Turning Over a New Leaf Every fall I help my grandfather “turn” his mulch pile. Honestly, I can’t remember an autumn I haven’t done this. You might be wondering why I’m writing about a fall activity in our summer issue? The fact is creating good compost starts in the warmer months when vegetable scraps are more abundant and weather conditions are more favorable. There are three elements we look for when creating rich mulch. Heat, Moisture, and air are all necessary to break down most compost materials. Heat comes with the summer months, but moisture varies so wetting a compost pile periodically helps weight the elements down when rainfall isn’t as prolific. The most important part of the compost process is turning it in the fall. After the leaves have fallen we simply rake the matter that hasn’t broke down off the top, and transfer the usable compost from the bottom to a pile located directly beside our working compost. It’s important to break up the dense soil and aerate the ground during this flipping process. As your usable mound begins to grow its helps to slightly bowl out the center to increase moisture collection.

After shoveling the good compost into your now usable compost pile return the elements that haven’t broken down back into your working pile. Compost piles are a lot of work but they’re a great way to reduce waste while generating great soil to integrate in your vegetable or flower gardens.

Much like turning a mulch pile, Great Plains living is turning over a new leaf by going strictly electronic, and I have to say the decision to do so was a difficult one. Great Plains living will continue to deliver a content rich publication, but instead of delivering our topics through the mail they will arrive through subscribers in boxes.

A lot of time and thought went into this decision and we believe an easily accessible magazine delivered electronically is more effective than through the mail. The down side is, without your email we can’t deliver our magazine to you. Like the elements needed to make good mulch there are elements needed to make a good E-Magazine, and it starts with your participation. As Donnie and Ronnie stepped to the helm of the company, they knew the Spiritual direction of the company was the most important thing to consider. With that in mind, Bob Sharp, a former minister and concrete contractor, joined the B&H Team as their Chaplain and Safety Director. Bob has been a critical part of B&H since 2012. You can find Bob, Ronnie, and Donnie most mornings at 6 am at the Bible study hosted at B&H Construction for their employees. At 6:30 am you can step into the mandatory safety meetings for all B&H employees, Bob often leads these meetings and if you listen closely you can hear Bible verses and Biblical principles being woven throughout all the work that B&H does.

The genesis of Grace in the Trenches finds itself on a gas line installation job site in Oklahoma. The story goes like this, while out on a job Ronnie and Donnie were ministering to a new employee. As they were sharing their testimony a few of their hands on the job and even an inspector from the company they were working for began to share their testimony with this new employee.

Pretty soon, this new employee had a testimony of his own to share and these men took their testimonies to local churches to share just what God can do with a couple of construction workers from Goldsby, OK. Now, when they can get it scheduled the boys will travel to Oklahoma churches sharing their testimonies like they did that day in the field.

Bale Grazing 101

W

hat in the world is this all about? Simply put, bale grazing means that you stack hay during summer in a position that allows you to feed cows a controlled amount of hay by simply moving a few feet of electric fence.

My family operates a small cow/calf operation near Roff, OK. My wife Betty, our son Garrett and I do most of the work on the ranch. We all have “town jobs” so most of our work is done in the evenings or on weekends. Consequently we are always looking for ways to cut down labor, especially time spent feeding. During the winter it’s usually dark by the time we get home or if we feed in the morning it seems there’s always something that makes us late for work.

While visiting with Hugh Aljoe, Consultation Program Manager for the Noble Foundation, about minimizing inputs on the ranch he suggested that bale grazing might work well for our operation, and introduced me to the concept. We’ve been bale grazing for the past five years (except for last year when we didn’t make any hay) and have learned a lot from our mistakes and successes. We prefer to leave grass standing and have the cows do the harvesting, but for those years that we have been fortunate enough to make some hay bale grazing has worked well.

I would like to share with you what our experience has been.

Benefits we have found: Labor is greatly reduced. We have to haul the hay out of the field anyway so positioning the bales to graze doesn’t take much longer than stacking them in a hay pen. The real labor savings comes during the winter. We can give our cows another row of hay in less than ten minutes.

