Are you an innovator, influencer or a laggard?

While interviewing Derek Mikulski, inventor of the ActivMotion Bar, he shared that one of his most pivotal learning experiences was understanding the “innovation model of acceptance.”

Put simply, this concept demonstrates how new technology, products and even ideas and methodology are progressively accepted, starting with innovators, early adopters, the early majority, the late majority and, finally, by the laggards.

Had Derek not understood consumer psychology and behavior when he launched his product, it could have very well cost him his company.

This made me think about how this concept applies to fitness professionals. Take for example, suspension training; until you understood and accepted the concept, the majority of your clients would likely have remained skeptical and apprehensive (the late majority or laggards).

We should be the early adopters our clients trust, with greater influence than celebrities or media. We must embrace this role with a great sense of responsibility; because of the omnipotent power of the media, it will take relentless hard work. It is imperative to continually learn the science of fitness and then integrate safe and science-based applications of these “new” modalities or concepts only if it makes sense for your clients and is authentic to you.

Consumers of fitness (whether it be us or the general public) are constantly inundated with new products, new ideas and new training methods. This is perhaps why words like “gimmick” and “fad” are synonymous with many fitness trends. We have the opportunity to have an even greater influence on those we serve by educating while still offering fresh, innovative ways to be fit.

Nothing comes without 100% effort. Fitness professionals need to put in the work without thinking that instant reward is a given. Hard work will pay off but not without the work.

What career opportunities do you see emerging for fitness professionals?

Small group training continues to be a growing opportunity. Both group exercise instructors and personal trainers can benefit from this emerging trend as 80% of health club members can afford small group, whereas only 20% of members can afford personal training. The industry is gravitating more toward programs that can measure and show results; small group training that offers fitness, body assessments and accountability is where the trend continues to strengthen.

It started at 18 years old. A young man from Southeast Michigan lost 80 pounds simply by educating himself and then decided to attend Central Michigan University to study, and become obsessed with, exercise physiology. Following graduation, he went on to work for Lifetime Fitness as a trainer and began working with clients. He made a keen observation of an opportunity in the industry and created a product to address that opportunity. He raised funding with the help of his clients to start the business all while training full time. He started the business, developed and brought to market the ActivMotion Bar that continues to influence fitness in a big way... and Derek Mikulski is not quite 30 years old.

Derek Mikulski, inventor and founder of the ActivMotion Bar, describes himself as “unconventional,” never one to follow the path that is already there. He is detail-oriented, obsesses about the small things and has a failure-is-not-an-option work ethic.

A year after he became a trainer, he saw a need for a modality that would challenge stability without having to put a client on an unstable platform. Whether it was for the athletes he trained or for his older clientele, he wanted to put instability in a client’s hands.

As if it were scripted to be the storyline of any quintessential American innovator, Derek started prototyping his idea in his garage outside of Detroit and continues to produce all of his products in the United States. He built a prototype of what is now known as the ActivMotion

Bar and brought it into the gym for his clients and other trainers to try. He instantly knew he had something that was scalable in the industry and could have a real impact on training programs. The ActivMotion Bar looks like a standard body bar, but there are ball bearings in the inner-core of the barrel that slide side-to-side as the bar is moved by the user, forcing the user to engage more muscles in order to stabilize the bar, offering a dynamic mode of disruptive training. As Derek describes, “Disruptive training progresses people through three phases of training, with the end result being increased core strength, improved mind-muscle activation and awareness and smart muscles that will protect and perform.”

whom he still partners with today. He filed for a patent and created a more professional-looking version of his prototype and then set out to prove the concept in the field. Perhaps most impressive in lending to the credibility of his innovation are the findings of a recent study performed by the University of Michigan’s Human Movement Innovation Lab. The research study focused on muscle tissue activation based on different fitness equipment. The study found that the ActivMotion Bar activates muscles 170% more than other static tools like medicine balls and standard body bars.

While reputable studies and research may have confirmed the validity and effectiveness of the ActivMotion Bar, when Derek initially took his product to the fitness market he faced the reality that the general public was

skeptical. It seemed as if they had the attitude that this was “another fitness gimmick.”

He realized that changing people’s minds out of the gate is an almost insurmountable task.

He and his team then focused on implementing the “innovation model of acceptance.” Market to the early adopters and innovators — those already conscious and aware, and who are usually the influencers that will create a trickle-down effect. In the case of the fitness industry, those early adopters and innovators are generally the fitness enthusiasts and fitness professionals who are educated and open to embracing new concepts. Derek experienced first-hand the critical lesson of taking the time to discover who your ideal core customer is, then create the messaging and branding to specifically market to them.

