Editorial fall fun

have I mentioned that Fall is my favorite time of the year?. When I say Fall, I really mean October through S oDecember. Not only is the weather usually perfectly dynamic, but the season is packed full of festivities and

holidays. I have to mention that the transition times between holidays needs to be a little longer. One day there are grave yards and grim reapers on lawns - the next Reindeer and Nativities. I try to make this time of year last as long as possible. My thought is to do as much as I can while I can, but what happens is that my family and I stay so busy that the season just flies by! Below are activities my family enjoys doing this time of year, and although they might not be exactly for you, they are easily customized or interchangeable. Point is get out and enjoy the world around you. Staying inside is for January and February. Go hunting. This is one activity that definitely isn’t for everyone, but if you’re a hunter introduce a friend or youngster to the sport. Having no property of my own, I’ve always relied on public lands and recently the success of drawing in on a controlled hunt. For all of you hunters reading this who don’t put in for the controlled hunts; do so. Even those who have leases and private lands should apply for controlled hunts, because the registration fee is at least a small donation to the ODWC. This October I was lucky enough to draw into the McAlester Army Ammunitions Plant and it was an experience to say the least. I might have lasted until the last day had I not been sleeping on the ground, infested with seed ticks, fighting off wasps, stepping on copperheads, and trying to stay hydrated. Overall I would do the hunt again, but only later in the hunting season. Check out the local attractions. So it has become an annual tradition with my family to go to the Halloween Festival at the Castle At Muskogee. Halloween may not be everyone’s favorite holiday, but the atmosphere is something like that out of a movie set. Plus, this attraction offers festivals during Christmas and other times of the year as well. Literally, there is something going on every weekend during October. Speaking of October, Oktober Fest is something I’ve always wanted to attend. There are usually several local varieties, and I would suspect they all have something good to offer. Get outdoors and visit a state park. There are many parks and recreational areas in Oklahoma, and I’ve only begun to scratch their surface. This fall my girls went to a smaller state park, Red Rock Canyon near Hinton. Although small and seemingly forgotten, its landscape is completely unique. Of course there are always scenic drives to take. Pretty much the entire eastern half of the state offers beautiful fall foliage to view. You don’t have to be an outdoor enthusiast to enjoy nature. Fall is one of the best times to enjoy Oklahoma landscapes, so grab a flannel and go! Boomer Sooner or Go Pokes which ever works for you. I usually try to make it to a couple of college football games every season. Even if you’re not a sports fan, the spectacle that these games offer is something to be seen at least once. Pick up pecans. This is an activity I’ve been doing for the last decade out of necessity. However, I’ve started to enjoy looking for pecans. I think their color and taste is representative of the weather. When it comes to picking up pecans there are usually plenty for everyone. I get the fact that they are a source of food and shade but who’s bright idea was it to plant them in town? My back yard is pretty much a giant pecan tree which sheds the equivalent of a small tree on a weekly basis. Still though I save money, and on good years even make a little. Great Plains Kubota Partners With The Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Association To Help Grow Membership OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLA., NOVEMBER 13 – Great Plains Kubota has partnered with the Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Association to help grow membership during the 2017-18 membership year. “OCA Leadership set a goal to have 5,000 annual OCA members by the year 2020,” said OCA President, Weston Givens. “Great Plains Kubota, a supporting agriculture business, was quick to offer help in ‘spurring on’ our membership Drive that we call, Stampede to 2020.” Great Plains Kubota will provide membership recruitment incentives in the form of store dollars towards the purchase or lease of Kubota equipment as follows: • $2,500 to the member who recruits the most new members • $5,000 drawing to the member of the Top Hand Club • $5,000 drawing to a new member • $2,500 drawing to a member who recruits at least one new member “I am a Kubota dealer and a rancher, so teaming up with the OCA to grow the number of members in our Association just makes good sense” said Bill Clark, President of Great Plains, LLC. Most ranchers, like us, depend on equipment to manage their cattle operations, and while we’re excited for the opportunity to earn new business, our main purpose of supporting the OCA is to help establish a solid future for the beef industry in Oklahoma.” The 2017-18 OCA membership year runs from July 1, 2017 to June 30, 2018. Store dollars will be drawn for and presented during the 66th Annual OCA Convention and Trade Show on Saturday, July 21, 2018. The OCA is the trusted voice of the Oklahoma Cattle Industry. OCA is the only voice that speaks solely for the cattlemen of Oklahoma and represents beef producers in all 77 counties across the state. The OCA officers, board of directors and membership encourages you to join us in our advocacy efforts to ensure less government intervention, lower taxes and a better bottom line. For more information about OCA membership, the theft reward program or activities call (405)235-4391 or visit www.okcattlemen.org. At Right: The large inside display space and booth at the 66th annual OCA convention and trade show provided attendees the opportunity to meet Great Plains Kubota. In addition to the inside booth, Great Plains Kubota exhibited an outside display of Kubota equipment for convention attendees. This show marked the fourth year for Great Plains Kubota to attend and contribute to the OCA, and its initiatives. “We tried a Volvo, a Bobcat, a Deere, and the Kubota. After taking all four and rotating them through our crews, everyone wanted a Kubota.” Michael Boatman - VP of MPC