Since we usually let them have three to four days supply we spend about 30 minutes a week haying our cows.

Tractor wear and tear is reduced. Probably one of the hardest jobs your tractor has is getting started on those cold days to only run for a few minutes. If we net wrap our bales, we will use a tractor to turn the bales on their end once a month. Turning the bales on end makes it easier to get the wrap off but we wait until we are ready to feed them since they shed water better on their side.

Land fertility is improved. I’ve always been told that baling your hay is mining your nutrients. Bale grazing is an inexpensive way to put those nutrients back to work in an area on your ranch that needs them the most. If done properly you will see vast improvements in fertility and production of the site where bales are fed. Research has shown that carbon can be increased three fold in the top one foot of soil in just a few years of bale grazing.

Sanitation is improved. Instead of feeding in the same muddy spot, cows are feeding on a clean area each time they are allowed to have another row of bales. The late Dr. G. T. Easley, who was the long time veterinarian on the famed Turner Ranch near Sulphur, OK once told me the vast majority of calf health problems are caused by poor sanitation. Calves that lay in mud and manure and nurse dirty udders are much more likely to get sick. Dr. Easley said calf scours were virtually nonexistent on the ranch he was raised in New Mexico because cows were widely dispersed with a stocking rate of a dozen cows to the section.

In addition, calves can walk under the single electric wire and lie in a clean area while using the bales as windbreaks on cold days.

So how do you get started? Site selection would be a 11

good place to begin. Concentrating cows means there will be a concentration of nutrients. Pick a well-drained site that is shallow, rocky or just is not producing much forage for lack of fertility or organic matter. We have fed on a really thin soiled rocky hill for two years in a row. It is now covered with Bermuda grass and produces several times more than it ever has, (when it rains that is).

We probably made our biggest mistakes while learning how to position the bales. Placing the bales too close together causes many problems. It gets muddier and the cows back into the fence on the next row while backing out of feeders. It seems they are more likely to break into the next row if bales are too close together. As long as you are improving your place you should spread them out as much as you practically can. Placing the bales about 25 to 30 feet apart and positioning rows every 35 to 40 feet seems to work for us. Our bale trailer hauls eight four foot bales so we put eight bales in each row and try to dump them as close as possible to where they will be placed. Getting the rows straight really helps with fencing so we usually take a little extra time placing the bales. The best trick for getting them straight is mowing the area you plan to feed on before you dump the bales.

You can use your mower to skip a place that shows where your bales should go. A 15 foot batwing works really well as you can mow two strips and then skip a foot as a marker.

Should you use string or net? We have done both.

The easiest feeding year we had was when we baled our hay with sisal twine. It doesn’t need to be removed as it seems to just disappear when the cows eat the bale but there is a drawback. If you set a sisal twine bale down for a month or two you are committed to leaving it there because the twine begins to rot quickly and the bale will fall apart if you try to move it. Net is a little more work because it needs to be removed. However it protects the hay better and you can come back and pick up the bales later if needed.

Learning how much hay to give the cows and when to open up a new row determines how much waste you will have. We try to not give the cows more than three to four days supply of which the last day they go a little hungry. This makes them clean up as much hay as possible. The longer it takes for them to clean up a bale, the more waste there will be. If you have time to move the wire every other day and your cow to bale ratio is right, you will have very little waste. Based upon our experience a four by five foot bale for every 20 cows seems to be about right. At that ratio, if she eats 30 pounds a day, 12

they will eat most of the bale the first day and clean up on the second. So if you have 40 cows, make your rows two bales wide. Of course, how much they consume has a lot to do with the quality of the hay and the weather. If possible, stack your hay to give your cows the least quality hay early in the feeding season and save the best for the worst part of winter.

Lastly, setting up your electric fence properly is the key to this methods success. The last thing you want to do is drive up to your bale grazing site and find your cows tearing up the whole hay stack. It’s important to have a quality charger and to take a little time to train your cows to electric fence. You don’t want to turn loose your entire hungry herd in a pasture with just a single strand of poly wire separating them from your year’s hay supply if they aren’t accustomed to electric fencing. Spend a little extra money and get a brand name low impedance solar charger. We usually start with an existing barbwire fence down one side and an electric fence down the other.

