Salt of The Earth This summer my family and I took a long weekend down to Mustang Island State Park in Port

Aransas, TX. We camped right on the beach just a few yards away from the gulf 's shore. Being this close to sea level seemed almost like a spiritual experience to me. Everyday I'd fall asleep and wake up to the saltwater hitting the shoreline. When I returned to work the following Monday I felt revitalized and blessed. During that weekend I felt more alive than I had all summer, which got me to thinking. Did I feel so great because of a much needed break, or was it because I have a connection to the ocean, a deep inner connection to the salt that was in the water and sand? Before we headed home my wife purchased a souvenir hat that read "Stay Salty," and by the literal since we have "Stayed Salty." For example, all the chairs we took still have bits of sand on them. If you were to taste these bits of sand you'd taste the salt of the earth. Anytime someone of high regard is mentioned, they are referred to as "Salt of the Earth." I hear this every week about our customers, probably because we have such a great customer base. By definition this term is used when referencing an individual or group that is considered as the best or noblest elements of society. To me, it means this and some. In the Bible, Matthew 5:13 says, "You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored?" To me, the answer is easy. The answer is Jesus. Salt has been a significant symbol and element throughout our history. Here it's a reference to a preservation of our salvation. Much like salt is used to save food from spoiling, Jesus is the preservative that saves our souls from spoiling. Salt is also symbol of purity, but this again goes back to its preservation qualities. Salt, particularly is used to reduce the corruption of meat, thereby making it edible longer. Christians themselves who follow Gods will and word will serve as preservatives of the human race by slowing the decay of the world around them. This fall I had the pleasure of hunting with a man, who with his salt, slows the decay of the world around him. 90 miles north of the Mexican border, near the Texas town of Sonora, lies the Red Mill Ranch. Here Tony Renfro sets hunters up for a chance to harvest a free range Aoudad or Barbary Sheep. It was a four day hunt, but I knew from day one that Tony was "Salt of the Earth." The funny thing is, if you were to ask me what exactly made him salt of the earth, I couldn't define one element. I just knew that Tony had my back while I was at his property, and that everything he was doing for me, he did so naturally and because he wanted to, not because he was being paid to do so. He was kind, welcoming, and respected the word of God. Tony worked diligently to ensure I got a bucket list trophy checked off, and he went above and beyond what any host or guide should do. Tony Renfro put his blood, sweat, and tears into my hunt to ensure it was a success, all of which have salt in them, so it might be easier to say he put his salt into it. I'll end this "Salt of the Earth" analysis with this thought. Salt, although vital to life and good for health to most things on the planet can be deadly if there's too much present. In conclusion too much of a good thing can sometimes be bad thing.

THE ART OF SUSTAINABLE HAY FEEDING IN A TOUGH ECONOMY Hustler Mounted Chainless LX105™ bale processor

L

ivestock feed represents the largest single cost – often up to 60 percent of the total operation spending. Maybe now is the time to rethink your feeding methods.

The average bred cow weighs about 1,200 pounds and typically consumes 2.5% of her body weight on short stem hay, or 30 pounds/day of hay. Over an 80-cow herd, that is 2,400 pounds of forage fed daily or over 180 tons during a 5-month timeframe. At $55/ ton1, you will spend about $9,900 over that period. According to a study by Dr. David Lalman of Oklahoma State University, “... the cows eating long stem consumed 1.8% of their bodyweight in dry matter (DM) intake and retained the same body condition.” 2 So imagine if you could feed out long stem hay reliably with a bale processor, how much could you save? Three essential factors can make a massive difference on your bottomline: hay wastage, forage quality, and the impact of your feeding method on pastures.

Drastically reduce your hay wastage

Maybe now is the time to think ahead and to re-evaluate the efficiencies of your bale feeding system. One popular method is unrolling the bale on the ground in a thick matt. Another method, bale processing, is to chop the forage and feed out in large, thick windrows, resulting in huge losses because the hay is quickly blown away or trampled because too much hay is fed in one location. Alternatively, the Chainless bale processors, such as the mounted Chainless LX105™ bale processor or the trailed Chainless TX205™ bale processor from Hustler Equipment are designed to maximize every pound of DM thanks to their unique, gentle teasing action, pulling the hay apart in long stems, making the feed more palatable for stock and allowing you to feed out the exact amount in a long, thin windrow, drastically reducing nutritional loss and hay waste.