MARKWELL PAVING COMPANY

MAKING THE SWITCH By Reed Boettcher

D

own time is something Markwell Paving Company (MPC) can not afford. With multiple jobs operating at numerous times, and at various locations across Oklahoma, a quality compact track loader is a valuable commodity to the paving crews of MPC. While interviewing Michael Boatman, Vice President of MPC, it was easy to see that when it came to equipment, brand loyalty was something he took very seriously. His office was neatly decorated with his favorite sports team, and miniature model equipment adorned his shelving. However, his shelves were devoid of Kubota miniatures because it wasn’t until a couple of years ago that Boatman decided to make the 8

switch from John Deere track loaders to Kubota SVLs. The decision was made in part by; customer devotion of Great Plains Kubota’s outside salesman, Ernie Sikes, the flexibility GP Rents offers, and the reliable service department of Great Plains Edmond. the machine One of the benefits of using a compact track loader such as the Kubota SVL is its maneuverability in tight spaces. Working on the side of the highway on a daily basis is a dangers job, and the constant flow of traffic provides little room for MPC crews to work. In some cases, their workers have even been hit by cars. “The versatility of Kubota SVLs is second to none. We’ve owned Kubota equipment over a year and a half

GPL fall/winter 2017

now, which is basically since Ernie started with GP. We actually tried to demo one from another dealer but they wouldn’t allow us too. Another great thing is they make about every attachment you could think of for these machines. Hi-Flo planners and brooms are the primary attachments we use on a daily basis, and of course a standard bucket. They also offer compact power. I can practically have a mini-dozer that can be hauled with a regular truck,” said Boatman. THE FIT, THE FEEL, THE FUNCTION There wasn’t much Boatman could say negatively about his Kubota SVLs. When asked if he could change anything on the loader he had this to say.

GPL fall/winter 2017

“When I’ve got work to do at my house, and I’ve got a Kubota sitting on the yard next to a John Deere, I’ll take home the Kubota every time. The reason being is everything about them is 100 times better than John Deere has ever done. We thought John Deere had a great machine until we used a Kubota. It was like switching from a Pinto to a Mercedes. The only thing I would change is to have a factory installed keyless start, and that’s really just for security purposes.” THE POWER OF RENTALS For every Kubota loader MPC owns they rent two more. By utilizing the Kubota fleet of GP Rents Edmond they can manage their workload on the fly. Continued on pg11 9