We drive t-posts down the long side in the middle of each row of bales about 20 feet away from the hay. Then we use an electric fence reel with poly wire to reel the fence up to the next t-post and another reel to block the end to keep the cows out of the next row. While giving the cows another row we usually feed them a little to bait them away from the hay. Unhook the charger and move it to the next t-post, reel up the fence on the long side to the next t-post and move the gate wire on the end to the next row. If you have trouble keeping the cows out of the stack while moving the gate wire use two gate reels and put up another gate wire on the next row. Do this before you take the gate wire down next to the last row. Finally, put step in posts on the gate wire every 20 to 25 feet as this is where the fence will get pressure. We have had good luck sticking the posts in the next row of bales where it is too rocky to get a post in the ground. Since we use bale feeders, the last step is to cut the net off and roll the feeders down the hill 30 to 40 feet to the next bale. It takes us less than 10 minutes to feed a row of hay and our tractor is still in the barn.

If your time is short in the winter or you are simply looking for a way to decrease costs in your operation, give bale grazing a try. I recommend that you start small the first year while perfecting your own methods that will work best on your ranch.

Helen Brooking

I

here as did my husband Melvin for a brief period. I sort of feel like I’ve helped raise the Clark boys, and that I’ve done a fair job at it. They’ve all grown up to fine men,” she said.

The “Clark boys” Helen is referring to is Bill, Todd, Will and Garrett. One has to remember that at the young age of 28 Helen was four years older than Bill, so to her they’ve always just been the Clark boys.

“Helen is the best and I consider her part of my family. She’s played a major role in any business success we’ve had. She has given me the freedom from worrying about the accounting and back office responsibilities which has allowed the opportunity for me to concentrate on building our business.

On the clock Helen is the go to person for just about anything. Off the clock she’s played baby sitter and chaperone for Will and Garrett during there younger years. She’s been a fill-in family member, and friend to the Clarks for more than half of her life. Will Clark commented on the meaning of their relationship.

“Helen is more than a GP employee, she is part of our family. She is like a second mother for me, always there, always willing to listen. Helen’s legacy with our company is irreplaceable,” said Will.

In her off time Miss Helen, as she’s called around the office, enjoys traveling, watching the OKC Thunder, attending Ada First Baptist Church and spending quality time with her granddaughter Cameron.

The time Helen has spent in the service of the Clark family is a testament to her love of the Clarks and devotion to her trade. To refer her 30 years with the company as “service” would truly be an injustice. Devotion, dedication, and love would better portray her work-load for the last 30 years.

t’s commonly said by employees and ownership alike that Helen Brooking is the real boss at Great Plains.

She’s also probably the most feared employee of the company, but for those that have the pleasure of truly getting to know her are blessed by her kind and loving nature.

The Clark family has grown a lot since Helen began working for the family over 30 years ago. Garrett Clark, Great Plains Kubota Sales Manager, now with three children of his own, wasn’t even born when she started working for the Clark Oil Company in 1984.

It’s not just the family that’s grown. As Accounting Director for the company Helen has seen the ebb and flow, and various transitions the company has gone through.

Helen Brooking grew up knowing she would be an accountant. She was the youngest and first of her 6 siblings to attend college. The bookkeeping courses and instructor at Stonewall Schools were her early career inspirations. After graduating with an accounting degree from East Central University Helen worked as a bookkeeper and accountant for several smaller companies before she landed a position with a local CPA firm. It was this agency and a young Bill Clark’s’ innovation to use cutting edge technology with business that eventually led her to the Clark family.

To say that her time with this company has positively impacted her personally would be an understatement. For over half her life Helen has been in the presence of the Clarks and their business. She truly feels and is part of their family.