Derek emphasizes that owning an equipment company is so much more difficult than anyone can tell you until you experience it.

Coming up with the idea is the easy part; you have to prove it, get it accepted and then sell it. The greatest barrier is financial because of the significant expense required to bring a product to the masses. You can have a great website, pictures and marketing, but in order to sell it, people need to feel the product and experience it; and this means exhibiting at industry shows and conferences which can cost upwards of $10,000-$15,000 per event.

Derek also found that while his strength is attention to detail, the learning curve to understanding the manufacturing process can often result in lost time and money. Being that Derek started the business as a fitness professional, not an engineer or with extensive business experience, his business partners have been a vital part of navigating the processes and backend of the business in order to minimize risk and scale based on success.

Since the inception of his idea in 2011, Derek and his team of two partners, five employees and five master instructors have perfected the quality of the product and have introduced six different weight options of the bar. The company attends most major fitness events, offers workshops and has invested a great deal of energy into education. They have a clear vision and strategy to

goal mapped out to introduce two new products or programs every year.

While a day in the life of Derek is mostly unpredictable — whether he is working from home, at the office or at the manufacturing facility — one thing that is consistent is his early morning workouts. He even continues to work with a few of his clients in their homes. When asked if he ever questions why he continues to work as hard as he does to pursue his ActivMotion Bar vision, he unequivocally answers, “Never. When I’m a trainer, I get to work with one or a few people within an hour. With the company selling our bars all over the country, I’m impacting more people in one hour who are using the ActivMotion Bar.” Derek’s success isn’t simply because of a brilliant idea or even the result of good timing. Sheer determination, a relentless work ethic and laser focus is undoubtedly why Derek Mikulski will continue to innovate, influence and impact the fitness industry in a big way… and you can bet that he’ll do it in the most unconventional way.

PLAN FOR PROFIT: Understanding the real costs of business | By Cabel McElderry

I

know what you’re thinking. In fact, I can recall with ease the myriad of thoughts you’re having right now. All those delightful emotions about how great it would be to have your own space, how your clients would feel as they spent time in your facility, all the great services you can offer, all the great equipment and more.

The vision switches to the scene from the Matrix movie where Morpheus asks, “…and which will you take, the red pill or the blue pill?”

If you take the red pill you’re lost in naive elation, lost in the feeling of the project, not worrying about the costs and challenges of getting your dream business up and run-

ning. In nearly every case this fantasy turns to eventual tragedy and I’m certain comprises a great portion of the “9 out of 10 small businesses that fail in the first 5 years or sooner.”

If you take the blue pill the effect is immediately sobering. You begin to think about the costs, problems and challenges of bringing the idea of your dream business to reality.

It can be so sobering, in fact, that for many it may lead to the relinquishment or “failure to launch” of their dreams.

Viewed this way, neither option may seem immediately enticing. My hope is to influence your decision to lean toward the blue pill, but to alter the view to one that is still sobering, but realistic and responsible. You’re going

to open that dream business and together we’re going to work to change the world!

Starting a brick and mortar fitness business may not be an easy thing to do but with a few guidelines I’m confident I can help you make it a lot easier.

Step 1: Project your monthly operating costs. Think of everything and plan a contingency for the things you’ll still miss.

Consider your fixed costs as though you are fully operational, not as you will be today but as you will be months from now at its most expensive.

I use the term “fixed costs” in a modified way to describe things that will basically be the same each month: lease, utilities, even a

base amount for marketing. Additional marketing and wages (if you offer one-on-one training) primarily will vary.

By listing your fixed costs at your fully operational status you gain a scope for what your facility will be like at its most expensive.

For a minimum contingency I’d suggest planning for 15-20% over your total monthly operating cost.

One way to use this information will be in your lease negotiation. Since your lease is likely to be one of your single greatest expenses, negotiating a few months of free or reduced rent can really ease the burden of monthly operating costs. Reduced operating costs help with getting your business off the ground and allow it to take root.

This monthly operating projection will also help you price your services (don’t think start-up price but future regular price) and estimate how many active clients you will need to break-even or generate your desired level of profit. With this information you can work backwards to developing your launch promotions and marketing strategy.

