Embrace the Cold - Cold Weather Activities

inter has a way of keeping people indoors where it’s warm. I say don’t let negative temps and wind chills slow you down, because there is plenty of fun to be had in the winter months of Oklahoma.

In the winter there are a few activities I do to satisfy my outdoor urges. Here’s my list of frigid fun, and tips to make cold weather more enjoyable!

Cold Weather Camping - Camping in the cold is all about keeping warm and eating well. Half the fun is getting bundled up and simply enjoying the warmth of a campfire. Plus, camping in the “off-season” is a great way to dust off the gear and get it ready for warmer weather.

Freezing Fishing - Fishing is a year round sport.

This time of year I capitalize on three forms of fishing that either can’t be done or aren’t as productive during warmer months. First, and possibly the most fun is snagging. With a sandy bottom river and the right rig snagging can produce a day full of fun and BIG 4

fish. My father-in-law introduced me to snagging on the Red River for monster alligator gar. Since then I was hooked. Trout season is also in full swing during the winter. My favorite spot is Blue River. The trout at Blue are bigger and more plentiful than ever. Trout fishing is a great way to fish with lighter gear and simply enjoy scenery and perhaps a picnic by a waterfall. Lastly, shallow water jugging for big blue cats is a must do, but it isn’t for the cold natured. Being out on the water will undoubtedly get you wet.

It’s rough conditions, but the payoff is BIG, BIG, catfish.

Predator Hunting - What fun would the outdoors be without hunting. Predator hunting is at it’s peak in the winter and it’s a great transition between deer and turkey season. All this is fun, but really I’m ready for warmer weather.

New Television Show Tours Oklahoma Ranches

new Oklahoma TV show entitled “The Land Doc Doctors” is now being filmed and is set to air on OETA starting at 8:30 A.M. on April 6, 2014. The program will give viewers a behind the gate look at some of Oklahoma’s most beautiful and interesting ranches and farms. In addition, the show features a do it yourself segment that demonstrates various approaches taken by featured landowners. The show is hosted by Dr. Kelly Hurt of Allen, Okla. and features the latest Kubota tractors and Land Pride implements from Great Plains Kubota.

According to Dr. Hurt, “A lot of times, we tend to think the experts are the folks in research or academia, when in reality, some of the smartest, most experienced practitioners are the landowners who are out on the land trying new and exciting things. That’s why we named the show “The Land Doctors” in the plural form. Since so much of this activity occurs on private properties that are seldom seen by anyone other than family and a few close friends, much of this work is unknown and unappreciated. We wanted to create a show that opened up these properties to viewers so that motivated landowners could learn from one another.”

The first season of 13 original episodes will air twice weekly for 13 weeks and then go into reruns for a subsequent 13 weeks. Episodes will cover diverse and unique land issues from creating a trout stream to exploring Oklahoma caves. In addition, the show will visit ranches owned by notable public figures from former Governor Frank Keating to David 6

One episode even relates real estate development work in Costa Rica to a common need for fencing here in Oklahoma. In addition, the program will cover some Oklahoma history as it looks back to the rough and tumble days of the early Oklahoma oil fields.

Doctor’s Orders – Take Advantage of Down Time to Service Equipment

I

t is easy to get a bad case of cabin fever when the cold weather, snow and rain of winter descends on Oklahoma.

It’s hard to be motivated when the temperature is below freezing and the wind is howling. However, for the lucky ones who have a nice shop, this is a perfect time to catch up on some equipment maintenance.

During the spring and summer, we find ourselves so busy trying to get everything planted, plowed and mowed that we sometimes lose track of our maintenance schedule. That’s what makes this a perfect time of year to catch up, with no grass to mow, hay to bale or garden to be tended, you should have a little extra time to maintain (change oil, check fluids, grease) and repair your equipment.

Make sure to check the number of hours you have run your tractor since last changing the oil. Also, it is GPL Winter 2014

Orders Cont. really easy to forget or overlook grease fittings, make sure and review your owner’s manual or at least do a thorough inspection to make sure you are finding them all. All of that and a quick look at the air filter and you should be ready for spring. Just remember the old saying, “Go slow and grease often!”