Helen commented that, “It wasn’t just me that was part of their family. They treated my girls like family too. My daughters Meredith and Meagan both worked

Helping Hands

aking care of a family farm can be an overwhelming task.

Linda and Wesley Evans know this all too well. Linda recently inherited the family farm after the unexpected passing of her parents.

The decision to buy a new tractor was made so they started looking for an easy to use tractor that was reasonably priced.

“I knew if I was going to survive on the farm I would need to buy a tractor. I bought a 54 horse Kubota with a cab, front-end loader, and brushhog. I knew this was a lot more tractor than I was farm-girl,” Linda said.

Linda’s son and only child, Wesley Evans, knows a lot about running tractors. He grew up on 20

tractors and like most kids he rode on a tractor in his grandfather’s lap. In March of 2006 Wesley was in a car accident on I-35 between Davis and Ardmore which left him paralyzed. Through time and determination he is now classified as a high-functioning quadriplegic.

Wesley loves working the family farm and at first he watched helplessly as his mom struggled through the hard seasons.

The generosity of one man was about to change their situation. Jerry Garrett, a business acquaintance of Linda knew of their situation on the farm and had expressed that he wanted to help. When Garrett heard about Wesley’s enthusiasm in helping on the farm and that he was

doing what he could to drive the tractor, he saw an opportunity to lend a helping hand. Garret enjoys restoring old tractors and going to tractor shows and is always looking for a beneficial project.

One day at work Linda received a surprising phone call from Jerry asking if he could build a ramp for Wesley. He explained that he had been thinking about how to go about it ever since the two had discussed the Evans’s situation. He had already been brainstorming with a friend about different ideas on the construction of the ramp and was excited about the project!

Linda quickly agreed and offered to pay for the materials, but Jerry refused, saying it was just something

“Steakhouse” Method offers fool proof way to cook a good steak...rain or shine 1. Heat oven to 350°F. Meanwhile, heat 12-inch seasoned cast iron skillet over medium heat until hot. Season steaks with sea salt and freshly cracked pepper; place steaks in skillet.

2. Brown steaks 4 minutes, turning once. Basically 2 minutes per side. If steak tries to stick before turning it isn’t ready.

3. Put skillet into oven, and cook accordingly: 14 oz. Ribeye roughly one inch thick Medium Rare - 10 to 15 minutes Medium Well - 16 to 21 minutes **Allow steaks to rest for at least 5 minutes before eating.**

Roasted Red Potatoes 1. Quarter potatoes and toss with oil, salt and pepper.

2. Place cut side down, on baking sheet.

3. Roast until tender and golden brown, about 35 minutes at 425°F. Roasted Asparagus 1. Cut off dry ends.

2. Spread asparagus into single layer on a baking sheet and drizzle with olive oil.

3. Sprinkle with salt and pepper.

4. Roast for 15 to 20 minutes at 425°F.

ith summer months come damaging elements that can be hazards to your Kubota’s health. A few simple steps and a little extra time can go a long way when the life of your tractor or implement is on the line.

There are several important things you can do as a responsible Kubota tractor owner this hay season. Keeping your radiator fins clean as well as your radiator and hydraulic fluid levels properly filled are just the beginning. Summer brings the heat and the heat brings the dust so check these fluids often along with your fuel filter sediment bulb. This should be cleaned and checked for optimal operating performance.

A lot of people beat the heat with a nice air conditioned cab. Give your tractors cab more attention than you would your cars since tractors generally work harder in rougher elements than most vehicles. Check your cabs condenser fins and cabin filters to maintain the cooled air you worked so hard for. One of the biggest failures to air conditioners during the hay season is not checking your radiator.

Another good practice before baling hay or any tractor operation is

to do an overall inspection of your Kubota. Check for leaks around your tractor. Ask yourself what should the fluids look like and take into consideration what operations will take place during your tractors upcoming hours. One easy maintenance step that should always be done is properly greasing your grease fittings. Get to know where all your greasing locations are and use them.

In the field it is important to check and keep your radiator screens cleaned. You might think that you could never get anything done when you spend so much time monitoring and checking the tractor? Look for the signs. If the temperature range is above normal, stop and blow out the radiator screens and check the fluids.