Article by Lance Paskewitz

Preserve the goodness of your hay You already know that everything starts with the quality of your feed. Most operations put a lot of time, money, and effort into harvesting and storing the highest quality hay possible. Doesn’t it seem like you should carefully consider how you feed it out? Most of the nutrition is retained in the leaves and/or grain; why create a bunch of dust and pulverize your hay by feeding with a traditional flailtype bale processor? To maximize nutritional uptake, it is essential to gently fluff the hay out, so it’s not broken up and the nutrients destroyed and lost. The patented rotor system of the Hustler Chainless bale processors can help to achieve that result very easily in a limited amount of time. Though minimizing wasted forage and being cost-effective is a key concern, it is far from the only worry. For most livestock ranchers, the main reason for allowing unlimited access

Wondering how many pounds of hay your cows are eating each day is maybe the wrong question. You should be asking how much hay your cows are wasting every day. Hay wastage depends on harvesting and storage techniques, but more importantly on the way its fed out. Consider that more than 40% of your hay could be wasted3 because of losses associated with your feeding method. That’s like buying 100 bales of hay and then sticking a match to 40 of them! If we use the example we presented in the introduction, it means that in the best-case scenario, you are going to waste around 72 tons of forage this winter.

PUCKBOARD PLATFORM

OPTIONAL EVEN FEED ROLLER

The loading system on the Chainless TH205 is uses hardened steel bushings the same as what’s used on excavators for ultimate durability and long life and slop-free operation.

The reinforced steel platform is overlaid with 3/8” thick puckboard - the toughest poly material known to man. It maintains it’s slipperiness for ease of use, but at the same time can handle the impact of Hockey pucks at 105 mph while simultaneously enduring the coldest temperatures of the arctic!

Designed to accept our new Even Feed Roller for breaking apart highest density square bales into tighter windrows, and easier operation with round bales. It has a built in quick release system to switch between modes.

REINFORCED PLATFORM FRAME TH205 is built for durability from the ground up, with a double reinforced platform frame design you can be guaranteed of years of trouble free operation.

PATENTED AXIAL ROTOR Patented axial rotor with centralizing paddles which keep the bale positioned in the center of the feeding chamber to minimize waste and provide better grip on soft center or rotary cut bales

HYPAFLO WIPER Designed to clean the rotors more efficiently, the Hypaflo wiper panel minimizes blockages and ensures that hay drops outside the wheel tracks to avoid being flattened into the mud. Panel can be easily released for easy cleaning. OVERSIZED WHEELS Massive flotation, and cushioning the TH205 comes standard with larger diameter, wider 400/60R15.5 wheels in trac-grip pattern for extra traction, and a smoother ride.

to hay is the time and convenience. A study4 conducted by Dennis Hancock from the University of Georgia compared the time expended feeding dry hay to six groups of heifers. The result of this study shows that using a Chainless bale processor is by far the quickest way to feed out hay; even faster than a traditional hay unroller, a hay wagon, or even a hay ring.

Manage your pasture with your feeding routine The benefits of using a bale processor are not all about hay savings. Robert Kallenbach from the University of Missouri5 found that for in 1.9 tons of high quality hay, your cows will return $86 in nutrients to the soil in the form of fertilizer. Based on the same figures we presented in introduction, it means that you could recycle up to $8,150 worth of fertilizer (manure) through cows fed on grass hay.

Old permanent pasture can be up to 25% less responsive and absorptive of nutrients in the soil, such as nitrogen, than newly renovated pastures. Regular reseeding would increase pasture productivity, but it’s a huge time and money investment. Ideally, feeding in a new part of the pasture every day in a long narrow windrow gives every animal equal access to feed and the hay bales drop their seeds into the ground in the process. Your whole pasture can be reseeded for (virtually) free and with no additional time spent while at the same time reducing compaction by keeping the animals spread out. If you want to increase your pasture production and herd health along with reducing your hay wastage, you should rethink your feeding method immediately.

A NOBLE CALLING

Soak It Up: Steve Swigert assists in adding irrigation lines in a Ugandan field. Assisting with agricultural needs such as this is just one part of the mission. The program also offers medical care, education, and spiritual discipleship. Photos Submitted By: Steve Swigert

few years back, if one needed to find Steve Swigert, most days he’d be working in the Noble Foundation’s Agricultural Division. If you weaved through the building towards the back hallway you'd find his old office. You would have known it was his, because some of the pictures and knickknacks seemingly didn't match the man or the industry. Sure there were photos of his two grown daughters and wife, Vicki, but there was also memorabilia from the University of Oklahoma (which he usually wore). If you paid close attention there was a small, Africa-shaped memory box on the corner of his desk, and pictures of a lush green land that is clearly not Oklahoma. Steve is an unassuming man, one of those guys that would do anything to help anybody. He has a bright smile, a hardy laugh that strikes a pleasant tenor, and 8

a grey mustache that could win a contest. For more than 22 years, Steve served as an agricultural economist for the Noble Foundation, assisting farmers and ranchers in the Southern Great Plains with financial advice and business planning. He now provides these same services for Great Plains Kubota! His background is completely Ag (He holds two masters degrees in Ag-related fields and managed a farming operation for almost a decade before he started at the Noble Foundation). His livelihood is Ag. His passion is Ag, and as it turns out, Africa. For almost 25 years, Steve has circled the globe, participating in and leading more than 30 mission trips for faith-based organizations. Two years ago, Steve’s local church, First United Methodist in Ardmore, Ok., came to Uganda to support the Watoto GPL Winter 2021