You’ve heard it from the Dr. now take it from the techs.

Featuring Jamie Anderson here are a few simple things you can do this winter to insure your Kubota equipment will perform the way it’s supposed this spring.

Below I’ve highlighted what is important, and given some personal recommendations. As always read and know your owners manual. I can’t stress the importance of the owners manual enough.

If your Kubota has been sitting all winter start by opening the hood and inspecting for rodent and bird nests. People under estimate the devastation rodents can do to wiring and the fact they may have rodents. It only takes one to send a machine to the shop. After a good visual inspection check your oil and hydraulic levels, air filters, and hoses.

It’s also a good idea to inspect your sediment bowl to make sure nothing harmful will go through your system when you do start your engine.

Lubrication is the lifeline of any machine. After you’ve checked your lubricates and properly greased your points I suggest cleaning your machine. If you start and end jobs with a clean machine you’ll get better performance. Another important fluid to keep in mind is your fuel.

Clean fuel is a must and cold fuel can gel. Diesel 911 is a great additive that prevents gelling.

After you’ve inspected and cleaned your machine it needs to start and run prior to use. Before you start to use it regularly start the machine and let it get up to operating temperature. Then run through the functions. I don’t suggest letting machines set idol because it is extremely hard on them. These few tips will help your equipment when preparing for regular use. If you know your machine must sit idol invest in a battery maintainer. Block heaters are good to have as well. The easiest thing you can do if you are letting your equipment idol is start it one to three times a week and let it get up to temp. Lastly if it isn’t in use block the clutch so that the clutch disc don’t seize to the fly wheel.

What you put into your machine is what you get out of it. Do the simple steps to take care of your equipment or I can take care of it after the fact. The ladder is usually more expensive. Be safe, know your manual, and have a great spring season! greatplainskubota.com

Kubota Equipment Now Available For Rent

reat Plains is now renting Kubota equipment at their Ada Kubota dealership, and will be renting at all other stores by as early as summer.

The company is no stranger to renting equipment. Great Plains was in the equipment rental industry for 11 years before selling Great Plains Rent-All to Volvo a few years ago. Unlike before Great Plains will only offer Kubota equipment to rent through their dealerships.

Customers will be able to rent Kubota tractors, Track Loaders, Excavators, and Utility Vehicles.

Great Plains manager Will Clark commented on the decision to begin GP Rents.

“We have a background in renting so it’s easy for us, and great for customers. Renting is a cost affective way for some users who have limited use of heavy machinery. By offering the rental option we meet the needs of seasonal or situational customers. Renting Kubota equipment is also a great tool to attract new customers to the benefits of these machines, said Clark.”

A

bit of hindsight on our adventure started with the need of a small yard tractor to help clear snow off our 1/8 mile driveway at our newly acquired old place, located in central Alberta, Canada. The decision was made with a twist, why not enjoy some history and scenery of a state or two in which we have never visited in the United States. So with a few Kubota model's in Pictured: The mind, we started an onLineham’s late model line search and found just tractor is used to clear their long 1/8th mile what we were looking for, driveway. an older 25 hp, four wheel Photos Submitted drive L-Series with a loader in Ada Oklahoma sold by Great Plains Kubota. The tractor was well used and needed some work, however this helped keep the cost down for we are starting out in the equipment department. The drive with a truck and flat deck trailer was 27 hours one way and our friends and family thought we (or more so I) were nuts, but we must say it was quite enjoyable. There is a lot of baron land between us, for example east Colorado and Kansas, but they were amazing in their own way. Arriving in Oklahoma in November was a complete delightful surprise as some farmers were still harvesting and the landscape was beautiful with rolling hills and vegetation still full of color while our harvest time was over in early September, with snow on the ground and the trees having turned.

Then came Mr. Johnny Walton (John Boy) whom I had been dealing with at Great Plains Kubota since the start of this stray idea. Usually sales people are a pain in my butt, however this time it was a reversion (I was the pain in his butt), Johnny did a top notch job helping us carry out the task of purchase, pick up, and export. My hat is off to you Johnny. We had time limitations to get back for work so we had to leave as fast as we arrived with the tractor loaded up.