switch continued... Some months may require several units, while other months may require none at all. Regardless having a Kubota that’s ready to use at a moments notice is a major plus for their work. Boatman elaborated. “The great thing about the Kubota rentals is we use those machines on a as needed basis. I don’t want to load up inventory on my end because each job requires a different amount.” Not By Machine Alone A good machine is only as good as the dealership that provided it. Furthermore a dealership is as only as good as its representatives. This was one of the determining factors for Boatman and MPC, as Ernie Sikes has been a long-time friend of MPC and rep they could trust. Boatman knows he can depend on Ernie to deliver on his word. Sure Kubota’s compact track loaders are superior, but if you can’t rely on the company and its employees then your destined for down-time. Boatman explained further. “If the relationship with Ernie wasn’t there, we would probably still be using John Deere skid steers. We still use other Deere machines because our relationship with them is good as well, but by Ernie building this relationship and trust it lead to a demo and ultimately sales and rentals. I’ve known Ernie for 20 years, so when Ernie approached me it was an easy transition. I can call Ernie at 8 or 9 o’clock at night if there’s an issue, and I’m not worried about bugging him. The relationship with the company and reps is just as important as the durability of the machine. Price is something we always consider, but it’s not everything.” Making the switch From cattle production to road construction there’s always someone making the switch. What it boils down to is the need for dependability in a world that’s unforgiving of down time-dependability with the equipment and the dealer. Change is hard, and when making equipment purchases decisions thorough research and insight is needed. For Markwell Paving Company all that was needed was the word of a rep, and a head-tohead demo. The rest took care of itself.

DERRELL MEEK

the light began to fade on an early Autumn eveA sning a lone rider crossed the plains. As the chang-

ing wind rushed past his face, the sounds and smells of his land relaxed him. The feel of his horse he was riding never felt so familiar. His brilliant white hair would have been easily recognized by anyone as he approached his barn from what was to be his final ride. This was his ride, and his alone. It cleared his mind and he was at peace. Derrell Meek was one of a kind: A leader, yet a team player. He knew how to cut up, but more importantly he did what had to be done. He knew a lot of people and knew a lot of people well. His opinion was valued, but he only gave it at the appropriate time. Craig Whipple, knew Derrell his entire life, but as Service Advisor for Great Plains Ada, Whipple grew closer to him during the last fourteen months as the two worked together in the service department, which says something about Derrell as a person. As Service Manager Derrell executed one of the most stressful and difficult positions of a dealership with ease because he could connect with people. “Derrell and I never had a cross word the whole time we worked

12

together. I don’t think we will ever have another employee like Derrell because of who he was and how he operated. I’d be so wound up some days and he would look at me and say, “Just let it go.” He could sure dissolve a situation,” said Whipple. Derrell enjoyed taking care of land and livestock, as well as hunting, roping, and building spurs, but most of all he loved spending time with his grand kids Tucker, Hadley, and Jade. He was a helpful person in both his professional and personal life. “He got me back into roping,” Whipple continued. A few months ago my girlfriend Melisa and I started hanging out with Derrell and Cheryl and we started riding together. We always had a good time. We were a lot alike. We even wore the same hat size, 7 3/8.” Derrell was also GP Ada’s Site Manager, and when first asked whom he would nominate for employee of the month he responded without hesitation. “Craig gives 100% every day. I can’t say that for any other employee. He is constantly working to keep things moving in the Service Dept. I couldn’t ask for anyone with a better work ethic than he has.” Tanner and Tagus Meek