Childcare Ministries (Watoto is Swahili for “children”). Ardmore physician Mike Carnahan led an effort to construct a new medical clinic in one of the Watoto villages. Steve was all in. This particular mission trip, however, would be different.

Watoto background

For a little background, Watoto Childcare Ministries sprouted from the Watoto Church in Kampala, Uganda. Thirty years ago, Gary and Marilynn Skinner who were poor missionaries, not billionaires as I originally assumed, arrived at Uganda believing they were called to bring life to a dying land. This couple had zero resources, only a few connections, and three children in tow. The couple founded Watoto Church during the then leader Milton Obote’s, while in his second tenure as president/ dictator. To put this in perspective, in the early 1980s Uganda resembled America’s Wild West except with oppressive poverty, massive corruption, and genocide mixed in. Hundreds of thousands of people were openly imprisoned and murdered, while the AIDS epidemic further unraveled an already tattered societal fabric. However, these atrocities didn’t happen over night. Decades of coups and genocide left Uganda broken. Obote was eventually exiled, and the Watoto Church grew steadily. One day, Gary Skinner visited a woman who had lost 6 children and a husband to AIDS. Soon after the Skinners founded the Watoto Childcare Ministries. The concept behind Watoto is direct and profound. The Watoto model focuses on orphaned children and vulnerable women. The program offers physical care, medical intervention (including treatment for HIV/ AIDS), education (formal and technical), trauma counseling, and spiritual discipleship. The goal is raise the next generation of African leaders, who have a solid moral compass and academic/technical training. Watoto leadership believes, and is being proven right, that you can change a country from within if you provide capable leaders. Today, Watoto Childcare Ministries has more than 2,500 children (ages 3 months and up), living and learning in villages across Uganda. Once the children are accepted into the program, they are a part of the family for life. War and AIDs have left 2.6 million orphans in Uganda, of which Watoto can only assist 1 percent. Their goal is to reach up to 10,000 children within the ministry. This where Steve Swigert and Kent Donica, an agriculture producer from southern Oklahoma, came into play.

A NOBLE CALLING culture project. What they found was a calling that matched their particular skill sets. After the first day of touring the facilities, Steve and Kent realized the profound impact a sustainable agricultural program could have on the ministry. The idea was simple: help Watoto raise as much of its own food as possible. This would put vegetables and protein into the mouths of the orphans, while providing products to sell at market, thereby generating a revenue stream and further fund the mission. Steve and Kent sat together that first night, with tears in their eyes, knowing the substantial task before them. “It’s like trying to take a sip from a fire hose,” Steve said. In the beginning Steve and Kent helped the organization map out a plan to better utilize their land resources and to build infrastructure, while providing valuable education to Watoto workers about crops and animal husbandry. Since their initial trip Steve has returned to Uganda eight times in the last 24 months. Each time, he answers more questions, and provides counsel and support, while helping trouble shoot everyday problems. If he doesn’t have the expertise, he knows where to find it. Often, Steve calls or emails the Noble Foundation office, and his fellow agricultural consultants to provide the answers. Between each trip, Steve, Kent (who has returned twice), and their church have marshaled resources. Agricultural producers and business owners, who hear the Watoto story, have donated equipment that is loaded into giant containers and shipped around the world. Additionally, special fundraisers have yielded funding for the missions agricultural needs. What started with a single goat barn and 30 goats has now blossomed into an agriculture endeavor very near to full scale production. Each Watoto sight has a different project. The goat barn at Suubi now holds 120 goats and provides enough milk for the Watoto babies at home. The once-never-imagined chicken facility at Buloba is mere months from going online. The Buloba site also houses a feed mill and a 15,000-