Unfortunately we missed a football game that Johnny had invited to watch with his wife. Also we missed the opportunity to try a "mud bug" that he was raving about. It’s on our list for the next time we are passing through! It is February and we are still pleased with the little tractor, having made a few repairs, one being the addition of a block heater!

Being prepared when mowing needs to take place is essential. The new range of Kubota mowers are designed to offer maximum productivity. Kubota’s DM series has five tough and reliable models to choose from. The DM1017, DM1022, DM1024, DM2028, and the DM2032 cutting widths range from 5’6” to 10’5”.

The new Kubota DM1000 series cutters feature a new heavy-duty Kubota cutterbar, which is designed for low maintenance and quiet operation. The fully welded cutter with overlapping C-channels has a rigid and sturdy construction, ensuring a very high level of durability.

The Kubota cutterbar has a high oil capacity which ensures a low working temperature. The long curved gear wheels run smoothly in oil and provide optimal power transmission with little slack. Kubota disc mowers also feature a spring loaded break away.

When an obstacle is encountered, the mower swings backwards to protect the cutterbar. By reversing, the mower is reset into working position.

Products Hay Equipment Cont.

The Kubota DM2000 models are lightweight, simple mowers with a compact, but durable design for maximum output at a competitive price. They are offered in working widths of 9’2” and 10’5”. Featuring the Kubota cutterbar with triangular discs, continuous and excellent cutting performance, especially in difficult crop conditions, is ensured.

The mowers are equipped with a powerful and flexible spring loaded V-Belt drive. As the belt loosens, the spring pushes the drive wheel outwards, automatically tensioning the belt. The DM2000 series is fitted with the Kubota Non-Stop BreakAway system to protect the cutterbar. The integrated BreakAway system is designed to protect the cutterbar from foreign obstacles.

Upon striking an obstacle in the field the mowing unit swings backwards and up. This provides maximum protection of the cutterbar. What this means to the operator is effortless continuous protection for efficient cutting.

The 2000 series is just as easy to operate as the small 1000 series disc mowers. Adjustable suspension springs are easily set, to provide the ground pressure required. Once the machines have been set correctly, all the operations can be done from inside the tractor.

No use of the three point hitch is needed when lifting on headlands or going into transport position.

Having added hay tools to the line up means that Kubota is expanding their footprint in the agricultural market. Great Plains salesman, Brent Elliott, commented on the new products.

“It is nice to see Kubota is making a quality effort in completing the line of farm and forage equipment.

The disc mowers especially will be a great added bonus for our Kubota customers. The name Kubota is synonymous with quality and I expect nothing less 12

with their hay tools, said Elliott.”

RAKES - Kubota is also offering it’s first pull-type rotary rake with a working width of 13’9” (4.2m).

The Kubota RA1042T is fitted with 11 tangential tine arms and 4 double tines per arm.

The high tine frequency ensures clean raking performance, even at reduced rpm and high travel speed.

Infinitely variable cam track adjustment allows fine tuning to obtain optimum raking and swath formation according to crop conditions.

The new Kubota RA1042T single rotary rake is designed for low power requirements, while still delivering considerable working width of 13’9”. Offering a pull-type design and linkage mounted drawbar, the Kubota RA1042T can be easily operated by low horsepower tractors.

Great Plains Edmond...A Whole New Kubota Experience

ubota is becoming a household name. Their equipment is recognized worldwide as a source of reliability and power. When Kubota approached Great Plains about expanding their name even further they welcomed the opportunity and excepted challenge.

Great Plains is scheduled to open their fourth Kubota dealership in Edmond this spring. The decision to do so was made in part by Kubota Tractor Corporation relying on Great Plains Kubota to represent their brand in an energetic and fresh light. The new dealership will consist of about ten well equipped employees. Being new to the area, the store is designed to serve small acreage homeowners, professional landscapers, and the construction equipment needs of central Okla. The fact that this will be a whole new shopping experience for construction equipment buyers excites Great Plains salesman, David Gregstin.