GPL fall/winter 2017

honored their father by adding even more personal insight to the man that Derrell Meek was. For the employees and our GPL readers it’s an honor to read what his sons had to say. For us to truly appreciate the man we knew as, Derrell “Pa” Meek, we would need more time. Pa is the epitome of hard work, perseverance, and dedication to serve others. With a simple handshake, one would feel the wrench and hammer calluses. With a hug, one would feel sincerity and generosity emerge from his arms. Derrell cherished his grandchildren, often planning out and purchasing horses, deer stands for hunting season, and of course, candy for each kiddo, as necessary. As a Father, he was our answer to any question. He had zero college education, but had the combined knowledge of engineers, psychologists, mechanics, horse trainers, engravers, artists, veterinarians, and machinists alike. For those who were fortunate enough to encounter and/or know this man, you knew a fair, sincere, selfless, and Christian man with a heart that may have left physically, but will continue to give infinitely. Derrell knew the perfect fishing plugs for any spot. After work, he would often cast out his lime green spinner and catch huge fish that always avoided our hooks, but he’d always release them for the other kids to catch. As sons, we never knew him to sit down in a recliner until at least dark had fallen. And as sons, we also knew that he could exit a recliner faster than lightening if we ever back-talked our mother. Dad expressed his love and compassion in many ways. He taught us valuable lessons in life with the most important one being how to live your life according to God’s plan and having integrity with everyone you come into contact with. He also taught us how to work very hard and to take care of the things we acquired because, they didn’t come easy. Dad displayed what a husband should be by loving our mother unconditionally, and always going above and beyond to be what he expressed in his vows. Dad, where do we start? The incredible legacy you left here on Earth will never cease to thrive. You and Mom both provided brother and me with every possible opportunity that we could ask for. You were the father that all men should be, and you were a friend that everyone needed. Your words “get your work done and then you can play,” still ring ever so loud in my mind. Your love was immense, and your soul was full of sincerity and selflessness. To say there were only a few effected by your passing would be lying. We can only strive to touch as many lives you did. I still feel as if you are just on a hunting trip and you’ll be back in a week or two. I still look for you to be feeding cattle or tinkering with a set of spurs every time we pull up at the Continued on pg14 farm and believe me I always will. There will never be

Tribute continued...

a day that goes by, (until we meet again) that I won’t think of you or stop to listen for your voice. We will continue to share your memory with the grand kids and instill in them the great things you gave to us. The rider’s body is laid to rest at Swan Hill Cemetery, but his soul rides on through the darkness of that memorable last Autumn ride, and into the light of the Lord. The memories of Derrell’s profound life that are entrusted with his family and friends will bring smiles and tears. His spirit, well it lives on in those that learned by his example, and were lucky enough to blessed by his love. Derrell Dean Meek, 56 of Ada, died Sunday, October 8th at a local hospital. His funeral services were held at Ada First Baptist Church on 2:00 p.m. October 12th. Pastor Reno Dye officiated. Derrell was born April 20th, 1961 in Tucson, AZ to Virgil Lavoid and Delores Ann Pittman Foster. He graduated from Byng High School and on March 27th 1981 he married Cheryl Lynn Hunt. They had two sons together Tanner and Tagus. Derrell was a member of the Fittstown Baptist Church, and was a Master Mason, and one heck of an auctioneer and spur maker! Derrell, or “Pa”, was devoted to his family and dedicated to life on the farm which brought him complete happiness. He could make long road-trips with Cheryl to watch their grandson’s little league games, and then spend the rest of the night hauling hay with his sons. Derrell did more and talked less, and his actions were a testament to this. It wasn’t just his family that he gave his time and talents too. He spent many hours volunteering his skills as an auctioneer and spur maker to local charities and events. Again, this was the type of person Derrell was. He gave more than he received. Survivors include his wife, Cheryl of the home; two sons, Tanner Meek and wife Julie of Bixby, and Tagus Meek and wife Shelby of Fittstown; his mother, Delores Foster, of Ada; two brothers, Steve Meek and wife Claudia of Sulphur, and Mike Meek and wife Paula of Holdenville; two sisters, Debbie Allen and husband Johnny of Kingston, and Stacy Hopper and husband Freddie of Ada; four grandchildren, Tucker Meek, Hadley Meek, Jade Meek and a grandson to be born in March; and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Virgil Lavoid Meek.