bushel grain storage facility. The eggs will provide protein to the children, as well as be sold for profit. The grain storage will save the organization tens of thousands of dollars by holding grain for use in the dry season. The 200-acre vegetable garden at Lubbe produces corn, rice and vegetables for the villages, and at the urging of Steve, Watoto is preparing to turn 200 acres of high quality land into working farm. The speed of change has awestruck all involved. “I’ve seen hundreds of operations progress and grow, but nothing has ever come together so quickly. It’s been less than two years. It's truly a God thing," Steve said. The relationship between the Noble Foundation and Watoto grew as well this year. Supporting sustainable agriculture and advancing the industry has been the cornerstone of the Noble Foundation mission. As the organization furthers its international reach, the connection with Watoto’s sustainability and educational efforts was a natural fit. Watoto, the Noble Foundation and two agricultural universities, Oklahoma State University and Texas A&M University collaborated on a pilot program that will send one skilled student from one of the schools to Uganda for three to five months of on-the-ground experience. The Watoto-Noble Fellows will be integrated into all aspects of Watoto’s agricultural production system, including animal management, crop production, land stewardship, agronomy, water management, harvest, storage, distribution, food system development, marketing and economics. Things have changed from eight years ago to today. The work has grown and many children are being fed. And although Steve and friends returned to Uganda in October 2021, Steve now serves the customers and employees of Great Plains Kubota. This year Great Plains Kubota joined the mission allowing Steve to continue feeding children in Uganda. If you would like to get involved with this mission, please contact Steve at sswigert@gpkubota.com

Small Town Peanuts Thriving through Adaptation

By Alex Robles

Along every highway in Oklahoma you find “Small

Town America” and, too many times, these towns are mostly reminders of times long ago. Empty buildings paint the corners along the thoroughfares that once were the epicenters of our rural communities. Too many have fallen victim to the urban centric growth that population research has shown to become the trend of contemporary America. With this in consideration, when we find a business that succeeds and thrives in our rural economies, it gives us a renewed hope that our small communities aren’t forsaken. That brings us to the epitome of this tale, Mitchell and Mitchell, a business, a family, a friend. Mitchell and Mitchell is a 3rd generation “Farm Service Center & Garden Store”. It is currently owned and operated by Kyle and Ron Jones. Kyle Jones is the son to Ron and Judy Jones, and Ron is the sonin-law to John and Dorthy Mitchell. John and Dorthy were the first to start the Mitchell and Mitchell business and bring it to Marlow. Today you will find a number of services that the business provides, including: Feed, Seed, Fertilizer, and many other farm related services and products. However, what the company offers today is very different from what started the business. This is what is so beautiful about this business and it’s ownership. It's a testament to their business prowess and a lesson for many of us not only in the business space, but it teaches us a lesson about life and the need to become flexible and adaptable. “Every success story is a tale of constant adaptation, revision, and change.” - Richard Branson This story is no different and it finds it beginning at the start of the 1930s. John and Dorthy Mitchell were cotton brokers from the Wynnewood area. They would buy cotton from the Marlow area and that is what ended up bringing them to this corner of Oklahoma. In 1938 John and Dorthy bought a building to store cotton in Marlow. They also used this to store grain, such as wheat and milo. They became a large broker of grain and transitioned this from civilian to governmental work by aiding in the efforts of WWII. They worked with governmental agencies to store cotton and grain for war efforts and continued this through the 1950’s after the war. John found business opportunities during this time by identifying the need for peanut farmers. This was 12

brought to light when John saw opportunities to utilize federal programs that provided some subsidies for farmers. These programs were focused on growing peanuts. John had a passion for partnering with farmers. This is a core value that has been maintained throughout the business and is still a driving force in today’s practices at Mitchell and Mitchell. John invested in more buildings and infrastructure in Marlow and ended up with a warehouse that could store 1,900 TONS of peanuts. This ability brought in the need to add a spur to the railroad track that allowed John Mitchell to load train cars with not only peanuts but also grains that would eventually make their way to Dallas. His gained knowledge of governmental programs and his passion for partnering with his rural neighbors lead him to help create local awareness of these opportunities that would eventually usher in a thriving peanut industry around the Marlow area. This business model would grow and take them all the way to the late 1990s. Along the way, John would seek out opportunities where the business could build upon its relationship with the farmers in its community. They would invest in dryers for the peanuts that farmers would grow. They would also use this for locally grown grains and grass seed. However, John's ambitions didn’t stop at the business, he also was heavily involved in the community. He and the business would be given a number of awards including the “Outstanding Citizen” award and the “Free Enterprise” award. John also became the mayor in Marlow in the early 1970s. The Marlow grown peanuts would also end up making a mark on “The Big Stage” when donated peanuts were given as a snack during a broadway show called “Moonlight and Magnolias” by Ron Hutchinson. This was also the timeframe when Mitchell and Mitchell would invest in their first Kubota tractor. This tractor would be used to load bulk fertilizer or move products around in the warehouse. What Ron had been most impressed with is that they used this machine from the mid 1970s until 2019 and in that time, they never “wore out the engine”. It got many repairs along the way, but it never left them “hanging”. They ended up replacing that tractor with a new model M5660 and they continue to use a Kubota tractor with pride. However, we all know that times change and Mitchell GPL Winter 2021