“I’m enthusiastic about relocating from the Duncan dealership, which is mostly agriculture equipment, to sell at the Edmond store which will tailor to construction equipment sales. I think we will make a big splash and customers will be surprised to see a totally new buying experience for the equipment they need.

Great Plains is going to offer a new Kubota experience to the Edmond and metro area. When people buy Kubota they deserve the full package, and that’s exactly what we are going to give, said Gregstin.

New opportunities and products are what keep businesses thriving. Over the last few years Great Plains has become a leader in Kubota dealerships.

Customer services is and will always be their number one priority. The new Edmond dealership will offer nothing less. Kubota has dominated the compact tractor market since it’s arrival to the US in the 70s. Great Plains Edmond will offer the tried and true compact tractors, but efforts to accommodate the professional landscaper and construction equipment market will be of the utmost priority for the new dealership. Scheduled to open April first the full line sales and service Kubota dealership will also offer such lines Exmark, Land Pride, Woods as well as a variety of construction and agricultural attachments. Kubota service and maintenance is also a primary goal Great Plains will meet for both new and existing Kubota customers of the area.

The service department will feature mobile technicians capable of doing on site repairs. This is a great feature for construction equipment owners because it will reduce down time for contractors and municipalities.

A Meal For the Grill

pringtime is right around the corner, and more and more people will be going outside to cook.

For me cooking with smoke or flame is a year round event. Here is an easy meal for the grill. The main course is one of my favorite cuts of meat that most people know little about, the tri tip steak. It has a distinct savory, beefy flavor that is ideal for grilling. You may have to look for trip tips or ask your butcher to cut some, but they are available. The rest of the meal consists of grilled potatoes and peaches for desert. Enjoy the meal and have fun making it!

You Will Need

Tri Tip Steak - Lawry’s Seasoning Salt, Black Pepper, Cain’s Fajita Seasoning

Potatoes - Olive Oil, Lowry’s Seasoning Salt, Cracked Pepper, Garlic Salt Peaches - Butter, Cinnamon, Cocoa, Vegetable Oil, Brown Sugar, Salt

Cooking 1. Before you cook your steaks and potatoes cut ripe peaches in half and remove the seed.

2. In a saucepan mix 2 Tbsp of melted better, 1 tsp of cinnamon, 1/2 tsp of cocoa, Tbsp of vegetable oil, Tbsp of brown sugar and a pinch of salt. Melt together and let it cool.

3. When cooled put 2/3 of your sauce in a zip lock bag with cut peaches and put in the refrigerator to marinate.

4. Cut potatoes length ways, and rub entirely with olive oil. Liberally cover both sides with the seasonings.

5. Liberally season all sides of the meat with seasonings.

6. After your coals are ready for grilling cook potatoes for about 30 min.

When potato starts to soften put a tsp of butter on top. Remove from direct heat to cool part of grill. Begin cooking your steaks over medium to high heat for about 4 min. on each side, or until done.

7. After you’ve eaten and the coals have cooled somewhat, rub the grate with a paper towel soaked with oil and place the peaches pit side down.

When grill marks are present turn them over and cook until they are warmed through. Before removing from grill take the left over sauce and drizzle it over the peaches.

TIP 1 - Before cooking steak bring them to room temp.

TIP 2 - Use wood chips soaked in water for extra flavor.

TIP 3 - Let steaks rest for at least 5 min. before serving TIP 4 - If potato skins start to burn set on foil finish cooking.

(Same goes for Peaches if they start to burn)

Buy a choice or better if you can find it. If Brisket For The Smoker brisket you can’t find either look for a brisket with plenty of marbling through it. The fat on the outside isn’t as important as the streaked marbled fat in the meat.

Cooking 1. Apply rub all over the brisket the night before.

2. Get your smoker going. You will smoke at 225-250 degrees which equates to about 45 min. to 60 per pound depending on the thickness. It will take 2-4 hrs to reach the internal temp of 160 degrees.

3. Remove and wrap in multiple layers of foil while pouring in about a cup of your favorite sauce. Continue cooking until the internal temp is 200 degrees. Remove 22

from smoker and let steam off. It will be ready to slice in about 30 min..