exceptional, and has favorably impacted my business with the efficiency and increased productivity it provides. After using about every manufacturer’s equipment out there, I found that Kubota equipment actually made my daily “work life” much easier. The model that introduced me to the Kubota line, was the SVL75 track skid loader. The layout and performance of the machine was much better than others I had used in the past. So, when it came time to buy a new tractor, I decided to give the Kubota a try. The folks at Great Plains Edmond spent a lot of time walking me through the different models and options. I’m surprised I didn’t have my own coffee cup there (LOL). I finally decided to go with a Grand L6060 model with many extra features. Those extra features were well worth the expense. In many cases, the increased functionality has cut my job times in as much as half. Also, with a great inside layout and some of the extra amenities it makes a ten hour day seem like five. With the hydrostatic transmission, top and tilt kit, third function and an extra rear remote, it’s like having a skid loader and tractor all-in-one. If I were asked to design a grading tractor, this would be the exact layout I would select. I use the L6060 for building pads and arenas, final grades, equine and rodeo arena maintenance, and around the ranch daily. It’s the perfect machine for laser grading with a land leveler. I also love the M7060 for jobs that require a larger tractor. When I need an alternative piece of equipment, or just have a machine down, I turn to their rental department, GP Rents, to fill the gap. They have a large variety of different equipment and an attachment for just about anything your job might require. Everyone at Great Plains Edmond has been amazing…from helping me decide which tractor that will fit my needs, to providing advice or answering questions that come up along the way. Their service is hands down the best there is. I generally service and maintain my own equipment, but when I do need to get it in the shop, they always work to provide a great turnaround to get it back on the job. Their customer service is second to none. Pretty soon my whole fleet will be Kubota, as I replace my existing equipment piece by piece. I live and breathe Kubota now, and I’m excited to share my experience on a daily basis with anyone who is interested. It’s amazing the number of inquiries I get about Kubota products, and I always love talking about them. Since my college days, I’ve bled orange for Oklahoma State…and now Kubota. I am proud to endorse such great products and service.

COW CALF

Muscle Cars & BIG Cows

By Bill Clark

human nature to want to make I t’sthings bigger, better and faster.

I was in high school in the late 70s and the now, highly collectible, muscle cars of the late 60s had been around long enough that used models were becoming affordable. I really wanted a 1969 Mach 1 Mustang with a 429 Cobra Jet. There was just one problem, (other than the fact that my folks were totally against me driving a hot rod), the Oil Embargo of 1973, and later the Oil Crisis of 1979, made muscle cars like the Mach 1 Mustang unaffordable because the high cost of fuel it took to feed them. When I started college the cost of gasoline was over $1.00. So, driving a muscle car that got five m.p.g. wasn’t a practical solution, a fact that made my folks very happy. Instead of a 69’ Mach 1 Mustang, my college commute was in a 72’ Chevy pickup. The Chevy required a little maintenance, but it got nearly 20 m.p.g., and it was just what I needed to feed cows with after school. For the past few decades, most cattlemen have tried to achieve as much performance from their cow herds as possible. The thought behind this was weaning bigger calves would equal higher profits. After all, what cowman wouldn’t enjoy telling the guys at the coffee shop he just weaned a set of 700 pound calves? These high-performance herds were achieved primarily by introducing bulls with more frame size and more milk. However, much like the high-performance Mustang I longed for, these high-performance cows got poor gas milage because they required lots of expensive feed, (fuel) and maintenance. The real problem is that for several generations we’ve kept heifers out of these highperformance bulls, and Pictured: The 1988 Denver Grand Chamnow have a cow herd pion Angus Bull was “Dameron Linedrive.” that is too big and inefHe weighed 2527 pounds at 32 months of ficient. I’m not the only age. He was a Frame 10+ bull. Photo From: Harlan Ritchie’s Beef Review cattleman with this page on the Michigan State University opinion. Dr. David Website: https://msu.edu/~ritchieh/historical/ Lalman of Oklahoma cattletype.html State University tells us that for every 100 pounds we have gained in cow weight in the past, we have only added 6 pounds of weaning weight. Combine this with the most recent push by many seed stock producers that promote carcass genetics and you’ve