Step 2: Project your start-up costs. Try to think of every little thing that you will need to spend money on one time to get your business open; and again plan a contingency.

Build-out costs are going to vary greatly depending on a lot of variables, but a good place to start is $15-25 square foot (unless you are doing a lot of work yourself) and it can easily be a lot more.

Don’t forget about permits, licenses and even the need for architectural drawings.

I know the expense of these things can be frustrating but they will save you a lot of money in the long run.

When looking at buildings, be sure to ask for a copy of the signage guidelines before beginning negotiations. Signage costs can vary; in my newest location, meeting the minimum signage restrictions suitable to our needs, after permits and installation, was almost $13,000!

In every renovation unexpected things happen. Where possible, I’d strongly suggest a large contingency, as much as 30% wouldn’t be unrealistic.

Unfortunately, start-up doesn’t end at your renovation and equipment. Below are a few things that clients have forgotten to plan for: } Business insurance } Legal fees for contract, lease, business registration and other document review } Utility and service provider deposits (firsttime merchant accounts often require sizeable deposits or delays in transaction deposits for example) } Office supplies and equipment

} Cleaning and miscellaneous supplies and equipment } Décor items and furniture } Internal signage and branding } Launch promotion costs } Wages for staff training time and casual opening labor } Initial operating capital (90 days minimum recommended) Now I know as you start to do a little math on your start-up costs it can leave you feeling discouraged. But don’t be intimidated. Here are a few useful tips that can really help to reduce or offset them: } Many commercial landlords are willing to negotiate a build-out subsidy and offset some or all of the cost within the terms of the lease. Often they have their own contractors and can get the work done quickly and to a standard they’re satisfied with.

I would suggest you first write your offer without asking for a subsidy as the rates often change when you do and it’s helpful to understand by how much. } Research government subsidized financing. In the U.S., look to the Small Business Administration and programs like the 7(a) loan. In Canada, look at the Canadian Small Business Finance loan. Though they may require an extended period and a number of hurdles, they can greatly reduce your out-of-pocket start-up expenditure regardless of your asset base. (In my personal experience by as much as 70-90%!) } Consider client financing through a “paidin-full” promotion. If you’re looking to open a business I’m assuming you have an audience. These fanatical followers generally have great belief in your mission; they’re urging you forward and with a carefully crafted message many business owners have been able to finance their entire start-up in a “pre-opening sale.”

By projecting your start-up costs with a contingency you ensure a reduction of stress later, and once you open your doors for business you want to make sure that day-to-day operations have your full attention.

The resulting expense lists from Step 1 and Step 2 are the foundation of your business plan. From there you can use that information to determine pricing, project a breakeven analysis, be elated about the idea of profitability, develop a marketing plan and a whole lot more!

Though the costs of starting a fitness business can be great, so are the rewards. Don’t stop here, take the time to write a business plan, seek the counsel of business owners

IS YOUR PRICE RIGHT? 3 STEPS TO SET THE RIGHT PRICE

BY ELSBETH VAINO f you are a personal trainer, you have a price, and for those of you who run your own business, you have to set that price. How much you charge might be the most important consideration for your business. Set the price too low and you run the risk of having a full schedule but not earning enough to pay your bills; set the price too high and you may never get enough clients to make ends meet.

One of the biggest mistakes personal trainers make is selecting their price based on what they think clients want to pay. Willingness to pay is a factor, but this approach ignores your financial needs. If that has been your approach, or if your business is not as profitable as you would like it to be, go through the following 3-step process to determine whether your prices are right.

STEP 1: DO YOUR RESEARCH People pay vastly different rates for goods and services depending on where they live, which means there is no single price reference you can look to for guidance. Fortunately, most businesses have websites, and many post their prices. Find the pricing for 5-10 businesses that offer personal training, either in your area or in a comparable area. In addition to noting their pricing, make notes about their service offerings and how you perceive the quality of their business. List them in order so that you can see the range of prices that your competitors charge and what they provide for that price.

Are there other gyms or trainers in a different city that are very successful? Do the same exercise, but look at their website and their competition’s websites. How do they fare in pricing relative to those in their area? How do their offerings compare?

STEP 2: DO THE MATH There are three factors you must consider when setting your prices if you want to succeed: 1. What are your costs?

Write down all of your monthly costs for your business. This may include, but not be limited to: rent, gas, utilities, phone and internet, printing, advertisements, garbage removal, payment processing, website hosting, online scheduling, staff salaries, continuing education, insurance, certification fees, equipment purchases and maintenance, loan payments, taxes and cleaning. Express all of these as monthly costs, as some will be quarterly or annual.