Rub 1 Cup Turbandado Sugar 1/2 Cup Smoked Paprika 1/3 Cup Chilli Powder 1/4 Cup Kosher Salt 2 Tbsp Garlic 1 tsp cayenne & black pepper TIP 1 - A small hot fire is better than a large fire.

TIP 2 - Thin blue smoke is better than thick white smoke.

TIP 3 -Always slice across the grain.

TIP 4 - Save the auju to pour over slices for moist meat.

Water’s Not Water When It’s Frozen

inter brings a whole new set of issues for livestock drinking water. Limited water intake depresses animal performance quicker and more drastically than any other nutrient. Frozen water sources and improperly functioning automatic waterers are major contributors to limiting water intake.

Here are a few considerations to keep in mind during colder weather.

Animals drink water most readily between 40 and 65 degrees. Heated waterers that overheat can be just as big a problem as frozen water.

Free choice salt or salt in the diet will serve to increase water consumption and insure adequate hydration. When water is suddenly limited by frozen water sources or improperly functioning waterers, salt toxicity can occur because there is not sufficient water to

Dairy cows given free access to water will produce more milk and more butterfat than cows allowed to drink twice per day. It is an assumption, but a logical one, that beef cows would respond the same way.

Limited water intake is an important factor in urinary calculi (water belly) in ruminants. Less water passing through the kidneys and bladder allows stones to precipitate. When the water thaws, or water intake increases, the increased urine flow flushes these stones out of the bladder and into the male’s urethra where they may be too large to pass. This condition may require surgical intervention. It is much easier to prevent by assuring adequate and continuous water intake than to treat it once the stones have formed.

Limited water intake is usually manifested in horses as digestive tract disturbances. The most com-

n the late 1960s a local company called Gregory Enterprises began working in the foundation repair industry. Ram Jack Production Coordinator, Austin Graham commented on their use of the mini excavator at their Florida location.

“We could operate without the Kubota mini excavators, but we wouldn’t be as profitable. When I first started working here we dug everything by hand as well as drove steel by hand. We would show up on a jobsite and dig all day long so, I got to thinking about getting an excavator to dig the holes for us. We bought the smallest excavator Kubota sold which was the K008 for the purpose of digging.

After using it to dig I realized that it had just enough reach to drive steel. So I made an adapter to fit on the excavator that we could hook our drive head up to.

Now our Kubota K008 does everything for us. It digs and drives the steel. This set up really works well for our residential applications because we can drive them through doors and they don’t tear anything up, Graham stated.”

He was told that he wouldn’t be able to do the tasks necessary to perform the foundation repair operations with the K008s, but it has been quite the opposite.

Not only do the excavators perform the tasks, but they shorten job time and drive the piles with more precision. Overall the jobs are more professional. Graham now strictly uses Kubota excavators on all his job sites. He mentioned the initial factor for choosing Kubota was because of their reliability. They’ve had a Kubota L48 with a backhoe attachment at their yard for a few years, and never had any of trouble with it. This paired with the fact that Kubota offers pretty much the smallest mini excavator available is why Graham uses Kubota. Their K008s are by far, a more versatile machine than people think. Graham noted their performance on site.

“People thought the weight of the machine would not be able to handle our applications, but I can say we’ve installed over three to four thousand piles with the drive head attached to the K008 and haven’t had a single problem, mentioned Graham.”

that Graham works for in Florida is an exception.

“I don’t know why other dealerships don’t utilize these machines? There are three reasons we use Kubota. One, we drastically increase production.

Two, they help minimize fatigue which keeps moral of a job positive. Third, our sites are more professional looking with the Kubotas. We don’t look like backwoods hillbillies showing up to dig a hole. Competitors have even noticed and commented on how impressed they were, said Graham.”

The Kubota K008 mini excavator has benefited overall customer satisfaction and employee performance on a local level. On a national level Ram Jack uses Ram Jack University or RJU to solidify practices and employees.

Ram Jack university like the Kubota mini excavator increases profit and production. It is an information base conference that betters individual franchises, and the company as a whole. Ram Jack university is going to be held the first week in March in Ada, Okla.

