way.

5. Place each folded sheet of dough kind of randomly in spoke-light fashion to cover the bottom of the pizza pan – Be sure about a half or third of each sheet extends beyond the rim pf the pan – This is what you are going to fold up later to enclose the apples – There is no right or wrong way to do this - You do not have to be fussy; just overlap in every direction so that the entire bottom of the pizza pan is well covered (this is the bottom crust of your tart) and all the apples will be covered and the filling will not leak out when baking.

enough, but if you are heavy handed with the pastry brush, you might have to melt a little more as you get to the end of the dough.

Mix the sliced apples, spices and tiny but of flour in a large bowl to coat all the apples well – Toss in raisins or nuts if using - Pour into the center of the prepared pizza pan – Press down and arrange the apples so that the entire surface is evenly covered – Sprinkle a little bit of flour over the apples and dot a few spots of the apples with softened butter.

Using the top-most pieces of phyllo that are extending beyond the pan, start folding them up in random directions to cover the apple filling, twisting a little bit as you go to get the crisp edges on top (as shown in the photo) – The angles those pieces are at when flat will determine how best to bring them up – Don’t worry if a few piece tear; just place them somewhere they’re needed Again, there are no rules to this; just go in different directions until all the spokes are brought up and around the pie filling to enclose almost all of it – Leave a small circle in the center exposed (see photo).

Place in preheated oven: 400 degrees.

After 10 minutes at the high heat, lower the temperature to 350 and bake another 45 minutes or until phyllo dough is golden brown and apples are tender – I check the tart half way through and if it looks like the center apples are getting dry, I cover only the very center with scrunched up aluminum foil.

Let the tart cool completely before covering with plastic wrap or foil for storage – If you cover when still warm, the nice crisp dough will get soggy and you don’t want that – Also, do not store in the refrigerator for the same reason – It is fine on the counter until after dinner or even overnight.

Right before serving, sprinkle with a light dusting of confectioner’s sugar.