and Mitchell hasn’t been impervious to the need to adapt. The peanut farming subsidies started to fade away in the late 1990s. This era was also marked by the passing of John Mitchell. However, the business was left in the capable hands of Ron Jones who took over the business in 1997. Ron, born in Marlow in 1932, was first challenged with evolving the business from a peanut focused model to something that is more sustainable in the current farming climate of the surrounding Marlow area. This ushered in a new focus on the expansion of bulk and sacked feeds, bulk fertilizer, and new gardening products. Also, as mentioned earlier, Ron has been very committed to looking for ways to partner with local farmers. They buy seed from them when possible to sack and resell, giving them an opportunity to profit from their long hours and hard work. They also offer the ability to clean any grain. Ron still today can be found at the store but he now has help from his son Kyle. Kyle came back to the business around 2010 to help his dad. Kyle had grown up around the store and worked there many summers. He often reflects fondly on getting to load rail cars with grains and peanuts that would eventually make their way south. So when the time came to come back to the business, it was with great pride that Kyle answered the call. You will always find Kyle and Ron at the store, helping customers and aiding the local farmer. Kyle is now at the helm and running the business and Ron often remarks that “I get to ride the train, but I no longer get Pictured: A giant auger that once to blow the whistle”. He has given that responsibility moved peanuts is still anchored to to his son. the peak of their storage building. The weight of that responsibility isn’t lost on Kyle Photos By: Reed Boettcher and Ron, and the proof that they both looked to the efforts of their forefathers for guidance is apparent with the trials and tribulations that Covid brought to all of us. Again, the need to adapt was evident and again the challenge was met and conquered. During this time they offered “Curbside Pickup” to better accommodate the health concerns of their customer base. They also adjusted hours and offered “scheduled pick up” after hours if the need arose. Three generations of a family that made a commitment to put down roots in a community. A community that has given and also benefited from the efforts of the Mitchell family and their descendants. A family that has passed down the torch from one generation to the next, while keeping a consistent focus on what they believe to be vital to their success, “Partnering with their local farmer”. Adapting and adjusting along the way to find solutions to problems, answers to questions, and finding success while doing it. Thank you John, Ron, and Kyle for your partnership with Great Plains and your commitment to the community that we share.

STATE OF THE BRAND NOT FAKE NEWS By Bill Clark

GP has some news to relay to our friends and customers. We are excited to announce that GP will be

moving further into western Oklahoma with the acquisition of Lindley Farm Equipment in Cordell, OK. Rick Lindley and his family have been in the farm equipment business in the Cordell area for two generations. We appreciate the confidence Rick has placed in GP and we look forward to delivering our brand of service to a new group of customers. The big news with most equipment dealers today is the “supply chain issue.” That’s a new fancy term for “you can’t get what you want fast enough.” This too shall pass, but as a dealer, we are being told that it will probably be 2023 before we start to see equipment inventory back to somewhat normal levels. The good news is that Kubota has moved much of its manufacturing to the US, and Kubota has plans to invest in even more US manufacturing. Kubota construction equipment is now being manufactured in Salina, Kansas along with Great Plains and Land Pride manufacturing in Tipton, Ellsworth, Lucas, Assaria, Kipp, Abilene and Enterprise, KS. Kubota's investment in KS along with their increased manufacturing capacity in OH and GA means that, in the near future, the majority of the equipment we sell will be made in the USA. Not only are we proud to know that Kubota equipment is made in the USA, but having production in the geographical center of the US will alleviate at least some of the “supply chain issues” we are experiencing today. This past year I’ve been asked literally hundreds of times why we are so short on equipment. Some were even concerned we were going out of business! My typical answer is; this is what we are being told, or this is what I’ve read. As Will Rogers said, “all I know is what I read in the papers”. But, do I really know what I’m being told in any of the media is the truth? Is the news really fake? I’ve become very frustrated the past few months trying to discern what is the truth concerning Supply Chain Issues, Voting Fraud, Critical Race Theory, Vaccine Mandates, Climate Change, Border Security, Ivermectin, Censorship of Speech, etc. The list could go on and on. It seems that truth to some is whatever helps advance their own personal or political goals. When there is no basis for truth, there is no moral basis for right or wrong. So, it becomes easy to report or repeat whatever it takes to accomplish an agenda. By the way, fake news started with Satan putting his spin on God’s first command in Genesis chapter 3. Satan asked Eve, “Did God really say ‘You must not eat from any tree in the Garden’?” Sadly, fake news has become acceptable by many in today’s world of relative truth. But, truth is not relative, it is absolute and based upon God’s word. So, what is the truth? That is the same question that was asked by Pilate after Jesus said in John 18:37, “To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.” Unfortunately for Pilate, he didn’t understand that he was looking Truth in the face. Charles Spurgeon said it best, “Discernment is not simply a matter of telling the difference between what is right and wrong; rather it is the difference between right and almost right.” Some of the issues are so black and white that it’s easy to have discernment. Beware though, fake news tries to be “almost right” and almost right is still 100% wrong.