2. How much do you want to earn? This is one where many of us get in our own way and we pencil in a very modest salary for ourselves. It might be insecurity about our self-worth, or our upbringing has taught us that we don’t need a lot. In some cases, we tell ourselves that we are in this business to help people, not to get rich. Time to be honest with yourself: did you really start this business so that you could earn a small-to-modest income? Or would you like to help people and earn enough so you can buy nice things and travel to interesting places? You have to be honest in this step.

If you have a goal of earning a six-figure salary, then use a six-figure salary in this step. You’re allowed to want that. Make sure to express your desired salary as a monthly figure.

3. How many hours do you want to work?

Once again, be honest with yourself about this. Did you go into this business to work 12-hour days for the rest of your life? If not, how many

do you want to work? One important note for mobile personal trainers (either training clients in home or at a variety of sites) - you must subtract the hours you spend in transit from your total hours you want to work.

This is because traveling to a client site does take time and needs to be factored, but typically you do not charge directly for that time. Most of you did this as a weekly number. Convert it to months by multiplying by four. Note that there are technically 4.3 weeks per month, but for the sake of this calculation, use four. By rounding down the weeks in a month, you can effectively account for vacation and sick time.

STEP 3: ASSESSMENT AND REALITY CHECK Refer back to the pricing numbers you calculated in Step 1. Where does your calculated price fit relative to what your competition charges? Is it within the range?

If you are in range, congratulations! This suggests the financial needs and goals for your business are a good fit for the market.

The next step for you is to determine if you are in the right part of the range. Are you at the top end of the range? If you are, is your offering on par with what others offer there?

Are you offering a high-end training option? Is this how your current clients would describe you? Does your advertising (if relevant) reflect that? If yes, then you found your price. Similarly, if you are offering discounted training, and you are at the bottom of the range, then you are ready.

If you are either outside the range or you are not at the right place in the range, then your model probably does not match your clients. If this is the case, then it means you either need to change your salary or schedule expectations, or you need to reduce your expenses. Go back to Step 2 and make some adjustments until your price fits.

A very important part of this step is to ask yourself if this is feasible. Did you have to increase your hours in the equation above to the point that you will have to work much more than you can manage? Did you have to decrease your salary to the point that you will barely scrape by each month?

There are two primary reasons for doing a price assessment: 1. To make sure you don’t short-change yourself by setting your rates too low.

2. To make sure you don’t unknowingly design a business where you lose money each month even if you have a full roster of clients.

If this price assessment uncovers the former, then that is a great opportunity for you

No Limitations! Anytime, Anywhere Bodyweight Training The most amazing strength training tool we possess is our own bodyweight. Bend it, twist it, turn it, rotate it and lift it. You have your very own personal fitness center right within you, and you don’t necessarily need a machine when your body has the potential to be one.

Here are five bodyweight training exercises that do indeed twist, turn, rotate and lift. By shifting the position, you are adding load without having to add external weight. Perform each body shifting series with control and smooth execution, keeping in mind that the end point is only the beginning of returning to the start point. These exercises are easy, versatile and can be done at home.

Side-lying gliding hip lift Start in a side-lying position with your feet on Gliding discs. You can either keep both hands on the oor for support, or you may raise your upper arm for a more advanced option. Lift your hips up, pulling your feet inwards on the Gliding discs.

Repeat on both sides.

Prone plank gliding diagonal X

Start in a prone low plank position with the Gliding discs under your feet. Slide one foot out to the side, then cross your leg under your body with a bent knee to the opposite elbow.

Repeat on both sides.

Supine table to L with diagonal punch Start in a supine table position with fingers facing your feet. Lower your hips through your hands to form an “L” position. Lift again to a table positon, and punch your arm upward and diagonal across your body. Repeat on both sides.

Standing frontto-back diagonal curtsy lunge Prone spider pass-through

Start in a prone plank position. Lunge forward with one leg into a runner’s lunge. Lift the back leg, moving to supine position as your leg straightens in front of the body. Return to plank and repeat on both sides.

Start standing with one Gliding disc under one foot. Slide the foot out to a side lunge, followed by crossing the foot forward into a front curtsy lunge. Slide your foot back out to a side lunge.

Then, slide your foot into a back curtsy lunge. Repeat 8-12 times, then repeat on the other leg.