EFFICIENCY

22

created what has been referred as a Genetic Paradox. You simply can’t select primarily for growth and carcass genetics without losing; feed efficiency, reproductive performance, soundness, etc. We’ve developed cattle that perform very well at the feedlot and on the rail, but we’ve lost some of the essential traits that make a cow calf operation profitable. We’ve done so during a period when annual costs for maintaining a cow have more than doubled as you can see in the accompanying chart. Within the next few issues of Great Plains living we’ll present a series of articles that will address cow efficiency. Cow efficiency, in it’s simplest form, is the percentage of a mature cow’s weight that she weans. In other words, a 1200 lb. cow weaning a 600 lb. calf would be 50% efficient. Most industry experts would admit that a larger cow is less efficient than a smaller cow, and there’s plenty of scientifically backed data to support this claim. It’s much more difficult to wean a 750 calf out of a 1500 lb. cow than it is to wean a 500 lb. calf out of a 1000 lb. cow. But, let’s assume that there’s no validity with cow efficiency, and you have the choice to run 100 - 1000 lb. cows on your ranch, or 67 - 1500 lb. cows on your ranch, both being approximately 100,000 lbs. of cows. At last week’s market in Oklahoma City, assuming you had 50% steers and heifers, you could have sold 100 – 500 lb. calves for $825 or 67 - 750 lb. calves for $1031. The lighter calves would have grossed $13,423.00 dollars more! This is one reason I think cow efficiency has become such an important issue for the typical cow/calf producer today. In fact, you can’t hardly pick up a cattle magazine without finding an article on cow efficiency. Our next few articles will discuss the history of the cattle business in the US, what is lacking in our cows today, and how we can correct some of the inefficiencies in our cow herd while increasing sustainability. Even if you don’t agree with me, I hope it at least sparks some thought on how, as cattlemen, we can make our cow calf operations more profitable.

By Reed Boettcher

summer, the winter months can be especially L ike hard on equipment. Damp weather and freez-

ing temperatures can have damaging effects but even more so long periods of equipment not being used can be even more devastating to your equipment’s performance. The dramatic changes from early fall into winter can happen suddenly. One minute it’s hay season the next it’s the dead of winter. If it’s one thing the service departments of Great Plains Kubota stress it’s understanding your machine’s owner’s manual and keeping your equipment clean. In short, preventative maintenance goes a long way. For some, servicing equipment is all in a days work, but for others lack of time or knowledge can create maintenance barriers. This winter, as in the winters past, Great Plains Kubota is offering a Winter Service Special. This service incentive offers extra value within a complete service package for customers who take advantage. Ultimately, these offers spread out the impact of the spring service. Other than major services there are everyday things equipment owners can do to weather the colder months. Jamie Anderson of Great Plains Ada, gave insight with 10 tips from the shop! 1. Keep It Clean - The easiest thing any equipment owner can do if storing equipment during the winter is to clean it before storing. 2. Lock It Down - Most tractor owners use their machine all year. However smaller garden tractors and compact models might not be used as much. When storing tractors always lock the clutch pedal down. This keeps the clutch disc separated from the fly wheel and prevents it from sticking. Do this anytime you let the tractor sit for over a month. 3. Check Anti-freeze - If possible always check the anti-freeze with a hydrometer to make sure that you’re covered in the freeze zone for your state.