Another in the field tip that will help prolong performance is simply knowing when to stop. If something breaks or your tractor shows symptoms

something isn’t right don’t push it.

Ignoring a small problem will create a big problem down the road.

In the field if we look at the big picture, we see time saved.

Jamie Anderson, Great Plains Kubota Technician stresses the importance of the owner’s manual.

He says, “First and foremost read your owner’s manual and keep it with you. I hear: I’ve been around tractors my whole life I don’t need to read those things. Well, tractors today aren’t what they where ten years ago. Technology and advancements keep changing, so it is very important you read and know your manual.” Some issues Anderson has run into with this were simple warning lights. On certain Kubota L-Series tractors a maintenance minder light comes on every 50 hours to remind owners of upcoming maintenance. People have brought their tractor in to diagnose this issue when time and money could have been saved by simply reading the owner’s manual.

Keeping a sharp eye on your tires is another small step you should take. Check the lug nuts often and always make sure they are tight and even.

Also, check tire pressure. Tire pressure can

Operator Maintenance & Observation are Key have a direct effect on implement performance.

On the topic of your implements it is important that you get to know them just as well. Keep belts tight, blades sharp, and grease fittings pumped up. One obvious thing never to do is to inspect your implement while your PTO is running. It’s hard to have another season without another hand. Again, read the owner’s manual and keep it with you.

Getting to know how your implement operates under normal conditions will give you a better idea of what to expect in harsher, more variable conditions.

Make sure all covers and shields are in place and unbroken. Rigging up your own guards is never a good idea. There are plenty of funny stories to accompany this issue but for most the outcome isn’t so funny.

Lastly, end you’re day with a good clean up. When you’re done blow out your screens and any debris on and in your tractor and implement.

When bailing hay it is really important not to let hay sit. Chaff gathers around in tight places and since hay is already dry a chance for fire can occur.

The key to a successful season is operator maintenance and observation. Give your tractor a little time and effort now so it can give you a lot of time and effort in the future. Most Kubota manuals have a checklist and hourly maintenance schedule. Use the checklist and adhere to the recommended maintenance scheduling. It doesn’t hurt to go over in hours but to wait several hundred hours later before servicing can have a negative affect especially when working your tractor hard.

Always Finish What You Start

I

grew up in Duncan near the Chisolm Trail, which ran very close to what is now Hwy. 81. In fact, the Chisolm Trail Heritage Museum is now located a few hundred feet from the home I lived in until the sixth grade. Museums have been built, movies have been made, and numerous books written to commemorate this important part of history. Even though I literally grew up next to the trail, I took for granted what it took to complete the task of driving cattle to market. To drive cattle up the Chisolm Trail was hard, dangerous, and dirty work that once started, couldn’t be stopped until the mostly wild longhorn cattle were delivered to their pens near Abilene, KS. It usually took over two months to complete the entire journey from south Texas to northern Kansas. These cowboys had no weekends, no time off for injuries, no comp time, no compressed work schedules, just a little sleep on the ground while working to keep the cattle together and headed up the trail. This determination is one of the characteristics that made the American Cowboy a hero in the minds of many, and has shaped what we know of today as a good work ethic.

I can imagine that many of the cowboys wanting to hire on for the ride were told by the cow boss that if they started, they had to finish. In fact, most of the cowboys got paid at the end of the trail when the cattle were sold, so if they quit along the way they didn’t get paid anything.

Even if there is not payday at the end, there’s still the satisfaction in completing what you start, especially when the job isn’t easy. I

vividly remember coming home from school one day wanting to try out for football, and my Dad warning me that it will be tough.

He said, “Billy, if you start, you can’t quit.”

On the hot two-a-day practices that I sure thought about quitting on, but I’d hear my Dad’s words ringing in my ears, and knew that I just had to tough it out.

We didn’t have a winning team, but I was really glad I finished when I got my new letter jacket.

Talk less, and say more.

Remember that some things aren't for sale.