Two years ago Great Plains Kubota brought mini excavators for attendees to demo. RJU is held twice a year, and gives all Ram Jacks locations the opportunity to get together and receive training, exchange ideas, and preview the new products their company has to offer.

Compassion Without Judgement

I

t was a bitter cold winter day in 2002 when Father John Norvell of St. Lukes Episcopal church received a phone call from the Red Cross in Ada, Okla. The call was regarding a young mothers need for diapers. With no transportation or anyone to watch her infant the young mother had walked through the snow and ice to the Red Cross in hopes of receiving help.

After aiding this young woman several members of St. Lukes parish decided the church must do something to address poverty in Pontotoc Co., and so, the Matthew 25 Mission was created. Now, this outreach program provides food and other health care essentials on a monthly basis to families and individuals that live in Pontotoc county.

Food is an expense that continuously rises without regard to wages or income standards. Families and individuals that already suffer from lack of income are affected even more by the rising cost of food. By providing food the Matthew 25 mission hopes to give some relief for those who need it. Every third Thursday of the month, this mission provides food and other products to over 275 clients. The basics such as; fruit, vegetables, meat, peanut butter, pasta, beans, and cereal come from the Oklahoma Regional Food Bank in OKC, and arrive at St. Lukes the day before distribution. Matthew 25 focuses on food, but tries to provide health and beauty aids, diapers, and anything extra they can get for households. This mission started with the needs of an infant, and it continues to aid children and infant needs by always including them within the budget.

Over the years the collaborative efforts of those involved has made Matthew 25 a hub for those needing 30

food. The annual budget has grown significantly since its beginning thanks to a variety of contributions it receives. Resources from private individuals, local churches, and St. Lukes members fund this growing ministry of compassion and love. One such donation, mentioned Fr. John Norvell, came from a former client of Matthew 25. The client had used the services of the mission during a time of need and given back during a time of abundance. The former client humbly donated $500 to Matthew 25, and thanked the volunteers for making a difference. It is donations and volunteer work from former and current clients that bring Gods work to full circle.

Volunteers much like the funding come from a variety of sources.

With increasing numbers of clients served the First United Methodist Church and St. Joseph’s Catholic Church have joined the project.

The day before distribution St. Lukes is bustling with volunteers all taking part in a very streamlined process.

Volunteers include students from the Ada High School leadership classes, clients, various church members, and occasionally those seeking community service.

The initial step is to unload the food bank truck.

While food is being organized within the parish hall other volunteers are busy doubling plastic bags to load with goods. After the food has been categorized a line is formed and is equally bagged and readied for the GPL Winter 2014

One Sophomore commented on the classes involvement with Matthew 25.

“We really enjoy doing stuff like this. The class is all about helping people in need, and doing what we can for our community, the Sophomore said.”

The issues surrounding the causes of poverty are complex. St. Lukes is a small parish in Ada, Okla., and isn’t equipped to take on the structures that perpetuate the cycles of poverty or causes of unemployment. However, the parish can ease the tension in families that don’t have enough to eat. Matthew 25 is aware of the extreme sensitivity to personal dignity needed in such a ministry. Compassion without judgment is a key element to connecting with the different people who come seeking relief. One of the main goals of this ministry is to restore the loss of self esteem and to treat each person as if they were Christ himself. Many people have and can benefit from this free offer. The only requirement of a client is that they live in Pontotoc Co. Father John Norvell commented on the Matthew 25 Mission.

“It’s the most fun thing I have done in ministry, and it’s an aspect of ministry they don’t teach you in seminary. Seeing the Matthew 25 mission grow the way that it has, and working with other churches and groups has been rewarding. From a client standpoint, no one need ever be embarrassed to receive from our abundance. We offer it freely, and we hope that in doing so, others will be strengthened to act sacrificially for the good of all people. At the heart of every good work is the God who provides the grace to accomplish it. We need your prayers as we continue the ministry that God empowers us to do, Norvell stated.”

Over the years Matthew 25 has seen many changes. In the beginning clothing was provided as well as food. The mission has grown from feeding 75 families to about 300 in under twelve years, and is now distributed by appointment.

One thing that hasn’t changed though is St. Lukes dedication to their mission.