WINTERTIME

TECH TIPS Tips On Preparing Equipment For Winter

4. Care For Fuel - Always check the fuel filter for water, and it’s a good idea to add a water inhibiter to the fuel. If storing, keep the fuel tank full to prevent condensation. On smaller gas engines such as lawn mowers, add Stabil and allow to run for ten minutes. Then shut the fuel line off and allow to run until it dies. 5. Grease Points - Grease all pivot points when storing tractors for the winter. 6. Cab Care - Not matter what the equipment may be, if it has a cab and cab filter, make sure to always keep that filter clean. 7. Hay Tool Treatment - The liquid in grass can become corrosive over time. So, always clean bale chambers, cutter bars, and even power-wash tarp covers. This should have already been done by the winter, but depending on the season, equipment use can always vary. 8. Frequent Checks - It never hurts to start equipment periodically if it is sitting for several months. Likewise, check the fluids when performing random starts. 9. Winter Service - If time is tight take it to the pros, and take advantage of service savings in the winter so you can get in a go when you’re ready. 10. Get In And Go - To a degree we all expect our equipment to work when we need it to. To ensure this takes place take the necessary steps to help you start spring right.

The Chuck Wagon holiday tenderloin

beef tenderloin with cranberry balsamic sauce You are sure to keep up your stamina during the hustle and bustle of the busy holiday season with this beef tenderloin roast recipe that is served with a cranberry balsamic sauce. Beef roasts such as the tenderloin make large meals for big holiday gatherings. Instead of a dry turkey or overpriced ham try a new take on holiday meals with a tender, juicy beef roast.

INGREDIENTS 1. Whole Beef Tenderloin Roast (4 to 5 lbs.) 2. 2 Tablespoons Chopped Fresh Thyme 3. 1 Tablespoon Pepper 4. 1/3 Cup Balsamic Vinegar 5. 3 Tablespoons Finely Chopped Shallots 6. 1 Can (16 Ounces) Whole Berry Cranberry Sauce 7. 1/4 Teaspoon Salt

DIRECTIONS 1. Heat oven to 425°F. Combine thyme and pepper; reserve 1 teaspoon seasoning mixture for sauce. Press remaining seasoning mixture evenly onto all surfaces of beef roast. 2. Place Roast on rack in shallow roasting pan. Insert ovenproof meat thermometer so tip is centered in thickest part of beef. Do not add water or cover. Roast in 425°F oven 45 to 55 minutes for medium rare; 55 to 65 minutes for medium doneness. 3. Remove Roast when meat thermometer registers 135°F for medium rare; 145°F for medium. Transfer Roast to carving board; tent loosely with aluminum foil. Let stand 15 to 20 minutes. (Temperature will continue to rise about 10° to 15°F to reach 145°F for medium rare; 160°F for medium.) 4. Meanwhile prepare sauce. Combine vinegar and shallots in small saucepan; bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer 3 minutes. Stir in cranberry sauce; bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer 6 minutes to blend flavors, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat; stir in reserved seasoning and salt. 5. Carve Roast into slices; serve with sauce.

BEST BUCK CONTEST his year Great Plains LLC decided to try something new. Well, we’ve tried a lot of new things over the Oct. 1st - Jan. 15th year, but this event would give both customers and non-GP customers a chance to interact with us. We like to hold on to tradition and the personal connections that made up the simpler times in America. So this hunting season we decided to host a “Best Buck” contest where proud hunters could come in to our Kubota dealerships and share their story and harvest. In addition they have a chance at winning some awesome prizes! Saturday mornings at the local fire station are a thing of the past. Now hunters check their deer in online a share the pictures on social media. We’ve had a great response for the most part, and other than one hateful comment on our Facebook page the community has really enjoyed taking part in this event. The “Best Buck” contest is running the entire hunting season and for those pre-registered before the cutoff date of Sept. 30th there will be 4 great prizes given out based off a panel of judges that choose the best looking bucks brought in. All the contestants have to do is bring their buck to GP during business hours and take a picture with our sign and dedicated Blaze Orange hat. So far it’s been a fun experience but it’s also been a tough hunting season. Hot temperatures early in October and a good acorn crop have made the entry numbers compared to the registration numbers low. The season isn’t over though, so happy hunting to all of you hunters and look for the winners of the Great Plains Kubota “Best Buck Contest” on our Facebook page!