Strive For Hay Feeding

Efficiency Ruminants have a distinct advantage compared

to other livestock because of their ability to process highly fibrous, otherwise non-utilizable, feedstuffs into a marketable product. They also thrive in geographic regions that would otherwise go underutilized. Oftentimes, this conversion advantage is only referenced to specific, industry-related outcomes such as body condition, parturition, and/or weight gain. However, a bigger picture perspective points to the societal benefits these animals possess. This is especially true for cattle based on their contribution to human-consumable protein (per capita beef consumption is approximately 55 pounds) and the overall magnitude of the cattle industry’s economic impact ($88.25 billion in receipts). Considering beef ’s broader contribution and the likelihood that hay and pasture costs comprise between 30 to 35 percent of a spring-calving cow herd’s total production cost, it is imperative for operations to strive for efficient capture, allocation, and utilization of forage resources. This can be done through a systematic grazing plan and an efficient supplemental feeding program that includes hay as a potential option. Whether hay is raised or purchased and regardless of quality, it’s important to ensure we get the most from its consumption. If hay will be supplemented, there is no substitute for a nutrient analysis. Testing is preferably done prior to purchasing and especially before feeding to determine any major deficiencies and additional nutrient needs. Your allocation is also important and can alter the overall efficiency by which the hay’s “stored” nutriGPL Winter 2021

ents are utilized. Most often, allocation consists of a hay bale placed in the middle of a pasture, or next to mineral and a water source. Although this is commonly the case, it isn’t the most efficient means of feeding hay. Minimally, use a bale ring to maintain the integrity of the bale for as long as possible and to reduce losses caused by trampling and contamination from urination and defecation. To further reduce wastage, consider labor availability and minimize the amount of hay offered, but be sure to meet the daily intake needs of the animals being fed, especially if a hay ring isn’t being used. The method matters... The delivery method of forages stimulates intake and affects consumption. For example, driving into a pasture brings cattle up to a feeding area, which stimulates greater feed and supplement intake compared to simply setting out a bale of hay. Many producers are trying to further improve the overall efficiency of feeding hay and are investigating other means of allocation. Bale processors are one such mechanism of choice and are used to deliver hay in both pasture (windrows or troughs) and pen environments. Here at the Noble Research Institute, we have been processing hay at our Oswalt cattle facility for the last year and feeding cows and calves in windrows and bunks. Vermeer Corporation has helped us with technical assistance and with evaluating equipment and accessories. From a strictly nutritional perspective, processing (lightly chopping) hay improves utilization by allowing easier access to structural and nonstructural carbohydrates by the rumen’s microbial population. This is especially true for roughages that are lower in quality. Digestibility typically improves 10 to 12 percent anytime a forage is processed. Operationally, the processor is very easy to use and does a good job of uniformly chopping most roughage sources, including Bermuda grass, alfalfa, soybean, rye/Rye grass, Switch grass, and native grasses. Overall, we have witnessed less wastage when “windrowing” the hay for cows on pasture, but we have had some difficulty feeding in our concrete bunks, especially during high winds. As with any piece of equipment, we continue to learn more and better ways to use it. A good example is using the processor to cover newly constructed pond dams and right-of-ways, where it worked very well and raised organic matter in those areas.

Cost versus benefit... As one would imagine, the biggest potential downside is the machine cost. This must be weighed on a case-by-case basis depending on the size of the operation, access to resources such as labor and capital, and the value placed upon convenience. Overall hay quality may also be a consideration. For large cattle operations, the expense can be spread across a greater number of head, providing a greater economy of scale. Backgrounding operations have the ability to use a bale processor more often throughout the year. For smaller producers, convenience may be an important consideration. With good equipment care, a bale processor should last for many years. Processing of feedstuffs isn’t a new idea. Using a bale processor is just a new way of accomplishing the task.

7 REASONS TO BUY A PROCESSOR

By Maddie Rehl

VERSATILITY

Process anything from hay to cornstalk bales to lay down windrows, bunk feeding, create material for total mixed rations, or blowing bedding into shelters.

CONSISTENT DISTRIBUTION

Process round and square bales in uniform windrows, while preventing uncontrolled fall through.

INCREASE EFFICIENCY

Easily control bedding, which can improve the health of livestock. Many bale processors even have an additional cutting stage to reduce the processed hay down to a more optimum precut material size.

BETTER FOR LIVESTOCK

Processing hay eliminates the dust, mold, and mildew that accumulates in a bale, increasing palatability and digestion for livestock.

REDUCE WASTE

Control the levels of consumption and reduce hay loss from sorting and manure that happens around a feed ring.

LESS STRESS

Gives each cow equal feeding room with consistent windrows compared to the competition around a feed ring.

EROSION CONTROL

Processors can be used to save time and effort on spreading bales to control erosion. GPL Winter 2021

Taking advantage...

Are you considering making a purchase before

the end of the year? At Great Plains Kubota, we are prepared to help you get the equipment you need to make your operation successful. This year it will be extremely important to make that decision earlier than before the very end of the year decision. With the inventory challenges across the country, making the decision to make changes needs to be done as early as possible, because you are required to take possession of the equipment before the end of the year to consider it a valid current year purchase for tax purposes. So get with your tax accountant as soon as possible to determine if a purchase at this time will benefit you from a tax standpoint. There are many other reasons for making that decision other than tax ones, the primary ones are Productivity—you need to do something faster and more efficient, for instance you are farming or taking care of cattle after working an 8 to 5 job. Or maybe you are trying to get over more acres in a shorter amount of time. Cost Avoidance Equipment fails or need major repairs. When a piece of equipment gets to a certain age or number

24

of hours to becomes a higher risk for costly repairs, if that machine can be traded for a newer unit before that happens then that cost and time lost will be avoided. Also, the value of the trade-in will be significantly higher if the piece of equipment is still in working order. Reliability Agriculture is a business that is driven by the need to do things timely. From getting hay baled at the proper time to getting the crops planted when you need to, most of work on a farm or ranch needs to be done in a timely manner. To do that, producers need equipment that will be reliable to get the work done. With all of that said, there are challenges of operating in today’s environment, each operation needs to take advantage of every opportunity to help make the operation more efficient. In many cases that can be done by operating equipment that has less breakdowns, uses less fuel, and in general keeps the operation moving along. Also, each operation needs to take advantage of the tax rules, such as Section 179 if they have taxable income to deduct from. This is why it is important for each producer to meet with their accountant early this year.

GPL Winter 2021

of section 179

With Section 179 of the Federal Tax Code, an agricultural taxpayer may elect to expense all or part of the cost of any Section 179 property and deduct it in the year the property is placed in service. The Section 179 deduction limit for 2021 was raised to $1,050,000 with an equipment spending cap of $2,620,000. Using Section 179, you can write off the entire purchase of qualifying equipment up to the deduction limit. This includes both new and used equipment. In addition to equipment purchases, other eligible items may include computers and computer software (off the shelf), business vehicles over 6000 lbs (GVW), breeding livestock, office equipment, etc. In addition to Section 179, producers can elect to use bonus depreciation. Bonus depreciation, which is generally taken after the Section 179 spending cap is reached, will again be offered at 100% on eligible new or used assets acquired in the current year. Bonus Depreciation Under the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, first-year bonus depreciation at 100% will remain in effect until January 1, 2023. After that, the following phase-down with occur:

GPL Winter 2021

• 80% for property placed in service after December 31, 2022 and before January 1, 2024. • 60% for property placed in service after December 31, 2023 and before January 1, 2025. • 40% for property placed in service after December 31, 2024 and before January 1, 2026. • 20% for property placed in service after December 31, 2025 and before January 1, 2027. Impact on Your Operation The potential savings from Section 179 can have a significant impact on your equipment costs. If you’re considering an equipment purchase in the current tax year, you need to consider using this option. For example, a $125,000 tractor coupled with Section 179 can reduce the true cost of the purchase to $81,250, freeing up $43,750 in cash savings. This sample calculation assumes a tax bracket of 35%. Before making any large capital purchases, it’s a good idea to consult with an accountant or tax adviser to ensure deductions are claimed according to the Section 179 code. If a capital purchase would be beneficial to your operation, the staff at Great Plains Kubota would appreciate the opportunity to see how we might be able to serve you.

A LOOK AT THE NEW KUBOTA RTV520

The new Kubota RTV520 is on the market and

already making a statement. Standing above the competition for its innovation, this Kubota midsize utility vehicle was selected as the winner of the Pro Tools Reviews' 2021 Pro Tool Innovation Award in the Outdoor Power Equipment - ATVs & RTVs category. The all new RTV520 builds on the quality and reliability of past Kubota RTVs. The bold new look and redesigned features sets the RTV520 above the rest with its highest standard in performance and comfort. Kubota-Built The Kubota RTV520 is perfect for everyday performance. Equipped with over 17 horsepower, the new powerful 2-cylinder liquid-cooled EFI gas engine ensures efficiency and reliability throughout the day, even in those cold-weather months. Compared to the past RTV500 model, the new RTV520 is more powerful and ready to tackle tougher jobs. The Variable Hydrostatic Transmission (VHT) provides smooth and powerful acceleration over any terrain. The dynamic breaking with the single-pedal operation brings ease to those jobs requiring frequent stops. The heavyduty cargo bed measures 40.6” by 33.6” with a 440 lbs. cargo capacity. Kubota did not miss on the details with the wide opening cargo bed bringing ease to loading and unloading and the heavy-duty steel cargo tie-down hooks. Jobs made easier with the standard trailer hitch, the RTV520 has a towing capacity of 1,168 lbs. These key Kubota-built features are what make this midsize utility vehicle stand out in the performance category. With improved suspension and softer seats, you can enjoy a smooth and comfortable ride in your RTV520. The new 5-link rear suspension system

By Maddie Rehl

increases the rear suspension stroke by 30% and the front suspension stroke by 20%, preventing the vehicle from bottoming out. This robust and reliable system improves comfort, not to mention the 30% softer padding in the redesigned contoured seats. The operating experience has never been smoother with the new 360-degree crank and two axis balancers to reduce the vibration from the engine. Without fail, you will enjoy every ride in the RTV520 with a quieter engine than past models and even the competition. Kubota made it their focus in the RTV520 to protect the key components of the vehicle to reduce maintenance. Enhanced durability with not only the standard Kubota Design Excellence, the RTV520’s design protects the underbody, beneath the cargo box, and operators’ station from the unexpected. The radiator also features a screen preventing mud and grass from sticking. Maintenance made simple with the large cargo bed opening and closing angle of 54.9 degrees, you can quickly and easily access the underneath components. Kubota emphasizes worry-free ownership in the new design and features of the RTV520. What stands out most in the RTV520 is its size. At 54.7” wide and 74” tall, the RTV520 can maneuver in tight spaces with ease. Easy to turn with a tight turning diameter of 21.7 feet, you can work in those narrow sites where bigger utility vehicles cannot reach. You can customize your RTV520 by enclosing the cab and adding a front guard. Enhance the versatility of the vehicle by adding LED work lights or the cargo bed lift kit. For those projects at home or the job site, the Kubota RTV520 has the capability to get more done in more areas, with a focus on ease and comfort.

Compact Power: The new Kubota RTV520 provides everyday performance with worry free ownership. Plus it's smaller sizes allows it to access areas other RTV's can't. Photo Courtesy Of: Kubota Tractor Corporation GPL Winter 2021

THE CHUCK WAGON

S B I R " O N I D " By Michael Summers

Short ribs or "Dino" ribs are

not the easiest cut of meat to smoke, but when smoked correctly the reward can be awesome! First of all, the grade of meat will make a huge difference. It's always good to know where your beef comes from, so I suggest buying from a local supplier or market. One indication of a good slab is that there will be a lot of the brisket flat still covering the rib meat. This brisket portion is the coveted part that big eaters will attack first. The underneath section is covered by an undesirable layer of fat and thick sinew. However, once you get through these two bottom layers you'll find that the fat covered, protected piece of meat will be as tender and juicy as anything as any cut.

DIRECTIONS

1. Start with the good ole 50/50 salt and pepper rub with a touch of garlic salt added just for good measure. Using coarser salt will help reduce the "over-salted" taste. Additionally, a seasoning binder such as oil or mustard can be used, but I've found dry to be just fine. Finally, a brine or injection can be used, but I don't think it's worth the time or trouble.

2. By now your pecan wood should be fired up to about 230 degrees which means it's time to throw the Dinos on, meat side up, and let the smoke roll! This is a long process much like a brisket. It's very important the connective tissue be broken down and rendered off.

3. Once the desired color has been achieved flip the ribs over and let the bones take the brunt of the heat. The

color should resemble a deep mahogany bark that, when touched, weeps clear juices. The main difference between a tender short rib and a tough one, is that it's reached the minimum internal temperature of a 200 degrees. Look for the density or feel of butter when using a meat probe which is usually between 200 and 210 degrees.

4. Finally, decide whether or not to use the Texas Crutch (Tin Foil). This step usually depends on how soon you want to eat. Slice em how you want to as there are no instructions. Just go caveman on them and use your bare hands.

5. Serve with or without your favorite sauce. GPL Winter 2021
